Rubio warns of catastrophic US-China conflict

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that any military or economic conflict between the United States and China would have devastating consequences for both countries and the wider world, stressing the importance of carefully managing relations between the two global powers.

Speaking during a televised interview, Rubio said the relationship between Washington and Beijing remains one of the most significant challenges in international diplomacy. He cautioned that a direct confrontation between the world’s two largest economies would create severe political, economic and security consequences far beyond their borders.

Rubio said the United States must continue protecting its national interests while avoiding actions that could trigger a major conflict. He described balancing competition with stability as one of the most difficult responsibilities of foreign policy.

His remarks come as strategic rivalry between the United States and China continues to deepen across multiple sectors, including trade, technology, security and global influence.

Economic tensions have remained high in recent years, with both countries imposing restrictions on each other’s industries. The United States has expanded trade measures and tightened controls on several Chinese products and technologies, citing national security concerns.

Washington has also introduced new restrictions on advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and robotics, as part of broader efforts to protect sensitive industries and limit the transfer of critical technologies.

China has strongly criticised these measures, calling them unfair and unilateral. Beijing has repeatedly opposed US trade restrictions and warned that it could respond with countermeasures to protect its economic interests.

Competition between the two countries has also intensified in the field of artificial intelligence, where both sides have exchanged allegations over technology development and intellectual property.

Beyond economic and technological issues, both nations continue to strengthen their global influence through different diplomatic strategies. While the United States has focused on reinforcing partnerships with regional allies, China has expanded its engagement with developing countries and strengthened ties with nations across the Global South.

Analysts believe that despite growing competition, both Washington and Beijing recognise the importance of maintaining communication to prevent tensions from escalating into open conflict.

Elon Musk takes brutal dig at actress Anne Hathawa…

Elon Musk has sparked fresh controversy after taking aim at actress Anne Hathaway over a speech she delivered nearly eight years ago in support of LGBTQ+ rights. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO criticized Hathaway on X after clips from her 2018 Human Rights Campaign National Dinner speech resurfaced online and gained renewed attention.  The debate began when marketing professor Gad Saad shared criticism of Hathaway’s remarks from the event. Responding to the post, Musk dismissed the actress in blunt terms, writing, “She’s just a marionette. Whoever wrote her speech is the real douchebag.” In separate posts, he also suggested Hathaway was simply reading a script and accused her of lacking independent thought.  Hathaway’s original speech was delivered in September 2018 after she received the National Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign. During her address, the Oscar winner spoke about equality and urged people to reject discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and race. She also encouraged audiences to embrace empathy and treat others with dignity and respect.  Although the speech was widely praised at the time, a short clip recently resurfaced on social media, introducing it to a new audience. The video quickly went viral, triggering intense debate online and drawing reactions from supporters and critics alike. Musk’s comments added fuel to the discussion, with many users defending Hathaway while others echoed his criticism.  As of now, Hathaway has not publicly responded to Musk’s remarks. Her representatives have also remained silent on the renewed backlash surrounding the years-old speech.  The exchange highlights how old public statements can resurface and generate fresh controversy years later, particularly when amplified through social media. It also reflects the increasingly polarized conversations surrounding cultural and political issues online, where comments from high-profile figures often become major talking points. For now, the disagreement remains confined to social media, with Musk standing by his criticism and Hathaway choosing not to engage publicly. Whether the actress will respond remains to be seen, but the episode has once again demonstrated how celebrity opinions and online platforms can reignite debates long after the original moment has passed.

JI Chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman urges government to…

Islamabad: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has called on the government to focus on resolving the problems faced by the people instead of relying solely on the use of force to establish the writ of the state. He made these remarks in a statement criticizing the government’s economic policies and its handling of public affairs. According to Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, a state’s authority cannot be maintained through coercive measures alone. He argued that the government should prioritize addressing the everyday concerns of citizens, including rising inflation, unemployment, and the increasing cost of essential services. He said that public trust is strengthened when governments respond to people’s needs rather than depending on administrative pressure or strict enforcement. The Jamaat-e-Islami leader strongly criticized the government’s electricity policies, alleging that the ruling authorities are placing an unbearable financial burden on the public through high electricity charges. He stated that ordinary citizens are struggling to pay their utility bills at a time when the cost of living continues to rise. According to him, households and businesses alike are being severely affected by expensive electricity tariffs, making it increasingly difficult for many families to manage their monthly expenses. Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman also criticized the government’s fuel taxation policy. Referring to the petroleum levy, he alleged that the government is effectively collecting money from the public in the form of what he described as “extortion.” He argued that increasing fuel-related taxes has a direct impact on transportation costs, which in turn raises the prices of food, consumer goods, and other essential commodities. As a result, he claimed, inflation continues to place additional pressure on the country’s middle- and lower-income groups. In his statement, the Jamaat-e-Islami chief further alleged that both the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) came to power through what he referred to as “Form 47” This phrase has been used by some political parties in Pakistan to allege irregularities in the electoral process. His remarks reflect his party’s political stance regarding the legitimacy of the current governing coalition. Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman maintained that the country’s leadership should focus on providing relief to the public by reducing electricity prices, reviewing taxation policies, and introducing measures that improve the economic conditions of ordinary citizens. He emphasized that sustainable governance depends on public confidence, transparency, and policies that directly benefit the people. The government has previously defended its economic decisions by stating that measures such as electricity pricing and petroleum levies are necessary to meet fiscal requirements and maintain economic stability. However, opposition parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, continue to argue that these policies have placed excessive financial pressure on the public. The latest remarks by Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman come amid ongoing political debate over Pakistan’s economic challenges, rising inflation, and governance. His statement highlights Jamaat-e-Islami’s continued criticism of the government’s economic policies and its call for greater public relief, while also reiterating the party’s political objections regarding the current administration’s mandate.

Mirwaiz slams demand to end refugee seats in AJK

Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly opposed calls to abolish the reserved legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan, saying the voting rights of displaced Kashmiris are protected by constitutional and democratic principles and must not be undermined. His remarks came after reports that a banned Action Committee had demanded the abolition of seats reserved for refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) legislative framework. The proposal has sparked debate and criticism from political and social circles on both sides of the Line of Control. In a statement, Mirwaiz said millions of Kashmiri refugees residing in Pakistan have a legitimate constitutional and democratic right to participate in the electoral process, adding that these rights cannot be ignored or sacrificed. “The voting rights of Kashmiri refugees are an integral part of their constitutional and democratic rights,” he said, stressing that displaced Kashmiris deserve equal respect, representation and protection. Mirwaiz argued that the rights of refugees are inseparable from the collective rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He maintained that any political movement claiming to represent Kashmiris must ensure equal representation for residents of every region and community without discrimination. He warned that protecting the interests of one group should never come at the cost of another group’s constitutional rights. According to the Hurriyat leader, justice, equality and mutual respect must remain the guiding principles in resolving issues affecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Calling for dialogue, Mirwaiz urged all stakeholders to engage in consultations and meaningful discussions to find a balanced and widely acceptable solution. He said consensus-based decision-making was essential to preserving unity and protecting the democratic rights of all Kashmiris. The statement also criticized attempts to alter the existing representation of Kashmiri refugees, arguing that such moves risk deepening divisions rather than strengthening democratic participation. The controversy over refugee seats has emerged during a politically sensitive period in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with electoral issues drawing increased public attention. While supporters of the proposal argue that reforms are needed, opponents insist that any changes affecting refugee representation must respect constitutional guarantees and the political rights of displaced Kashmiris. Mirwaiz’s intervention adds a prominent voice to the debate, highlighting the need for dialogue and consensus rather than unilateral decisions on issues involving the constitutional and democratic rights of Kashmiri refugees.

Only 170 officials and rising HIV cases push Sindh…

Islamabad / Karachi: The Sindh Healthcare Commission came under intense scrutiny in the Senate after lawmakers questioned its ability to control illegal medical practices and respond effectively to the growing HIV situation in Sindh. Senators raised concerns over delayed action, staff shortages, and legal weaknesses that they said were limiting the Commission’s performance. The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination chaired by Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti. The meeting was attended by Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan, Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Senator Nadeem Ahmed Bhutto, Senator Nasir Mehmood Butt, Senator Anusha Rehman Ahmad Khan through Zoom, Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal and Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani along with senior federal and provincial health officials. Senator Nasir Mehmood Butt questioned why FIRs had still not been registered against those responsible in connection with the HIV situation, while Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan expressed dissatisfaction over delays in action and questioned the role of the Sindh Healthcare Commission in preventing the spread of the disease. Responding to the Committee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sindh Healthcare Commission said the Commission had already registered several FIRs against medical quacks. However, he stated that weaknesses in the existing legal framework allowed many accused to obtain bail shortly after arrest. He informed the Committee that amendments to the law were being prepared to strengthen action against quackery. The CEO also disclosed that the Commission has only around 170 officials serving across the entire province, highlighting a serious shortage of human resources. Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri questioned why the Commission remained understaffed and asked whether the issue had been formally raised with the Sindh Government. Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal requested the Committee Chairman to issue directions so the matter could move forward. Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan stressed that the Government should acknowledge administrative shortcomings wherever they exist. He also asked how many times the Sindh Healthcare Commission had formally requested additional staff from the Provincial Government. The discussion also focused on the governance structure of the Commission. Members were informed that after the 18th Constitutional Amendment, the Sindh Health Department no longer exercises administrative control over the Sindh Healthcare Commission. Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal suggested that legislative measures should be considered to address governance-related issues affecting provincial institutions. The Committee also examined the appointment process for members of the Sindh Healthcare Commission Board. The Secretary Health informed members that the Department did not have the authority to appoint or remove Board members. Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri observed that such limitations weaken accountability, while Senator Nasir Mehmood Butt expressed concern that the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission was not administratively answerable to the Secretary Health. Earlier in the meeting, Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani informed the Committee that two inquiries had been conducted into the Valika Hospital incident, during which 37 officials were identified for disciplinary action. He said the inquiry findings had not been made public due to security considerations but assured the Committee that strict action would be taken against those found responsible. He also informed members that the Sindh Government had established a social security fund to support families affected by HIV.

US House approves $1.15 trillion defense budget package

The US House of Representatives has passed a $1.15 trillion defense budget bill by a narrow vote of 216 to 212. Supported by a majority of Republicans and six Democrats, the legislation includes provisions to deepen defense ties and military technology integration with Israel. The bill faced internal pushback, with Congressman Thomas Massie raising concerns over integrating US military technology and supply chains with Israel. The passage follows a major funding request from the Trump administration, which asked Congress for nearly $87 billion in supplemental appropriations to support ongoing operations against Iran. Appropriations Committee, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that military action against Iran has cost $37.5 billion so far, including projected costs through September 30. Hegseth urged lawmakers to maintain robust military spending, arguing that failing to provide the full defense budget represents the single greatest threat to national security.
