South Korea records highest-ever temperature as extreme heatwave intensifies

South Korea has experienced its hottest day since national weather records began more than 100 years ago, as an intense heatwave continues to grip the country and raise concerns over the growing impact of climate change.

According to reports, the southeastern city of Yangsan recorded a temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius (108.5 degrees Fahrenheit) at 1:26 p.m. local time on Sunday, setting a new national record. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) confirmed that the reading surpassed all previously recorded temperatures since the country began maintaining official weather data more than a century ago.

The latest milestone comes amid a prolonged period of extreme heat across South Korea. Yangsan has now recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) for five consecutive days, highlighting the severity of the current heatwave. Weather officials have warned that the scorching conditions are expected to continue, with temperatures in many parts of the country remaining well above seasonal averages.

Heatwave warnings remain in place across much of South Korea, where daytime temperatures have climbed into the upper 30s Celsius in numerous cities. More than 20 regions were placed under emergency heatwave alerts on Sunday, reflecting the widespread nature of the dangerous weather conditions.

The emergency heatwave warning is the highest level of heat alert introduced by South Korean authorities this year to better respond to increasingly intense summer temperatures. The alert is issued when weather forecasts predict either a perceived temperature of at least 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) or an actual air temperature of 39 degrees Celsius (102.2 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher, even if only for a single day.

Meteorological data also indicates that South Korea has experienced a dramatic rise in the frequency of extreme heat over recent decades. According to the KMA, the average number of annual heatwave days has more than doubled over the past five years, increasing to 19 days compared with an average of just eight days during the 1970s.

The weather agency defines a heatwave day as one in which the highest daytime temperature reaches at least 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 degrees Fahrenheit). It also classifies a tropical night as one in which overnight temperatures remain above 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), preventing residents from receiving relief from the daytime heat.

Climate scientists have repeatedly warned that human-driven climate change is increasing the frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves around the world. Rising global temperatures are contributing to more severe weather events, placing additional pressure on public health systems, infrastructure, agriculture, and energy supplies.South Korea’s record-breaking temperatures come during a year marked by numerous climate-related disasters across the globe. Several countries have experienced devastating droughts, destructive wildfires, severe flooding, and powerful storms, underscoring the growing challenges posed by extreme weather.

Elsewhere, Europe continues to battle its own climate-related emergencies. Wildfires fueled by scorching temperatures and strong winds have spread across parts of Greece, forcing authorities to evacuate residents from threatened communities. Meanwhile, Spain and France remain under hot and dry conditions, increasing the risk of additional wildfires as firefighters remain on high alert.

Experts say the latest record in South Korea serves as another reminder of the urgent need to address climate change and strengthen preparedness for increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather events.

Protest erupts in Washington over Netanyahu visit

WASHINGTON: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington has sparked a fresh wave of protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets to oppose U.S. support for Israel and demand that the Israeli leader be arrested. Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in the U.S. capital carrying Palestinian flags and banners criticising Washington’s backing of Israel. The demonstrations came as Netanyahu arrived in the United States for a scheduled meeting with President Donald Trump. At the heart of the protest was a demand that U.S. authorities enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu. Demonstrators argued that the United States should not provide protection to an Israeli leader facing allegations before the international court. The protest reflects the wider political and public debate in the United States over Washington’s relationship with Israel and its approach to the conflict in Gaza. Trump rules out Netanyahu arrest The demonstrations gained additional attention because Trump has already made his position clear. The U.S. president has said Netanyahu will not be arrested while he is in the United States, directly rejecting calls for his detention. Trump has also strongly defended Israel and Netanyahu in connection with the ongoing regional conflict. Netanyahu’s visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment. His meeting with Trump on Tuesday is the first between the two leaders since their joint war against Iran, with tensions reportedly emerging over how the conflict should be handled. Protest adds pressure ahead of Trump meeting The Washington demonstration adds another layer of political pressure surrounding Netanyahu’s visit. Protesters say U.S. support for Israel should be reconsidered and that international legal proceedings should not be ignored. The issue of Netanyahu’s potential arrest has also become prominent in U.S. politics. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said his administration is examining whether the city could enforce the ICC warrant if Netanyahu visits New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September. For now, however, Trump’s administration has made clear that Netanyahu will not face arrest during his stay in the United States. With protests continuing and the Trump-Netanyahu meeting attracting international attention, the visit is likely to keep the debate over Gaza, U.S.-Israel relations and international accountability firmly in the spotlight.

France tightens borders after deadly Ceuta migrant crisis

France has strengthened security checks along its border with Spain following the recent migrant influx into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced on Tuesday. The enhanced border measures were introduced over the weekend on the instructions of French President Emmanuel Macron after tens of thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco over two days, triggering one of the region’s largest migration emergencies in recent years. Spanish authorities said the vast majority of migrants who entered the enclave had already been returned to Morocco. Officials also confirmed that at least 75 people died while attempting the dangerous crossing, highlighting the human cost of the crisis. Speaking after an emergency video conference with European interior ministers, Laurent Nunez said European Union member states had unanimously expressed solidarity with Spain and pledged support in managing the situation. He said France remained ready to provide additional assistance through Frontex, the EU’s border management agency, if required. The French minister noted that Ceuta operates under special rules within the Schengen Area and stressed that strict border controls had prevented the migration crisis from spreading to mainland Europe. Nunez also praised the cooperation between Spain and Morocco in responding to the situation, saying close coordination between the two countries had been vital in managing the large-scale arrivals. Rejecting calls from some political groups in France to suspend Spain from the Schengen free-movement zone, he said EU member states agreed that the Schengen system remained part of the solution rather than the cause of the crisis. He emphasized that the Schengen Area had not been threatened despite the surge in migration and reaffirmed France’s commitment to coordinated European efforts to address irregular migration.

British serial attacker gets whole life term for t…

A London court sentenced a serial sex offender to spend the rest of his life in prison on Wednesday, following his conviction for two murders and a rape carried out during an escalating pattern of sexual violence that police and prosecutors repeatedly failed to stop. Simon Levy, 40, was found guilty last week of murdering Carmenza Valencia Trujillo in March 2025 and Sheryl Wilkins in August 2025, along with raping and seriously assaulting a third woman in January of that year. Police had arrested Levy multiple times over sexual assaults against women on crowded commuter trains before eventually detaining him on suspicion of killing 53 year old Valencia Trujillo in April 2025. Authorities released him after that arrest, and he went on to sexually assault five more women before killing 39 year old Wilkins in a violent attack. London’s Metropolitan Police said officers released Levy at the time because they could not confirm whether a third party had been involved in Valencia Trujillo’s death. Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters the force “could have done better, definitely,” while also arguing that the broader justice system needs to perform more effectively. The case, along with the string of institutional failures that allowed Levy to keep offending, has drawn sharp criticism, coming months after a report published in December warned that British police must intervene earlier when dealing with predatory behavior patterns. Harriet Wistrich, chief executive of the Centre for Women’s Justice, said the combination of failures documented in this case offers alarming evidence that the criminal justice system is breaking down. Judge Mark Lucraft described Levy during sentencing as someone who ruthlessly exploits others to satisfy his own sexual desires, handing down a whole life order for the murders of both Valencia Trujillo and Wilkins. Levy was also sentenced for two counts of rape, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and intentional strangulation connected to the case involving the third woman. Separately, Levy was convicted in February of sexually assaulting ten women aboard London trains between October 2023 and May 2025, including six attacks that occurred in early 2025, along with an eleventh charge involving the sexual assault of a prison officer in April 2022. British Transport Police arrested Levy on separate occasions in 2024 and early 2025, including once when he became a suspect in the rape case and in Valencia Trujillo’s murder, but he was granted bail each time. The Metropolitan Police has referred itself to the police watchdog over its 2024 decision to downgrade Levy to a medium risk offender, while British Transport Police and the Crown Prosecution Service have also acknowledged shortcomings in how they handled the case. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement that he was appalled both by Levy’s crimes and by the failures across multiple agencies that allowed them to continue, calling for a multi agency review aimed at preventing similar failures in the future.

Trump jokes about Leavitt choosing her children over him as she Prepares to leave White House role

US President Donald Trump has reacted to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s decision to leave her position with a light-hearted remark about her choice to spend more time with her young children. During an interview correspondent Alexis McAdams, Trump was asked about the possibility of finding a replacement for Leavitt. The president spoke positively about her work and described her performance as highly successful. Trump praised Leavitt for doing a “great job” as press secretary but then made a joke about her priorities. He said he was “very concerned” after learning that Leavitt apparently liked spending time with her children more than being around him. The comment was made in a humorous tone, but it quickly attracted attention because Leavitt’s decision to leave the White House is closely connected to her family responsibilities. Leavitt announced last week that she planned to step down from the position at the end of August. She explained that her decision was motivated by a desire to dedicate more time to her young family. Her departure marks a significant change for the White House communications team. As press secretary, Leavitt has been one of the administration’s most visible representatives, regularly appearing before reporters and defending the president’s policies. Trump has repeatedly praised Leavitt and described her as one of the strongest press secretaries he has worked with. Although she is leaving her official position, Trump has indicated that he wants her to remain connected to his administration. According to the president, Leavitt will continue to contribute as an outside adviser after stepping down. This would allow her to maintain a relationship with the administration while giving her greater flexibility to focus on her family. During the same interview, Trump also appeared to raise the possibility of Alexis McAdams becoming Leavitt’s successor. Addressing the Fox News correspondent directly, he asked whether she would be interested in taking over the White House briefing room podium. McAdams has experience covering the Trump administration and frequently reports on political developments. Trump’s question therefore prompted speculation about whether she could be considered for the position, although it was not clear whether his comments represented a serious proposal or another informal remark during the interview. The exchange quickly spread across social media and generated mixed reactions. Some viewers interpreted Trump’s comments about Leavitt as typical of his joking and informal style. Supporters viewed the remark as a humorous way of acknowledging the importance of family in Leavitt’s decision. Others, however, were critical of the joke. They argued that Leavitt’s choice to step away from one of the most demanding political communications jobs in Washington in order to spend more time with her children should be treated seriously rather than used as the subject of a public punchline. Leavitt’s departure also highlights the challenges faced by high-profile officials who attempt to balance demanding political careers with family life. The White House press secretary position requires frequent public appearances, media briefings, travel and long working hours, making it particularly demanding for anyone with young children. Despite the joking tone of Trump’s comments, his praise for Leavitt made clear that he considers her contribution to the administration valuable. His decision to retain her as an outside adviser suggests that he wants to continue benefiting from her experience and communication skills. The White House is now expected to determine who will take over the daily briefing role once Leavitt leaves at the end of August. Until then, attention will remain focused on her final weeks as press secretary and on who may eventually step behind the White House briefing room podium.
