Producer claims Netflix security failure cost Him $105 million

A film producer has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, seeking $105 million in damages after claiming that a copy of his unreleased Nicolas Cage movie was stolen from the company’s Hollywood studios.

According to the lawsuit, producer Simon Afram alleges that Netflix failed to properly protect a master copy of his World War II drama, Fortitude, resulting in the loss of the film and causing significant financial harm. The legal complaint was filed in a California court on Wednesday.

The lawsuit states that Afram and his production team delivered an unencrypted master copy of Fortitude to Netflix in June after the streaming giant requested the film as part of discussions over a possible distribution deal. Afram reportedly invested more than $45 million in the project, which took around seven years to complete. At the time, the filmmakers were hoping to secure a distribution agreement with either Netflix or another major entertainment company.

However, only nine days after the film was delivered, the producers received an email from Netflix informing them that several hard drives had been stolen from the company’s offices. According to the lawsuit, the stolen items included the drive containing the only master copy of Fortitude.

The producers argue that the theft has severely damaged the commercial value of the movie. They claim that distributors are unlikely to purchase a film that could potentially be leaked online through piracy, making it a far riskier investment. They also contend that Netflix should have implemented stronger security measures to protect valuable and confidential film materials stored at its facilities.

According to the complaint, no major distributor would be willing to spend tens of millions of dollars acquiring and promoting a film while facing the possibility that an unauthorized copy could surface online at any moment. The producers believe this ongoing risk has effectively destroyed the movie’s market value, prompting them to seek at least $105 million in compensation.

Netflix has rejected the allegations and said it does not accept responsibility for the claimed losses. In a statement, the company argued that the filmmakers delivered the master copy without using standard industry security protections, including encryption, and therefore Netflix should not be held liable for any resulting damage.

The streaming service also emphasized that although it does not own the rights to Fortitude, it takes the security of film content seriously. Netflix said it launched an investigation into the theft after the incident and has continued monitoring piracy websites to ensure that unauthorized copies of the film do not appear online.

In addition, Netflix accused Afram’s legal team of acting in bad faith. The company said it chose not to share details of its internal investigation with the producer’s lawyers because it believed they were attempting to pressure Netflix into paying a large financial settlement instead of cooperating to address the situation.

The legal dispute is expected to focus on whether Netflix had a duty to safeguard the master copy of the film and whether the theft caused the financial losses claimed by the producers. The outcome of the case could have broader implications for how studios and streaming platforms handle the security of unreleased films during distribution negotiations.

Ali Fazal prioritises meaningful stories over blockbusters

Ali Fazal is at a point in his career where the choices he makes carry a different kind of weight, and he is no longer making them for the reasons he once did. In a candid conversation with Elle India, the actor opened up about the creative philosophy guiding his work now, a deliberate shift away from commercial instincts and toward projects that leave a genuine mark. He described what worries him most as a performer with characteristic directness. “Mostly the feeling that you’ve made less of a difference in people’s lives,” he said. It is the kind of answer that says everything about how far his priorities have moved from where they began. Fazal said he now gravitates toward roles that have “less relevance and more resonance”, a distinction that defines much of his current thinking about both his Bollywood and Hollywood career. He wants the work to reflect the ambition and humanity that define him as a person, not simply as an actor building a brand. His upcoming film Raakh, a crime thriller in which he plays a police officer investigating a case rooted in real historical events from 1970s Delhi, served as the central example in his conversation. “Sometimes you’re part of things that work, and that’s wonderful because we all need appreciation to move forward,” he said. “But once in a while, there are projects that actually begin conversations. They come at a time when society perhaps needs them or needs reminding that, sadly, not much has changed fifty years later. That’s what Raakh has done. It has humbled me.” He was equally candid about how his decision-making process has changed. “Earlier, I’d jump into whatever came my way because I had to. Today, I can afford patience.” That patience is now applied most rigorously to the screenplay itself, which he described as the first and most important filter. “The punctuation in a screenplay tells you whether it’s going to be good or bad,” he said, adding with a self-aware joke: “I’m not some A-list star who’s staying away from genres because they’ll spoil my image. I’ve probably stayed away from bad scripts more than genres.” His early career also featured in the conversation. He credited Always Kabhi Kabhi, a film that performed modestly at the box office, with teaching him the grammar of cinema. The film introduced him to Shah Rukh Khan, who produced it, and whom Fazal described as “one of the best artists we have.” On Mirzapur: The Film, which brings the streaming universe to theatres, Fazal called it “a giant experiment,” and on his character Guddu Pandit, he said what has stayed with him is not the violence but the innocence beneath it. Away from acting, he and his wife Richa Chadha are building Pushing Buttons Studios, their independent production company aimed at supporting original storytelling. Asked to describe his journey in a single word, Fazal chose “relentless.” It is the right word for a career that is now defined not by the roles he has taken but by the ones he has chosen to wait for.

Sophie Turner names fan-favorite hair color from h…

Sophie Turner is looking back at the many hair colors she has worn throughout her career, revealing which shade gets the most positive reaction from fans. The 30-year-old actress became internationally famous as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, a role that transformed her career and made her auburn-red hair one of her most recognizable features. Turner began dyeing her naturally blonde hair red at just 13 after landing the role in 2009. Since then, she has experimented with several different shades, including platinum blonde, auburn and brunette. (People.com) From natural blonde to Sansa’s signature red Turner’s hair transformation was closely connected to her Game of Thrones journey. Her natural blonde hair had to be changed to an auburn-red shade for Sansa, creating a look that audiences quickly associated with the character. Over the years, Turner has spoken positively about the red color because of what it represents in her career. In a previous interview, she explained that the shade was especially meaningful because it was the first major hair transformation she experienced for a professional role. She also associated red hair with the strong characters she had played. (Allure) However, red is no longer the only color connected to Turner. She has repeatedly returned to blonde, experimented with darker shades and even appeared as a brunette for her upcoming role as Lara Croft in Amazon’s Tomb Raider series. (People.com) Blonde gets the biggest reaction In a recent interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Turner reflected on how people respond to her different hair eras. According to the actress, blonde has received the most positive reactions. Red, meanwhile, can create strong reactions but does not generate them as consistently. She also explained that brunette hair can make her feel more anonymous because people are less likely to recognize her. The comments show how dramatically hair color can influence the way Turner is perceived. After spending much of her teenage years and early adulthood associated with Sansa’s red hair, returning to blonde has offered her a different sense of identity. A career defined by transformation Turner’s changing hair colors have become a visual timeline of her career. From the red-haired Sansa Stark to her blonde looks and latest brunette transformation, each era has accompanied a different stage of her professional life. While fans may have their own favorite shade, Turner’s latest comments make one thing clear: blonde currently wins when it comes to the most positive public reaction.

Jewellery emerges as luxury’s fastest-growing segment

Luxury jewellery is becoming one of the strongest-performing categories in the global fashion industry as demand for traditional products such as handbags and shoes continues to slow. Industry analysts say major luxury houses are increasingly investing in jewellery, viewing it as the sector with the greatest growth potential amid changing consumer preferences. The shift has benefited both established jewellery brands and smaller luxury labels. Companies that were once known primarily for fashion and leather goods are now placing greater emphasis on expanding their jewellery collections to attract consumers looking for timeless, investment-worthy pieces. Among the biggest beneficiaries are luxury groups Richemont and LVMH, which own some of the world’s leading jewellery brands. However, smaller brands have also recorded strong growth, encouraging fashion-focused companies to strengthen their presence in the category. According to the report, the industry’s positive performance has renewed interest in jewellery across the luxury sector. French luxury group Kering, which owns jewellery brands Pomellato and Boucheron, reported particularly strong results earlier this year. The company announced in April that sales from its new jewellery division increased 22% on a comparable basis during the first quarter, outperforming all of its other business segments. The figures highlighted jewellery’s growing importance as a revenue driver. Luxury brand Hermès has also experienced rapid growth in jewellery. Analysts at investment firm Vontobel estimate that the company’s jewellery business has achieved a compound annual growth rate of nearly 30% since 2019, although they note that the division still represents a relatively small part of Hermès’ overall business. Industry experts believe this trend reflects broader changes in consumer behaviour. Luxury analyst Madjo said, “Even at soft luxury players like Hermes, Prada, Gucci, everybody’s putting a bit more emphasis on jewellery because that’s where the growth is coming from right now. So you want to be exposed to that.” At the same time, traditional luxury categories such as handbags and shoes are facing increasing pressure. Hermès, whose reputation has long been built around its highly exclusive Birkin bags, recently saw its shares fall about 10% after reporting weaker-than-expected first-quarter growth. The results prompted questions about whether the company’s scarcity-based business model can continue delivering the same level of success. Claudia D’Arpizio, senior partner at consultancy Bain & Company, said changing consumer tastes are reshaping the luxury market. “Bags and shoes are facing meaningful headwinds, as both have experienced significant softening in consumer desirability, particularly among younger audiences,” she said. She added that these categories have traditionally generated strong revenues and profit margins, but post-pandemic market conditions have made them far more challenging. According to D’Arpizio, luxury brands must now develop new strategies to remain competitive, with jewellery increasingly emerging as one of the industry’s most promising growth opportunities.

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to a brutal sexual assault by unidentified perpetrators in the Gujranwala area, triggering widespread grief and anger across Pakistan. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of children and the growing number of violent crimes being reported across the country. According to reports, the incident took place in Feroze Wala Kala Khatai Gol Pind near Gujranwala. The minor was allegedly taken to nearby fields, where she was sexually assaulted by multiple suspects. Her cries for help alerted local residents, who rushed towards the area and intervened. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify and arrest those responsible. The victim was later taken to a police station in critical condition. Reports said that she was in severe distress and was unable to sit comfortably following the alleged assault. The incident has also sparked criticism of the media after the child’s father appeared before news outlets while attempting to conceal his daughter’s face. Despite the family’s efforts to protect the minor’s identity, reports claimed that some media channels broadcast footage showing the child’s face without blurring it. The decision has drawn condemnation from members of the public and celebrities, who argued that protecting the privacy and dignity of a minor victim should be a basic responsibility of the media. Actress Amar Khan expressed her anger over the alleged assault as well as the media’s handling of the victim’s identity. She criticised the decision to broadcast the child’s unblurred face, calling attention to the ethical responsibilities of news organisations when reporting cases involving minors. Maya Khan also reacted emotionally to the incident, urging people to take action against such cruelty. She wrote, “Please do something before Allah reacts to this cruelty and punishes us.” Malik Aqeel was also among those who expressed grief over the disturbing case. The incident has prompted another wave of public outrage on social media, with many users demanding strict action against those responsible. Several commentators questioned whether parents can feel safe raising daughters when children continue to face such horrific violence. Some users called for stronger punishments for perpetrators of crimes against children, while others expressed frustration over what they described as repeated failures to protect vulnerable minors. Many social media users also tagged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, urging authorities to ensure a swift investigation and bring the suspects to justice. The alleged assault comes amid growing public concern over reports of rape, murder, kidnapping and other violent crimes across Pakistan. Recent cases involving children and other vulnerable victims have intensified demands for stronger law enforcement, better protection for minors and greater accountability. As the investigation continues, the public is awaiting concrete action against those responsible for the Gujranwala incident. The case has once again highlighted the urgent need to protect children from violence and ensure that victims are treated with dignity and privacy throughout the legal process.

Ainak Wala Jin creator Hafeez Tahir condemns AI remake

Veteran writer and director Hafeez Tahir, the creator of the iconic Pakistani fantasy television series Ainak Wala Jin, has strongly criticised the makers of the recently released AI-generated film adaptation, alleging that his original work was used without his permission. The AI-based adaptation was released in cinemas earlier this month, prompting Tahir to share a video on Instagram in which he expressed his disappointment and urged the public to spread awareness about what he described as the unauthorised use of his creation. In the caption accompanying the video, he referred to the matter as “daylight robbery.” Speaking directly to viewers, Tahir asserted that Ainak Wala Jin was entirely his original creation. “Today I am very angry because my life’s work, Ainak Wala Jin, is being taken and its name is being used in an AI-generated film that has been released in theatres. I’d like to tell you all that this is my idea, my concept, my creation,” he said. The veteran filmmaker further explained his role in developing the beloved television series. “I am the concept writer. I created the name, I directed it and made a quality serial,” Tahir stated. He added that he later sold the rights to a private television channel, which, according to him, continues to benefit from the show’s popularity by attracting millions of views through YouTube uploads. Tahir also alleged that neither the filmmaker nor the cinema releasing the AI adaptation sought his approval before using the title and concept. “Neither the filmmaker nor the cinema that released the film sought my permission,” he claimed. The creator further criticised the heavy reliance on artificial intelligence in the adaptation, arguing that it stripped away the originality and emotional appeal of the classic television series. “To take a series and base it on AI is to ruin an iconic idea. They’ve changed the appearance of the characters and destroyed them,” he said. Expressing particular disappointment over the portrayal of one of the show’s most recognisable characters, Tahir added, “My main character, Nastoor Jin, looks like a dacoit here. They have changed the original characters, their voices and replaced them with AI-generated music. In this way, they have ruined such a beautiful idea.” Concluding his statement, Tahir suggested he may pursue legal action over the matter. “Now tell me, should we stay quiet or move forward and take legal action?” he asked. The video drew significant attention online, with many fans supporting Tahir and expressing concern over the use of artificial intelligence to recreate a cherished Pakistani television classic without the creator’s involvement. Several users criticised the filmmakers for relying on AI, while others said the controversy was upsetting because Ainak Wala Jin remains an important part of their childhood memories. One fan described the series as a defining part of growing up, while another said the situation was “so upsetting.” Originally broadcast in 1993, Ainak Wala Jin became one of Pakistan’s most popular children’s fantasy dramas. Running for 152 episodes, the series followed Nastoor Jin, portrayed by Shahzad Qaiser, a genie who travels to the human world in search of a cure for his weak eyesight. The show remains one of the country’s most memorable television productions decades after its original release.
