Shan Masood resumes batting ahead of England Tests

BECKENHAM: Pakistan batter Shan Masood has taken another important step towards returning to Test cricket, resuming batting practice with the national squad ahead of the three-match series against England.

Masood, 36, suffered a fractured index finger during the opening Test against the West Indies in Tarouba, despite scoring a century in the first innings.

The injury forced him to miss the second Test, but the former Pakistan captain remained with the squad to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of the team’s medical staff.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now confirmed that Masood participated in a training session at Kent County Cricket Club in Beckenham, where Pakistan players worked through batting and bowling drills.

“Under the supervision of the medical team, he carried out batting practice,” the PCB said in an update.

Masood’s progress will be closely monitored as Pakistan prepare for a demanding series against England. His availability for the first Test will depend on his recovery and clinical assessment.

The opening Test is scheduled to begin at Headingley on August 19, leaving Masood only a limited window to prove he is fit enough for the challenge.

Before the series begins, Pakistan will play a four-day warm-up match against PCC Select XI starting Wednesday. The fixture will provide the squad with valuable preparation in English conditions.

The second Test will be played at Lord’s from August 27, followed by the final match at Edgbaston from September 9.

For Pakistan, Masood’s return could provide a significant boost to the batting line-up. His century in the Caribbean showed his ability to make an impact, and his recovery now gives the team hope that the experienced left-hander could be back when the England challenge begins.

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities to intensify sanitation efforts across the province, ordering daily early-morning washing of major roads and improved cleanliness in housing societies, markets and residential areas. Chairing a review meeting on the Suthra Punjab programme, the chief minister instructed officials to ensure effective waste management in both cooperative and private housing societies. She also directed the introduction of uniform dustbins and garbage bags in commercial areas, along with fixed schedules for waste removal. Maryam ordered the daily washing and cleaning of main roads at 5am and stressed that sanitation efforts must extend beyond major thoroughfares to streets, neighbourhoods and vacant plots. Authorities were also told to ensure door-to-door garbage collection across Punjab. The chief minister directed that Suthra Punjab workers receive their salaries by the fifth of every month and called for monthly reports to verify timely payments. She also ordered the early clearance of contractors’ outstanding dues and warned of immediate action if delays in workers’ salaries occurred. Special attention was ordered for areas surrounding schools, colleges, universities and hospitals, as well as parks and green belts. Officials were directed to remove discarded bottles, juice boxes and other waste from these locations. Maryam further instructed authorities to improve sanitation around railway tracks in urban areas and ensure that the entry and exit points of cities are cleaned regularly. Deputy commissioners were asked to maintain close coordination with contractors and the managing directors of Water and Sanitation Authorities to monitor progress. The chief minister also called for uniform standards for field monitoring officers and directed that their motorcycles carry proper branding. Standard operating procedures are to be developed to evaluate sanitation performance at every level, from field workers to senior officers, with particular attention to cleanliness in fruit and vegetable markets. She directed that contractors violating sanitation standards should initially be given 24 hours to correct shortcomings before any financial penalty is imposed. “Imposing fines is not our objective; the focus should be on ensuring cleanliness,” she said, while calling for zero tolerance against persistent negligence. The chief minister also ordered regular cleaning of Suthra Punjab vehicles, waste containers and collection points. She praised sanitation efforts in Lahore, Khanewal, Okara, Attock, Kasur and Murree but directed teams in Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sheikhupura and other areas to improve their performance. KP chief minister Sohail Afridi vows to improve pr…

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has pledged to improve the province’s situation, stating that the current challenges are the result of “closed-door decisions.” Speaking during a visit to the venue of an upcoming political rally in Peshawar, the chief minister assured party workers that his government is committed to restoring stability and addressing the province’s pressing issues. During his address, Afridi said that August 5 marks an important date in the country’s political history, as it represents the third anniversary of the arrest of his party’s founding chairman. He described the upcoming gathering as a political rally where the party would outline its future strategy and communicate its plans to supporters. The chief minister also referred to the political developments of April 9, 2022, claiming that the removal of the elected government on that date led to worsening conditions across the country. He argued that subsequent political decisions had contributed to the challenges currently being faced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Highlighting his administration’s priorities, Afridi said that despite the difficult circumstances, his government is determined to improve governance, strengthen institutions, and address the issues affecting the province. He expressed confidence that his team would demonstrate tangible progress through practical measures rather than political rhetoric. According to the chief minister, the upcoming public gathering will not only commemorate the third anniversary of the party founder’s arrest but will also serve as a platform to announce the party’s next political course of action. Party workers have been actively preparing for the event, and leaders expect a large turnout of supporters. Afridi emphasized that his government remains focused on serving the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa despite ongoing political challenges. He reiterated that improving public services, maintaining stability, and addressing citizens’ concerns remain among the administration’s key objectives. The remarks come at a time when Pakistan continues to experience an active political environment, with major parties organizing rallies and public meetings to mobilize supporters and present their policy agendas. Political observers believe that such gatherings are likely to shape future political discourse and influence upcoming developments in the country’s political landscape. As preparations for the rally continue, attention remains focused on the announcements expected from the provincial leadership. Supporters anticipate that the event will outline the party’s future strategy, while political analysts will closely watch how the statements and proposed plans may affect the broader political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan.

Sohail Afridi warns rulers to ‘open their eyes?…

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has warned Pakistan’s rulers and decision-makers to “open their eyes” before September 27, saying the situation could become increasingly difficult to control if justice, constitutional supremacy and the rule of law are not restored. Speaking to reporters while attending a protest outside the Supreme Court, Afridi also expressed concern over reports about the health of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan. The chief minister said serious concerns were emerging about Khan’s health and called for the matter to be treated with urgency. He said neither he nor Khan had attempted to use the former prime minister’s health for political relief. Afridi demanded that Khan’s family be allowed to be present and that his treatment be conducted under the supervision of his personal doctors. The KP chief minister referred to the treatment of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during Imran Khan’s government. He said Khan had allowed Sharif to travel abroad for medical treatment on humanitarian grounds, despite questions that had been raised at the time regarding medical certificates. According to Afridi, Khan was now being deprived of basic human rights and justice, which he described as a matter of serious concern. Afridi also criticized what he described as politically motivated cases against Khan. He alleged that his political opponents had themselves faced corruption allegations and accused them of misusing national resources. These claims represent Afridi’s political position and were not independently established in his remarks. The KP chief minister also spoke about the judiciary, saying Pakistan’s justice system was facing a major test. He urged judges to stand up for justice and said that one judge taking a principled position could encourage others to do the same. Afridi argued that the public was looking toward the judiciary for relief and justice. He questioned where citizens would turn if judges failed to perform their constitutional responsibilities. The chief minister further warned about growing anger among young people, saying he could see what he described as a “revolution” in the eyes of the country’s youth. He cautioned that continued injustice and rising hatred could eventually create a situation in which even Imran Khan might struggle to persuade people to respond with affection or restraint. Afridi urged the rulers and decision-makers to understand the seriousness of the situation before September 27 and move the country toward justice, constitutional supremacy and the rule of law. He warned that failure to address these concerns could make the situation increasingly difficult to manage, adding another strong political message to the ongoing tensions surrounding Imran Khan and his supporters.

    # A$AP Rocky responds to Drake’s ‘Burning Brid…

A$AP Rocky has addressed the renewed tension surrounding Drake after the Canadian rapper appeared to reference Rocky and his partner, Rihanna, on his song “Burning Bridges.” The track, released as part of Drake’s 2026 album Iceman, quickly sparked discussion among hip-hop fans. Listeners interpreted several lines as possible references to Rocky, particularly a lyric questioning where a rapper’s “baby mama” was while discussing his music. Because Rihanna and Rocky are partners and share a family, fans quickly connected the lyrics to the Harlem rapper. However, neither Drake nor Rocky has explicitly confirmed every interpretation of the song. (Just Jared) Rocky and Drake’s complicated history The tension between the two rappers has been developing for years. Rocky previously addressed their relationship in an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, saying that he no longer had a good relationship with Drake. He also suggested that women and past relationships played a role in how their friendship deteriorated. (BET) The situation gained additional attention after Drake released Iceman, with fans examining its lyrics for references to Rocky, Rihanna and other celebrities. Rocky has not appeared interested in letting the online conversation dictate his response. Instead, his recent comments suggest that he is aware of the speculation but remains focused on his own career. Rihanna remains part of the conversation Drake’s apparent reference to Rihanna has attracted particular attention because of her history with both artists. Rihanna and Drake previously collaborated on several songs and had a widely discussed relationship, while she has been romantically involved with Rocky since 2020. Rihanna has also publicly supported Rocky’s career. After his album Don’t Be Dumb reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in January, she celebrated the achievement publicly, contradicting the idea that she had not supported his music. (Just Jared) The feud continues The latest exchange adds another chapter to one of hip-hop’s most closely followed rivalries. Rocky has previously responded to online speculation with humor and occasional jabs, including a July concert moment in which he held up a fan’s anti-Drake sign. (iHeart) For now, there is no indication that the situation has moved beyond music and public comments. Drake’s lyrics have fueled plenty of discussion, but interpretations remain largely driven by fans. Rocky appears to be moving forward with his own music and performances while maintaining his relationship with Rihanna and focusing on his growing family. Whether he chooses to answer Drake directly in a future song remains to be seen.
