Schools reopen across Sindh as summer vacation end…

KARACHI: Schools and colleges across Sindh, including Karachi, reopened on Friday after a two-month summer vacation, bringing students and teachers back to classrooms and restoring the familiar bustle of the academic year.

The reopening marks the end of the summer holidays that ran from June 1 to July 31 under the Sindh Education Department’s academic calendar. Along with the resumption of classes, educational institutions have also returned to a six-day working week, as the weekly Saturday holiday has officially been withdrawn from August 1.

Although academic activities resumed across the province, attendance on the first day remained lower than usual in many government and private schools. Several private institutions announced that they would begin regular classes from August 3, allowing additional time to complete administrative preparations before welcoming students.

Schools were filled with excitement as children arrived with their parents or in school vans after the long vacation. Teachers greeted students warmly and organized engaging classroom sessions, interactive learning exercises and science-based activities to help them settle back into the academic routine.

Many schools also used WhatsApp groups and email to inform parents about updated school timings, class schedules and other important guidelines for the new session. Education officials encouraged parents to ensure regular attendance as the academic calendar gets back on track.

The reopening of schools also had an immediate impact on city life. Morning traffic increased significantly across Karachi, with major roads witnessing the return of school transport, private vehicles and commuters during peak hours after weeks of relatively lighter traffic.

Education experts believe that the return to regular classroom learning will help students regain academic momentum following the extended summer break. Schools are expected to focus on completing course outlines on schedule while maintaining extracurricular and practical learning activities throughout the new term.

The Sindh Education Department had announced summer vacations from June 1 to July 31, with educational institutions officially resuming normal operations from August 1 under the revised weekly schedule.

Free entry announced for national champions cup in…

MULTAN: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced free entry for cricket fans attending the upcoming National Champions Cup, which is scheduled to take place from 11 to 18 August at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The PCB confirmed the decision through an official promotional flyer shared on its social media platforms. The move is expected to encourage cricket supporters to attend the matches and watch some of the country’s leading domestic players in action. The tournament will feature seven matches all of which will be played under day-night conditions. According to the schedule, the matches are expected to begin at around 3 pm local time. The National Champions Cup is a new 50-over List-A domestic competition and will also officially mark the beginning of Pakistan’s 2026-27 domestic cricket season. Four teams will participate in the tournament: Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold. The competition will follow a single-league round-robin format meaning each team will compete against the other participating sides during the league stage. At the conclusion of the league matches, the two teams with the highest points will qualify for the final, where they will compete for the tournament title. The PCB has also finalised the playing XIs for all four teams. In addition, a 13-player reserve pool has been selected for the competition. The reserve players will remain with their respective teams during training sessions and match days. According to the PCB’s arrangements, reserve players can be included in the playing XI if a team faces an injury or concussion-related replacement requirement after announcing its original XI. This arrangement is intended to ensure that teams have adequate cover throughout the competition. The tournament will feature several prominent Pakistan players as captains. Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead Pakistan Gold, while Shadab Khan has been appointed captain of Pakistan Greens. Saim Ayub will captain Pakistan Whites, whereas Sahibzada Farhan will lead Pakistan Blues. The Champions Cup is particularly important as the PCB continues its preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The board has selected a wider pool of 44 players along with reserve players, to provide opportunities for cricketers to demonstrate their abilities and strengthen their claims for future national selection. The domestic competition will therefore serve as an important platform for players seeking to establish themselves at the national level. Performances during the tournament could help the selectors assess the form, fitness and consistency of players ahead of future international assignments. With free admission, a strong line-up of players and the opening of the new domestic season, the National Champions Cup is expected to attract considerable interest from cricket fans in Multan and across Pakistan. The tournament will provide supporters with an opportunity to watch emerging and established players compete in a competitive 50-over format while the PCB continues its broader preparations for the next World Cup cycle.

The Arbaeen of Imam Hussain (AS) and the martyrs of Karbala was observed with deep reverence in Dallas, Texas, as hundreds of mourners gathered for religious congregations and a peaceful procession to commemorate the 40th day after Ashura. The main gathering was held at the Alam Centre, where religious scholar Maulana Qasim Zaidi spoke about the lasting significance of Karbala. He said the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) continues to inspire people around the world by promoting the values of justice, truth, courage and resistance against oppression. After the religious address, participants joined a central Arbaeen procession through downtown Dallas. Cesar Gastelum killed while livestreaming in Mexico

Mexican social media influencer Cesar Gastelum was shot and killed on Tuesday while livestreaming with friends outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacan, authorities confirmed. Gastelum, who had nearly 600,000 followers on TikTok, was widely recognized for his comedy content and interactive livestreams. His videos had earned him a loyal fan base across Mexico, making news of his death a shock to followers and fellow creators. According to officials, Gastelum was broadcasting live outside the restaurant when two individuals riding a motorcycle approached the group. Both suspects were reportedly wearing helmets, making it difficult to identify them. Footage from the livestream, which later circulated on social media, appeared to capture the terrifying moment when the motorcycle driver allegedly opened fire directly at Gastelum. The stream ended abruptly following the shooting, leaving viewers stunned. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Gastelum succumbed to his injuries. Local authorities confirmed his death and launched an extensive security operation to locate those responsible. Investigators have not yet announced any arrests, and the motive behind the attack remains under investigation. The fatal shooting occurred in Culiacan, the capital of the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa, a city that has experienced years of violence linked to organized crime. Authorities have repeatedly increased security efforts in the region as rival criminal groups continue to battle for influence and territorial control, contributing to ongoing instability. Gastelum’s death has renewed concerns over the safety of public figures and content creators in Mexico, particularly those who frequently livestream their daily activities and disclose their locations in real time. Social media users expressed grief over the incident, with many paying tribute to the influencer and calling for justice. The tragedy also draws comparisons to the killing of Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, who was shot during a TikTok livestream in May 2025 while working at a beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. Márquez was 23 years old at the time of her death, and prosecutors handled the investigation under Mexico’s femicide protocols. In a later development, Mexican authorities announced the arrest of Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” in the state of Jalisco. Officials identified him as the alleged leader of a criminal group associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities have accused Alvarez Ayala of ordering and financing the killing of Valeria Márquez. He has also been linked to the November 2025 murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, according to investigators. As the investigation into Cesar Gastelum’s killing continues, authorities are working to determine whether the attack was connected to organized crime or stemmed from another motive. His death has once again highlighted the dangers posed by violence in parts of Mexico and the growing risks faced by online personalities whose lives are increasingly shared with the public in real time.
