ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the implementation of a modern digital monitoring system in Pakistan’s oil and gas sector, aiming to eliminate profiteering, hoarding and improve transparency across the energy supply chain.

The directive came during a meeting in Islamabad where the prime minister met a delegation led by the World Bank’s country director. The delegation presented a set of policy recommendations focused on strengthening governance, improving regulatory oversight and enhancing efficiency in the country’s energy sector.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz instructed the relevant authorities to establish a committee to review the World Bank’s recommendations and submit practical proposals for implementation. The committee is expected to evaluate the report and identify reforms that could modernize the sector while protecting consumers.

The prime minister also issued specific instructions to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to introduce an advanced digital system capable of monitoring the movement, storage and distribution of petroleum products. The initiative is intended to increase transparency, curb illegal practices and prevent artificial shortages caused by hoarding.

Officials said the digital platform is expected to strengthen regulatory oversight by enabling authorities to monitor supply chains in real time, making it more difficult for unscrupulous elements to manipulate fuel availability or earn unlawful profits through price distortions.

The government believes greater digital integration will improve accountability, ensure a more reliable supply of petroleum products and build public confidence in the country’s energy market. Officials also hope the move will support broader economic reforms by promoting fair competition and reducing opportunities for market abuse.

The meeting reflects the government’s continued focus on improving governance in key economic sectors through technology-driven reforms. Energy experts say stronger digital oversight could help streamline operations, enhance regulatory compliance and provide consumers with greater protection against unfair pricing and supply disruptions.

The government is expected to announce further details regarding the implementation timeline after the review committee completes its assessment of the World Bank’s recommendations.

    KARACHI: Selling pressure intensified at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Tuesday as investor sentiment weakened amid growing uncertainty over the prospects of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran and the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The benchmark KSE-100 Index came under pressure during the trading session, losing more than 1,300 points as investors remained cautious and reduced exposure to major stocks across several sectors. At around 2pm, the KSE-100 Index stood at 179,996.62 points, showing a decline of 1,313.66 points, or 0.72%, from the previous close. The market witnessed broad-based selling, with several major sectors contributing to the decline. Automobile assemblers, cement companies, commercial banks, fertiliser manufacturers, oil and gas exploration firms and oil marketing companies (OMCs) remained under pressure. Several index-heavy stocks also traded in negative territory. Prominent companies including HUBCO, Mari Petroleum (MARI), Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), MCB Bank, Meezan Bank (MEBL) and United Bank Limited (UBL) were among the stocks weighing on the benchmark index. On Monday, the PSX initially moved higher but lost momentum during the second half of the session as investors opted to book profits in heavyweight shares. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, and prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway could have significant consequences for crude oil supplies and global energy prices. Oil prices climb to highest level since July 31 The uncertainty surrounding the situation was reflected in international oil markets. Brent crude futures climbed to around $88 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose to approximately $82.45 per barrel. Both benchmarks reached their highest levels since July 31 after recording gains of roughly 5% during Monday’s trading session. Higher oil prices are a major concern for economies that depend heavily on imported energy. For Pakistan, sustained increases in global crude prices could increase the country’s import bill and place additional pressure on external accounts, inflation and domestic fuel prices. The rise in energy prices is also being closely watched by investors because higher input costs can affect corporate profitability and influence monetary policy expectations. Asian markets remain cautious The uncertainty was not limited to Pakistan. Asian equity markets moved within a narrow range as investors assessed the potential impact of rising energy prices on inflation and economic growth. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan moved between gains and losses before trading modestly higher. South Korea’s Kospi also recorded a slight increase. However, the escalation in tensions around the Gulf kept overall market sentiment fragile, with investors remaining wary of further developments that could affect energy supplies and global trade. US stock futures were also slightly positive on Tuesday. Nasdaq futures rose around 0.28%, while S&P 500 futures gained approximately 0.1%, following a weaker session on Wall Street on Monday. Inflation data in focus Investors are also awaiting the latest US consumer price data, which could provide further clues about the direction of interest rates and inflationary pressures in the world’s largest economy. The increase in crude oil prices has added another element of uncertainty ahead of the inflation report. A sustained rise in fuel and energy costs could complicate efforts to bring inflation closer to central-bank targets. For Pakistani investors, the combination of geopolitical uncertainty, higher global oil prices and pressure on heavyweight shares is likely to remain a key factor influencing trading sentiment in the near term.

On August 7, the three countries signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, a trilateral framework aimed at strengthening collective deterrence, expanding military cooperation and supporting regional stability. The agreement builds on the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia last year, under which aggression against either country is to be regarded as aggression against both.     Russia calls for immediate end to Yemen blockade

    UNITED NATIONS: Russia has called for the immediate and complete lifting of the maritime and land blockade imposed on Yemen, urging an end to restrictions on the delivery of food, medicines and other essential supplies. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, Russian representative Yulia Zhdanova blamed the United States and Israel for contributing to the growing tensions surrounding Yemen, according to Arab media reports. Zhdanova said restrictions affecting the movement of humanitarian supplies should be removed to prevent further suffering among Yemen’s population. She stressed that civilians should not bear the consequences of the wider regional conflict. The Russian diplomat also argued that the prolonged deadlock in Yemen’s peace process had created conditions in which the Houthis became increasingly drawn into the regional confrontation. Moscow urged the immediate resumption of peace negotiations, saying there was no lasting military solution to the conflict. Zhdanova said a political settlement could only be achieved through dialogue involving Yemen’s key political forces. She called for the legitimate interests of all major stakeholders, including the Houthis, to be taken into account during negotiations. Russia’s appeal comes as Yemen remains caught in a wider regional crisis, with concerns growing over humanitarian access and the disruption of essential supplies. Moscow said renewed diplomacy and an inclusive political process were necessary to move Yemen towards lasting peace and reduce the risk of further escalation.

    Militant facilitator Mufti Zafaryab arrested

    Authorities have arrested self-styled cleric Mufti Zafaryab for allegedly facilitating the banned militant group referred to by the Pakistani government as Fitna al-Khawarij. According to an official statement, the suspect said he completed an eight-year Dars-e-Nizami course at Jamia Nizam-ul-Uloom, Yateem Khana, Bannu, and later completed a three-year specialization in Islamic jurisprudence (Takhassus fi al-Fiqh) at Al-Markaz Al-Islami, Ghoriwala. In a recorded statement, Zafaryab admitted that he had been in contact with militant commander Hikmat Roshan. He said state institutions were aware of his links, which ultimately led to his arrest. The suspect alleged that the militant commander sought religious rulings from him to justify extortion carried out in the name of jihad. He further claimed that he, along with several others, had been offered positions and financial incentives by the group. Expressing remorse, Zafaryab said he regretted his actions and stated that the group has no connection with Islam. He described its activities and ideology as un-Islamic and contrary to Sharia. He also said the militant group promotes extremist beliefs and considers the killing of Muslims to be permissible, rejecting its ideology and distancing himself from its actions. The arrest comes as security forces continue counterterrorism operations against militant groups across the country.
