A major initiative has been announced to establish an automotive zone on 150 acres of land at Port Qasim in Karachi, with the government expecting the project to create new opportunities for exports and generate significant foreign exchange for Pakistan.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the Port Qasim Authority Board, chaired by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. The meeting reviewed plans aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure and promoting industrial and export-related activities through the country’s major port facilities.

Speaking at the meeting, Federal Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the proposed auto zone would cover approximately 150 acres at Port Qasim. He said the project was expected to generate around $500 million in annual exports, while contributing approximately $200 million in foreign exchange earnings each year

According to the minister, the auto zone will provide a range of facilities linked to the automotive industry. These will include refurbishment facilities, display areas and spare-parts services. The development is expected to support businesses involved in the import, refurbishment and export of automotive products and components.

The minister said the project would create new export opportunities for Pakistan’s automotive sector and help the country strengthen its position in international markets. He described the proposed auto zone as an integrated framework that would bring together automobile imports, refurbishment and exports at a single location.

The initiative is also expected to encourage greater investment in the automotive sector by providing businesses with dedicated infrastructure and facilities. By bringing different stages of automotive-related activities together, the project could help improve efficiency and create opportunities for companies seeking to expand their operations in Pakistan.

Port Qasim’s strategic importance as one of Pakistan’s major ports could further support the project. The location provides access to maritime transportation and international trade routes, potentially making it easier for automotive businesses to handle imported vehicles, spare parts and other related products before exporting refurbished or finished products to overseas markets.

The government expects the auto zone to contribute to the country’s broader efforts to increase exports and generate foreign exchange. Pakistan has been seeking new avenues to expand its export base and reduce pressure on its foreign exchange reserves. In this context, the proposed automotive zone could provide a platform for developing value-added activities rather than relying solely on the import and sale of automotive products.

The inclusion of refurbishment facilities is particularly significant because it could allow imported vehicles and automotive components to be repaired, upgraded or prepared for resale and export. Similarly, dedicated spare-parts facilities could support both local businesses and export-oriented automotive operations.

The project is therefore being presented as more than a conventional industrial development. It is intended to establish an integrated automotive ecosystem connecting imports, refurbishment, display, spare parts and exports.

If implemented as planned, the Port Qasim auto zone could attract investment, support businesses associated with the automotive industry, create employment opportunities and increase Pakistan’s export earnings. The government believes that the project will open new avenues for growth in the automotive sector while contributing to the country’s overall foreign exchange generation and export expansion efforts.

Official documents show that the difference between the basic cost and retail price of petrol is Rs139.93 per litre. For high-speed diesel, the difference stands at Rs116.10 per litre. The documents show that the basic cost of one litre of petrol is Rs197.69. However, consumers are currently paying Rs327.62 per litre. Several taxes, levies and margins are included in the retail price. These charges significantly increase the amount paid by consumers at fuel stations. Petrol carries a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre. A climate support levy of Rs5 is also imposed. The price also includes Rs21.24 in customs duty. An Inland Freight Equalisation Margin of Rs7.48 is charged per litre. Oil marketing companies receive a margin of Rs7.87 per litre. Dealers are paid a margin of Rs8.64 per litre. As a result, consumers pay Rs130.23 per litre in combined levies, taxes and margins on petrol. The situation is similar for high-speed diesel. Its basic cost is Rs264.76 per litre. However, its retail price has been fixed at Rs380.86 per litre. According to the documents, consumers pay around Rs116 per litre in levies, taxes and different margins on high-speed diesel. The petroleum levy on high-speed diesel is Rs74.28 per litre. The fuel also carries a climate support levy of Rs5 per litre. Customs duty accounts for another Rs15.68 per litre. The Inland Freight Equalisation Margin stands at Rs4.63. Oil marketing companies receive a margin of Rs7.87 per litre. Dealers receive Rs8.64 per litre as their margin. The figures show that taxes, levies and various margins form a significant portion of the final prices of both fuels. The additional charges directly affect motorists and consumers. They also increase transportation and operating costs for businesses that depend heavily on fuel. The rising cost of petrol and diesel can also put pressure on the prices of goods and services. Transport operators, traders and other businesses often pass higher fuel costs on to consumers.

    Salman Raja demands Imran’s medical access

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Salman Akram Raja has called for meetings between the party’s founder, Imran Khan, and his sisters and medical team. Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Raja said PTI representatives had met the Registrar of the Supreme Court. During the meeting, they requested that the cases involving the party founder be taken up for hearing without further delay. The PTI leader also demanded that Imran Khan be allowed to meet his sisters. He said access to his doctors should also be restored so that his health can be properly monitored. Raja said the party had been assured that the pending cases would be scheduled for hearing next week. He added that the relevant cause list would also be issued. He expressed concern over the long gap between Imran Khan and his doctors. According to Raja, the PTI founder has not been able to meet his medical team for around one and a half years. Raja questioned the reason for preventing regular medical consultations. He said the issue was particularly important because of concerns about Imran Khan’s health. The PTI leader also discussed the former prime minister’s political activities. He said Imran Khan had the right to express his political views. However, Raja said the party was prepared to ensure that political discussions did not take place if they could affect Imran Khan’s health. He said the priority at present was his medical well-being and access to proper healthcare. Raja said the matter would be taken before the court next week. He indicated that the party would seek judicial intervention on meetings with family members and doctors. The PTI has repeatedly raised concerns over access to Imran Khan and his medical care.
