India cricketer Abishek Porel arrested over rape allegations

KOLKATA: Indian wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested by Kolkata Police in connection with a case involving allegations of rape and other sexual offences, with a court remanding the 23-year-old cricketer to three days of police custody.

Porel was arrested on Monday night and produced before the High Court the following day. The development comes as police investigate allegations made against the emerging cricketer. The allegations have not been proven in court.

The case was filed on June 23. During an earlier hearing on July 14, the court was informed that police needed to take further steps to seize electronic devices allegedly linked to the accused.

According to court proceedings, investigators were seeking the devices because they allegedly contained obscene photographs of the complainant. The court directed police authorities to continue efforts to apprehend the individuals concerned and seize the devices to prevent the alleged material from being circulated.

During the August 11 hearing, the court was informed through a message from the officer in charge of Mogra Police Station that one of the respondents had been arrested on the night of August 11. Police subsequently sought additional time to complete the required legal and investigative procedures.

Porel, who bats left-handed and keeps wicket, has emerged as one of India’s promising young domestic cricketers. He has represented Bengal and has played 32 first-class matches, while also featuring in 35 Indian Premier League games.

His most recent competitive cricket came during the 2026 IPL season, when he appeared in four matches for Delhi Capitals before the tournament concluded.

The arrest is likely to draw significant attention because of Porel’s growing profile in Indian cricket. However, the allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings, and no conclusion about his guilt can be drawn from the arrest alone.

The police investigation is expected to focus on the allegations, the electronic evidence mentioned in court and statements from those involved in the case.

    Islamabad: A controversy has emerged over the recruitment process of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) after the Wafaqi Mohtasib declared that the selection process for senior academic positions lacked transparency and directed the university to cancel appointments and repeat the process. The decision came after a complaint filed by a female complainant, who challenged her exclusion from the shortlist for Professor and Associate Professor positions despite claiming she met the required eligibility criteria. The Wafaqi Mohtasib, after reviewing documents and hearing both sides, concluded that maladministration was established and stated that serious questions were raised about the transparency of the selection process. The Ombudsman referred the matter to the Vice Chancellor of AIOU with directions to cancel the appointments and conduct the recruitment process again according to proper procedures. The controversy relates to faculty recruitment advertisements issued by AIOU for Professor and Associate Professor positions. According to the findings, AIOU advertised several academic positions on 15 September 2024, and received a large number of applications. Officials informed that 388 applications were received for 25 advertised Professor and Associate Professor positions. The university introduced an Internal Assessment Framework to shortlist candidates before sending applications for further evaluation. According to AIOU, the decision was taken because evaluating hundreds of academic files through experts would create major financial and administrative difficulties. Officials estimated that external evaluation of dossiers could cost around Rs26 million. Under the new system, eligible candidates were assessed through multiple stages including vision statement, leadership assessment, psychological assessment, teaching demonstration and screening interview. The assessment was conducted out of 50 marks, and 24 candidates were recommended for further selection stages. However, the female complainant was not recommended for any position. The female complainant challenged the process, arguing that the university changed recruitment procedures after the hiring process had already started. She claimed that according to the original recruitment rules, eligible candidates were required to appear before the Selection Board and that the introduction of an Internal Assessment as an elimination stage had no legal basis. She also argued that she was not properly informed about all stages of the assessment process. The complainant stated that she was informed about teaching demonstration and leadership assessment but was not informed about psychological assessment and screening interview. The complaint also raised concerns over fair hearing rights, claiming that she was excluded from the final process without written reasons or an opportunity to explain her position. Another serious issue raised was the timing of the Selection Board meeting. The complainant claimed that the Selection Board meeting took place on 10 April 2026, a public holiday, and that the approval process and appointment letters were completed unusually quickly on the same day. She questioned whether the process was properly transparent. She argued that recruitment rules and selection criteria should not be changed after the recruitment process has started. The Ombudsman examined the matter and found that the selection process did not appear transparent. The findings stated that several questions raised by the complainant required attention and that the recruitment process showed signs of maladministration. AIOU officials had defended the process, saying the Internal Assessment Framework was approved by the university’s Executive Council and applied to the advertised positions. They said the system was designed to identify the most competitive candidates while reducing time and financial burden. The case now requires AIOU to report compliance with the Ombudsman’s decision within the given period. The controversy has raised broader questions about transparency, fairness and recruitment procedures in public sector universities, where senior academic appointments directly affect the quality of education.

The diplomatic dispute was triggered largely by Italy’s response, which included a temporary suspension of visa free travel with Spain under the Schengen arrangement, along with pointed criticism accusing Madrid of encouraging human trafficking by granting citizenship to more than 500,000 people who had entered the country irregularly. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote on social media that he supports closing the Schengen area to Spain and expressed confidence in the actions of Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi. He said uncontrolled and irregular immigration represents a threat to national security, and argued that the situation unfolding in Ceuta demonstrates how Spain’s decision to naturalize large numbers of irregular immigrants was fundamentally wrong and only encourages trafficking. Italy was not alone in calling for a tougher stance. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis went further, calling for Spain to be suspended immediately from the 29 member Schengen arrangement. Finland and Denmark also voiced support for stricter border controls in response to the crisis. Notably, Ceuta itself lies outside the Schengen zone, meaning the enclave is not directly governed by the same free movement rules at the center of the diplomatic dispute between Madrid and its European partners.     Karachi: CCTV footage of the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Asim Khan in Dalmia’s Mujahid Colony, Street No. 12, has surfaced, showing the moments leading up to the attack and the suspect’s escape. According to the footage, the victim and the suspect were seen talking to each other before the shooting. During the conversation, the suspect, who was sitting on a motorcycle, suddenly pulled out a firearm and opened fire on Asim Khan. The victim collapsed to the ground after being shot. The gunfire caused panic in the area, with bystanders seen running for safety. A minor boy can also be seen near the motorcycle during the incident. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the CCTV footage to identify and arrest the suspect and determine the motive behind the killing. Authorities have not yet disclosed what was taken from the victim during the search.
