New provinces needed to improve governance: speake…

Speakers at a seminar on the creation of new provinces in Pakistan have said that establishing new administrative units could directly benefit the public.

The seminar was organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in Islamabad. MQM leader Mustafa Kamal, PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira and PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja addressed the gathering.

The speakers described the creation of new provinces as necessary to address public problems. They also stressed the need for a strong and empowered local government system.

The participants said Pakistan needs new administrative units to improve governance and ensure that resources are distributed at the grassroots level.

Mustafa Kamal said the existing system had failed to ensure effective accountability of governments. He added that even if new provinces were created, a strong local government system would remain necessary.

PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira suggested that the debate over creating new provinces should take place within the constitutional framework. He also called for strengthening the local government system.

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said that even after the creation of new provinces, some provinces would still have populations running into millions.

The speakers agreed that administrative reforms were necessary to improve governance and ensure a more effective distribution of resources among the people.

Tata chairman to step down amid trust tensions

NEW DELHI: N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, has decided not to seek another term at the helm of India’s major business conglomerate, bringing his leadership tenure towards an end after growing differences with the group’s influential charitable trust arm. Chandrasekaran, 63, said on Wednesday that he would remain chairman until his current term expires in February. He said greater certainty over the group’s future leadership was necessary because several major projects were at critical stages. The decision follows months of disagreement between Chandrasekaran and Tata Trusts, which controls about 66% of Tata Sons. The two sides have reportedly differed over several important strategic and governance issues. Among the disputed matters were the future ownership and structure of Tata Sons, whether the company should pursue a stock market listing, losses at Air India, the proposed departure of a minority shareholder and the composition of the board. Tata Sons had postponed a decision on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment in February after Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, opposed extending his tenure. Six months later, the issue remained unresolved. A person familiar with Chandrasekaran’s decision said the disagreement with Tata Trusts was the sole reason behind his decision not to seek another term. Tata Trusts has not publicly commented on the development. Leadership change comes at difficult time Chandrasekaran’s planned departure comes as the Tata Group faces challenges across several major businesses. Air India, which is controlled by Tata, has been struggling with losses following its return to private ownership. Tata’s automotive operations are also facing pressure, including weaker performance at Jaguar Land Rover. The group’s electronics business has additionally faced the consequences of a recent data leak that affected major customers, including Apple and Tesla. The leadership uncertainty immediately affected investor sentiment. Shares of Tata Consultancy Services, where Chandrasekaran spent most of his career, fell around 5% following news of his planned departure. Tata Motors also declined, while Tata Steel and Titan recorded smaller losses. From TCS intern to Tata chairman Chandrasekaran joined Tata Consultancy Services as an intern in 1987 and spent his entire corporate career with the information technology company. He rose through the ranks and became TCS chief executive in 2009. He was appointed chairman of Tata Sons in 2017. He became the first chairman of Tata Sons who was not a member of the Tata family or from the Parsi community. Under his leadership, Tata expanded its presence across technology, automobiles, aviation, electronics and consumer businesses. The Tata Group is one of India’s oldest and most prominent business organisations. Its companies operate across a wide range of sectors, with products and services ranging from salt and consumer goods to automobiles, hotels, aviation and software. The group’s publicly listed companies had a combined market value of hundreds of billions of dollars at the end of March, highlighting the potential significance of any leadership transition at Tata Sons. Tata’s history has also included previous disputes between its corporate leadership and charitable trusts. One of the most prominent occurred in 2016, when the Tata Sons board removed chairman Cyrus Mistry following a bitter dispute involving governance and the group’s leadership.

US replaces warship in Mideast as crew faces mental health crisis

The US Department of Defence has dispatched the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the Middle East, replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln following mounting concerns over living conditions and mental health struggles among sailors aboard the long-deployed vessel. The USS George Washington departed Da Nang, Vietnam, passing through the Strait of Malacca toward the Indian Ocean. The deployment temporarily leaves the Asia-Pacific region without a US aircraft carrier presence, reflecting a strategic shift under the Trump administration, which views China as a manageable regional presence rather than a primary global threat. The deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln has surpassed 260 uninterrupted days at sea, setting a modern record without a port call. Operational demands linked to the conflict with Iran disrupted traditional supply hubs, leading to severe shortages of fresh food, clean water, and hygiene items, alongside broken sanitation facilities and lost mail. Reports have also highlighted safety concerns and multiple incidents of sailors attempting to jump overboard. Congressional leaders have demanded answers regarding the ship’s operational conditions. Senator Richard Blumenthal pressed defense officials on fleet sustainability, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to be removed from his post. Hegseth rejected the criticisms, stating that reports of deteriorating conditions aboard the carrier were completely misrepresented.

Iran says Hormuz cannot be seized by ‘tweet or w…

Iran has rejected US threats over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi declaring that the waterway cannot be taken over through a presidential order, social media post, aircraft carrier or election speech. Gharibabadi’s remarks came after US President Donald Trump threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory, according to Iranian media reports. The comments have added another layer of tension to an already volatile confrontation between Washington and Tehran. Writing on X, Gharibabadi said the strategic waterway could not be brought under American control through political statements or military pressure. He argued that decisions concerning the strait remained in Iran’s hands. “The Strait of Hormuz was, is and will remain Iranian,” Gharibabadi said, stressing that Tehran would determine when the passage could be opened or closed. The deputy foreign minister also said Iran was not intimidated by American threats and would continue its blockade until Washington acknowledged what he described as its “strategic defeats” and abandoned what he called unrealistic expectations. Trump has separately warned that he could soon announce plans to designate the Strait of Hormuz as US territory. His reported comments have intensified concerns over the future of one of the world’s most important energy corridors. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. A major disruption to traffic through the narrow waterway could have significant consequences for global energy markets because substantial volumes of oil and gas pass through it. Iran’s latest statement therefore carries significance far beyond its dispute with Washington. Any prolonged confrontation around the strait could affect commercial shipping, energy supplies and international markets. The exchange of threats also highlights the broader strategic struggle between Iran and the United States, with both sides showing little sign of backing down. For Tehran, the message is clear: control of Hormuz is being presented as a matter of sovereignty and national security, while Washington’s threats are being dismissed as insufficient to alter Iran’s position.
