Saeed Ghani rejects MQM’s demand for new provinc…

Sindh Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani has rejected the demand for dividing Sindh and creating a new province, saying that no matter how much pressure is exerted, a new province will not be established in the province.

Ghani accused the MQM of creating hatred by repeatedly raising the issue of a separate province. He said several other political parties were also opposed to dividing Sindh, while MQM leader Mustafa Kamal had himself acknowledged that people in Sukkur had rejected the idea of a new province.

The provincial minister questioned the political standing of a few MQM leaders and said that even within the party, its members were not willing to sit together.

Speaking about local government arrangements, Ghani said protests had previously been held against the dual local government system in Sindh. He maintained that Karachi had been given a separate system under an agreement reached with the MQM.

Commenting on Jamaat-e-Islami’s protests, Ghani said the party claims to be protesting over public issues, but shutting down Karachi at multiple locations would not resolve people’s problems. He advised JI leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman to hold protests at locations where people would respond sympathetically.

Ghani also criticized demands for abolishing the levy, questioning whether making life difficult for Karachi’s residents would force Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to accept the protesters’ demands.

He said all provinces contribute their share of revenue to the federation, adding that Sindh had also fulfilled its financial responsibilities. According to Ghani, the political and administrative circumstances in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are different, and the demand for a new province in Sindh remains unacceptable.

    Islamabad: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that banned militant groups, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), are operating from Afghan territory under the protection of the Afghan Taliban. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, Dar described terrorism originating from Afghanistan as a serious threat to regional peace and stability. He said these militant groups continue to carry out attacks from across the border, posing a major security challenge for Pakistan. Dar stated that Pakistan has witnessed more than 2,000 terrorist attacks so far this year, resulting in the deaths of over 560 civilians. He also claimed that evidence had emerged linking some Afghan nationals to several of these attacks. The foreign minister urged SCO member states to call on the Afghan Taliban to fulfill their counterterrorism commitments and prevent Afghan territory from being used by militant organizations. Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, Dar said dialogue, diplomacy, and mutual respect remain the only sustainable solutions to regional disputes. He highlighted Pakistan’s role in promoting diplomatic engagement and stressed the importance of supporting ongoing peace initiatives. Dar also noted that Pakistan hosted talks between Iran and the United States in April 2026, which, according to him, led to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in June 2026. He urged the international community to support diplomatic efforts while remaining vigilant against attempts to undermine the peace process. Looking ahead, Dar said Pakistan will assume the chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State in September 2026 and host the SCO Summit in 2027. During its chairmanship, Pakistan plans to prioritize regional connectivity, trade, agricultural cooperation, youth exchanges, and stronger people-to-people ties. On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Dar also met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, regional developments, and efforts to promote peace and stability. Dar emphasized the need for restraint, de-escalation, and continued diplomatic engagement in addressing regional challenges, while both sides agreed to maintain close coordination on issues of mutual interest.

    Two arrested in Rs220m Karachi heist

    Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a Rs220 million theft in Karachi, apprehending them from Jhang after tracing their alleged involvement in a series of criminal activities across Punjab and Sindh. According to the spokesperson for the DIG Operations, police arrested suspect Mehtab along with his relative, Abdul Rehman, during an operation in Jhang. The spokesperson said Mehtab has 18 previous cases of theft and burglary registered against him. Investigators have also linked him to a major robbery in Karachi’s Saddar area in April, in which valuables worth around Rs220 million were reportedly stolen. Police said the two suspects had allegedly carried out thefts in several other cities, including Jhang, Faisalabad and Rahim Yar Khan. During the arrest operation, officers recovered a 9mm pistol and ammunition from Abdul Rehman, according to police. Authorities also recovered stolen property from the suspects that allegedly belonged to a theft case registered at Islamabad’s Ramna Police Station. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the suspects’ involvement in other criminal cases and to trace any additional stolen property.

    Lahore: Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari has strongly reacted to the statements made by Pakistan Peoples Party spokespersons, saying they should choose their words carefully and learn to respect their elders. She remarked that it was ironic that “those born out of a blackmailing mandate are now taunting us.” Azma Bokhari said PPP leaders repeatedly mock a person old enough to be their father by making faces and chanting “Raiwind, Raiwind.” She questioned whether they do not consider it disrespectful when their own leader ridicules someone of a father’s age. She further said that PPP leaders had collectively turned Raiwind into a subject of mockery and routinely insult senior individuals through their gestures and remarks. The Punjab Information Minister warned that if such abusive and disrespectful language continued, it would be met with an appropriate response. She added that Bilawal Bhutto is not some divine figure beyond criticism. Azma Bokhari further said that Bilawal Bhutto repeatedly mentions the names of Punjab’s cities in his speeches to spread falsehoods and misleading propaganda. She questioned whether his conduct was not both laughable and lacking in seriousness.

    India is likely to receive below average rainfall in August after recording near normal monsoon rains in July, according to the country’s weather department. The forecast has raised concerns about crop production and economic activity because millions of farmers depend on seasonal rainfall for agriculture. The India Meteorological Department said rainfall in August is expected to remain below 94 percent of the long period average. Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the combined rainfall for August and September, which make up the second half of the monsoon season, is also expected to stay below the long term average. The annual monsoon is vital for India’s economy, providing nearly 70 percent of the country’s yearly rainfall. It replenishes reservoirs, rivers and groundwater supplies while supporting agriculture in a country where almost half of all farmland relies entirely on rain instead of irrigation. Farming remains the primary source of income for about half of India’s population. Weather officials said moderate El Nino conditions are currently present in the Pacific Ocean and are expected to strengthen in the coming weeks. The phenomenon could become strong by September, increasing the likelihood of reduced rainfall across parts of India and other areas of Southeast Asia. El Nino is a recurring climate pattern caused by warmer than normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. It often disrupts weather systems around the world and has historically been linked to weaker monsoon seasons in India. Previous El Nino years have brought drought conditions that damaged crops, reduced agricultural output and forced the government to restrict exports of certain food grains. Despite the weaker outlook for August, rainfall improved significantly during July. India received one percent more rain than the long period average during the month, helping reduce the overall seasonal rainfall deficit. Since the monsoon began on June 1, the deficit has narrowed to 12.6 percent after reaching 35.4 percent at the end of June. The stronger rainfall in July also helped farmers recover from delays in planting caused by a slow start to the season. Agricultural experts say the improved weather allowed growers to speed up sowing in many regions after an uncertain beginning. However, analysts warn that below normal rainfall during August could still affect the development of crops that have recently been planted. Adequate rainfall during this stage of the growing season is considered essential for healthy crop growth and stable harvests. Government data shows that summer crop planting was nearly 25 percent lower than the previous year at the end of June. Since then, the situation has improved considerably, with the shortfall shrinking to less than five percent as better rainfall encouraged farmers to increase sowing. The latest weather forecast has increased attention on the remainder of the monsoon season, as rainfall over the next two months will play a key role in determining agricultural output, food supplies and overall economic performance in one of the world’s largest farming economies.
