FBR collects record Rs44bn income tax from salarie…

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collected Rs44 billion in income tax from the salaried class during July, the first month of the current financial year.

The collection was higher than the amount collected from salaried individuals during the same month in the previous two years. FBR had collected Rs42 billion from the salaried class in July 2025 and Rs30 billion in July 2024.

According to sources, the higher collection from salaried individuals came despite an overall decline in income tax collection in some sectors. The figures indicate that the salaried class continued to contribute a significant share of income tax revenue at the beginning of the new financial year.

Sources said property buying and selling transactions increased during July this year. However, tax collection from property transactions remained lower compared with the corresponding period last year.

The development comes after the government introduced changes to income tax rates for several salaried income brackets in the federal budget for the current financial year. The government reduced tax rates on annual incomes above Rs2.2 million as part of its budget measures.

Under the revised tax structure, the income tax rate for individuals earning between Rs2.2 million and Rs3.2 million annually was reduced from 23 per cent to 20 per cent.

Similarly, the tax rate for the annual income bracket of Rs3.2 million to Rs4.1 million was reduced from 30 per cent to 25 per cent.

For individuals earning between Rs4.1 million and Rs5.6 million annually, the income tax rate was reduced from 35 per cent to 29 per cent.

The tax rate for people earning between Rs5.6 million and Rs7 million annually was also reduced from 35 per cent to 32 per cent.

Despite these reductions in tax rates, FBR’s collection from salaried individuals increased in July compared with the previous two years. The figures show that the tax contribution from the salaried class remained strong despite changes in the tax slabs.

In their messages on World Hepatitis Day, both leaders stressed the need for sustained action, public awareness and collective efforts to control the spread of hepatitis and protect people from its serious health consequences. President Asif Ali Zardari said Pakistan remains among the countries most affected by hepatitis C, making it essential for the government, healthcare institutions and the public to work together to address the challenge. He emphasized that greater awareness, preventive measures and timely diagnosis can play a key role in reducing the burden of the disease. The president called for a strong and coordinated national response to hepatitis and said Pakistan must maintain its efforts to achieve its targets. He also highlighted the importance of preventing hepatitis C from becoming a major public health threat and reaffirmed the goal of controlling the disease by 2030. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also reiterated the government’s commitment to eliminating hepatitis from the country. He said the government launched a national programme for the elimination of hepatitis C in 2025, under which millions of citizens are receiving free screening and treatment. The prime minister said the government will continue expanding efforts to identify patients at an early stage and provide them with access to necessary medical care. He stressed that the federal and provincial governments, along with the private sector, must join hands to achieve the national objective. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed confidence that through coordinated efforts, improved healthcare services, public awareness and wider access to screening and treatment, Pakistan can achieve its target of eliminating hepatitis C by 2030.

    Flash flood warning issued for New York, New Jersey

    Authorities have issued a flash flood warning for New York City, parts of New Jersey and western Long Island as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds swept across the region, raising the threat of widespread flooding and travel disruptions. Weather officials warned that intense downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems, flood roads and affect low-lying areas. The flash flood warning remained in effect through Monday morning, while a broader flood watch was issued for New York City and northern and central New Jersey until the evening. Forecasters also declared a First Alert Weather Day, citing an elevated risk of flash flooding and severe thunderstorms. Moist and humid air moving into the region is expected to produce rainfall rates of one to three inches per hour, with total rainfall forecast between one and three inches. Some isolated locations could receive even higher amounts, significantly increasing the risk of flooding. In response to the severe weather threat, New York City Emergency Management activated its Flash Flood Emergency Plan. City crews were deployed to clear storm drains and catch basins in flood-prone neighbourhoods, while emergency teams were placed on standby to respond to flooded streets, fallen trees and stranded motorists. Officials warned that severe thunderstorms could also generate damaging wind gusts, increasing the possibility of power outages and hazardous driving conditions throughout the day. Meanwhile, a High Surf Advisory was issued for beaches south of New York City and across Long Island, where waves were expected to reach between six and ten feet. Authorities also warned of a high risk of dangerous rip currents and urged residents and visitors to stay out of the water until conditions improve. Temperatures were expected to remain in the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies. Weather experts forecast that storm activity would gradually weaken by Monday night, bringing an improvement in conditions.

    Telecom operators invest $178.57 million in Pakistan’s 5G rollout

    Pakistan’s major telecom operators have invested an estimated $178.57 million in the deployment of 5G networks across the country up to June 2026, the Senate has been informed. The investment details were presented in a written reply submitted by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications in response to a question raised by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri. According to the government’s data, Zong emerged as the largest investor in the country’s 5G rollout, committing around $98.9 million by June 2026. Jazz followed with an investment of approximately $59.67 million, while Ufone invested an estimated $20 million during the same period. The figures were based on information provided directly by the respective mobile network operators. No Foreign Investment Target Set for 5G Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja told the Senate that the government had not imposed any specific foreign direct investment (FDI) target on telecom companies as part of the country’s 5G rollout policy. She said the Policy Directive for the Spectrum Auction, issued on January 6, 2026, did not include a requirement for operators to attract a particular amount of foreign investment for the deployment of 5G services. The minister clarified that the investment figures presented before the Senate represented data supplied by the operators themselves. Operators Plan Additional 5G Investment Telecom companies are also preparing to increase their investment in 5G infrastructure during fiscal year 2026-27. Jazz has projected an additional investment of approximately $30.33 million, while Zong expects to spend around $39.9 million on further 5G deployment during the year. A specific investment projection for Ufone was not available at this stage. According to the written response, the company’s future investment figures will be shared once its ongoing merger-related activities are completed. The government also noted that Ufone’s previously reported $20 million investment in the 5G rollout was an estimated figure. More Than 1,100 Sites Upgraded to 5G The Senate was also informed that mobile operators had upgraded 1,136 sites to support 5G services across Pakistan by June 2026. Punjab recorded the highest number of upgraded sites, with 587 locations, reflecting the province’s large subscriber base and extensive telecom infrastructure. The regional breakdown showed:  Punjab: 587 5G-upgraded sites  Sindh: 262 sites  Islamabad Capital Territory: 192 sites Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 64 sites Balochistan: 31 sites No 5G-upgraded sites were reported in Gilgit-Baltistan or Azad Jammu and Kashmir in the province-wise figures submitted to the Senate. Pakistan Has 10,499 Fiberized Sites The government’s response also provided an update on the country’s broader telecom infrastructure, particularly the expansion of fiber-optic connectivity. Pakistan had a total of 10,499 fiberized telecom sites, with the overall fiberization rate standing at approximately 17.2 percent. Punjab had the largest number of fiberized sites at 6,153, followed by Sindh with 2,121 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 953. The figures for other regions were: Islamabad: 521 fiberized sites Balochistan: 417 sites Gilgit-Baltistan: 196 sites Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 138 sites Despite having fewer fiberized locations in absolute numbers, Gilgit-Baltistan recorded the highest fiberization rate at 36.3 percent. Islamabad ranked second with a rate of 30.4 percent. Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded the lowest fiberization rate at 9.5 percent. 5G Expansion Linked to Digital Connectivity The continued investment by telecom operators is expected to support the expansion of high-speed mobile connectivity and strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. The deployment of 5G technology is also being viewed as an important step toward improving mobile broadband capacity, supporting digital businesses and enabling emerging technologies that require faster and more reliable networks. With operators planning further investment during FY2026-27, the scale of Pakistan’s 5G network is expected to expand further. However, the pace of deployment will also depend on infrastructure development, fiberization, spectrum utilization and the completion of ongoing corporate and regulatory processes.

    Fauzia Haimani finishes fourth Ironman challenge

    Fauzia Haimani has done it again. The Pakistani athlete, who is based in Canada, has completed her fourth full Ironman triathlon. This latest finish came at the Ironman event held in Ottawa, where she once again showed off her fitness and endurance. The Ironman is widely considered one of the toughest challenges in endurance sports. It is not a single race. It is three gruelling events combined into one long day. Athletes start with a 3.8-kilometre swim. From there, they move straight into a 180-kilometre cycling stretch. The event then wraps up with a full 42.2-kilometre marathon. All three legs happen back to back, with no rest days in between. Completing all three takes serious physical and mental preparation. Fauzia finished the entire course in 15 hours, 22 minutes, and 35 seconds. Her swim alone took 1 hour and 45 minutes. She then moved on to cycling, completing that portion in 7 hours and 7 minutes. The final stretch, the marathon, took her 6 hours and 11 minutes to finish. This is not new territory for her. Fauzia has completed the full Ironman challenge three times before this latest finish. She first did it in 2021. She returned to complete it again in 2024, and once more in 2025. That makes this her fourth full Ironman overall. Her endurance résumé does not stop there. Alongside the full Ironman races, Fauzia has also completed the half Ironman challenge five separate times. Together, these accomplishments paint the picture of an athlete who has built real consistency in one of the most demanding sports out there. Events like these require months of training. Long swims, long rides, and long runs all need to be built up gradually. Athletes also have to manage nutrition, pacing, and recovery carefully to make it through such a demanding single-day event. Fauzia’s latest finish adds another achievement to her growing list. It also reflects the kind of discipline and determination it takes to keep coming back to one of the hardest physical challenges an athlete can attempt. Her continued participation in international endurance events also highlights the presence of Pakistani athletes on demanding global sporting stages, even outside more commonly covered sports.
