US launches heavy strikes on Iran after missile at…

The United States has resumed large-scale military operations against Iran, launching what officials described as a “heavy wave” of precision strikes after a five-night pause, dramatically escalating tensions across the Middle East and raising fresh concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the overnight operation targeted dozens of sites linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including military command centres, missile and drone facilities, coastal defence systems and maritime infrastructure. The strikes came in response to Iranian missile attacks a day earlier on American forces stationed at a US military base in Jordan.

US President Donald Trump had warned that Washington would respond “very hard” to any attack on American troops, and the latest operation marked one of the most extensive US offensives since the conflict intensified earlier this year.

Iranian state media reported that at least three civilians were killed in the strikes, including a couple and their two-year-old child after a residential building on Qeshm Island was hit. The IRGC also confirmed that three of its personnel were killed during the attacks.

Explosions were reported across several southern Iranian cities, including Ahvaz, Abadan, Bushehr, Kazerun and Farashband. Iranian media said power outages affected parts of Ahvaz following strikes in the oil-rich Khuzestan province, while local officials confirmed that multiple locations in Abadan had also been targeted.

The confrontation quickly spread beyond Iran. Jordan said its air defence systems intercepted five Iranian missiles launched toward its territory after Tehran targeted a US airbase and command headquarters inside the kingdom. No casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, Kuwait confirmed that an Iranian strike hit a building belonging to a Chinese company in the country’s north, killing one worker and causing significant damage. Saudi Arabia condemned Iran’s attacks on Jordan, describing them as a violation of international law and regional stability.

Despite the renewed fighting, diplomatic contacts continue behind the scenes. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said negotiations between Tehran and Washington remain active, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to reduce tensions. Iranian officials also confirmed that discussions with Omani mediators regarding the future of the strategic waterway are continuing.

The Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of the crisis. Iran insists the waterway remains closed because of US military actions, while Washington accuses Tehran of threatening global shipping and using maritime pressure to strengthen the IRGC’s influence.

Adding economic pressure, the US Treasury imposed fresh sanctions on two Iranian companies accused of supporting an IRGC-backed maritime insurance network.

Security analysts say Washington now faces a critical decision: continue targeting Iran’s military infrastructure around Hormuz or expand attacks on key national infrastructure. While the latest strikes signal a tougher military posture, experts believe both sides still have incentives to leave the door open for diplomacy, even as the risk of a wider regional war continues to grow.

Salman Rushdie attacker convicted on US federal terrorism charges

The man who stabbed renowned author Salman Rushdie during a public event in 2022 has been found guilty on multiple federal terrorism charges in the United States. The verdict marks another major legal milestone in a case that drew worldwide attention because of the long standing threats against the celebrated novelist. A federal jury in Buffalo, New York, convicted 28 year old Hadi Matar after only a few hours of deliberation. Prosecutors argued that the attack was motivated by decades old calls for Rushdie’s death following the publication of his controversial novel The Satanic Verses. Matar was found guilty of attempting to provide material support to Hezbollah, engaging in terrorism across national borders, and providing support to terrorists. Matar is already serving a 25 year prison sentence after being convicted in a New York state court for attempted murder. Following the federal conviction, he now faces the possibility of life imprisonment when he is sentenced in November. The federal trial began last week and included testimony from Rushdie himself. The 79 year old author described the attack that left him with life changing injuries. The defence did not call Matar or any other witnesses to testify during the proceedings. Rushdie has lived under threat since the publication of The Satanic Verses in 1988. The novel sparked widespread controversy in parts of the Muslim world, leading Iran’s then Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to issue a religious decree in 1989 calling for the author’s death. The fatwa also targeted people involved in publishing the book and led to violent attacks over the following years, including the killing of Japanese translator Hitoshi Igarashi in 1991. Although the Iranian government later distanced itself from the fatwa, US prosecutors said it continued to receive support from Hezbollah leaders and was reaffirmed by Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Matar spent more than a year studying the fatwa before carrying out the attack. They argued that he deliberately planned the assault to carry out the religious decree against Rushdie. The attack took place on August 12, 2022, while Rushdie was preparing to speak at the Chautauqua Institution, an educational and cultural centre in New York state. Matar rushed onto the stage and repeatedly stabbed the author before audience members intervened and restrained him until police arrived. Rushdie suffered multiple stab wounds to his head, neck, chest, and hand. The injuries permanently blinded him in one eye and caused severe damage to several internal organs. Another man on stage was also injured during the incident. Born in the United States and holding Lebanese citizenship, Matar had been living in New Jersey before the attack. His conviction in state court earlier resulted in a 25 year prison sentence, but the federal terrorism charges carry significantly harsher penalties. Rushdie, who was born in India and later became a British and American citizen, spent many years under police protection after the fatwa was issued. He lived largely in hiding throughout the 1990s before gradually returning to public life and eventually settling in New York City. The latest verdict closes another chapter in one of the most widely followed literary and terrorism related cases in recent history. It also reinforces the long lasting impact of threats that began nearly four decades ago over a work of fiction and continued to influence events many years later.

Faisal Qureshi defends Hania Aamir’s rising star power

Pakistani actor Faisal Qureshi has openly supported actress Hania Aamir’s growing popularity and commercial value, saying there is nothing wrong with the actress demanding a higher fee for brand collaborations. During a recent podcast appearance, Faisal was asked about Hania’s increasing influence in Pakistan’s entertainment industry and her growing presence in major advertising campaigns. In response, the veteran actor praised the actress and acknowledged that she has established herself as one of the country’s most recognisable stars. Faisal pointed out that Hania’s face can currently be seen across the country on billboards, signboards and various advertising campaigns. According to him, the fact that major companies continue to choose Hania to represent their products is a clear indication of her strong market position and popularity. Calling her a star, Faisal said that Hania has reached a stage in her career where leading brands are interested in associating their names with her. He suggested that her widespread visibility is not simply the result of her television and film projects but also reflects the strong connection she has built with audiences. The actor further explained that Hania is aware of her current position in the entertainment industry. With her popularity continuing to rise, brands are also aware of her market value and the attention she can bring to their campaigns. Faisal also defended Hania against criticism over reports that she charges a higher fee for brand endorsements. He argued that an artist’s fee naturally increases when their demand and commercial appeal grow. According to Faisal, there is no reason for an artist to feel guilty about asking for a higher payment when their popularity has increased significantly. He suggested that fees are often determined by an artist’s demand in the market, their ability to attract audiences and the value they bring to a commercial campaign. His comments come at a time when Hania Aamir has become one of the most prominent young faces in Pakistan’s entertainment and advertising industries. The actress has developed a substantial fan following through her television projects and social media presence, while her public image has also made her a sought-after choice for major brands. Faisal’s remarks highlight the changing dynamics of Pakistan’s entertainment industry, where an actor’s commercial value is increasingly influenced by their visibility, digital following and overall popularity. By supporting Hania’s decision to charge according to her market value, Faisal emphasised that successful artists should be able to benefit from the demand they have created. His comments also suggest that higher fees can be viewed as a natural outcome of an artist reaching a stronger position within the industry rather than as a matter of controversy.

What happens to your body if you drink soft drinks…

Soft drinks have become a regular part of modern lifestyles, with many people enjoying them during meals, celebrations, and social gatherings. While these sugary beverages are refreshing and widely available, health experts warn that drinking them every day can have serious consequences for overall well-being. Regular consumption of soft drinks has been linked to several health problems, making it important to understand the risks and choose healthier alternatives whenever possible. One of the biggest concerns is the high sugar content found in most carbonated beverages. A single can of soft drink often contains a significant amount of added sugar and calories, which can contribute to weight gain over time. Consuming excess sugar regularly increases the risk of obesity, a condition that is closely associated with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Soft drinks may also contribute to dehydration. Although they are liquids, many contain caffeine, which can have a mild diuretic effect in some individuals. Combined with high sugar levels, these beverages may not hydrate the body as effectively as water. As a result, people who rely heavily on soft drinks instead of water may experience headaches, fatigue, constipation, and reduced energy levels. Another area of concern is digestive health. Nutrition experts suggest that excessive intake of sugary and artificially sweetened drinks may affect the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut. A disrupted gut microbiome can lead to digestive discomfort, increased appetite, changes in metabolism, and difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. Dental health is also at risk. The acids used in carbonated drinks can gradually wear away tooth enamel, making teeth more vulnerable to decay. At the same time, the high sugar content feeds harmful bacteria in the mouth, increasing the likelihood of cavities and gum problems. Drinking these beverages frequently throughout the day can significantly raise the risk of long-term dental damage. Research has also explored possible links between frequent consumption of sugary beverages and chronic illnesses. Studies suggest that high intake of sugar-sweetened drinks is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Some research has examined potential connections with certain types of cancer, but scientists continue to investigate these relationships, and more evidence is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Health professionals recommend limiting soft drink consumption and choosing healthier options such as water, fresh fruit-infused water, milk, buttermilk, or unsweetened natural juices. Making small dietary changes today can reduce long-term health risks and support a healthier lifestyle for years to come.

Saeed Ghani rejects MQM’s demand for new provinc…

Sindh Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani has rejected the demand for dividing Sindh and creating a new province, saying that no matter how much pressure is exerted, a new province will not be established in the province. Ghani accused the MQM of creating hatred by repeatedly raising the issue of a separate province. He said several other political parties were also opposed to dividing Sindh, while MQM leader Mustafa Kamal had himself acknowledged that people in Sukkur had rejected the idea of a new province. The provincial minister questioned the political standing of a few MQM leaders and said that even within the party, its members were not willing to sit together. Speaking about local government arrangements, Ghani said protests had previously been held against the dual local government system in Sindh. He maintained that Karachi had been given a separate system under an agreement reached with the MQM. Commenting on Jamaat-e-Islami’s protests, Ghani said the party claims to be protesting over public issues, but shutting down Karachi at multiple locations would not resolve people’s problems. He advised JI leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman to hold protests at locations where people would respond sympathetically. Ghani also criticized demands for abolishing the levy, questioning whether making life difficult for Karachi’s residents would force Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to accept the protesters’ demands. He said all provinces contribute their share of revenue to the federation, adding that Sindh had also fulfilled its financial responsibilities. According to Ghani, the political and administrative circumstances in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are different, and the demand for a new province in Sindh remains unacceptable.
