Fresh monsoon spell to lash Pakistan from August 1…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to receive another spell of monsoon rainfall from August 13 to 15, with the upper and central parts of the country expected to experience rain, thunderstorms and occasional heavy downpours.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that monsoon currents were entering the upper parts of the country while a westerly wave was also influencing the weather system.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected across parts of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Several districts, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Mirpur, Diamir, Astore, Skardu, Hunza and Gilgit, are likely to receive rainfall.

Several areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also expected to experience showers. The affected districts include Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Shangla, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Galiyat, Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi and Haripur.

In northeastern Punjab, rain is expected from the night of August 12 through August 15. Murree, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib are among the areas likely to receive showers.

The weather system is also expected to affect Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the Pothohar region from the night of August 13 to August 15. The Met Office has forecast rain, strong winds and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy falls.

Other parts of Punjab, including Sargodha, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, are also likely to receive rainfall between August 12 and 15. Parts of Balochistan, including Zhob, Barkhan and Musakhel, may also experience showers.

In Sindh, partly cloudy to cloudy conditions are expected in southeastern and coastal areas. Tharparkar, Umerkot and Sanghar may receive rain and thunderstorms on August 12 and 13, while hot and humid conditions are expected elsewhere in the province.

The Met Office has warned of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore.

There is also a risk of landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas of upper KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir. Authorities have urged residents and visitors in these areas to remain cautious.

Tourists have been advised to take extra care while travelling to mountainous regions during the wet spell. Farmers have also been asked to plan agricultural activities according to the changing weather conditions.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, 155 people have died and 460 have been injured in rain-related incidents during the ongoing monsoon season.

    The Supreme Court has scheduled five petitions concerning access to jailed former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan for hearing on August 18. A three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed will hear the petitions. Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim are also part of the bench. The cases were previously being heard by a bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar. The bench has now been reconstituted after Justice Mazhar became unavailable at the Supreme Court’s principal seat. The petitions seek permission for Imran Khan’s family members, personal doctors and legal team to meet him in prison. The applicants have also requested access to his medical records and proper arrangements for his medical treatment. The petitions gained renewed attention after PTI lawyers and lawmakers gathered outside the Supreme Court earlier this week, protesting over the continued delay in fixing the cases. A delegation led by PTI lawyer Salman Akram Raja subsequently met the apex court registrar. According to Insaf Lawyers Forum chief organiser Intezar Panjutha, the registrar assured the delegation that five petitions relating to restrictions on meetings with Imran would be listed for hearing. The cause list was expected to be issued ahead of the proceedings. One of the petitions was filed by Imran’s sister, Uzma Khan. She has sought his transfer to Shifa International Hospital, arguing that he requires proper treatment and continuous medical monitoring for an eye-related condition and other health complications. The Supreme Court had earlier directed that details of meetings held by Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi, with family members, lawyers and party leaders in prison be submitted. The newly constituted bench has attracted attention because of the legal positions previously taken by its members in politically sensitive matters. Justice Afghan has been associated with dissenting opinions on several major constitutional and legal issues. He had opposed the constitutionality of trying civilians in military courts and had also dissented in a case involving the transfer of judges between high courts. He has previously granted post-arrest bail to PTI leaders facing cases related to the May 9 violence. Justice Ibrahim was part of a Supreme Court judgment that overturned an earlier order concerning Imran’s right to defend himself in a defamation case filed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court is separately hearing petitions concerning the alleged solitary confinement of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The dispute over access to Imran has remained a major issue for the PTI, which maintains that his family, lawyers and doctors should be allowed regular meetings. The government has continued to face pressure over the prison arrangements surrounding the former prime minister.

    The United States has revoked more than 600 visas from foreign nationals over the past month as part of a sweeping campaign against birth tourism operations, the State Department announced Wednesday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on social media that American citizenship is not for sale, accusing criminal organizations of profiting by coaching foreign nationals to defraud the visa system and forge documents in order to secure citizenship for their children. He said these networks have systematically exploited weaknesses in US immigration law for financial gain. The State Department recently launched a dedicated Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force tasked with identifying and dismantling these networks. Rubio said the unit will continue reviewing the activities of visa holders to put an end to what he called a heinous abuse of national law, and said the department intends to use every tool available to dismantle birth tourism networks and protect the integrity of American citizenship. The crackdown follows an executive order President Donald Trump signed on August 6 that describes birth tourism as a calculated exploitation of immigration policy and casts it as a threat to national security. The order gives the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security authority to permanently bar entry and revoke documentation for individuals found to be facilitating these schemes. Trump signed two executive orders on August 6 in a narrower attempt to limit birthright citizenship, again testing a constitutional provision even after the Supreme Court rejected an earlier version of his effort. Curbing birthright citizenship has remained one of the central goals of Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, with the White House specifically targeting birth tourism, in which pregnant foreign nationals travel to the United States specifically to give birth on American soil. Following the Supreme Court setback on June 30, Trump initially urged Congress to pass legislation addressing the issue before ultimately turning to executive orders instead, a route that allows the administration to set policy directly but carries less legal weight than legislation passed by Congress.

    PESHAWAR: The Directorate of Youth Affairs, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has launched the “Ikhtiyar Awam Ka” Complaint Cell across all districts of the province, providing citizens with a dedicated platform to register complaints, submit suggestions and seek information regarding youth-related services through their respective District Youth Offices. The initiative has been introduced to promote transparency, accountability and effective public engagement while ensuring timely redressal of complaints related to youth affairs and government services. Director Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Abbas Khan Afridi said the establishment of the complaint cell reflects the government’s commitment to responsive governance and citizen-centric service delivery. “The Directorate of Youth Affairs is committed to ensuring that every citizen has direct access to our services. The ‘Ikhtiyar Awam Ka’ Complaint Cell will strengthen communication between the public and the Directorate, enabling us to address complaints promptly and improve the quality of services through public feedback,” Mr Afridi said. He said citizens from every district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could contact their respective District Youth Offices through the designated helpline numbers to register complaints, report issues, share recommendations and obtain information about youth development programmes. Mr Afridi added that every complaint received through the complaint cell would be handled with transparency, responsibility and within a defined timeframe to ensure accountability and public confidence. The complaint cell has been established in all district youth offices across Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Buner, Shangla, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Malakand, Chitral Upper, Chitral Lower, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, North Waziristan, South Waziristan Upper, South Waziristan Lower, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Karak, Kohat, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Haripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Kolai-Palas Kohistan, where citizens can connect through the officially designated helplines. Officials said the initiative would strengthen public trust, improve institutional accountability and ensure efficient delivery of youth-related services across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

    South Korea backs Trump’s push to revive North Korea talks

    SEOUL: South Korea has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s efforts to restart dialogue with North Korea but wants any renewed negotiations to produce meaningful progress on Pyongyang’s nuclear programme. South Korean National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said on Friday that Seoul supports Washington’s diplomatic outreach to North Korea, provided that it does not weaken the country’s security preparedness or leave South Korea out of the process. Wi said any renewed US-North Korea dialogue should focus on achieving tangible progress towards addressing North Korea’s nuclear weapons capabilities while also supporting efforts to establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. He stressed that close coordination between Seoul and Washington would be essential if negotiations with Pyongyang resume. “We need to coordinate with the United States to ensure that any resumption of US-North Korea dialogue leads to substantive progress on the North Korean nuclear issue,” Wi said. The national security adviser also referred to Trump’s recent decision to significantly reduce major joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. He said the move appeared to indicate Washington’s willingness to create conditions for renewed engagement with North Korea. However, Seoul remains concerned about maintaining a credible defence posture. Wi said South Korea must ensure that diplomatic efforts do not undermine military readiness. He also warned that Seoul should not be sidelined if Washington succeeds in reopening talks with Pyongyang. Trump has been seeking another meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The two leaders held three summits during 2018 and 2019, but their negotiations failed to produce a lasting agreement on denuclearisation. Trump has previously criticised the scale of joint US-South Korean military exercises, arguing that some drills could send the wrong message to North Korea. His administration has continued to explore ways to bring Pyongyang back to negotiations. Meanwhile, South Korea, the United States and Japan are scheduled to hold joint military exercises from September 9 to 11. The drills are intended to test the three countries’ readiness to respond to potential missile and nuclear threats from North Korea. Wi also said Seoul was seeking closer cooperation with Washington on several issues that have occasionally created friction between the two allies. These areas include South Korean investment in the United States under a bilateral trade agreement, security cooperation, intelligence sharing and the planned transfer of wartime operational control. The treatment of US-listed South Korean e-commerce company Coupang was also mentioned among the issues requiring greater coordination.

The families of the Little Scholars School victims expressed deep sorrow over the Kahna tragedy and prayed for the departed souls, strength for the bereaved families and a speedy recovery for those injured. According to reports cited in the appeal, the Punjab government announced Rs2 million for each family that lost a loved one in the Kahna incident and Rs500,000 for each injured person. The appeal welcomed the decision but questioned why the Dera Ghazi Khan victims had not received similar financial support. It highlighted that both incidents involved the collapse of educational building roofs and caused the deaths and injuries of schoolchildren. The appeal stressed that negligence and carelessness require serious attention in both cases and that families in Dera Ghazi Khan deserve the same compassion and assistance. The statement also noted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced relief for the Kahna victims but has yet to announce compensation for the Dera Ghazi Khan families or visit the city to offer condolences. This, it said, has disappointed the victims’ families and local residents. The appeal urged the chief minister to treat all affected families equally and announce financial assistance for the deceased and injured children of the Little Scholars School tragedy. It also called on elected representatives from Dera Ghazi Khan and the district administration to formally approach the Punjab government for a relief package. The appeal concluded that no financial assistance can replace a child’s life, but government support can provide some relief and show solidarity with grieving families.
