PML-N challenges Rathore’s victory in AJK consti…

MUZAFFARABAD: PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz has challenged the election result of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s LA-17 Haveli-Kahuta constituency, alleging irregularities in the compilation of results and seeking a recount of votes.

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has accepted the petition for hearing and summoned the relevant parties in Muzaffarabad.

Mohsin has alleged that the official result was changed through manipulation of election documents. He claimed that results received from polling stations showed him winning the constituency by a significant margin.

According to his claim, the results compiled by presiding officers showed him leading by around 8,600 votes. He alleged that there was a substantial discrepancy between those results and the figures later submitted to the returning officer.

The PML-N candidate said he had approached the returning officer and requested a recount but his request was rejected.

He has also called on PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to support a recount. Mohsin said he would leave politics if a transparent recount showed that he had not won the constituency by a substantial margin.

The disputed constituency was won by PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, according to the officially issued result.

Form-27 showed Rathore securing 33,872 votes, while Mohsin Aziz received 32,354 votes. Independent candidate Tariq Saeed stood third with 12,538 votes.

Mohsin has disputed these figures and alleged that the result was altered after the polling process.

He also alleged that armed individuals intimidated voters at some polling stations during election day. He claimed tensions increased after the rival camp realised that it could face defeat.

The PML-N candidate has vowed to pursue the matter through the electoral process and said he would not accept what he described as an attempt to deprive him of his mandate.

The election commission’s decision to hear the petition has formally brought the disputed result before the relevant electoral forum. The proceedings will determine whether a recount or any further action is warranted.

Political tensions in the constituency have also continued following the election.

Several vehicles parked along a roadside in Hoter village were reportedly vandalised. Local residents said the windows of the vehicles were smashed during an alleged attack.

The vehicles were reportedly parked outside the residence of senior PPP leader Zahid Hashmi, who is also president of the International Kashmir Peace Forum Europe.

According to local sources, individuals associated with the PML-N and an independent candidate were allegedly involved in the incident. The allegations have not been independently verified.

Some of the affected vehicles reportedly belonged to people who had travelled from Saudi Arabia to participate in the election.

The affected individuals alleged that, besides damaging their vehicles, the attackers took passports and cash from some of them.

Hayden Panettiere’s Nashville costar feels shatt…

Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death at just 36 has left her former Nashville castmates and fans struggling to process the heartbreaking loss. Among those mourning is Sylvia Jefferies, who played Panettiere’s on-screen mother, Jolene Barnes, on the popular country music drama. Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina. Her representative confirmed the actress’s death, while authorities said she was found in cardiac arrest. An investigation into the exact cause of death remains ongoing.  For Jefferies, the loss has been particularly painful because her connection with Panettiere extended beyond their scenes together. The actress recently shared an emotional tribute, remembering her former co-star as someone she cared deeply about. Jefferies described Panettiere’s passing as devastating and reflected on the struggles the actress had faced throughout her life. She also remembered the special bond they developed while working together on Nashville, where their characters shared a complicated mother-and-daughter relationship. The tribute came as the Nashville family gathered online and in public statements to remember Panettiere. Her former co-stars have described her as talented, energetic, kind and unforgettable. Connie Britton, who played Rayna Jaymes, also expressed her heartbreak following the news, while other cast members shared their own memories of the actress.  Panettiere became a major part of Nashville through her role as Juliette Barnes, a gifted country singer whose personal struggles often mirrored some of the challenges Panettiere experienced away from the screen. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations and made her one of the show’s most recognizable stars.  Beyond Nashville, Panettiere was widely known for playing Claire Bennet on Heroes and Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise. She began acting as a child and built a career that included television, film and music. Her final years were marked by difficult personal struggles, which she discussed openly in her memoir. Those who knew her have emphasized that her difficulties were only one part of her story and that she was also a loving, talented and determined person. Jefferies’ emotional tribute is a reminder of the impact Panettiere had on people around her. While audiences will remember Juliette Barnes, Claire Bennet and the many other characters she brought to life, her former colleagues remember the woman behind those roles. At only 36, Panettiere’s death has brought renewed attention to a career that began in childhood and ended far too soon. Her Nashville family is now left with memories of the actress who brought passion, vulnerability and unforgettable energy to the series.

Karachi: Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that the Sindh government’s Rs18.2 billion Solar Home System Project will provide clean and affordable energy to 275,000 deserving families across the province. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Memon said the initiative, launched under the guidance of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is a major step toward expanding access to renewable energy, particularly for low-income households and remote communities. According to the minister, the project will benefit 132,000 off-grid families living in areas without access to the national electricity network, while 143,000 on-grid families facing electricity-related challenges will also receive solar home systems. Each beneficiary family will be provided with a 180-watt solar panel, batteries, a central control unit, a charge controller, mobile charging facility, electric fans, and LED lights. The comprehensive package is designed to meet basic household energy needs while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources. Sharjeel Memon said the project is progressing rapidly, with more than 15,000 solar home system kits already distributed across various districts of Sindh. He added that the government aims to complete the distribution to all 275,000 eligible families by June 2027. The senior minister described the initiative as more than just an electricity project, saying it represents a significant welfare program aimed at improving the quality of life for economically disadvantaged families. He noted that access to reliable and clean energy would help reduce household expenses, improve living standards, and support sustainable development across the province. Coalitional fallout as violence and electoral fraud claims mar Azad Kashmir elections

A bitter clash between federal coalition partners has erupted over the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, following the death of a political worker and mutual allegations of voter fraud. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) condemned the killing of 35-year-old party worker Mukhtar Younus during polling in Nikyal, Kotli. Addressing a joint press conference, Sindh Local Governments Minister Saeed Ghani directly blamed the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate and supporters for the shooting, stating, “The way this election campaign was conducted, the result is that bullets are being fired today… Our workers are dying.” Ghani heavily criticised the Election Commission for failing to enforce code of conduct rules and accused the Punjab government of attempting to influence voters by promising public buses during the campaign. He also took aim at PML-N President Nawaz Sharif’s comparative statements regarding Sindh and Kashmir, asserting: “When you say ‘this is Kashmir, not Kashmore’ or ‘this is Mirpur, not Mirpur Khas’, you hurt the people of Sindh… Perhaps that is why people say the PML-N is not a national party but a Punjabi party.” Rejecting the accusations, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari presented video footage alleging that a PML-N candidate discovered bags of pre-stamped ballot papers at the home of a PPP candidate in Kotli. Pointing out the contradiction, Bokhari remarked, “Yesterday they said they would not let rigging happen. Today they are rigging.” Defending her party’s track record, Bokhari argued that public transit is a basic necessity and noted that the promised buses for AJK had not yet begun operating. She maintained that voters in the Mirpur division were turning out despite boycott calls, seeking Punjab-style developmental projects such as electric buses, housing, and youth scholarships. Addressing queries regarding Nawaz Sharif’s interest in the region, Bokhari clarified that the former prime minister does not seek an official title, but simply wishes to offer development guidance to AJK due to his Kashmiri heritage.

Dera Ghazi Khan: PMD, World Bank and Ghazi University Join Hands to Strengthen Hill Torrent Monitoring and Disaster Preparedness in Dera Ghazi Khan by establishment of State-of-the-Art Automatic Weather Station. A Major Milestone Towards Strengthening Weather Forecasting, Hill Torrent Monitoring and Community Resilience in Dera Ghazi Khan Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan, has taken a significant step towards strengthening weather monitoring, disaster preparedness and climate resilience in the region through the establishment of a state-of-the-art Automatic Weather Station (AWS) under the World Bank-supported Modernization of Hydromet Services of PMD in Pakistan Project (MHSP). The initiative, being implemented by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) with support from the World Bank, aims to modernize Pakistan’s hydrometeorological observation network, enhance forecasting capabilities and improve climate service delivery. The project is expected to play a vital role in strengthening early warning systems and disaster preparedness, particularly in areas vulnerable to extreme weather events and climate-related hazards. The proposed Automatic Weather Station at Ghazi University will provide real-time, high-resolution meteorological data, significantly contributing to weather forecasting and the monitoring of weather conditions associated with hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan. Given the region’s vulnerability to flash floods and hill torrents, the installation represents an important step towards improving early warning capabilities and protecting communities, livelihoods and infrastructure. Under Phase-I of the MHSP, a total of 110 Automatic Weather Stations are being installed across Pakistan, including 25 stations in Punjab. These stations will expand the country’s real-time weather observation network and provide reliable meteorological data to support forecasting, research, disaster risk reduction and climate-resilience planning. A project team recently visited Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan, where it held a meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad.
