Ali Fazal prioritises meaningful stories over blockbusters

Ali Fazal is at a point in his career where the choices he makes carry a different kind of weight, and he is no longer making them for the reasons he once did. In a candid conversation with Elle India, the actor opened up about the creative philosophy guiding his work now, a deliberate shift away from commercial instincts and toward projects that leave a genuine mark.
He described what worries him most as a performer with characteristic directness. “Mostly the feeling that you’ve made less of a difference in people’s lives,” he said. It is the kind of answer that says everything about how far his priorities have moved from where they began.
Fazal said he now gravitates toward roles that have “less relevance and more resonance”, a distinction that defines much of his current thinking about both his Bollywood and Hollywood career. He wants the work to reflect the ambition and humanity that define him as a person, not simply as an actor building a brand.
His upcoming film Raakh, a crime thriller in which he plays a police officer investigating a case rooted in real historical events from 1970s Delhi, served as the central example in his conversation. “Sometimes you’re part of things that work, and that’s wonderful because we all need appreciation to move forward,” he said. “But once in a while, there are projects that actually begin conversations. They come at a time when society perhaps needs them or needs reminding that, sadly, not much has changed fifty years later. That’s what Raakh has done. It has humbled me.”
He was equally candid about how his decision-making process has changed. “Earlier, I’d jump into whatever came my way because I had to. Today, I can afford patience.” That patience is now applied most rigorously to the screenplay itself, which he described as the first and most important filter. “The punctuation in a screenplay tells you whether it’s going to be good or bad,” he said, adding with a self-aware joke: “I’m not some A-list star who’s staying away from genres because they’ll spoil my image. I’ve probably stayed away from bad scripts more than genres.”
His early career also featured in the conversation. He credited Always Kabhi Kabhi, a film that performed modestly at the box office, with teaching him the grammar of cinema. The film introduced him to Shah Rukh Khan, who produced it, and whom Fazal described as “one of the best artists we have.”
On Mirzapur: The Film, which brings the streaming universe to theatres, Fazal called it “a giant experiment,” and on his character Guddu Pandit, he said what has stayed with him is not the violence but the innocence beneath it.
Away from acting, he and his wife Richa Chadha are building Pushing Buttons Studios, their independent production company aimed at supporting original storytelling. Asked to describe his journey in a single word, Fazal chose “relentless.” It is the right word for a career that is now defined not by the roles he has taken but by the ones he has chosen to wait for.

KP government orders immediate closure of mines

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has ordered the immediate closure of all mines where explosive materials are used, as part of a broader effort to strengthen security and tighten oversight of potentially hazardous substances across the province. According to official directives issued by the Provincial Home Department in Peshawar, all district administrations have been instructed to take immediate action and ensure strict implementation of the government’s orders. The directive emphasizes the need for swift compliance and close coordination among local authorities to enforce the new measures without delay. The Home Department has also directed all districts to prepare and submit comprehensive lists of mines operating within their jurisdictions. These lists will distinguish between mines that use explosives and those that do not. Officials have been instructed to classify all mines using explosive materials under a Red List, indicating that they fall under stricter regulatory scrutiny and are subject to immediate closure or further action. On the other hand, mines extracting soft rock without the use of explosive materials will be placed on a Green List. These mines are considered comparatively safer from a security perspective and may continue operations in accordance with existing regulations, provided they comply with all relevant legal requirements. The department has instructed district administrations to submit both the Green List and the Red List as soon as possible. The reports are expected to provide a clear picture of mining activities across the province and help authorities monitor compliance with the latest directives. In addition to regulating mining operations, the Home Department has ordered strict monitoring of the purchase, sale, transportation, storage, and use of explosive materials. Authorities have also been instructed to closely monitor the movement and use of urea fertilizer, which can potentially be misused in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices if diverted from legitimate agricultural purposes. As part of these measures, all districts have been asked to compile and submit complete district-wise lists of licensed urea dealers. The purpose of collecting this information is to strengthen oversight of the distribution chain and prevent the illegal sale or diversion of urea for unlawful activities. The Home Department has further instructed all relevant officials to submit the required reports and lists without delay. Once these reports are received, the provincial government will review the findings and determine any additional actions that may be necessary. Relevant authorities are expected to take further administrative, regulatory, or legal measures based on the information collected from across the province. The latest directives reflect the KP government’s commitment to enhancing public safety, improving regulatory oversight of mining activities, and preventing the misuse of explosive materials. By introducing a district-wise classification system and increasing surveillance over explosives and urea distribution, the provincial administration aims to strengthen law enforcement efforts and reduce potential security risks associated with unauthorized use of hazardous substances. The implementation of these measures is expected to improve coordination among government departments and ensure greater accountability in the mining and chemical supply sectors across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Afridi to lead PTI march on Islamabad, says ‘no …

HANGU: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has announced that he will personally lead Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers during the party’s planned long march to Islamabad on September 27, insisting that the date is final and the movement will continue until its demands are met. Speaking during a visit to Hangu on Saturday, Afridi addressed PTI gatherings at Hangu Bazaar Chowk and Abu Bakr Siddique Chowk as part of preparations for the party’s street movement. PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar Khan, provincial ministers and other party leaders and workers were also present. Afridi called on party supporters to begin full preparations for the march, saying there would be no retreat. He told workers that he would lead them to Islamabad and expressed confidence that the movement would return with success. The chief minister also criticised what he described as the failure to implement a Supreme Court directive concerning PTI founder Imran Khan’s medical treatment. Afridi claimed that a three-member bench had ordered arrangements for Khan’s treatment at Shifa International Hospital, but the directive had not been carried out despite time being granted for implementation. He accused the authorities of applying court orders selectively, alleging that decisions involving PTI and its supporters were enforced quickly while the order concerning Khan’s treatment remained unimplemented. Afridi urged the judiciary to ensure that laws and court decisions were applied equally, arguing that the country could not operate under separate standards for different groups. Turning to the economy, the chief minister claimed that Pakistan’s public debt had climbed to Rs97 trillion while inflation and financial pressures continued to affect ordinary citizens. He also alleged that industrial investment was shifting abroad and that farmers were facing increasing difficulties. Afridi portrayed Imran Khan as a unifying national figure and argued that his return would help rebuild public trust in state institutions and contribute to political stability. He also criticised government policies that he said were contributing to loss of life while benefiting a limited section of society. Appealing particularly to young Pakistanis, Afridi urged them to take an active role in the September 27 movement. He said the youth make up a major share of PTI’s supporters and argued that they should play a decisive role in determining the country’s political future.

Was Celeste Rivas pregnant? DA reveals detail in D4vd case

A key clarification has emerged in the murder case against singer D4vd, as the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Celeste Rivas Hernandez was not pregnant at the time of her death, putting to rest speculation that surfaced during recent court proceedings. The clarification follows widespread discussion after prosecutors presented text messages during a preliminary hearing showing that Rivas had previously become pregnant in 2024, when she was 13 years old, and later underwent an abortion. The disclosure led to online speculation that she may have also been pregnant when she died in April 2025. According to the District Attorney’s Office, investigators do not believe Rivas was pregnant at the time of her death. Prosecutors shared the update with People on July 29, explaining that the clarification was issued after an amendment to her death certificate had changed the pregnancy section from “no” to “unknown,” creating confusion about her medical status. The murder case centres on David Anthony Burke, the singer professionally known as D4vd, who has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 and unlawful mutilation of human remains. During the preliminary hearing, prosecutors introduced text messages exchanged between Burke and Rivas regarding the earlier pregnancy. In one message, Rivas wrote, “Both of us aren’t able to take care of it,” while Burke replied, “I know but still.” Prosecutors presented the messages as part of their evidence during the hearing. Court proceedings also included testimony from investigators and forensic experts as prosecutors argued there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. The hearing focused on determining whether enough evidence existed to hold Burke over for trial rather than deciding guilt or innocence. Earlier this week, a Los Angeles judge ruled that prosecutors had presented enough evidence for Burke to stand trial on the charges. The decision came after several days of testimony and the presentation of forensic, digital and documentary evidence by the prosecution. Rivas’ remains were discovered in September 2025 inside the trunk of a Tesla linked to Burke. Authorities later ruled her death a homicide, leading to Burke’s arrest in April 2026. He remains in custody after pleading not guilty to all charges filed against him. The District Attorney’s latest clarification specifically addresses speculation surrounding Rivas’ pregnancy status, confirming that while the teenager had previously experienced a pregnancy more than a year before her death, she was not pregnant when she was killed. Prosecutors said the earlier text messages and abortion were unrelated to her medical condition at the time of her death. The criminal case against Burke will now move forward after the judge’s ruling, with further proceedings expected in the coming weeks as prosecutors continue pursuing the charges against the singer.

FPSC clarifies reports on CSS candidate decline

The Federal Public Service Commission has formally rejected claims of a 45 per cent decline in the number of candidates taking the Central Superior Services examinations, describing such media reports as factually incorrect and misleading. In an official statement, the commission explained that recent news reports suggesting a sharp drop in youth interest were based on data that had been incorrectly compared and interpreted without proper context, leading to a distorted view of actual participation. To clarify candidate statistics, the commission released official figures regarding the 2025 examination cycle. A total of 64,081 candidates registered for the 2025 Mandatory Preliminary Test screening, an annual preliminary process that the commission noted was completely overlooked in the media’s calculations. For the subsequent 2025 written examination, 18,139 candidates applied and 12,792 ultimately sat for the papers. From these, 354 candidates passed the written phase, 342 were declared eligible following interviews, and 170 candidates received final service allocations across various civil service branches. The commission also pointed out that media analyses had omitted results from the Special CSS 2023 examinations, which allocated 141 candidates to civil service posts. This special iteration was specifically designed to benefit women, minorities, and candidates from underdeveloped regions, further reinforcing the examination as a viable career path for Pakistani youth. Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accurate data verification, the commission urged analysts and media outlets to verify details before drawing conclusions, maintaining that the civil service remains a top priority and aspiration for the country’s youth.

Iranian lawmaker questions Saudi defence pact with Pakistan, Türkiye

TEHRAN: Iranian parliamentarian Ebrahim Rezaei has questioned whether Saudi Arabia’s new defence agreement with Pakistan and Türkiye can guarantee the Kingdom’s security. Rezaei, a member of Iran’s Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, made the remarks in a social media post. He said Saudi Arabia should understand that the agreement with Pakistan and Türkiye would not provide the level of protection Riyadh had failed to obtain despite decades of reliance on the United States. Rezaei described the agreement as a “paper pact” and urged Saudi Arabia to reconsider its policies so that it would not have to seek security guarantees from other countries. His comments came shortly after Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye signed a joint defence agreement in Makkah. The agreement was signed amid concerns over potential attacks on Saudi Arabia by Iran-aligned militias in Iraq and Yemen. Saudi officials have reportedly warned of such security threats. Under the new agreement, an attack against any one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all three. The pact aims to strengthen defence cooperation and develop joint capabilities among Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye. A trilateral defence summit was held at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah, attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the three leaders signed the agreement, formally described as the Makkah Defence Joint Agreement.
