15.91% spike exposes federal spending challenge

Controlling the rise in federal government administrative expenses has become a major challenge.

Despite repeated claims of reducing expenditure and implementing austerity measures, the cost of running federal government affairs has increased by 15.91 per cent.

The rise has raised concerns over the government’s efforts to control its administrative spending. The increase comes despite measures announced by the government to reduce unnecessary expenditure and promote financial discipline.

According to the available details, spending on running government affairs has exceeded both the official target and the revised estimates. This means that actual administrative expenditure has remained higher than the levels projected by the government.

The increase in spending also highlights the difficulties faced by the federal government in keeping its administrative costs under control. The government has been under pressure to reduce non-development expenditure and improve the efficiency of public spending.

Authorities have introduced various austerity measures in an attempt to limit government expenditure. These measures were aimed at reducing unnecessary costs and ensuring better management of public resources.

However, the latest increase indicates that controlling administrative spending remains a significant challenge. The higher-than-target expenditure could also put additional pressure on the government’s overall fiscal position.

The development comes at a time when the federal government is seeking to maintain fiscal discipline and reduce unnecessary spending. Higher administrative costs could make it more difficult to achieve these objectives.

The government is expected to face continued pressure to review its spending patterns and identify areas where expenditure can be reduced

Aaliya Hamza allegedly attacked inside Kot Lakhpat…

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has alleged that party leader Aaliya Hamza was attacked by fellow inmates inside Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail. Aaliya Hamza is currently imprisoned at the facility. PTI leaders claimed that she faced a physical assault following a dispute over access to water in a jail toilet. According to the party, one female inmate and several other prisoners were involved in the incident. PTI representatives alleged that the situation became serious when the inmates allegedly tried to strangle Aaliya. They described the incident as an attempt on her life. The allegations have raised concerns within the party about her safety and security while in custody. PTI leaders Sanam Javed and Falak Javed were also present in the jail, according to the party’s account. They allegedly intervened during the incident and helped protect Aaliya from the other inmates. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said the party had received disturbing information about the alleged incident. He called on the Punjab government and jail authorities to ensure Aaliya’s safety. Raja also demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the matter. He said officials found responsible for negligence should face action. He also called for legal proceedings if any jail staff were found to have failed in their duties. Raja said the party would consult Aaliya’s family about further legal steps. He added that a petition could be filed in court seeking a medical examination and additional protection for the jailed leader. However, prison authorities have rejected PTI’s account of a physical assault. Punjab Inspector General Prisons Mian Salik Jalal said there was no physical clash between the prisoners. He said the inmates had only exchanged heated words over fetching water from a toilet. The conflicting accounts have created questions about what exactly happened inside the jail. The PTI has called for a formal inquiry, while prison authorities maintain that no physical confrontation took place. Aaliya was arrested by Punjab police in March. Authorities had alleged that she was evading arrest and organising gatherings involving PTI lawmakers, election candidates and party workers outside Adiala Jail. She was later transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. Her arrest took place while she was in Lahore visiting family members during Eidul Fitr. She was initially taken to Shadman Police Station before being moved to jail. The PTI has strongly criticised the cases against Aaliya. Party leaders have repeatedly described her arrest and legal proceedings as politically motivated.

US military reports diverting 35 ships amid Iran m…

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has reportedly stated that 35 commercial vessels were diverted as part of ongoing maritime operations involving Iran, according to media reports citing an official statement. The reported developments have drawn attention to maritime security in the strategically important Gulf region. According to the statement shared by CENTCOM, the U.S. military continues to enforce maritime measures that were reportedly reintroduced last month. Officials claimed that 35 commercial ships had been redirected during the operation. The statement also alleged that two vessels were disabled, while two others were boarded for inspection or brought under operational control. These claims have not been independently verified. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, serving as a major transit route for global oil and gas exports. Any military activity or disruption in the area has the potential to affect international shipping, energy markets, and regional stability. As a result, developments involving the waterway are closely monitored by governments, businesses, and security analysts worldwide. Separate reports indicated that Iranian officials denied speculation regarding any change in policy concerning the Strait of Hormuz. According to those reports, Iran maintained that there had been no new decision affecting the waterway and that its existing policy remained unchanged. Independent confirmation of these statements is limited, and official positions may evolve as the situation develops. Tensions between the United States and Iran have periodically affected maritime security in the Gulf over the years. Military deployments, sanctions, and regional disputes have contributed to an environment where commercial shipping operators closely follow official advisories and security updates before entering the region. As the situation continues to develop, additional information from official government statements, international maritime organizations, and independent reporting will be important in providing a clearer understanding of events. Given the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz, any confirmed changes in maritime operations could have broader implications for global trade, energy supplies, and regional security.

Katie Holmes reportedly supports Suri’s decision…

Katie Holmes is reportedly standing firmly behind her daughter Suri after the 20-year-old legally dropped the surname of her father, Hollywood star Tom Cruise. The reported decision has sparked widespread discussion, with sources claiming Holmes was neither shocked nor upset by the move, believing it reflects the independent person Suri has become.  According to a report by Page Six, Holmes fully supports Suri’s decision to legally change her name from Suri Cruise to Suri Noelle, adopting her mother’s middle name as her new surname. An insider told the outlet that the actress “wasn’t surprised” by the decision because it was entirely in keeping with her daughter’s personality. “Katie wasn’t surprised by Suri’s decision to legally drop Cruise from her last name because that’s just who Suri is,” the source said, adding that Holmes has always encouraged her daughter to make thoughtful decisions for herself.  The name change reportedly became official through voter registration records in Pennsylvania, where Suri attends Carnegie Mellon University. However, it wasn’t a sudden decision. Suri had already begun using the surname “Noelle” publicly, including during her high school graduation in 2024, suggesting the change had been in progress for some time.  Holmes and Cruise welcomed Suri in 2006 and were married later that year. The former couple divorced in 2012, after which Holmes raised Suri primarily in New York. Over the years, reports have frequently suggested that Tom Cruise and his daughter have remained estranged, while Holmes has maintained a close and supportive relationship with Suri.  Sources close to the family insist that Holmes did not pressure Suri into making the legal change. Instead, they describe the decision as one that Suri reached on her own as she entered adulthood and sought to establish her own identity beyond her famous parents. Holmes is reportedly proud of her daughter’s confidence, maturity and willingness to make choices she believes are right for herself.  The development has attracted significant public attention, partly because Suri has spent much of her life away from the Hollywood spotlight. Despite growing up as the daughter of two globally recognized actors, she has largely maintained a private lifestyle while focusing on her education. Neither Katie Holmes nor Tom Cruise has publicly commented on the legal name change. Still, the reports have fueled conversations about family dynamics, personal identity and the challenges faced by children of high-profile celebrities. For now, insiders say Holmes’ priority remains unchanged: supporting Suri as she builds her own future on her own terms.

Customs seize $55,000 from Dubai-bound family

KARACHI: Customs authorities have recovered a large amount of foreign currency from six passengers travelling from Karachi to Dubai. According to officials, the passengers belonged to the same family. Authorities recovered $55,000 in US currency and Rs950,000 in Pakistani cash from them. Officials said the passengers were carrying foreign currency above the limit permitted by the State Bank of Pakistan. The currency had also not been properly declared before their travel. The authorities took action under the Customs Act 1969 after the undeclared currency was discovered. Customs officials said the case involved six members of one family. The recovery was made during checks at the airport before the passengers could leave the country. Officials said the passengers had exceeded the permissible limit for carrying foreign currency abroad. They also failed to meet the required declaration procedures. Customs authorities stressed that travellers must comply with regulations governing the movement of foreign currency. Passengers carrying amounts above the permitted limits are required to follow the applicable declaration procedures. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of checks at international airports. Customs officials regularly monitor passengers and baggage to detect undeclared currency and other restricted items. Authorities said preventing currency smuggling remains a priority. They are maintaining strict checks to identify attempts to move large amounts of undeclared foreign currency out of Pakistan. Customs officials said they are following a zero-tolerance policy against currency smuggling. They added that action would be taken against anyone found violating the relevant laws. The recovered amount included both US dollars and Pakistani rupees. The officials did not provide further details about the intended use of the money or the identities of the passengers. The case also highlights the need for travellers to understand currency rules before leaving Pakistan. Failure to declare currency or carrying amounts beyond the permitted limits can lead to legal action under the applicable laws. Authorities are continuing proceedings in the case under the Customs Act 1969. The recovery is among the latest incidents showing the role of airport customs checks in preventing the illegal movement of currency. Officials said such measures are necessary to protect Pakistan’s financial system and enforce foreign exchange regulations. Customs authorities reiterated that passengers travelling abroad must comply with all currency declaration requirements. They said strict action would continue against attempts to move undeclared currency across Pakistan’s international borders.

Kubra Khan gets emotional over Doctor Bahu wrap

Doctor Bahu wrapped up last week, and while viewers were divided over the finale, star Kubra Khan had only warmth and gratitude for her team. In an Instagram reel posted on Wednesday, Kubra shared behind-the-scenes clips from filming. She explained she deliberately left out the show’s OST, since audiences had already heard it enough times. Instead, she said the experience reminded her of a line from Elton John’s “Your Song.” She described the mix of emotions as something both funny and hard to hide. She said Doctor Bahu carried a similar weight for her, tied not just to the script but to the entire set. She believes a good atmosphere on set makes half the work easier, and this project proved it. Nine months of filming passed quickly, she said, thanks to how much fun the cast and crew had together. She joked that actors are known to laugh during romantic scenes, but on this set, they laughed during sad ones too. Kubra admitted the cast and crew were not quite like family, despite what people often claim. She compared the bond more to friendships built in high school or college, where everyone sticks together no matter what. Whether it was rain, sunshine, or a rough day, the team always supported one another. Without wanting to sound overly sentimental, she credited the people behind the project for making the experience special. She specifically thanked director Mehreen Jabbar, writer Sanam Mehdi Zaryab, and director of photography Tayyab Shah. Khan also expressed appreciation for her fellow cast members. She emphasized the crew’s role in particular, crediting them for making the set such a beautiful place to work. She ended her note on a reflective note, saying she was not sure she would ever work with a team quite like this again. Still, she said she would always look back on the experience fondly. Khan added that the show has raised her expectations for future projects. She admitted the bar now feels impossibly high after her time on Doctor Bahu. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DbnI7m0on5o/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
