PPP rejects Sindh division, calls province ‘red …

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has firmly rejected any proposal to divide Sindh into administrative units, with Sindh government spokesperson Saadia Javed declaring that the province remains a “red line” for the party.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Javed said the PPP has never supported the division of Sindh and has no intention of doing so in the future. She argued that Pakistan’s current economic challenges and rising inflation make the creation of additional administrative units impractical, questioning how the government would finance such a move.

Criticising the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), she described the demand for new administrative units as a political stunt. Javed questioned the performance of senior MQM leaders, including Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, asking what concrete steps they had taken to address the concerns of their voters or improve education and public services.

She reiterated that Karachi is the capital of Sindh and stressed that any attempt to divide the province is unacceptable to the PPP. According to Javed, while some people in Punjab may favour the creation of additional administrative units, the people of Sindh do not share that view.

Addressing Karachi’s civic challenges, she acknowledged that infrastructure development is underway but admitted that progress has not been as fast as residents expect. Referring to ongoing construction on University Road, she recognised the inconvenience faced by commuters and residents. She also shared her own experience, saying that despite living in Defence for four decades, her home still does not receive a regular water supply.

Javed said the provincial government is working to resolve Karachi’s longstanding issues and insisted that all of the city’s problems should not be blamed solely on the current administration. She expressed confidence that visible improvements in Karachi would emerge by the end of the year.

On the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project, the spokesperson said work is progressing at a rapid pace, adding that the deadline for completing the mixed-lane track has been set for July 31.

Diplomatic storm erupts over podcast banter involving Japanese prime minister

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing intense political backlash after a podcast appearance triggered a high-profile diplomatic row with Tokyo. The controversy stems from an episode, recorded in July, in which Albanese discussed a pair of prized crown melons presented to him during a May bilateral meeting by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. During the segment, podcast host Nikki Osborne made an explicit joke comparing the fruit to female anatomy, to which Albanese responded with agreement. The exchange went largely unnoticed upon release but reignited publicly after Shingo Yamagami, Japan’s former ambassador to Australia, published a scathing opinion piece accusing the Australian leader of casually mocking a key strategic ally. Yamagami described the remarks as a sexist insult that betrayed the close diplomatic bond between the two nations, noting that crown melons are highly valued cultural gifts in Japan, often worth upwards of 30,000 yen (£150) each. Opposition leaders in Canberra immediately seized on the commentary, demanding an official apology from Albanese for what they termed “classless” and disrespectful conduct. Albanese rejected calls to apologise in parliament, insisting that the partnership between Australia and Japan remains as strong as ever and pointing out that the joke was initiated by the host rather than himself. Senior Labor Party ministers also defended the prime minister, arguing that the comments were taken out of context by political opponents and former diplomats. The episode marks the second time Albanese has faced criticism over his appearance on the show, following a prior apology for crude remarks regarding pop star Kylie Minogue.

Shein posts $99m loss ahead of Hong Kong IPO

Online fashion retailer Shein has reported a $99 million loss for the first quarter of 2026, highlighting the growing impact of higher import costs, weaker US sales and increased regulatory pressure. The company had recorded a $395 million profit during the same period a year earlier. Its latest financial disclosure comes as Shein prepares for a planned listing in Hong Kong. The company has not yet revealed the size of the initial public offering, expected share price, listing date or the amount it hopes to raise. However, the filing provides investors with a clearer picture of the challenges facing the fast-fashion giant ahead of its potential market debut. A major factor behind the weaker performance is the removal of a US duty exemption for low-value packages. The previous system allowed goods worth less than $800 to enter the country without import duties. Shein said the change has negatively affected its US sales and overall growth while increasing operating expenses. Products of Chinese origin sold through the company and shipped to the US are now subject to taxes ranging from 10% to 87.5%, according to the filing. The company said it is considering several measures to manage the higher costs, including raising prices for American customers. Shein’s US revenue fell 14.3% to $2.04 billion in the first quarter, compared with $2.38 billion a year earlier. The US remains one of its most important markets, although its contribution to total revenue has declined. The company is also facing additional pressure in Europe. The European Union has introduced a €3 charge on low-value e-commerce imports, a move aimed at addressing concerns over competition from low-cost overseas sellers. Shein warned that the European market could experience an impact similar to, or greater than, the one seen in the US following the removal of the duty exemption. The retailer’s financial performance had already weakened in 2025. Its annual revenue increased by 8% to $41.85 billion, but net income dropped nearly 39% to $2.06 billion. Growth also slowed significantly compared with the previous year. Part of the latest quarterly loss was linked to a $328 million accounting charge related to the changing value of convertible preferred shares held by investors. Shein has also faced growing scrutiny over labour practices, environmental concerns and the impact of its business model. The company has defended its policies and said it maintains strict standards against labour abuses within its supply chain. Shein received approval from Chinese regulators for its Hong Kong listing in July, clearing an important hurdle after earlier efforts to pursue listings in New York and London did not materialise.

Jasprit Bumrah sidelined for Sri Lanka Tests over knee concern

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. According to reports, the BCCI’s medical team advised him to take extra time to recover from a left knee issue. Bumrah will not travel with the squad for the series, which begins on August 15 in Galle. The decision reflects India’s cautious approach, as the team looks to avoid rushing its premier fast bowler back too soon. So far, the BCCI has not named a replacement for the 31-year-old. Bumrah last bowled during the second ODI against England in Cardiff on July 16. He was ruled out of the series finale at Lord’s shortly after, following an impact injury sustained while fielding. At the time, the BCCI cited that injury as the reason for his absence. Following the England series, Bumrah received an injection for his knee as part of a recovery plan designed by the BCCI medical staff. He then travelled to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for a round of fitness testing. Reports suggest the medical team feared that a premature return to bowling could risk a much longer setback, with concerns that the injury might worsen without proper rest. While the exact nature of Bumrah’s injury remains undisclosed, he has been closely monitored since recovering from a lengthy layoff last year. He had also visited the Centre of Excellence in March for conditioning work ahead of the IPL season. During that tournament, Bumrah featured in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians, sitting out only their final fixture. His workload has continued to be managed carefully, given his ongoing injury history. India’s bowling attack has faced several setbacks ahead of the tour. Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are both sidelined with hamstring and quadriceps injuries respectively. Washington Sundar has also been ruled out of the first Test due to a hamstring issue, while Akash Deep remains unavailable as he continues recovering from stress reactions in his back. Speaking after India’s ODI series loss in England, captain Shubman Gill raised concerns over the team’s repeated injury troubles. He warned that these frequent absences could become a significant challenge as India heads toward the demanding 2027 World Cup cycle. Ahead of the Test series, India will play a three-day practice match in Colombo starting August 7. The tour marks India’s first assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle, following a 2-0 home series defeat to South Africa last November.

Fatima Zehra says better facilities could have earned gold

Pakistan’s trailblazing boxer Fatima Zehra believes she had the potential to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games if she had access to the same level of training facilities and international exposure as many of her competitors. The 22-year-old made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win a boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games after claiming bronze in the women’s 60kg category. Although she narrowly missed out on a place in the final, Fatima described the achievement as a proud moment for herself and for Pakistan. Reflecting on her campaign, Fatima said her main objective before the tournament was to secure a medal, while also hoping to progress to the final. She admitted that the competition was extremely challenging, with many of her opponents benefiting from extensive international training and experience. Her journey ended in the semi-finals, where she faced Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh. Fatima acknowledged that her opponent’s speed and international experience proved decisive, making it difficult to overcome the challenge. Despite the defeat, she expressed satisfaction with her bronze medal, saying it was earned against some of the strongest boxers in the competition. She also noted that competing at such a high level allowed her to gain valuable experience by observing other elite athletes and learning from every bout. Fatima highlighted the gap between Pakistan’s sporting infrastructure and that of leading boxing nations. She pointed out that several countries, including regional rivals, organized overseas training camps in the United States before the Games, while Pakistan’s preparations took place entirely at home. According to Fatima, world-class coaching facilities, modern training environments, and regular international competition are essential if Pakistani athletes are to consistently challenge for top honors on the global stage. She believes greater government investment in sports development would significantly improve the country’s chances of success. The young boxer also acknowledged the role played by the Pakistan Army, the Pakistan Boxing Federation, and her coach, Raheel Adnan, crediting them for their guidance and support throughout her preparation. She said their encouragement was instrumental in helping her achieve the historic milestone. Looking ahead, Fatima has already shifted her focus to the upcoming Asian Games, which are scheduled to take place in Japan in September. She hopes the experience gained at the Commonwealth Games will strengthen her performances against Asia’s top competitors. Fatima previously won a bronze medal at the 2025 Islamic Games in Saudi Arabia, and she is determined to build on that success by aiming for an even stronger finish at the Asian Games. Her boxing journey has not been without challenges. She revealed that although boxing now runs in her family, her parents initially opposed her decision to pursue the sport. After competing at the Punjab level, she was forced to step away from boxing because of her family’s concerns. However, her coach Raheel Adnan convinced them to give her another opportunity, a decision that ultimately changed her career. Today, her family fully supports her ambitions, and her two sisters, Dua and Aiman, along with her younger brother Naday Ali, have also taken up boxing. Fatima secured her historic Commonwealth Games bronze after defeating New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the quarter-finals. Under tournament rules, both losing semi-finalists were awarded bronze medals, marking a landmark achievement for women’s boxing in Pakistan.

Speaking during the premiere, Zendaya explained that working with Holland has always felt comfortable because their bond extends far beyond the movie set. According to the actress, years of friendship, trust and shared experiences have helped them develop a natural rhythm whenever they collaborate on a project. “It’s easy because we’re best friends,” Zendaya said, adding that their familiarity allows them to support each other throughout filming. Rather than creating distractions, their personal relationship has strengthened their ability to work as professional co-stars. She noted that both she and Holland understand the pressures that come with leading major film franchises, making it easier to support each other through demanding schedules, long filming days and worldwide promotional tours. Fans have often praised their relationship for its authenticity and mutual encouragement. As excitement builds for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Zendaya’s comments offer a glimpse into the partnership that has captivated audiences around the world. While their romance continues to attract public attention, the actress made it clear that their enduring friendship remains the true foundation of both their marriage and their successful collaboration on screen.

Selena Gomez gets candid on ‘Rare Beginnings’ and being too hard on herself

Selena Gomez has a brand new fragrance on the way. Ahead of its launch, she sat down for a candid conversation. The chat centred on the thinking behind the project and how it connects to her personal life. Gomez has been a familiar face in entertainment for years. She first won hearts as a child star on Barney and Friends. She later became a household name through Wizards of Waverly Place. Today, she is in a very different phase of her life. She now has a husband by her side. She also has a new fragrance hitting shelves soon. To mark the occasion, Gomez joined host Robin James on his YouTube channel for an in-depth chat. Their conversation revolved around the perfume’s title, Rare Beginnings. James asked Gomez to reflect on what the name meant to her. He then asked what she would want to remember about this particular period, years from now, whenever she looks back on this fragrance. Gomez gave a thoughtful response. She said she hopes to always remember that there is room to try again, no matter the circumstances. She admitted this is something she’s still working on. The conversation gave fans a rare glimpse into a more reflective, vulnerable side of the star. It is a side that often gets overshadowed by the glitz of red carpets, music releases, and public appearances. With Rare Beginnings set to arrive soon, the launch appears to carry personal weight for Gomez. It isn’t just another business venture for the star. This latest conversation adds another layer to that ongoing, honest dialogue. Fans have often praised her for being upfront about her mental and emotional journey, rather than keeping up a purely polished public image. As she steps into this next chapter, both personally and professionally, it seems Gomez is choosing honesty over perfection, on her own terms.
