US strikes IRGC bases after Iran missile attack

The Middle East moved a step closer to a broader regional conflict after the United States launched large-scale airstrikes against dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities across Iran in retaliation for Tehran’s ballistic missile attack targeting American forces stationed in the region.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation targeted military command centers, drone infrastructure, weapons depots and other strategic IRGC installations during a coordinated two-hour campaign. US officials said the strikes were intended to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten American troops, commercial shipping lanes and allied Gulf nations.

Iranian state media reported that at least three people were killed during strikes on Qeshm Island, while authorities vowed that the country would continue defending its territory against what it described as “American aggression.”

The crisis quickly spread beyond Iran’s borders. Jordan announced that its air defence systems intercepted five missiles following Iran’s confirmed launch toward US military installations in the kingdom. Washington maintained that all missiles directed at American bases were successfully intercepted, preventing casualties among US personnel.

In another major development, US and Saudi forces carried out coordinated strikes against Iran-backed armed groups operating in eastern Iraq after drone attacks launched from Iraqi territory targeted Saudi oil facilities. The joint operation marked the first publicly acknowledged military action conducted together by Washington and Riyadh against Iran-aligned militias.

Regional instability deepened further after a fire broke out aboard a US-owned gas storage tanker at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta. Although maritime security experts suggested the blaze may have resulted from a drone strike, Egyptian officials confirmed only the fire and said investigations into its cause were continuing.

The latest escalation comes against the backdrop of months of confrontation between Iran, the United States and Israel. Fighting resumed after disputes over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz ended a short-lived ceasefire reached in June.

US President Donald Trump reiterated that America would respond decisively to attacks on its forces while insisting diplomatic efforts remained active. However, continued military exchanges around the Strait of Hormuz have complicated negotiations and increased concerns over global energy supplies.

Iran has claimed it targeted three tankers attempting to pass through what it called an unauthorized route in the strait, while rejecting an Omani-backed proposal supported by Gulf states for joint management of the crucial waterway.

The conflict has also rattled global energy markets, with Brent crude prices climbing above $90 per barrel before easing later in trading.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s Iran-backed Popular Mobilisation Forces said at least 20 of their fighters were killed in the US-Saudi strikes, prompting Baghdad to condemn the attacks as a violation of its sovereignty while urging all armed groups to halt cross-border military operations.

Saudi Arabia has also intensified diplomatic efforts, with Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman meeting US Vice President JD Vance in Washington to urge restraint. Saudi officials reportedly warned that expanding military operations against Yemen’s Houthis and Iran-backed militias in Iraq could trigger unpredictable consequences across the Middle East, highlighting growing fears that the conflict could widen even further.

Trump reportedly eyes Infantino for UN Secretary-General

US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering FIFA President Gianni Infantino for the post of United Nations secretary-general, according to media reports. The reported move comes shortly after the successful conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which ended on July 19. Reports suggest Trump believes Infantino has gained international recognition for his leadership of world football and his ability to bring countries together through sport. The US president is said to view the FIFA chief as a respected global figure capable of promoting dialogue and cooperation among nations. Trump and Infantino developed a closer working relationship during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Throughout the tournament, the FIFA president maintained regular contact with US officials and played a key role in coordinating one of the world’s biggest sporting events. Media reports claim Trump was impressed by Infantino’s management of the tournament and believes his international experience could make him a suitable candidate to lead the United Nations. However, neither the White House nor FIFA has officially confirmed the reports. There has also been no indication that Infantino has accepted or is interested in seeking the UN’s top position. It remains unclear whether the matter has been formally discussed between the two sides. The process of selecting the next UN secretary-general is highly competitive. Any candidate must first receive the support of the 15-member United Nations Security Council. The five permanent members of the council each hold veto power, meaning a single objection can block a nomination. The successful candidate must then be approved by the UN General Assembly. The reported development comes as the United Nations prepares for a leadership transition later this year. Current Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to leave office at the end of December after completing his second term. Political analysts say the position traditionally goes to experienced diplomats or senior political leaders with broad international support. If Infantino’s name is formally proposed, it would represent an unusual choice because of his background in global sports administration rather than diplomacy.

  • Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas penalised for cond…

Pakistan fast bowlers Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas have been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching its Code of Conduct during the first Test against the West Indies. Shahzad was fined 15 per cent of his match fee. Abbas, meanwhile, received an official reprimand. Both players were also handed one demerit point on their disciplinary records. It was the first such offence for each player during the past 24 months. The action was taken under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The provision deals with language, actions or gestures that can disparage a batter or provoke an aggressive response after a dismissal. Shahzad was sanctioned following the dismissal of West Indies batter Shai Hope. The Pakistan pacer celebrated aggressively after taking the wicket during the 17th over of the West Indies’ second innings. Abbas was penalised for his animated celebration after dismissing Jomel Warrican. The charges were brought by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Kettleborough. Third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal was also involved in the disciplinary process. The proposed sanctions came from Jeff Crowe, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Both Pakistani bowlers accepted their respective offences and the proposed penalties. As a result, no formal hearing was required. Under ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches can result in an official reprimand or a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee. Players can also receive one or two demerit points. The demerit points remain on a player’s disciplinary record for 24 months. A player who accumulates four or more demerit points during that period can have them converted into suspension points. Such suspension points can eventually lead to a ban from international cricket.

Aima Baig breaks silence on domestic violence rumours

Pakistani singer Aima Baig has addressed growing speculation surrounding a recent video in which she appeared with a visible injury near her eye. The clip quickly attracted attention on social media, prompting fans to express concern about her wellbeing and leading to widespread rumours that the singer may have been a victim of domestic violence. The speculation gained momentum after viewers noticed a bruise on her face. With little information available about how the injury occurred, some social media users began suggesting that there could be a more serious story behind it. However, Baig has now personally responded to the rumours and made it clear that there was no such incident. Taking to her Instagram Stories, the singer thanked her fans for their concern while reassuring them that she was completely fine. She directly rejected claims of domestic violence and said there was no hidden situation behind the injury. Baig explained that the bruise was the result of an accidental incident that happened early in the morning after she returned home from dance rehearsals. According to the singer, she was extremely exhausted at the time and accidentally slammed her face into a door at around 5 a.m. The incident left her with a bruise, which subsequently became the subject of intense online speculation. Baig appeared keen to put the matter to rest, stressing that there was nothing more serious behind the injury. She also revealed that she was already unwell when the accident happened. The singer said she was suffering from fever and flu at the time, making the situation even more uncomfortable. Despite feeling unwell and dealing with the injury, she assured her followers that her overall health has been improving. Baig further shared that she remains busy with her professional commitments. She said she has continued working, dancing and attending rehearsals, while describing herself as healthier and happier than she has been in a long time. Her response appeared aimed at calming concerned fans and stopping further speculation about her personal life. Rather than allowing the rumours to grow, she chose to explain the circumstances herself and clarify that the injury was simply the result of an unfortunate accident. The singer also maintained a lighthearted tone while addressing the situation. She acknowledged that she appreciated the love and concern shown by her followers but urged them not to turn an accidental moment into something more dramatic. Baig’s clarification comes as social media users continue to closely follow the personal lives of celebrities, with even minor details often sparking speculation. In this case, the visible bruise led to assumptions before the singer had an opportunity to explain what had actually happened. By speaking out, Baig has made her position clear: the injury was accidental, there was no domestic violence involved, and there is no hidden story behind the incident. She has also reassured fans that she is recovering well and continuing with her work. For now, the singer appears ready to move past the incident and focus on her music, performances and upcoming professional activities. Her message was ultimately a reminder to fans that appearances on social media do not always tell the complete story, and that speculation can quickly grow when facts are not immediately available.

Hamilton leads Ferrari One-Two in Hungarian grand …

Lewis Hamilton led teammate Charles Leclerc to a Ferrari one-two in Friday practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix, signaling strong form for the Scuderia at the Hungaroring. Hamilton was 0.148 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with McLaren’s Lando Norris third, 0.499 seconds off the pace, and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen fourth. Ferrari looked in good shape on a track that lends itself to the car’s strong cornering performance. Mercedes, however, appeared to have some work to do, with George Russell in fifth, 0.933 seconds off the pace, and championship leader Kimi Antonelli in 13th. Antonelli did not complete a qualifying simulation lap in the second session after his first attempt was abandoned when Franco Colapinto crashed his Alpine at the last corner, and his second came to grief after an error at the chicane. Antonelli was complaining throughout the session about his car’s balance. Fernando Alonso ended the day 19th fastest in the new Aston Martin, 2.990 seconds off the pace. Team principal Adrian Newey described the first outing for the car, which is new apart from its engine, gearbox, and front suspension, as “promising.” Alonso had a lap nearly 0.4 seconds faster ruled out for track limits at the final corner, but the team made a significant step forward from where they have spent most of the season. Newey said: “Provisional results are promising. It’s only part of the package, so we’ll have some more steps in Zandvoort and then further in Monza and Baku. It’s the first part of our planned upgrade. We’re very short on parts, so we’re being careful with it and trying to learn all about it.” Engine partner Honda is introducing a new engine at the Dutch Grand Prix after the summer break. The day was not all positive for Aston Martin, however, as Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll spun out of the first session with what initially appeared to be a rear suspension failure. He was unable to take part in the second session because there was not enough time to repair the car. Team representative Pedro de la Rosa confirmed: “It is a suspension failure. We were confident it would not happen in Fernando’s car. That’s why we sent him out. Because of the lack of spares we couldn’t repair his car on time.” Ferrari’s strong performance in practice positions them as the team to beat heading into qualifying, with Hamilton looking comfortable in the car and Leclerc close behind. McLaren and Red Bull will need to find improvements if they are to challenge the Ferraris, while Mercedes face a significant task to unlock pace for qualifying and the race. Aston Martin’s upgrades offer hope for the future, but they remain off the pace of the frontrunners. The Hungaroring, known for its twisty nature, often rewards cars with strong downforce and cornering ability, which played to Ferrari’s strengths. As the weekend progresses, teams will be fine-tuning their setups for qualifying and race day, with the battle for pole position and victory set to be a closely contested affair. The weather conditions could also play a role, with forecasts suggesting the possibility of rain, adding another layer of unpredictability to the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. Fans are eagerly anticipating the action, with the Hungaroring historically producing exciting races. Ferrari will be looking to convert their practice pace into a strong result, while their rivals will be working hard to close the gap and challenge for the top step of the podium. The stage is set for a thrilling weekend of Formula 1 action in Hungary.
