Arson suspect charged as catastrophic wildfires devastate Spokane County

A 37-year-old man has been charged with first-degree arson in connection with one of three uncontained wildfires burning across Spokane County, Washington, as emergency crews continue to combat blazes that have destroyed hundreds of structures and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.

Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels confirmed that Aaron F. Farinacci was arrested on Monday in relation to the Old Trails Fire and is being held on a $1 million bond.

According to law enforcement officials, a witness reported seeing Farinacci kneeling near the location where the fire originated on Saturday, shortly before smoke was observed rising from the brush.

Responding officers subsequently located the suspect carrying waterproof matches and a butane lighter. Investigators utilised body-worn camera footage to obtain an official arrest warrant.

The Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview fires have collectively scorched more than 10,000 acres across the region. None of the three blazes has been contained, presenting an ongoing challenge for emergency personnel navigating difficult weather conditions and dry vegetation.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson described the emergency in stark terms during a broadcast interview, characterising the destruction across urban and suburban zones as severe.

He noted that entire residential neighbourhoods within the city of Spokane have been largely wiped out by the advancing flames.

Local authorities estimate that more than 700 structures have been completely destroyed, with an additional 10,000 properties remaining under immediate threat.

Roughly 65,000 residents across Spokane County have been ordered to evacuate as containment efforts proceed. Emergency services confirmed that no fatalities or injuries have been verified to date.

The impact became evident after two oil tankers carrying nearly 2.8 million barrels of Saudi crude reversed course in the Red Sea instead of continuing through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The vessels had departed from the Saudi port of Yanbu and were originally bound for Asian markets. The latest development has created concerns over the security of Saudi Arabia’s alternative export route. For months, the kingdom relied heavily on its Red Sea pipeline network and Yanbu terminal to bypass disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where regional tensions have significantly reduced shipping traffic. With Bab al-Mandeb now under threat, Saudi Arabia’s backup route is also facing serious challenges. Energy analysts warn that this could restrict oil exports, tighten global supplies and increase pressure on international crude prices. Asian countries are expected to suffer the greatest impact because they depend heavily on Middle Eastern oil. Around six million barrels of crude oil pass through Bab al-Mandeb every day on their way to Asian markets, with Saudi Arabia accounting for nearly two-thirds of that volume. India is considered the most vulnerable, as more than half of its crude oil imports travel through the Red Sea route. Pakistan is also among the affected countries, with around 36 percent of its crude imports passing through Bab al-Mandeb. Other major importers exposed to disruptions include the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. To avoid conflict zones, shipping companies are evaluating a much longer route through Egypt’s Suez Canal, the Mediterranean Sea and around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope before heading towards Asia. Although this route bypasses both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb, it comes with significant drawbacks. The journey could take more than twice as long, extending delivery times by several weeks. Longer voyages would also increase fuel consumption, insurance costs and freight charges, making crude oil more expensive for buyers. Logistical challenges further complicate the situation. Most Saudi crude from Yanbu is transported on Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), which are too large to pass through the Suez Canal when fully loaded. Operators would need to either transfer part of the cargo through Egypt’s SUMED pipeline or use smaller tankers, both of which would add time and operational costs. Energy experts believe these limitations could reduce Saudi Arabia’s export capacity even if alternative shipping routes remain available. Some refiners in Asia have already started preparing for longer supply routes, while shipping companies are adjusting vessel schedules in anticipation of prolonged disruptions. Analysts also warn that if instability continues in both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb, the consequences could extend beyond shipping. Higher transportation costs, tighter crude supplies and increased demand for oil tankers could push global oil prices above the $100-per-barrel mark. Alternative supplies from countries such as Russia, the United States and Venezuela may help ease shortages, but those options are limited by production constraints, longer shipping distances and higher transportation expenses.

    Actor Haider Sultan, the son of legendary Pakistani film icon Sultan Rahi, has strongly criticised veteran actor Firdous Jamal over his recent comments about his late father. The controversy began after Firdous Jamal appeared on Public Demand and questioned Sultan Rahi’s acting abilities, prompting Haider to respond through a video shared on his TikTok account. Sultan Rahi remains one of Pakistan’s most celebrated film stars, having appeared in more than 800 Punjabi films during his illustrious career. He dominated both Punjabi and Urdu cinema for decades before his tragic death in 1996, when he was killed by unidentified assailants. His son, Haider Sultan, later followed in his footsteps by pursuing a career in television and film. In his TikTok video, Haider expressed anger over Firdous Jamal’s remarks and questioned why the veteran actor had spoken about his father in such a manner. He said, “Unnecessary things were said about my father. Firdous Jamal, you are a senior, a so-called TV artist, but who are you to speak about my father?” Continuing his criticism, Haider alleged that Jamal’s personal habits had affected his judgement. He stated, “Pride has ruined your life and your Hereafter. Your brain cells are dead because of consuming alcohol all the time. Before speaking about legends, you should first look at yourself. You have lost your senses.” Defending his father’s legacy, Haider described Sultan Rahi as both an exceptional artist and a remarkable person. He said, “Sultan Rahi was a great actor and a wonderful human being. The whole world acknowledges his contributions. Your ranting will not make him any less of a legend or an artist.” Haider also credited his father with playing a major role in sustaining Pakistan’s film industry during its most successful years. He remarked, “He kept the film industry alive, worked hard on his own, and elevated Pakistani cinema. You should be ashamed of yourself.” He further added, “Even your family has disowned you.” The actor did not limit his criticism to Firdous Jamal alone. He also criticised Public Demand producer Tahir Sarwat Mir for allowing the comments to be broadcast. Haider said, “I also have complaints against the show’s producer, Tahir Sarwat Mir, for allowing such obnoxious remarks to be aired about the person who treated him as his son.” He concluded his response by saying, “People may laugh at these comments, but everyone is condemning you. Who are you? ARY or Geo News? No, you are just a cheap Media group.” The dispute began after Firdous Jamal stated on Public Demand that Sultan Rahi “didn’t have any craft” and described him as “just a loud actor with a lot of energy.” His remarks quickly sparked debate online, with many fans defending Sultan Rahi’s legacy and criticising the veteran actor’s assessment.     PSX sheds 280 points amid cautious trading

    The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained under pressure during Tuesday’s trading session as investors adopted a cautious approach. The benchmark KSE-100 Index opened on a weak note and stayed in negative territory during the first half of the session. By 1pm, the index had dropped 279.65 points, or 0.16%, to 177,982.68 points. It had closed at 178,262.33 points in the previous session. The market witnessed further pressure shortly after opening. At around 9:39am, the KSE-100 fell to 177,914.38 points, losing 347.95 points, or 0.20%. The index later recovered some of its early losses but remained below the previous close. Trading remained volatile during the session. The index reached an intraday high of 179,123 points and a low of 177,903.87 points. Despite the decline in the benchmark index, market activity remained relatively strong. Around 339.48 million shares were traded during the session. The total value of shares traded stood at approximately Rs19.71 billion. Investor sentiment remained subdued as market participants appeared cautious about taking fresh positions. Profit-taking also contributed to the pressure on the benchmark index. The partial recovery from the morning low indicated some buying interest at lower levels. However, it was not enough to push the index back into positive territory by midday. Investors continued to monitor market developments and broader economic indicators for direction. The afternoon session was expected to determine whether the index could recover its losses or close the day in negative territory.

    Former The Real Housewives of Orange County star Jeana Keough is facing another difficult setback in her battle with tongue cancer, with her family revealing that the 70-year-old is now unable to speak as treatment continues to take a severe physical toll. She added, “Poor mama has to spit into tissues all day.” According to Kara, Jeana has already undergone two surgeries after doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Alongside surgery, she has been receiving chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy in an effort to treat the disease. However, the aggressive treatment has left the former reality television personality physically exhausted and struggling with everyday activities. Kara revealed that her mother has become “exhausted, struggling to stay awake, and becoming malnourished because the pain in her tongue and throat makes swallowing even the smallest bites or sips incredibly difficult.” The family had hoped to improve Jeana’s nutrition by having a feeding tube (G-tube) inserted after she reportedly went two weeks without eating a proper meal. Those plans, however, have now been postponed after doctors identified additional health complications. According to Kara, physicians discovered both a deep vein thrombosis and an infection in her leg, forcing them to delay the procedure. Explaining the situation, Kara wrote, “The feeding tube can’t be put directly into her stomach until there’s clarity on the infection.” As a result, Jeana’s cancer treatment has temporarily been placed on hold while doctors focus on treating the infection before proceeding with further care. Despite the difficult circumstances, Kara remained hopeful and asked supporters to continue keeping her mother in their thoughts and prayers. She shared the family’s current prayer requests, writing, “Prayer needs: that this infection clears quickly, that she can get the G-tube surgery imminently so that hangry Jeana doesn’t murder someone, and that we can quickly resume treatment so that this torment can be put in the rear view mirror.” The message combined honesty with humour, reflecting the family’s determination to stay optimistic during an extremely challenging period. Jeana first rose to fame as one of the original cast members of The Real Housewives of Orange County, where viewers followed her personal and family life over several seasons. Since news of her diagnosis became public, fans and fellow reality television personalities have flooded social media with messages of encouragement and support.     Around 175 foreign nationals who traveled to Canada to attend FIFA World Cup matches have filed applications for political asylum, according to immigration authorities. Canada hosted several FIFA World Cup matches in the cities of Toronto and Vancouver, for which the country issued thousands of temporary visas to international visitors. Many fans from different countries applied for tourist visas to watch the tournament, although a significant number of applications were rejected. After arriving in Canada, 175 visitors submitted asylum claims that will now be reviewed under the country’s refugee protection laws. Immigration officials have not disclosed how many of those seeking asylum were athletes or members of sports delegations. According to available information, 25 individuals from Ghana have filed asylum applications, while 15 applicants each from Egypt and Colombia have also requested protection in Canada. Officials have indicated that the number of applications could increase further. Canadian authorities had previously warned foreign visitors that obtaining a visa for FIFA World Cup travel does not provide a pathway to remain in the country beyond the permitted period or automatically qualify them for asylum. The asylum claims will undergo a legal assessment, during which Canadian immigration authorities will determine whether applicants meet the requirements for refugee protection under the country’s immigration system. The development has drawn attention as Canada continues to manage increased international travel and immigration applications linked to major global events.

Those expectations, she said, intensified body image issues that had first developed during her high school years.  The Riverdale star recalled watching episodes of the show and becoming overly critical of her appearance. She said she would focus on perceived flaws instead of appreciating her work, which only worsened her unhealthy relationship with food and her body. Mendes described feeling “disgusting” on camera at times, admitting that the relentless self-criticism played a major role in triggering her eating disorder.  Alongside the eating disorder, Mendes revealed that she also experienced panic attacks while working on the hit CW series. She explained that the demanding filming schedule often left her with little time to process her emotions. Whenever she felt overwhelmed, she struggled to express what she was going through because she did not want to delay production or let the cast and crew down.  As the pressure mounted, Mendes was eventually prescribed anti-anxiety medication to help her cope. Looking back, she admitted that while the medication helped her continue working, it also left her feeling emotionally numb. She now believes it was a temporary solution rather than a long-term answer to what she was experiencing.  Despite the difficult memories, Mendes emphasized that she does not view her Riverdale journey negatively. She said she still treasures many experiences from the seven-season series and remains grateful for the opportunities it gave her. However, she acknowledged that being in her early 20s and having little control over her schedule made the experience far more challenging than it might have been later in life.  Today, Mendes says she has developed a healthier relationship with herself by prioritizing mental well-being over perfection. By sharing her story, she hopes others facing similar struggles understand they are not alone and that recovery is possible. Her candid reflections also highlight the hidden pressures that many young actors face behind the scenes, reminding fans that even successful stars can quietly battle anxiety, self-doubt and body image issues while pursuing their dreams.
