Monsoon fury raises flood risks across Pakistan, N…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s disaster management authorities have issued a fresh flood alert as intensified monsoon rains continue to push water levels higher in major rivers, raising concerns over flooding in several parts of the country. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said river flows are expected to increase significantly between August 2 and 4, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and remain alert to changing weather conditions. According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), high flooding has been observed in the Lehri River at Head Gogi, while Nullah Palkhu near Wazirabad is experiencing medium-level flooding. The Indus River is currently witnessing low-level flooding at Kalabagh, Chashma, Guddu and Sukkur, while similar conditions have been reported at Head Nari on the Nari River. The NDMA warned that the Chenab River is likely to experience high water flows at Marala, with low to medium flooding anticipated at Khanki and Qadirabad. Water levels are also expected to rise in the Jhelum, Ravi and Kabul rivers and their tributaries as monsoon activity intensifies. Officials cautioned that streams connected to the Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi rivers could swell to medium or high levels. Meanwhile, water flows in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers will largely depend on releases from reservoirs across the border. The authority also expressed concern over the possibility of flash floods in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, as well as seasonal streams in central and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan. In addition, urban flooding and waterlogging remain a serious threat in several cities, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta and other parts of Sindh due to continued heavy rainfall. The NDMA advised residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways, monitor weather updates before travelling, and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities. It also encouraged the public to use the official Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for real-time weather warnings and emergency information. Separately, the Prime Minister’s Emergency Response Committee (ERC) held its 10th consecutive daily review meeting to assess the country’s monsoon situation. The meeting, chaired virtually by Planning Minister Prof Ahsan Iqbal, brought together federal ministries, provincial governments, disaster management authorities and senior administrative officials. During the briefing, the NDMA presented the latest updates on weather conditions, casualties, infrastructure damage, rescue operations and rehabilitation efforts. Officials informed the committee that deputy commissioners in all high-risk districts had already been directed to remain fully prepared for any emergency. The committee was told that recent heavy rains had caused flooding in multiple regions, with coordinated rescue and relief operations continuing through federal, provincial and district authorities. Weather experts also forecast more rainfall across northern and central Pakistan in the coming days, while isolated showers are expected in southeastern Sindh. The NDMA highlighted that relief activities are being carried out with the support of both national and international humanitarian organisations. Officials further noted that most monsoon-related fatalities this season resulted from the collapse of unsafe and poorly constructed buildings, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations and greater public awareness. The ERC commended the efforts of government institutions, provincial administrations, district authorities, the armed forces and rescue teams for their ongoing response. It directed all relevant departments to strengthen coordination, maintain maximum preparedness, accelerate relief and rehabilitation work, and take preventive measures to minimise the impact of future weather emergencies.

Leaked FIFA letter congratulates Argentina on World Cup runner-up finish

A letter written by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Argentine Football Association President Claudio Tapia has reportedly surfaced amid an ongoing FIFA investigation into the post-match confrontation following the 2026 World Cup final. In the letter, Infantino referred to Argentina’s defeat against Spain in the final played on July 19, 2026. He congratulated Argentina on securing the silver medal and praised the team’s overall performance throughout the tournament. Infantino described Argentina’s World Cup campaign as an impressive achievement. He also praised the players and head coach Lionel Scaloni for their hard work, professionalism and commitment to football. The letter has emerged at a sensitive time for Argentine football. FIFA is currently investigating a confrontation between players following the final. Tensions reportedly rose after Argentina lost to Spain in extra time. The atmosphere remained tense during the trophy presentation, with most Argentine players reportedly turning their backs while the Spanish team received the trophy. A physical altercation between players also reportedly took place after the match. FIFA is examining the incident as part of its formal disciplinary process. The leaked correspondence, however, focuses on Argentina’s sporting achievement rather than the post-match controversy. Infantino’s message praised the team for reaching the final and securing the runners-up position. Sending formal congratulatory letters to medal-winning teams is a customary FIFA practice following the conclusion of major international tournaments. Argentina’s silver-medal finish marked the culmination of a strong World Cup campaign, despite the team falling short against Spain in the final.

PPP workers’ convention in Lahore faces hurd…

LAHORE: Preparations for the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) workers’ convention at Greater Iqbal Park were halted on Friday after the Lahore district administration said the party had not secured formal written permission to hold the event. The party had already set up a stage and made extensive arrangements for the convention, which is scheduled for July 25. The gathering was also expected to be followed by celebrations marking President Asif Ali Zardari’s birthday on July 26. District authorities questioned the use of the public venue without official approval and asked the PPP leadership to explain why preparations had begun before the necessary permission was obtained. Lahore PPP President Faisal Mir insisted the party had moved forward after receiving verbal assurances that there was no objection to the event from the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office. According to him, the preparations were launched in good faith based on those assurances, but officials later intervened and stopped the work. Mir criticized the administration’s actions, claiming access to the venue had been restricted and vehicles carrying chairs and other equipment had been prevented from reaching the site. He maintained that the party remained committed to holding the convention peacefully and said he was prepared to face arrest if necessary. The Chief Minister’s Office did not comment on claims that approval had been communicated through the chief minister’s principal secretary. PPP leaders also shared videos on social media showing workers at the venue, along with the stage and seating arrangements prepared for the convention, reaffirming the party’s determination to proceed with the event. Party sources acknowledged that written permission had not been obtained but argued that verbal approval was sufficient to begin preparations. They added that local police had been informed in advance about the gathering. The convention was expected to feature a large stage, with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari scheduled to address workers via video link. Senior party leaders, including Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Hassan Murtaza, and Qamar Zaman Kaira, were also expected to attend. Officials indicated that permission could still be granted if the required formalities were completed. However, they noted that approving the PPP event without following standard procedures could complicate decisions on similar requests from other political parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has sought permission for a public gathering in Lahore next month.

Bilawal hits back at Nawaz: Kashmiris ‘ not rea…

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday delivered a sharp riposte to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, declaring that the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) are “not ready to bargain away their rights”  whether in Kashmir or Mirpur . The exchange comes a day before the first phase of elections in AJK, with Mirpur set to vote on Monday, and amid allegations of pre-poll rigging by the PPP after the PML-N gifted 10 e-buses to Muzaffarabad . In a recent campaign speech, Nawaz had invoked Bilawal by name, stating that Kashmir should not be mistaken for Kashmir, nor Mirpur for Mirpurkhas the districts of Sindh where the PPP has been in power for years . Responding via a video statement on social media, Bilawal began with a pointed, “Mian sahib, please don’t take offence,” while tagging Nawaz’s X account . “Whether it’s Kashmir or Kashmir, Mirpur or Mirpurkhas, not only do their names resemble each other; their temperament matches too, their honour matches too, and so does the courage to stand up for their rights,” Bilawal said . The PPP chairman emphasized that neither Kashmiris nor the people of Mirpurkhas would allow anyone to “rob them politically of their right to governance and right to ownership.” He reiterated his commitment to securing for the people of Kashmir the rights to governance, ownership, and employment “the same rights that every Pakistani citizen is entitled to.” Bilawal added that if these fundamental rights were ensured, “they won’t need gifts of this sort. They will arrange their own development,” a clear reference to the PML-N’s e-bus initiative . Urging his supporters to turn out in large numbers on polling day, Bilawal concluded with a defiant slogan: “Progress too! Authority too! Employment too! And Kashmir’s decision by Kashmiris!” The war of words underscores the high political stakes in the AJK elections, with both major parties locked in a fierce contest for control of the region .

Russian missile strike kills 9 in Kyiv

At least nine people were killed and 23 others injured after Russia launched a missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Saturday morning, according to Ukrainian emergency authorities. The Ukrainian Emergency Service said the casualties included two young boys. Officials also reported that one of the injured victims remained in critical condition as rescue and emergency teams continued their operations across the affected areas. The missile strike caused extensive damage to several buildings and triggered fires at multiple locations in the capital. Emergency workers rushed to the scene to extinguish the fires, secure damaged structures and search through piles of debris for survivors. Rescue teams continued clearing the rubble in an effort to locate anyone who might still be trapped beneath collapsed sections of buildings. The attack added to growing concerns over the security situation in Kyiv, which has faced an increase in Russian missile and drone strikes in recent months. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly warned that Russian attacks continue to pose a serious threat to civilians as well as critical infrastructure. The latest assault also renewed Ukraine’s calls for stronger air defence capabilities. Kyiv has been pressing its Western allies to provide additional advanced defence systems and ammunition, arguing that stronger air protection remains essential to defending major cities and strategic facilities from Russian missile and drone attacks. Ukraine has particularly sought additional Patriot air defence systems, which can intercept certain types of high-speed missiles and provide protection against aerial threats. Ukrainian officials have consistently described air defence as one of their most urgent military requirements as the conflict continues. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said discussions are continuing over the possibility of providing Ukraine with technology linked to the production of Patriot missile systems. Trump indicated that talks remain ongoing but made clear that Washington has not yet reached a final decision on the matter. The issue is significant for Ukraine, which has sought to strengthen its ability to defend its territory while reducing its dependence on foreign supplies. Access to advanced air defence technology could potentially help Kyiv expand its defensive capabilities and respond more effectively to repeated missile attacks. The latest strike comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to put civilians and urban centres at risk. Kyiv remains a key target, and Ukrainian officials have repeatedly appealed to international partners for greater military support and stronger air defence measures to protect the capital and other major population centres.
