Syria sentences former President Bashar al-Assad to death

A Syrian court has sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad to death over allegations of premeditated and deliberate killings.

The sentence was issued in absentia. Assad was not present in court when the ruling was announced.

The court also sentenced Atef Najib, a former security official who served during Assad’s rule, to death.

According to the court, the charges against Assad relate to allegations of killings that were deliberately planned and carried out.

The ruling marks a major development in the legal proceedings against the former Syrian president. Assad was removed from power before the court issued the sentence.

The court proceeded with the case in his absence. It reached its decision based on the charges brought against him.

Atef Najib was also named in the proceedings. He served as a security official during the Assad era and was handed the same punishment.

The court described the alleged crimes as involving premeditation and deliberate killing. These allegations formed the basis of the death sentences.

The development comes amid continued legal and political efforts concerning officials associated with the former Syrian government.

The ruling against Assad could become an important part of the legal record surrounding his years in power.

The former president has faced allegations related to serious abuses during the conflict in Syria. The latest court decision focuses specifically on charges of premeditated and deliberate murder.

The sentence was announced without Assad appearing before the court.

The court also issued its decision against Najib in connection with the same proceedings.

Further legal developments could determine how the sentences are handled and whether additional proceedings follow.

According to the reported ruling, the former Syrian leader was convicted on charges described as war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The decision marks a significant development in legal proceedings against senior figures from Assad’s former government.

Assad ruled Syria for nearly 24 years after succeeding his father, Hafez al-Assad, in 2000. His government faced years of armed opposition after protests erupted across the country in 2011.

The conflict developed into a prolonged civil war involving Syrian government forces, opposition groups and several foreign powers.

The war caused widespread destruction and a major humanitarian crisis. Millions of Syrians were forced to leave their homes, while large numbers sought refuge in neighbouring countries and beyond.

Assad remained in power throughout most of the conflict. His government was accused by international organisations and rights groups of carrying out serious abuses against civilians. The former government repeatedly rejected many of the allegations.

Assad’s rule eventually came to an end in December 2024. Opposition-led forces advanced towards Damascus, forcing him to leave the country with members of his family.

He subsequently travelled to Moscow, where Russia provided him with protection.

The latest verdict is the first death sentence against Assad under Syria’s transitional authorities. The new authorities have begun legal proceedings against officials and figures associated with the former government.

Some defendants have appeared before the courts in person, while proceedings against others have been conducted in absentia.

The case against Assad is therefore being closely watched as part of broader efforts to address alleged crimes committed during the conflict.

The death sentence also represents a dramatic reversal for a leader who remained at the centre of Syrian politics for decades.

PPP leads in two AJK seats as PML-N wins one

MUZAFFARABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party is leading in two constituencies in the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is ahead in one seat. An independent candidate has also secured victory in another constituency, according to unofficial results. Polling was held in four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli districts in the Poonch division. However, voting could not take place at several polling stations because of unrest and security concerns. In LA-15 Bagh-2, PPP candidate Zia Qamar was leading after results from most polling stations were received. PML-N candidate Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas was in second place. PML-N candidate Sardar Mir Akbar Khan was leading in LA-16 Eastern Bagh. He was ahead of PPP candidate Sardar Qamar Zaman Khan, making the constituency the strongest prospect for the PML-N in the third phase. In LA-17 Haveli-Kahuta, PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was ahead of PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz in the closely contested race. An unexpected result emerged from LA-14 Western Bagh. Independent candidate Sardar Sajid Iqbal Abbasi defeated former AJK prime minister and Muslim Conference leader Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan in his home constituency. The AJK Election Commission has also announced re-polling at 23 polling stations. The exercise will take place on August 15. According to Election Commission officials, voting will be repeated at nine polling stations in LA-16 and 14 stations in LA-15. Polling at these locations could not be conducted during the earlier round because of unrest. Elections in five constituencies of Poonch and two constituencies of Sudhnoti have been postponed. The authorities are expected to announce new dates after reviewing the security situation. Meanwhile, PML-N candidate Mohsin Aziz has demanded a recount in LA-17 Bagh-4. His request was rejected by the Returning Officer, prompting PML-N workers to stage a sit-in outside the RO office. Aziz said the protest would continue until the votes were recounted. The demand has added another layer of uncertainty to the closely contested election process. The PPP has also raised allegations of electoral irregularities. Party leaders have accused authorities of disrupting polling and creating difficulties for voters and polling agents. PPP representatives have called for an impartial review of complaints. They said the Election Commission should examine allegations of irregularities to ensure that the voters’ mandate is protected. PPP Senator Sherry Rehman had earlier raised concerns over delays in polling. She also alleged that party polling agents were stopped from entering some polling stations. The PML-N has rejected the allegations of widespread rigging. Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said the PPP was using the rigging narrative to cover what he described as an electoral setback. He also called for an end to protests and sit-ins. Sanaullah said legitimate demands would be considered by the government, while warning that violence and armed activity would be dealt with according to law. The PML-N remains in a strong position overall after the first two phases of the AJK elections. It won nine of 13 seats in the Mirpur division during the first phase. In the second phase, the party secured 15 seats from the Muzaffarabad division and refugee seats. The PPP won four seats in the first phase and six in the second. The PML-N has so far secured 24 seats across the first two phases, while the PPP has won 10. The ruling party has said it needs only a few additional seats to reach a two-thirds majority in the AJK Assembly.

Baby Shark star Park Geon-roung takes K-pop leap with WAVE

The child performer who became globally recognised through the viral “Baby Shark” phenomenon is now preparing for a new chapter as a K-pop artist. Park Geon-roung, now 17, is set to enter the Korean music scene under the stage name Baby Shark Boy (BSB). His debut digital single album, WAVE, is scheduled for release on August 20, 2026. The upcoming track will feature Joohoney, a member of the popular K-pop group Monsta X. Park has also contributed to the song’s lyrics, giving him an opportunity to establish an identity beyond his childhood fame. Park first attracted international attention when he appeared in the “Baby Shark” video as a young child. The song went on to become one of the biggest digital entertainment phenomena in history, reaching audiences far beyond its original target of young children. The Pinkfong Company, the South Korean entertainment company behind the franchise, is supporting Park’s transition into music. According to the company, WAVE will include musical elements inspired by “Baby Shark” as a nostalgic connection to the performer’s early career. However, the new release is intended to present Park as a young musician in his own right rather than simply revive his childhood role. The original “Baby Shark Dance” became the most-viewed video on YouTube in November 2020 after overtaking Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito.” It later became the first video on the platform to cross the 10-billion-view mark. The video has since accumulated more than 16 billion views, demonstrating the extraordinary global reach of the children’s song. Its popularity was largely driven by repeated viewing among children, with young audiences often replaying the short video multiple times. That high level of repetition helped transform the song into a global digital phenomenon. The track also moved beyond children’s entertainment and became a major social media trend. The #BabySharkChallenge encouraged users around the world to recreate its distinctive choreography. International celebrities and major K-pop acts also participated in the trend, helping the song reach audiences that extended well beyond its original demographic. Now, nearly a decade after his appearance in the viral video, Park is attempting to build a career in a very different part of the entertainment industry.

Man arrested after alleged sexual assault of woman…

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman on Brighton Beach, as Sussex Police continue their investigation into the incident. According to police, the alleged assault took place overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday on Brighton seafront. Officers responded to reports of the incident and immediately secured the area near the Brighton i360 tower, where forensic specialists examined the scene and gathered evidence. A significant police presence remained at the location while investigations were carried out. Sussex Police confirmed that a 28-year-old suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of rape. Authorities said the man remains under investigation and has not yet been formally charged. Under UK legal procedures, suspects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in court. Police have not released the identity of either the suspect or the victim. Officials also declined to disclose the suspect’s nationality, explaining that such information is generally not made public before formal charges are filed. The force said the woman is receiving support from specially trained officers and victim support services as the investigation continues. Authorities emphasized that protecting the victim’s privacy remains a priority. Investigators have appealed to members of the public who were in the Brighton Beach or Brighton i360 area at the time of the alleged incident to come forward with any information. Police are particularly interested in mobile phone footage, photographs, CCTV recordings, or eyewitness accounts that could assist with the ongoing inquiry. Sussex Police stressed that the investigation is still in its early stages and that further updates will be released as more information becomes available. Officers urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries are ongoing. The latest investigation comes only weeks after another high-profile criminal case involving a sexual assault on Brighton Beach concluded in court. In that separate case, three men were convicted and sentenced to lengthy prison terms for the rape of an unconscious woman. That case is unrelated to the current investigation but has drawn renewed attention to public safety along the popular seaside destination. Police have reiterated their commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into the latest allegations and ensuring that anyone with relevant information contacts the authorities. The outcome of the case will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.

Riteish Deshmukh slams Yogesh Rawat, ends Lock Upp journey

A dramatic turn of events unfolded on Lock Upp after contestant Yogesh Rawat returned to the reality show by defeating Dheeraj Dhoopar in a challenge. However, his comeback was short-lived as co-host Riteish Deshmukh confronted him over remarks about the show’s popularity and ultimately asked him to leave the competition. After re-entering the jail, Yogesh was seen interacting with fellow contestants Akanksha Choudhary, Ram Kapoor, Akanksha Chamola, and Pamala. During the conversation, he claimed that the show’s TRP had dropped after his eviction and suggested that the makers had no choice but to bring him back because of his popularity. His comments did not go unnoticed. Riteish Deshmukh, who had been listening from outside, addressed the contestants and questioned Yogesh over his statements. The actor appeared visibly upset and challenged Yogesh’s claim that the show depended on his presence. Riteish reminded him of the exact remarks he had made, saying that Yogesh had implied the show suffered after his exit and that his fans had forced the makers to bring him back. He strongly objected to the attitude behind those comments and asked Yogesh whether he genuinely believed the show existed because of him. The host further clarified that Yogesh’s elimination had not been a personal decision. He pointed out that the contestant had lost a task and was evicted based on the format of the game, not because of any individual choice made by the hosts or the platform. When Yogesh tried to explain that he had merely expressed his personal feelings, Riteish interrupted and stressed that every statement made on the show reflected not only on the contestants but also on the hosts, the streaming platform, and the program itself. He said that claiming the show’s ratings had fallen and would rise again because of one contestant showed an inappropriate level of arrogance. Riteish then delivered a firm response, telling Yogesh that the show did not need him and announcing that he was being terminated from the house. He added that contestants must take responsibility for every word they speak and understand the impact of their public statements. The confrontation marked the climax of an already tense episode. Earlier, Yogesh had also clashed with Riteish during a separate exchange. As the contestant questioned the way events had unfolded, saying, “Sir, if this was what you wanted to do, then…,” Riteish immediately cut him off. The host firmly replied, “Don’t tell me. Don’t put this act with me,” making it clear that he was not willing to entertain further arguments. The heated exchange quickly became one of the episode’s biggest talking points among viewers, with fans reacting strongly to the unexpected termination. Yogesh’s dramatic return, bold claims about the show’s ratings, and his confrontation with Riteish Deshmukh ensured that the episode remained packed with controversy and intense emotions, making it one of the most talked-about moments of the current season of Lock Upp.

Trump could resume Iran strikes, US senator warns

US Republican Senator Jim Banks has warned that President Donald Trump could order fresh military strikes against Iran if Tehran does not quickly agree to end its nuclear programme and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to Fox News, Banks said the Trump administration still prefers a diplomatic solution but expects Iran to return to negotiations and reach an agreement soon. He warned that if Iranian leaders refuse to come back to the negotiating table, the United States could resume heavy military attacks. According to Banks, the decision to delay further strikes does not represent weakness or a retreat by Washington. Instead, he said, Trump has given Tehran another opportunity to pursue a peaceful settlement and avoid further escalation. The senator also claimed that divisions exist within Iran’s leadership over how to respond to US pressure. He described the situation as a struggle between hardline military figures and elements within the ruling establishment who may favour negotiations. Banks argued that some Iranian officials now recognise the scale of America’s military capabilities and the potential consequences of continued confrontation. He said the pressure from the United States has created a situation in which parts of Iran’s leadership may be more willing to reach an agreement. The Republican senator’s remarks come amid heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route. Any prolonged disruption in the waterway could have significant consequences for international oil supplies and global markets. Banks maintained that Washington’s objective remains to push Iran toward a deal while keeping military action as an option. His comments suggest that the Trump administration could increase military pressure if diplomatic efforts fail to produce progress in the near future.
