Pakistan digitises Hajj 2027, announces Rs1.2m cost

Pakistan has moved towards a completely digital Hajj management system, enabling intending pilgrims to complete registration and make pilgrimage-related payments through the official Pak Hajj mobile application, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousuf announced on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, the minister outlined the government’s preparations for Hajj 2027, including the estimated cost of pilgrimage packages, payment schedules, allocation of seats for short-duration Hajj and arrangements for collecting payments from pilgrims.

He said the government had taken steps to bring the entire Hajj process onto a digital platform in an effort to make registration, payments and other administrative procedures easier, more transparent and traceable.

According to the minister, approximately 400,000 people have already registered and are currently progressing through the application process for the government’s Hajj arrangements.

Hajj 2027 packages and costs

Sardar Yousuf announced that the estimated expenditure for the regular government Hajj package, which will cover a stay of around 40 to 42 days, has been set at approximately Rs1.2 million.

The cost of the shorter package, designed for pilgrims opting for a stay of approximately 20 to 22 days, will be around Rs1.3 million, he said.

The government has allocated 30,000 seats specifically for pilgrims opting for the short-duration Hajj package.

The minister said the government would begin collecting the first instalment of Hajj expenses from August 17, while the second instalment would be payable during the second week of October.

He added that applicants who are not selected to perform Hajj in 2027 would be placed on a waiting list for consideration in the subsequent year.

Payments to be processed digitally

The minister said the digitalisation programme would cover financial transactions as well as the registration process. Pilgrims would be required to use the Pak Hajj application for making payments instead of relying on other payment channels.

The same digital mechanism will also be available to pilgrims travelling under the private Hajj scheme, allowing them to make their payments through the application.

Sardar Yousuf emphasised that the government intends to keep Hajj-related financial transactions within the designated digital system to improve monitoring and ensure greater transparency.

Pilgrims opting for the private scheme, however, will retain the option of selecting an online Hajj service provider of their choice.

Habib Bank selected for Hajj payments

As part of the new financial arrangements, the Ministry of Religious Affairs has entered into an agreement with Habib Bank Islami to facilitate the collection of Hajj payments.

The minister said the bank would work with the ministry as its authorised banking partner for receiving pilgrimage-related funds under the arrangements being introduced for the upcoming Hajj season.

He expressed satisfaction over the partnership and said the agreement would formally be signed on Monday.

Minister responds to question over bank selection

During the press conference, a journalist questioned the ministry’s decision to authorise Habib Bank as the banking partner for collecting Hajj applications and payments, asking why other banks had not been selected.

Responding to the question, Sardar Yousuf said the ministry had opened the process to banks and invited them to participate.

He explained that the banks that submitted applications were evaluated against the ministry’s requirements. According to the minister, Habib Bank was the only institution that fulfilled the required criteria, particularly those related to digital payment facilities.

He said other participating banks were unable to meet the ministry’s stipulated requirements, which ultimately led to Habib Bank being selected as the authorised partner.

Government seeks greater transparency through digital system

The government believes the new digital framework will reduce paperwork and simplify several stages of the Hajj process for Pakistani pilgrims.

By shifting registration and payment procedures to a centralised digital platform, the Ministry of Religious Affairs aims to improve oversight of applications and financial transactions while reducing the scope for manual errors.

The integration of both government and private Hajj arrangements into the app-based system is also expected to provide pilgrims with easier access to information and payment services.

    Islamabad: A man accused of preparing fake National Assembly identity cards and a false appointment letter showing himself as an Assistant Director has been arrested. His mobile phone and laptop were seized for forensic examination, a parliamentary committee was informed. The fake appointment document, falsely carrying the name of the National Assembly Secretariat, had been circulated on social media. The Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges expressed serious concern over the case and directed the Federal Investigation Agency to continue its investigation and submit a detailed report at the committee’s next meeting. The committee was chaired by MNA Muhammad Afzal at Parliament House. According to the briefing by the Additional Director General of the FIA, the accused, Abdul Wajid, had been arrested and produced before a court. The FIA told the committee that investigators had obtained his physical remand to continue questioning him. According to the FIA briefing, Abdul Wajid admitted during interrogation that he had prepared fake National Assembly identity cards bearing his own name. The agency further informed the committee that he had also prepared a fake appointment letter showing himself as an Assistant Director of the National Assembly of Pakistan. The committee was told that the fake appointment or offer letter had also appeared on different social media platforms, falsely presented as a document issued by the National Assembly Secretariat. Investigators took the accused’s mobile phone and laptop into custody through a formal seizure process. Investigators seized the accused’s mobile phone and laptop through a formal process. The committee was informed that the former Director General had not obtained written permission from the committee for his absence. The committee therefore decided to summon him at its next meeting. Members also reviewed several proposed changes to the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly. Amendments proposed by MNA Dr Nafisa Shah to rules 295, 296, 30, 31 and 205 were examined after the committee received views from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Law and Justice. After discussion, the committee recommended that the proposed changes to rules 295, 296 and 205 should not be approved. However, the committee recommended approving the proposed amendments to rules 30 and 31. The committee also considered amendments proposed by MNA Aliya Kamran to rule 44. After receiving views from the concerned ministries and discussing the proposal, the committee recommended that the amendment to rule 44 should not be approved. Members separately reviewed amendments relating to rules 118 and 119 as well as a proposal to remove rule 234A. The committee recommended that the amendment to rule 118 should be approved with changes. It also recommended removing rule 234A as proposed. A final decision on the proposed amendment to rule 119 was delayed until the committee’s next meeting. Questions of privilege moved by MNA Makhdoom Syed Sami ul Hassan Gillani were also postponed because the mover was unavailable. The committee also adopted a report prepared by a sub committee led by MNA Azhar Qayyum Nahra. The fake appointment letter case remained one of the most serious matters before the committee. Lawmakers are now waiting for the FIA forensic examination and detailed investigation report to establish the full circumstances behind the preparation and circulation of the false National Assembly documents.

    Bangladesh seeks India’s clarification over Hasina speech

    DHAKA: Bangladesh has asked India to clarify its position over a planned virtual address by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, saying political activities by a fugitive could undermine efforts to improve relations between the two neighboring countries. The request comes ahead of an event scheduled for August 5 in New Delhi, where Hasina is expected to deliver a video address alongside her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, during a programme organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia. Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said Dhaka is committed to strengthening ties with India but believes New Delhi should clearly explain its stance regarding political activities by individuals wanted by Bangladeshi authorities. She said Bangladesh has repeatedly expressed concerns over Hasina and other leaders of the Awami League making political statements while residing in India. According to the minister, Dhaka does not want such activities to negatively affect the progress made in bilateral relations. The minister noted that the event is not being organized by the Indian government but added that Bangladesh is prepared to raise the matter through diplomatic channels if required. India’s Ministry of External Affairs had not issued an official response to the remarks at the time of reporting. Relations between Bangladesh and India have remained under strain since Hasina left Bangladesh in August 2024 following a student-led uprising that ended her tenure in office. Although both countries have recently indicated a willingness to rebuild diplomatic engagement, the issue of Hasina’s stay in India continues to be a sensitive matter. Bangladesh has formally requested Hasina’s extradition to face legal proceedings. In 2025, she was sentenced to death in absentia over crimes against humanity linked to the 2024 crackdown on anti-government protests. Hasina has rejected the verdict, describing it as politically motivated and without legal validity. Despite the legal cases against her, Hasina has said she intends to return to Bangladesh in the future, while her planned virtual appearance has once again brought the issue of her presence in India into the diplomatic spotlight.

None of the three blazes has been contained, presenting an ongoing challenge for emergency personnel navigating difficult weather conditions and dry vegetation. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson described the emergency in stark terms during a broadcast interview, characterising the destruction across urban and suburban zones as severe. He noted that entire residential neighbourhoods within the city of Spokane have been largely wiped out by the advancing flames. Local authorities estimate that more than 700 structures have been completely destroyed, with an additional 10,000 properties remaining under immediate threat. Roughly 65,000 residents across Spokane County have been ordered to evacuate as containment efforts proceed. Emergency services confirmed that no fatalities or injuries have been verified to date.

    The Peshawar High Court has rejected asylum petitions filed by two former Afghan military officers seeking temporary protection and permission to remain in Pakistan. The petitioners, Abdul Mujeeb Ghairat and Baryalai Sharifi, had approached the court after expressing fears for their safety if they were forced to return to Afghanistan. They requested permission to stay in Pakistan temporarily. They also sought extensions of their visas and protection from arrest, harassment and deportation. The former Afghan servicemen argued that returning to Afghanistan could expose them to serious threats to their lives because of their previous positions in the Afghan security establishment. According to court documents, Ghairat had worked as a special agent with the protective service of the former Afghan president. Sharifi had served as a general in the former Afghan National Army. The two petitioners submitted Afghan passports and other documents to support their requests. They also referred to their need for emergency medical treatment and temporary residence in Pakistan. Ghairat told the court that he had already submitted an online application seeking an extension of his Pakistani visa. After examining the petitions, the court ruled that the applicants had not established any violation of their fundamental constitutional rights. The court observed that fears about possible threats after returning to Afghanistan, without sufficient supporting evidence, could not by themselves justify intervention under Article 199 of the Constitution. The court also clarified that decisions concerning the stay of foreign nationals in Pakistan fall within the authority of the relevant government departments. It said matters involving the issuance, extension or cancellation of visas and immigration status are governed by applicable laws and are primarily handled by the executive authorities. The court therefore declined to grant the requested relief to the two former Afghan officers.

    MUZAFFARABAD: With the final phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) general elections just days away, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has stepped up its campaign in Rawalakot Division, expressing confidence that it can secure a two-thirds majority in the 45-member Legislative Assembly. The party held a major election rally in Haveli on Friday as campaigning intensified ahead of the August 10 polling in Bagh and Haveli. The final phase will conclude the three-stage electoral process and determine the composition of the next AJK government. Addressing supporters, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah claimed that the results of the first two phases reflected strong public support for the PML-N. He said the party expected voters in Haveli and the three constituencies of Bagh to further strengthen its position and help it achieve the numbers required for a two-thirds majority. Sanaullah pledged that a PML-N-led government would implement its election promises and accelerate development projects in collaboration with the federal government. Referring to commitments made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the campaign, he said development initiatives similar to those undertaken in Punjab would be introduced in AJK. He also said PML-N President Nawaz Sharif would personally monitor major development projects in the region. Rejecting opposition allegations of electoral manipulation, Sanaullah described the first two phases as peaceful and transparent, dismissing claims of rigging as unfounded. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam also addressed the rally, assuring voters that a future PML-N government would focus on public welfare, infrastructure and improved services. He said road connectivity and other development projects in areas close to the Line of Control would be given special priority, with the government seeking to improve infrastructure and public facilities across the region. The August 10 vote in Bagh and Haveli is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the PML-N can translate its campaign momentum into a two-thirds majority and take the lead in forming the next AJK government.
