Bangladesh hints at joining Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiy…

DHAKA: Bangladesh has signalled that it could consider joining the emerging economic or defence framework involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, opening a potentially significant new chapter in regional diplomacy and security cooperation.

Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir said Dhaka was taking a positive view of the possibility of becoming part of a framework involving the three countries. His comments come only weeks after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.

The agreement, signed in Makkah on Aug 7, commits the three countries to strengthening collective security and defence cooperation. It also states that an armed attack against any one of the three signatories would be regarded as an attack against all three.

Kabir, speaking to Bangladesh’s state news agency, indicated that Dhaka would examine the idea through the lens of its own national interests and the rapidly changing global economic and trade environment.

“The government is following a Bangladesh First policy,” Kabir said, according to reports, stressing that national interests remain at the centre of Dhaka’s foreign policy.

The remarks are particularly noteworthy because Bangladesh has recently been working to strengthen practical ties with Pakistan. Kabir said the two countries were seeking greater cooperation in trade and people-to-people contacts, suggesting that economic engagement could form an important part of the relationship.

For Pakistan, Bangladesh’s interest could give the Makkah framework a wider South Asian dimension. For Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, Dhaka’s possible participation could also expand the reach of an arrangement that the signatories have described as defensive rather than directed against any particular country.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the agreement is open to other friendly countries seeking peace, prosperity and stability in the region. Turkish officials have also stressed that the pact does not identify a common enemy and is intended to strengthen defence cooperation and collective deterrence.

Bangladesh’s possible move comes as Dhaka is also deepening its relationship with Saudi Arabia. Kabir said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit Saudi Arabia following an invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The visit could provide an opportunity for discussions on economic cooperation, regional security and Bangladesh’s possible role in broader regional frameworks.

For now, Dhaka has not announced any formal decision to join the defence agreement. But its positive signal is already attracting attention, particularly because Bangladesh’s participation could reshape the strategic picture across South Asia and the wider Muslim world.

The next step will likely depend on how Dhaka assesses the proposed framework against its national interests, economic priorities and wider foreign-policy objectives.

Six policemen among 15 martyred in Swat suicide bl…

At least 15 people, including six police personnel, were killed in a suicide bombing near Kabal Police Station in Swat on Sunday, according to local administration and police officials. Authorities said the attacker attempted to enter the police station but was intercepted by security personnel stationed at the entrance. After failing to gain access, the suicide bomber detonated the explosives near the main gate, triggering a powerful explosion that caused multiple casualties. The blast occurred near Kabal Chowk, where a protest by local youths was also taking place at the time. The explosion spread panic throughout the area, with emergency teams and security forces rushing to the scene to launch rescue and relief operations. Police officials said several people sustained injuries in the attack and were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities fear the number of casualties could rise as some of the injured remain in critical condition. During the search operation, investigators recovered human remains from the blast site, including a severed head believed to belong to the suicide bomber. Forensic experts have collected evidence to help identify the attacker and determine the nature of the explosives used. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a comprehensive search operation to ensure no further threats remained. Bomb disposal teams also inspected the site while investigators gathered evidence for the ongoing inquiry. Officials said the timely action of police personnel prevented the attacker from entering the police station, a move they believe avoided even greater loss of life and damage. The attack has once again highlighted the security challenges facing law enforcement agencies, which continue to remain on high alert amid renewed militant violence in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Five dead, 41 missing after Indonesia ferry catches fire

At least five people have died and 41 others remain missing after a passenger ferry caught fire while sailing off Indonesia’s Madura Island, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation. According to Indonesian authorities, the ferry was carrying at least 250 passengers and crew when the blaze erupted during its voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi. The captain alerted rescue authorities after the fire broke out early in the morning. Within hours, emergency teams launched a major operation involving rescue vessels and other maritime agencies to evacuate passengers from the burning ship. Officials said the fire rapidly spread across the ferry, leaving much of the vessel engulfed in flames. Many passengers gathered at the bow and bridge while waiting for help, while others were forced to jump into the sea to escape the intense heat and thick smoke. Videos circulating on local media showed heavy black smoke rising from the ferry as passengers wearing life jackets crowded onto lifeboats. Other footage captured desperate scenes of people entering the water as rescue teams threw lifebuoys and pulled survivors aboard nearby vessels. Search and rescue teams have so far recovered five bodies and rescued a large number of passengers. However, 41 people are still unaccounted for, and the operation continues with authorities searching the surrounding waters. Officials said emergency crews responded immediately after receiving the distress call and continue to coordinate efforts to locate the missing. Medical teams are also providing treatment to survivors rescued from the sea. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Maritime authorities have launched an investigation to establish how the blaze started and whether any safety violations contributed to the incident. Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, depends heavily on ferry transport for inter-island travel.

‘Rigging mastermind cries foul’: Maryam’s sh…

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has strongly criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over its allegations of rigging in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. Maryam responded to criticism from PPP leaders in a social media post on Wednesday. She accused the PPP of being behind what she described as “subtle rigging” and questioned its decision to complain about electoral irregularities. “The mastermind of subtle rigging is crying foul over rigging,” Maryam said in her post. She then added a sarcastic question about when doomsday would arrive. Her remarks came after PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Hassan Murtaza accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of manipulating the AJK election process. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Murtaza alleged that electoral rules had been repeatedly violated during the polls. He also criticised the role of the Election Commission. He claimed that the commission had acted like an election agent instead of performing its constitutional responsibilities. Murtaza accused the PML-N of setting a new example of electoral rigging. He said his party had been treated unfairly during the elections. The PPP leader also criticised the political activities of the PML-N leadership in AJK. Without directly naming Maryam Nawaz, Murtaza referred to her father, Nawaz Sharif. He said Sharif had gone to Kashmir and expressed a desire to become prime minister. Murtaza argued that if the PML-N leadership was now seeking the AJK premiership, it was only possible because of the PPP’s political role. He also defended Nawaz Sharif and said the PPP respected the former prime minister. Murtaza claimed that the PML-N had itself reduced Sharif’s political standing by offering him a position as chairman of an institution in Lahore while he was seeking the AJK premiership. The PPP leader then shifted his criticism to Punjab’s governance and public services. He claimed that thousands of acres of farmland between Shahdara and Muridke had been inundated. According to Murtaza, water had reached several feet in some agricultural areas. He said the damage was not caused by a major flood. Instead, he blamed a breach in a drain embankment. Murtaza also criticised the Punjab government’s claims about Lahore’s development. He argued that the city’s infrastructure remained vulnerable to heavy rainfall. He said several roads turned into what he described as drainage channels after only a few hours of rain. The PPP leader blamed government decisions for creating difficulties for citizens. He also criticised the import of one million metric tonnes of wheat. Murtaza claimed that the imported wheat was worth around Rs1 trillion. He questioned the government’s economic decisions and argued that citizens deserved better public services. He said taxes collected from the public should be used to provide essential facilities. He also called on the government to fulfil its responsibility toward citizens. The political dispute comes amid growing tensions between the PPP and PML-N over the AJK elections. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has also alleged irregularities in the first phase of the AJK elections. The PML-N, however, has rejected allegations of rigging and defended the election results. Maryam Nawaz has previously urged political opponents to accept defeat rather than make allegations of electoral manipulation

Iranian strike hits Chinese company building in Ku…

KUWAIT CITY: A building belonging to a Chinese company in northern Kuwait was struck during an alleged Iranian attack, leaving one worker dead and causing extensive structural damage, according to Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense. The ministry confirmed the incident in an official statement on Wednesday, saying emergency response teams and security agencies were immediately dispatched to the affected site to secure the area, assess the damage, and launch rescue operations. Authorities said one worker was killed in the strike, but did not immediately disclose the victim’s identity or nationality. Officials added that investigations are continuing to determine whether there were additional casualties or injuries and to establish the full extent of the damage caused by the attack. Images from the scene showed emergency personnel working around the damaged building as security forces cordoned off the area. Officials have yet to release further details regarding the type of weapon used or the circumstances surrounding the strike. In its statement, Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense stressed that the country’s armed forces remain on high alert and are fully prepared to safeguard Kuwait’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security against any external threat. The ministry also urged the public to rely only on official government statements for updates, warning citizens against spreading or believing unverified reports and rumors circulating on social media. The attack comes amid heightened regional tensions linked to the ongoing confrontation between Iran and the United States, which has fueled growing security concerns across the Gulf region. In recent weeks, military facilities, energy infrastructure, commercial shipping routes, and strategic installations have increasingly come under threat, raising fears of a wider regional escalation. Security analysts say the latest strike demonstrates how the conflict is expanding beyond its primary actors, with neighboring Gulf states facing increasing risks from the deteriorating security environment. Kuwait, which has traditionally sought to maintain balanced regional relations, now finds itself confronting the possibility of being directly affected by the broader conflict. The incident is expected to intensify security measures across the country, particularly around critical infrastructure, industrial facilities, and foreign-owned commercial sites. Regional governments have already strengthened surveillance and emergency preparedness in response to the growing threat of cross-border attacks. No immediate statement was issued by Iranian authorities regarding the alleged strike. Meanwhile, Kuwaiti officials said investigations remain underway and pledged to provide further information as more details become available. The latest incident underscores the widening regional impact of the Iran-US confrontation and highlights growing concerns that escalating hostilities could increasingly affect civilian infrastructure and foreign businesses operating across the Gulf.
