Customs seize $55,000 from Dubai-bound family

KARACHI: Customs authorities have recovered a large amount of foreign currency from six passengers travelling from Karachi to Dubai.

According to officials, the passengers belonged to the same family. Authorities recovered $55,000 in US currency and Rs950,000 in Pakistani cash from them.

Officials said the passengers were carrying foreign currency above the limit permitted by the State Bank of Pakistan. The currency had also not been properly declared before their travel.

The authorities took action under the Customs Act 1969 after the undeclared currency was discovered.

Customs officials said the case involved six members of one family. The recovery was made during checks at the airport before the passengers could leave the country.

Officials said the passengers had exceeded the permissible limit for carrying foreign currency abroad. They also failed to meet the required declaration procedures.

Customs authorities stressed that travellers must comply with regulations governing the movement of foreign currency. Passengers carrying amounts above the permitted limits are required to follow the applicable declaration procedures.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of checks at international airports. Customs officials regularly monitor passengers and baggage to detect undeclared currency and other restricted items.

Authorities said preventing currency smuggling remains a priority. They are maintaining strict checks to identify attempts to move large amounts of undeclared foreign currency out of Pakistan.

Customs officials said they are following a zero-tolerance policy against currency smuggling. They added that action would be taken against anyone found violating the relevant laws.

The recovered amount included both US dollars and Pakistani rupees. The officials did not provide further details about the intended use of the money or the identities of the passengers.

The case also highlights the need for travellers to understand currency rules before leaving Pakistan. Failure to declare currency or carrying amounts beyond the permitted limits can lead to legal action under the applicable laws.

Authorities are continuing proceedings in the case under the Customs Act 1969.

During the hearing, the prosecution informed the court that interim challans for nominated accused Arshad Aqib, Mahboobur Rehman, Kamran and Khalid Jan had not yet reached the court. According to the prosecution, the accused participated in a protest near Family Park on GT Road on May 9. The protesters allegedly damaged government and private property during the demonstration, while around 10 police personnel sustained injuries. The prosecution said authorities had nominated several people, including Provincial Minister Meena Khan Afridi, in the case registered over the protest.The court adjourned the hearing until September 10.

    Two tribal elders killed in South Waziristan

    Two tribal elders were shot dead by unidentified armed men in the Zarmilan area of Toi Khulla tehsil in Lower South Waziristan on Sunday, according to police District Police Officer (DPO) Shah Hassan identified the victims as Haji Gul and Malik Badshah, both members of the Suleman Khel tribe. Police said the two elders were travelling from Gul Kach towards Zarmilan when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle near Darozanda. Both men sustained multiple bullet wounds and died at the scene, while the attackers escaped. Police registered a preliminary case at Toi Khulla police station and launched an investigation. DPO Hassan said officers were examining all possible aspects of the incident and working to identify and arrest the suspects. The killings come amid growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Lower South Waziristan. The district has witnessed a rise in targeted killings, bomb attacks, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and attacks on police and security personnel over the past 18 months. Tribal elders and their relatives have increasingly become targets of violence. The trend has raised concerns about the safety of influential tribal figures, who have traditionally helped resolve disputes and maintain peace through jirgas and other local mechanisms. In May, prominent tribal elder and chief of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe, Malik Tariq Wazir, was among three people killed in an IED blast near Gulshan Plaza in Wana’s busy Rustam Bazaar. Four others suffered injuries in the explosion. Police said explosives had allegedly been planted near the plaza overnight and detonated in the morning as Malik Tariq passed through the market in a vehicle. He was considered an influential figure who played an active role in tribal jirgas and local dispute resolution. He had also been abducted by armed men in December 2024 but was later released following efforts by tribal elders and local mediators. In another incident in June 2026, unidentified gunmen killed two sons of prominent tribal elder Malik Jamil Wazir near Kari Kot Bazaar in Wana tehsil. The brothers were identified as Naveed Wazir and Moeenuddin Wazir.

    Spain tightens Italy border checks amid migration dispute

    Spain has resumed border checks on travellers arriving from Italy amid a growing disagreement between the two European countries over irregular migration. Officials said Spanish and other European Union citizens would not be affected by the measures, which focus mainly on non-EU nationals travelling from Spain by air or sea. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Rome hoped to remove the restrictions as soon as the perceived security risk had eased. The latest developments have raised concerns about tensions within the European Union’s passport-free travel system. The Schengen Area allows people to move across 29 European countries without routine internal border checks, although individual member states can temporarily restore controls in response to security threats, public-order concerns or exceptional circumstances.
