Jamaat-e-Islami storms streets over petrol levy

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has staged sit-ins in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar against the petroleum levy, rising fuel prices and inflation.

In Karachi, a JI rally led by Karachi chief Munim Zafar reached Fawara Chowk. The party had announced a sit-in outside the Governor House to protest the petroleum levy.

JI workers are moving towards the Governor House from the Sindh High Court. Party activists have been raising concerns over the impact of the petroleum levy and rising fuel prices on the public.

Following the sit-in at Fawara Chowk, the road leading towards the Press Club and Arts Council remains open for traffic. Police personnel have also been deployed near the Governor House to maintain security and manage the situation.

In Lahore, JI workers staged a sit-in at Faisal Chowk on Mall Road, near the Chief Minister’s House. JI Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also reached the protest site and joined the demonstrators.

The protest in Lahore was led by JI Punjab chief Javed Kasuri and other party leaders. The protesters are demanding relief from rising petroleum prices and the petroleum levy.

The party has also criticised the increasing burden of inflation on ordinary citizens. JI leaders have called for measures to reduce the financial pressure faced by the public.

In Peshawar, JI workers staged a sit-in outside the Governor House. The protest has resulted in the closure of the road up to the Sadar Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Chowk.

JI Deputy Emir Liaquat Baloch is scheduled to address the protesters in Peshawar. Party leaders are expected to highlight their demands regarding petroleum prices, the levy and inflation.

The demonstrations are part of JI’s wider campaign against the petroleum levy and rising prices. The party has announced protests in different cities to pressure the government to provide relief to consumers.

JI leaders have argued that increases in petroleum prices affect the prices of transport, food and other essential goods. They have demanded that the government reconsider the petroleum levy and take steps to control inflation.

    SEF, Sindh Boy Scouts launch initiative to expand scouting across Foundation-assisted schools*

    KARACHI: The Sindh Education Foundation (SEF), Government of Sindh has initiated a collaboration with the Sindh Boy Scouts Association by holding a Group Scout Leadership Seminar aimed at promoting leadership, discipline and community service among students enrolled in Foundation Assisted Schools. The seminar, held at the Sindh Boy Scouts Association headquarters in Karachi, brought together representatives from 32 Foundation Assisted Schools, including head teachers, faculty members and students. The event was attended by SEF Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari, Deputy Managing Director Shahpara Rizvi, Regional Head Karachi Ashfaque Hussain Meerani, senior directors, assistant directors and other officials. The Sindh Boy Scouts Association was represented by Provincial Scout Secretary Syed Akhter Meer, and other office-bearers. Addressing the seminar, Provincial Scout Secretary Syed Akhter Meer welcomed the participation of SEF schools and said introducing students to the history and values of scouting would encourage them to become part of a global movement focused on leadership, character building and service. He also recalled the support extended to the scouting movement by the late Prof Dr Anita Ghulam Ali during her tenure at SEF, saying it was encouraging to witness the Foundation continuing the same commitment under the leadership of Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari. Participants were also briefed on the history of the scouting movement in Sindh, its achievements and future roadmap through a presentation highlighting the organisation’s contribution to youth development. Former senior bureaucrat Ghulam Ali Pasha said leadership and discipline could not be developed through classroom education alone, stressing that scouting provides young people with practical exposure to teamwork, responsibility and community service. He described such initiatives as essential for preparing students to become confident and responsible leaders. Speaking on the occasion, SEF Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari said the Foundation’s mandate extended beyond improving access to education and academic outcomes. “Alongside quality education, we want our students to develop leadership, discipline and a sense of responsibility.     Salman Raja demands Imran’s medical access

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Salman Akram Raja has called for meetings between the party’s founder, Imran Khan, and his sisters and medical team. Raja questioned the reason for preventing regular medical consultations. He said the issue was particularly important because of concerns about Imran Khan’s health. The PTI leader also discussed the former prime minister’s political activities. He said Imran Khan had the right to express his political views. However, Raja said the party was prepared to ensure that political discussions did not take place if they could affect Imran Khan’s health. He said the priority at present was his medical well-being and access to proper healthcare. Raja said the matter would be taken before the court next week.     SBP reserves climb to $17.26bn

    Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) posted a slight increase during the week ending July 17. However, the country’s overall liquid reserves recorded a small decline as commercial banks’ holdings decreased. According to the latest figures released by the central bank, SBP’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $33 million, taking the total to $17.26 billion. The increase reflects a gradual improvement in the country’s external financial position. Despite the rise in the central bank’s reserves, Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves slipped by $5.9 million to $22.67 billion. The decline was caused by a fall in the reserves held by commercial banks. Commercial banks’ net foreign exchange reserves dropped by $38.7 million, bringing their total holdings to $5.41 billion. As a result, Pakistan’s total foreign reserves now provide import cover for nearly 2.5 months, highlighting the need for further improvement in external inflows. The Pakistani rupee remained stable in the interbank market. It closed at Rs277.90 against the US dollar, compared with Rs277.91 a day earlier. The slight gain came as the US dollar also remained mostly steady in global markets despite continued geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan declined sharply after international bullion prices fell by more than two percent. The price of 24-karat gold per tola dropped by Rs1,800 to Rs432,036. The price of 10 grams of gold fell by Rs1,543 to Rs370,401. Silver prices also moved lower, with the per tola rate declining by Rs33 to Rs6,370. The decline followed a strong rally in the previous trading session when gold prices had increased significantly in the domestic market. Internationally, gold prices fell after investors shifted their focus to rising oil prices and expectations that the US Federal Reserve may continue raising interest rates to control inflation. Spot gold traded near $4,047 per ounce, while US gold futures also recorded noticeable losses. Global energy markets remained under pressure as Brent crude oil climbed to around $100 per barrel. Rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to oil supplies supported higher crude prices. Analysts believe that increasing oil prices could push inflation higher around the world. This may encourage central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, to maintain a tighter monetary policy. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of gold because the precious metal does not provide any interest or fixed return to investors. As borrowing costs increase, investors often shift towards interest-bearing assets.
