Maryam announces Basant 2027 dates

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced that Basant will be celebrated in Lahore from March 12 to 14, 2027.

In a statement, Maryam said the announcement followed the successful celebration of Basant in 2026. She expressed hope that the festival would once again bring Lahore to life with colours, culture, music and celebrations.

The chief minister described Basant as a festival for the people. She encouraged citizens to participate in the celebrations and create lasting memories.

Maryam also invited overseas Pakistanis and international visitors to attend the event. She asked them to mark March 12 to 14 on their calendars and plan their visits to Lahore.

She said Lahore would once again be illuminated by the enthusiasm of the people during the festival.

The announcement comes as preparations for the 2027 celebrations are expected to build on the experience of the previous year. The provincial government is expected to focus on organising the festivities while ensuring that the celebrations are conducted in an orderly manner.

Maryam said she looked forward to welcoming visitors from Pakistan and abroad. She also expressed confidence that Basant 2027 would be organised successfully.

The festival is traditionally associated with colourful kites, cultural activities and public celebrations. Lahore has historically been at the centre of Basant festivities in Punjab.

Maryam concluded her announcement with a pledge to make Basant 2027 another successful and memorable celebration for the people.

    GUJRAT: The bodies of three females, including a two-year-old girl, who had gone missing from the Dinga area a day earlier, were recovered from a pond in Mohallah Chaar Gah , police said. The deceased were identified as Arooj Fatima, Haleema Sadia and two-year-old Ruku Fatima. According to police, all three had gone missing from the jurisdiction of Dinga police station on August 25. Following their disappearance, a kidnapping case had been registered at Dinga police station on the complaint of the family. A search operation was underway when their bodies were found in a pond in Mohallah Chaar Gah. Police said a heavy contingent was deployed at the scene after the recovery of the bodies. Crime Scene Unit personnel and teams of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) also reached the site and collected evidence for further investigation. The bodies were later shifted to a hospital for post-mortem examinations. According to preliminary police findings, the three victims appeared to have died due to drowning. However, police said the matter was still being investigated from different angles and the final cause and circumstances of their deaths would be determined after the completion of medico-legal and forensic procedures. The recovery of the bodies sent shockwaves through the locality, particularly because a kidnapping case had been registered only a day earlier after the three females went missing. District Police Officer Gujrat Faisal Shehzad visited the scene following the recovery of the bodies. He was briefed by police officers and also gathered information from residents of the area about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The DPO directed the officers concerned to conduct a complete and transparent investigation and examine all possible aspects of the case. He said the legal and investigative process should be completed strictly on merit and no aspect of the incident should be overlooked. Faisal Shehzad also met the bereaved family members and expressed his condolences over the deaths. He assured them that police would complete all legal and investigative formalities in accordance with the law. Police officials said the post-mortem reports and forensic examination of evidence collected from the scene would play an important role in determining whether the deaths resulted solely from drowning or whether any other factor was involved. Investigators are also examining the timeline of the disappearance and other circumstances leading up to the recovery of the bodies from the pond. The Dinga police said further proceedings would be carried out in light of the post-mortem findings, forensic evidence and the results of the ongoing investigation.     ECC approves Rs4.188bn PASSCO compensation package

    The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved a Rs4.188 billion compensation package for employees of the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO). The decision is part of the government’s plan to wind up PASSCO. The process is also linked to the disposal of the corporation’s wheat stocks. The government has set December 2026 as the deadline for completing the process. The ECC directed that the winding-up process must be independently reviewed. A third party will validate the process to ensure transparency and compliance with the approved plan. The committee also stressed the need to dispose of PASSCO’s wheat stocks as soon as possible. Officials said the early disposal of the stocks would help implement the employee compensation package on time. The Ministry of National Food Security and Research assured the ECC that the process would be completed by December. The government began work on the closure of PASSCO in 2025. The Prime Minister’s Office had directed the finance minister to oversee the process in consultation with the relevant ministry. A meeting chaired by the finance minister later decided that a severance package should be prepared for PASSCO employees. The package was designed along the lines of the voluntary separation scheme approved for employees of the Utility Stores Corporation. PASSCO’s Board of Directors subsequently approved the revised compensation package. The scheme covers regular employees as well as contractual and daily-wage workers. It includes severance compensation and several terminal benefits. These include leave encashment and a farewell grant. The package also provides maintenance support for widows and retired employees through PASSCO’s Benevolent Fund. The ECC had previously approved the winding up of PASSCO. It also approved the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle called the Wheat Stock Management Company (WSMC) Public Limited. The federal cabinet later ratified the decision. The total cost of the employee package is estimated at Rs4.188 billion. Around Rs3.967 billion has been allocated for severance compensation and terminal benefits for PASSCO employees. Another Rs221 million has been set aside for maintenance grants. The amount will benefit 38 widows and 236 retired employees.
