Two missing women, toddler found dead in Dinga pon…

GUJRAT: The bodies of three females, including a two-year-old girl, who had gone missing from the Dinga area a day earlier, were recovered from a pond in Mohallah Chaar Gah , police said. The deceased were identified as Arooj Fatima, Haleema Sadia and two-year-old Ruku Fatima. According to police, all three had gone missing from the jurisdiction of Dinga police station on August 25. Following their disappearance, a kidnapping case had been registered at Dinga police station on the complaint of the family. A search operation was underway when their bodies were found in a pond in Mohallah Chaar Gah. Police said a heavy contingent was deployed at the scene after the recovery of the bodies. Crime Scene Unit personnel and teams of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) also reached the site and collected evidence for further investigation. The bodies were later shifted to a hospital for post-mortem examinations. According to preliminary police findings, the three victims appeared to have died due to drowning. However, police said the matter was still being investigated from different angles and the final cause and circumstances of their deaths would be determined after the completion of medico-legal and forensic procedures. The recovery of the bodies sent shockwaves through the locality, particularly because a kidnapping case had been registered only a day earlier after the three females went missing. District Police Officer Gujrat Faisal Shehzad visited the scene following the recovery of the bodies. He was briefed by police officers and also gathered information from residents of the area about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The DPO directed the officers concerned to conduct a complete and transparent investigation and examine all possible aspects of the case. He said the legal and investigative process should be completed strictly on merit and no aspect of the incident should be overlooked. Faisal Shehzad also met the bereaved family members and expressed his condolences over the deaths. He assured them that police would complete all legal and investigative formalities in accordance with the law. Police officials said the post-mortem reports and forensic examination of evidence collected from the scene would play an important role in determining whether the deaths resulted solely from drowning or whether any other factor was involved. Investigators are also examining the timeline of the disappearance and other circumstances leading up to the recovery of the bodies from the pond. The Dinga police said further proceedings would be carried out in light of the post-mortem findings, forensic evidence and the results of the ongoing investigation. The bodies were handed over for further medico-legal procedures as police continued their investigation into what officials described as a tragic and sensitive case. No final conclusion regarding the circumstances of the deaths had been announced by police at the time of filing this report, while investigators continued to collect evidence and record statements from relevant persons.

North Korea warns US nuclear strategy could trigger arms race

PYONGYANG: North Korea has warned that a new nuclear strategy being considered by the United States could trigger a fresh global arms race and increase the risk of nuclear conflict. A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry criticised the proposed US nuclear policy and accused Washington of using nuclear weapons for strategic dominance and political and military objectives. The spokesperson described the reported US strategy as a serious and dangerous development. North Korea said the policy could undermine the existing nuclear balance and accelerate the development and deployment of nuclear weapons around the world. According to the North Korean statement, continued expansion of nuclear capabilities could push the international security environment closer to the threshold of nuclear war. However, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby said on Thursday that he did not expect any major or fundamental changes in the nuclear strategy currently under consideration. North Korea also criticised planned joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. It warned that it would exercise what it described as its right to self-defence in response to what it considers hostile military activities. A statement carried by North Korean state media said Pyongyang would not tolerate what it described as an increasingly confrontational situation created by hostile states. The United States and South Korea are scheduled to begin their joint military exercises on August 17. The drills are expected to continue until August 27. The exercises are also expected to take into account possible lessons from North Korea’s involvement in Russia’s war in Ukraine, particularly its military experience and battlefield capabilities. The latest warnings came after North Korea conducted its second missile test in less than a week. On Wednesday, Pyongyang launched a ballistic missile from its eastern coast towards the sea. Six days earlier, it had conducted another test involving a short-range missile. North Korea’s latest military activity comes amid continued tensions with Washington and Seoul. Diplomatic efforts to restart talks have so far failed to produce a breakthrough. According to reports, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has largely rejected recent calls for renewed diplomatic engagement with the United States and South Korea. Since the collapse of diplomatic efforts involving former US President Donald Trump in 2019, Kim has instead focused on strengthening North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Analysts believe Pyongyang could eventually use its expanding nuclear capabilities as leverage to seek concessions from Washington. These could include relief from international sanctions and other measures imposed on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programmes.

Houston Police shoot gunman after random road atta…

HOUSTON: Police in Houston shot and wounded an armed man after he allegedly opened fire at passing vehicles, injuring three people, including a mother and her daughter, US media reported. The incident unfolded on Saturday, with police receiving a report of the shooting at around 11am. Officers rushed to the scene after reports that an armed individual was firing at vehicles travelling along the road. According to police, officers ordered the man to drop his weapon when they arrived. The suspect allegedly failed to comply, prompting officers to open fire. Police said the man was struck by multiple rounds and was taken to hospital for treatment. His current condition and identity have not been released. No police officers were reported injured during the confrontation. Witnesses described a frightening scene in which the gunman stood in the middle section of the roadway and appeared to fire indiscriminately at vehicles passing by. One witness told local media that the shooter seemed unconcerned about which vehicles he was targeting and that some of the cars had children inside. Police said a mother and her daughter were among those wounded after they were shot while travelling in one vehicle. A third person in another vehicle was also injured. All three victims were transported to hospital. Authorities have not immediately released details about their conditions. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigators are working to establish what led to the attack and whether the suspect knew any of the victims. The incident has once again raised concerns about random gun violence in public places, particularly when busy roads and passing motorists become targets. Police have urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or has relevant information to cooperate with investigators as the inquiry continues. Authorities are expected to review witness accounts, surveillance footage and other evidence gathered from the scene as they work to reconstruct the sequence of events. Officials have not yet announced whether the suspect will face charges, with the investigation still underway.

Lebanon becomes first Middle Eastern country to abolish death penalty

Lebanon’s parliament has voted to abolish capital punishment, making it the first nation in the Middle East to formally end the practice. While Lebanon has maintained a de facto moratorium on executions since 2004, courts continued to hand down death sentences for major crimes including murder, terrorism, and espionage. Prior to the vote, human rights group Amnesty International estimated that 85 individuals remained on death row across the country. Under the new legislation, capital punishment will be replaced by life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour. Lebanese Justice Minister Adel Nassar described the vote as “historic”, noting that the legal existence of the death penalty had previously hampered Beirut’s ability to secure the extradition of criminal suspects from nations where capital punishment is outlawed. International observers and human rights organisations welcomed the landmark decision. The European Union stated that Lebanon was setting a powerful example for the region, while French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot praised the vote as a courageous step that upholds democratic values. Human Rights Watch also lauded the law, calling it a monumental victory for human rights in the Middle East.

Yemen’s Ansarullah movement claims attack on two Saudi oil tankers

Yemen’s Houthi-aligned Ansarullah movement has claimed responsibility for targeting two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, alleging that the vessels violated a newly declared naval blockade imposed by the group against Saudi Arabia. According to Saudi state media, a Saudi-owned tanker, identified as the Encelia, was struck while transiting the Red Sea, resulting in a fire at the vessel’s bow. Saudi authorities confirmed that the crew managed to contain the fire safely and that no casualties or environmental damage were reported. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and maritime security group Vanguard had earlier reported a missile strike on a tanker approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Al Shuqaiq, Saudi Arabia. The vessel’s captain reported that the fire was caused by an incoming projectile. The strike follows Ansarullah’s formal declaration of a naval blockade targeting vessels bound for or operating near Saudi ports. An Ansarullah spokesperson stated that the blockade was enacted in direct response to the siege on Yemen, specifically citing the ongoing closure of Sanaa International Airport, and warned that maritime restrictions would match those imposed on Yemeni airspace.

Tomi Adeyemi says film adaptation left her emotionally devastated

Author Tomi Adeyemi has shared an emotional account of her experience with the upcoming Children of Blood and Bone film adaptation, alleging that the production process had a significant impact on her mental and physical well-being. The 33-year-old writer took to Instagram to speak candidly about what she described as an extremely difficult period while the highly anticipated adaptation of her bestselling fantasy novel was being made. In the video, Adeyemi revealed that one of the most painful moments came after visiting the film’s set. She said the experience left her overwhelmed with emotion, claiming she was “hyperventilating and sobbing” after leaving the production. According to the author, several people witnessed the incident, making it something she says was known to others involved. Reflecting on that time, Adeyemi explained that the emotional distress did not end once she left the set. She said she returned to the United States struggling with severe anxiety, including panic attacks and physical symptoms that she believes were brought on by intense stress. The author described the experience as one of the most difficult chapters of her professional career, saying it remains the hardest situation she has ever had to face. While she did not go into detail about the specific circumstances that led to her reaction, she suggested that events surrounding the adaptation deeply affected her. Adeyemi also explained why she chose to speak publicly now. She said that as promotional efforts for the film continue, including the release of its first trailer, she felt it was important to share her side of the story. According to the author, she continues to experience challenges behind the scenes and believes that people should be aware of what she says happened during the adaptation process. She stated that the ongoing promotion of the film, combined with what she described as continued antagonism, convinced her that remaining silent was no longer the right decision. Adeyemi said she wanted the public to understand the reality of her experience rather than assume everything had gone smoothly. Despite making the emotional statement, the novelist emphasized that she does not want to continue discussing the project indefinitely. Instead, she expressed a desire to move forward and focus on the future, suggesting she hopes to leave the difficult chapter behind her. Children of Blood and Bone, based on Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel, has been one of the most anticipated literary adaptations in recent years. The book earned widespread acclaim following its release and developed a large global fan base, raising expectations for its transition to the big screen. Adeyemi’s comments have sparked widespread discussion online, with many readers and fans expressing concern over her account while awaiting further information. As of now, no additional details regarding the author’s allegations have been publicly addressed, and the film remains on track as promotional activities continue.
