Petrol Price hits Rs320.73 after fresh hike

The federal government on Tuesday announced a fresh increase in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), continuing its new policy of daily fuel price adjustments.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs4.93 per litre. The new price has been fixed at Rs320.73 per litre.

The price of high-speed diesel has also been raised by Rs7.15 per litre. Consumers will now pay Rs367.21 per litre for HSD. The revised prices will come into effect from July 22.

The increase follows the government’s recent decision to introduce a daily petroleum pricing mechanism. Previously, fuel prices were reviewed every two weeks. Under the new system, prices are revised every day based on changes in the international oil market.

Officials said the daily pricing formula uses the average international oil prices recorded over the previous seven days. The policy is intended to ensure that fluctuations in global crude oil prices are reflected more quickly in domestic fuel rates.

The government had also revised fuel prices a day earlier. At that time, the price of high-speed diesel was increased, while petrol received a slight reduction for only one day.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will continue updating petroleum prices on a daily basis. The authority says the new system will improve transparency and allow consumers to see immediate changes linked to global oil prices.

Officials said international crude oil prices have become highly volatile due to renewed tensions in the Middle East. Fresh conflict in the region has increased fears of disruptions to global energy supplies and pushed oil prices higher.

Concerns over possible supply disruptions through key international shipping routes have also added pressure on global oil markets. Pakistan, which imports a large portion of its petroleum requirements, remains vulnerable to these fluctuations.

Earlier, international oil prices had declined after hopes of easing regional tensions. However, the latest developments reversed that trend, forcing another increase in domestic fuel prices.

High-speed diesel is mainly used by heavy transport vehicles, agricultural machinery and industries. Any increase in its price usually raises transportation costs and farming expenses, which can contribute to higher prices of essential goods.

Petrol is the primary fuel for motorcycles, cars and other private vehicles. Officials said petrol consumption has also increased after restrictions were imposed on the use of indigenous gas in Punjab, leading more consumers to rely on petrol-powered transport.

Xabi Alonso backs Morgan Rogers to boost Chelsea attack

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso believes new signing Morgan Rogers has the quality to make the team more competitive and expects the England international to build a strong partnership with Cole Palmer. Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, Alonso praised the club’s latest acquisition, describing Rogers as an important addition who strengthens the squad ahead of the new campaign. The 23-year-old midfielder completed a blockbuster move from Aston Villa last week in a deal worth £117 million, making him the most expensive British player in football history. Chelsea secured his signature after a long pursuit, with the club reportedly tracking the talented playmaker for the past two years. Alonso expressed his delight over the transfer, saying Rogers was exactly the type of player Chelsea needed. “It’s a great signing. We needed an important player in that position, and there were very few better options than Morgan. We are delighted to have him with us,” Alonso said. Chelsea are looking to bounce back after a disappointing Premier League season in which they finished 10th and failed to qualify for European competition. The arrival of Alonso as manager signals the start of a new era at Stamford Bridge, with the former midfielder aiming to rebuild the club into title contenders. Rogers joins an attacking group that already includes Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao, Willian and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda. Despite having several creative players available, Alonso is confident he has a clear tactical plan to get the best out of his squad. The Spanish coach believes Rogers and Palmer can form a highly effective partnership because of their technical ability and understanding of the game. “I have an idea of how they can play together. They can link really well. It’s about creating the right balance between players who provide stability and those who have the freedom to express themselves,” Alonso explained. He added that if Chelsea manage to position their attacking players effectively, the team will become stronger both in possession and when defending. Alonso also highlighted Rogers’ versatility as one of his greatest strengths. Throughout his career, the England international has demonstrated the ability to operate in several attacking roles, giving Chelsea greater flexibility in different tactical setups. According to Alonso, Rogers is capable of playing behind the striker, on either wing, or in advanced midfield positions. However, he believes the player is most effective when attacking from the left side while drifting into central areas. “We want him to play where he enjoys his football the most and where he feels comfortable. If we build good relationships between our attacking players and they understand each other’s movements, it will improve the overall quality of our game,” Alonso said. Rogers is not part of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Australia after representing England at the FIFA Club World Cup, where the national side finished third. The coaching staff are expected to integrate him into the squad once he returns from international duty. Chelsea begin their pre-season preparations with matches against Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur before travelling to Hong Kong, where they will face Juventus as they continue building fitness and tactical cohesion ahead of the new season.

Gold prices hold steady at Rs461,936 per Tola

KARACHI: Gold prices in Pakistan remained unchanged on Tuesday, with the price of one tola of 24-karat gold holding at Rs461,936, according to the latest rates released by the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA). The local bullion market remained relatively calm after gold recorded a notable increase in the previous trading session. On Monday, the price of gold had risen by Rs2,000 per tola, bringing it to Rs461,936. The price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold also remained unchanged at Rs396,035 on Tuesday. In the international market, gold prices showed little movement, with the benchmark rate standing at $4,395 per ounce, including a $20 premium. The stability in global bullion prices contributed to the lack of significant movement in domestic gold rates. Market participants continue to closely monitor international developments, particularly movements in the US dollar, expectations surrounding global interest rates and geopolitical developments, all of which can influence demand for the precious metal. Meanwhile, silver prices moved in the opposite direction in the domestic market. The price of silver declined by Rs43 per tola, settling at Rs6,986 per tola.

AJK polling enters third phase amid tight security

MUZAFFARABAD: Voting in the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir general elections began on Monday in four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli districts. Polling started at 8am and will continue until 5pm. Security has been tightened across the constituencies due to concerns over possible clashes and disturbances. Authorities have declared most of the 803 polling stations sensitive or highly sensitive. A large security contingent has been deployed to maintain law and order. Around 10,300 additional security personnel have been sent to Bagh and Haveli. Officials said the deployment was aimed at providing a safe environment for voters and election staff. The third phase was originally planned for all 11 constituencies of Poonch Division. However, voting was restricted to Bagh and Haveli after authorities reviewed the security situation. The remaining seven constituencies are expected to be polled later this month. Election officials have indicated that voting could take place on August 20 or 21, depending on the security situation. The current phase has attracted considerable political attention. Several prominent leaders are contesting the four seats. AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore is seeking to retain his constituency. Two former prime ministers, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas and Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan, are also in the electoral race. A total of 460,371 voters are eligible to cast their ballots. They include 238,664 men and 221,707 women. The election is being held at 803 polling stations. These stations have 1,254 polling booths. As many as 82 candidates are competing in the four constituencies. LA-14 Dhirkot has the highest number of candidates. Thirty candidates are contesting the seat. LA-17 Haveli has nine candidates, the lowest number among the four constituencies. In LA-17 Haveli, Prime Minister Rathore is facing PML-N candidate Engineer Mohsin Aziz and independent contender Khawaja Tariq Saeed. Rathore and Saeed were previously political allies. They had reportedly agreed to contest the seat alternately. Their political relationship changed after Rathore became prime minister. Rathore sought Saeed’s withdrawal from the contest. Saeed refused to step aside. The two former allies are now competing against each other. Mohsin Aziz is also running an active campaign. His father, Chaudhry Mohammad Aziz, had won the constituency several times in the past. The PML-N candidate is expected to receive support from sections of the Gujjar community. Saeed is believed to have support among parts of the Kashmiri community and several smaller clans. Rathore has expressed confidence about retaining the seat. He has highlighted the performance of his government during his tenure. The constituency has also witnessed allegations of electoral irregularities. Claims circulated on social media about alleged manipulation by two presiding officers. Election officials rejected the allegations as presented on social media. However, they confirmed receiving complaints against the two officials. Both were subsequently removed from election duties. In LA-15 Wasti Bagh, former prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas is facing several strong contenders. The candidates include PML-N nominee and former minister Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas. PPP candidate and sitting minister Sardar Ziaul Qamar is also contesting. Jamaat-i-Islami candidate retired Brigadier Dr Mohammad Khan is another key contender. Ilyas had initially announced a boycott of the third phase. He later reversed the decision and returned to the election campaign. He has described the contest as important for his political future. He has also linked his campaign to the possibility of securing a senior constitutional position after the election. Ilyas and Ziaul Qamar belong to the same Madiyal tribe. Brigadier Khan belongs to the Narma clan. He is backed by several influential Jamaat-i-Islami figures and local supporters. Mushtaq Minhas is benefiting from the PML-N’s position as the leading party in the elections held so far. The party has secured the largest number of seats in the previous phases and is expected to play a major role in forming the next government. In LA-16 Sharqi Bagh, former ministers Sardar Mir Akbar and Sardar Qamar Zaman are among the main contenders. Mir Akbar is contesting on the PML-N ticket. Qamar is representing the PPP. The LA-14 Dhirkot contest has also emerged as one of the closely watched races. Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan, head of the Muslim Conference, is seeking another victory from the constituency. He has represented the seat for several years and previously served as AJK prime minister. He is facing a strong challenge from Sajid Iqbal Abbasi of the Awam Dast-o-Bazu Party. Abbasi is a contractor and philanthropist. He has reportedly spent substantial personal resources on welfare and development projects in the constituency. His supporters believe his community work has helped him build a strong voter base. The contest has become more interesting because Attique and Abbasi belong to the same tribe. PML-N candidate Raja Faisal Azad and PPP nominee Raja Mubashar Ejaz are also contesting Dhirkot. However, the main competition is expected to remain between Attique and Abbasi. The results of the third phase could influence the political balance in AJK. The PML-N has already emerged as the strongest party in the earlier phases. The PPP and other political groups will now seek to strengthen their position in the remaining contests.

Infantino’s future in doubt after FIFA rights controversy

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing growing criticism after abandoning a controversial proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup, a move that has raised questions about his leadership and decision-making within world football’s governing body. The proposal sparked strong opposition from several football organizations, particularly regional confederations and professional leagues, who argued that such a major commercial decision should not have been pursued without broader consultation. Critics believe the plan exposed concerns over transparency and governance at FIFA. Claudius Schaefer, the chairman of the organization representing 53 professional men’s and women’s football leagues across Europe and the chief executive of the Swiss Football League, said the handling of the proposal had seriously damaged confidence in FIFA’s leadership. According to Schaefer, the situation would have significant consequences in most organizations, especially when a senior executive advances a major business initiative without informing or involving key governing bodies. He suggested that the controversy has left Infantino’s position under increased scrutiny. The proposal was officially withdrawn after widespread resistance from football stakeholders. The decision came following criticism from various regional football confederations, with UEFA and CONCACAF publicly expressing that they had lost confidence in Infantino’s leadership after the episode. Schaefer argued that the failed proposal reflected a broader concern about FIFA’s priorities. He said the organization appeared increasingly focused on generating greater commercial revenue rather than protecting the long-term interests of football competitions, players, clubs, and domestic leagues. He also warned that expanding commercial opportunities could encourage FIFA to create even larger tournaments and increase the number of international matches. Such developments, he said, would place additional pressure on an already crowded football calendar. Professional leagues have repeatedly voiced concerns over fixture congestion, arguing that players are being asked to participate in too many matches throughout the season. Domestic competitions, they say, often bear the consequences when international tournaments continue to expand. Schaefer emphasized that national leagues remain the foundation of professional football and should not be weakened by decisions aimed primarily at increasing commercial returns. He argued that any future reforms to international competitions must balance financial objectives with the welfare of players and the health of domestic football. Another major point of criticism centered on FIFA’s decision-making process. Schaefer claimed that even members of the FIFA Council—the organization’s highest decision-making body—were reportedly unaware of the proposal before it became public. He described this lack of consultation as surprising and said it raised serious concerns about governance within FIFA. The controversy has intensified calls for greater transparency and accountability in football administration. Many stakeholders believe decisions involving the commercial future of the World Cup should involve extensive discussion with FIFA’s governing bodies, member associations, leagues, and other key partners before being considered. Although FIFA has now withdrawn the proposal, the fallout continues to fuel debate over leadership, governance, and the future direction of world football. With criticism coming from influential football organizations across different regions, pressure remains on Infantino to rebuild trust and demonstrate a more inclusive approach to decision-making on matters affecting the global game.
