A police constable was martyred and two suspected robbers were shot dead during an exchange of fire in Karachi’s Orangi Town early on Tuesday morning, according to police and rescue services officials.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP) of District West, Tariq Illahi Mastoi, said that four police officials of District West were conducting routine motorcycle patrolling near Liaquat Chowk, within the limits of Pakistan Bazaar Police Station, when they encountered armed robbers. Upon seeing the police party, the suspects opened indiscriminate fire. The police retaliated in self-defence, resulting in an exchange of fire, he said.

The SSP added that both armed suspects were killed during the exchange of fire. Two pistols along with ammunition, spent shell casings, and the motorcycle being used by the suspects were recovered from their possession. According to a police statement, there were “at least 13 criminal cases” registered against one suspect, while one case had been registered against the other.

The incident comes amid a recent surge in violent crime in the port city. Last week, a suspected robber was gunned down and a policeman was wounded in a shoot-out on Mauripur Road. Earlier this month, two suspected robbers were shot dead by citizens in Gulzar-i-Hijri and Cattle Colony. In another incident, a suspected robber was lynched by an angry mob and another was wounded by a bullet allegedly fired by an accomplice during a robbery in Korangi.

Police have reiterated their commitment to combating criminal activity in the city, while the latest encounter underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in maintaining public safety amid rising street crime.

    Goods transporters have announced a 40-day postponement of their nationwide strike following talks with government representatives in Karachi. The negotiations were held at the Governor House in Karachi. Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan and All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association President Malik Shahzad attended the meeting. Speaking at a press conference after the talks, Malik Shahzad said transporters had decided to postpone the strike after receiving assurances from the government. He said the transporters had been on a nationwide strike for the past nine days. According to him, the Sindh government assured them that the parking issue would be addressed. Shahzad said the government had also sought 15 days to review the mechanism for determining petroleum prices. The issue of whether fuel prices should be revised every 15 days or once a month would be examined, he added. He said Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan had assured the transporters that a committee would be formed to review toll taxes and consider reducing the charges. The transporters were also assured that 10-wheeler vehicles would be allowed to carry an appropriate weight, Shahzad said. He added that the federal and provincial governments had already resolved some of their concerns. Other issues require decisions at the cabinet level, he said. Shahzad said meetings of the relevant committees would continue. He expressed hope that the government would fulfil its commitments. He clarified that the transporters were not ending their strike permanently. Instead, they were postponing it for 40 days. He warned that the transporters could resume protests if the government failed to implement the assurances given during the negotiations. Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said the government had addressed the transporters’ issues that could be resolved immediately.     The Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) 2026 in Sindh will be held on Sunday, August 16, under the supervision of Sukkur IBA Testing Services (SIBA Testing Services). According to SIBA Testing Services, examination centres have been established in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Larkana, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad and Islamabad to facilitate candidates. In Karachi, the test will be conducted at NED University of Engineering and Technology, while candidates in Hyderabad will appear at Public School Latifabad. The examination will also take place at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences in Jamshoro, Mir Sher Muhammad Talpur Public School in Mirpurkhas, Police Training School Ground on Wagon Road in Larkana, Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology in Shaheed Benazirabad, and IBA Public School on Old Airport Road in Sukkur. Candidates from Sindh who have relocated to Islamabad will take the test at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) test centre. SIBA Testing Services said the examination will last three hours. Candidates have been instructed to arrive at their designated centres on time, and no one will be allowed to leave the examination hall before the test concludes. The testing authority added that separate waiting areas will be arranged for parents at all examination centres. Essential stationery and drinking water will also be provided to candidates inside the examination halls.
