France tightens borders after deadly Ceuta migrant crisis

France has strengthened security checks along its border with Spain following the recent migrant influx into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced on Tuesday.

The enhanced border measures were introduced over the weekend on the instructions of French President Emmanuel Macron after tens of thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco over two days, triggering one of the region’s largest migration emergencies in recent years.

Spanish authorities said the vast majority of migrants who entered the enclave had already been returned to Morocco. Officials also confirmed that at least 75 people died while attempting the dangerous crossing, highlighting the human cost of the crisis.

Speaking after an emergency video conference with European interior ministers, Laurent Nunez said European Union member states had unanimously expressed solidarity with Spain and pledged support in managing the situation.

He said France remained ready to provide additional assistance through Frontex, the EU’s border management agency, if required.

The French minister noted that Ceuta operates under special rules within the Schengen Area and stressed that strict border controls had prevented the migration crisis from spreading to mainland Europe.

Nunez also praised the cooperation between Spain and Morocco in responding to the situation, saying close coordination between the two countries had been vital in managing the large-scale arrivals.

Rejecting calls from some political groups in France to suspend Spain from the Schengen free-movement zone, he said EU member states agreed that the Schengen system remained part of the solution rather than the cause of the crisis.

He emphasized that the Schengen Area had not been threatened despite the surge in migration and reaffirmed France’s commitment to coordinated European efforts to address irregular migration.

Philipps recalled that she did not have typical symptoms associated with a brain tumour, such as seizures. She simply felt that something was telling her to get the scan. The examination eventually revealed a mass measuring around 2.6 centimetres in her brain. Doctors diagnosed her with a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare and slow-growing type of brain tumour. Although the tumour is classified as malignant because of its potential to return over time, her medical team explained that this type has one of the more favourable prognoses among malignant gliomas. Early detection also allowed doctors to act before the condition became more serious. Following the diagnosis, Philipps underwent a major operation on March 2 to remove the tumour. She later faced another serious setback when a staphylococcus infection developed at the surgical site. The complication required a second operation to treat the infection and clean the affected area. The actress has described the entire experience as physically and emotionally overwhelming. During her initial conversation with her doctor, Philipps even managed to bring some humour into the frightening situation. She asked how quickly she could return to work after surgery and jokingly wondered whether her doctor could perform a brow lift while removing the mass from her frontal lobe. Despite everything she went through, Philipps was able to return to work after her recovery. She is continuing to undergo regular medical scans so doctors can monitor her condition and check for any possible recurrence. At present, she does not need chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Philipps has also spoken about the importance of listening to one’s instincts and being willing to seek medical answers even when something does not appear obviously wrong. Her decision to proceed with the scan ultimately led to the discovery of a tumour she did not know was there.     SC clears hurdle in Imran hospital plea

    An objection raised by the Supreme Court registrar’s office against a contempt of court petition filed by PTI founder Imran Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, has been removed. The petition was filed in connection with Imran Khan’s proposed transfer to a hospital for medical treatment. Uzma Khan has sought contempt proceedings against the government and named Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Information Minister Atta Tarar, among others, as respondents. The petition also calls for Imran Khan to be shifted to Shifa Hospital for treatment and for his medical tests to be conducted. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja had visited the Supreme Court on Monday in connection with the petition. They sought to have the case fixed for an early hearing. Earlier, the Supreme Court registrar’s office had returned the petition after raising an objection. According to sources, the registrar’s objection stated that the petition did not include a list of the allegations of contempt levelled against the respondents. The PTI subsequently addressed the objection and resubmitted the petition to the Supreme Court. The registrar’s office has now accepted the amended filing and allotted a registration number to the contempt petition. Uzma Khan’s petition has been registered as Contempt Petition No. 8/2026. The development clears the procedural hurdle that had previously prevented the petition from moving forward. The petition seeks judicial intervention over the treatment and medical care of Imran Khan and alleges non-compliance with the court’s directions concerning his hospital transfer.

    The Muttahida Madaris Council Pakistan has publicly distanced itself from recent remarks made by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the Pakistan Army and the country’s martyrs. In an official statement, the council said religious seminaries across Pakistan have always stood with the country’s armed forces and fully respect the sacrifices made by military personnel in defending the nation. It stressed that no seminary or religious educational institution supports any narrative that could be interpreted as being against the armed forces. The council reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and expressed solidarity with Pakistan’s security institutions. It also paid tribute to the country’s martyrs, saying their sacrifices for national security and peace deserve the highest respect. The controversy began after Fazlur Rehman addressed a public gathering in Kasur, where he spoke about the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. During his speech, his comments about soldiers and martyrdom sparked widespread criticism from political leaders and members of the public. Several politicians described the remarks as inappropriate and called on the JUI-F chief to publicly clarify or withdraw his statement. They maintained that the sacrifices of soldiers should not become part of political debate and should always be treated with respect. Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan strongly criticised the remarks and urged Fazlur Rehman to issue a public apology. He also proposed the formation of a Senate committee to examine the issue and determine whether the veteran politician should be formally called to explain his comments. The matter has also entered the legal arena. A sessions court has issued a notice to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) regarding the registration of a cybercrime case linked to the controversial remarks. The agency is expected to submit its response during the legal proceedings. The controversy has continued to dominate political discussions, with leaders from different parties expressing contrasting views over the issue.     Imran’s sister allowed to meet him at Adiala

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sister Noreen Niazi was allowed to proceed to Adiala Jail on Tuesday to meet him after the Supreme Court directed authorities to facilitate family meetings. Noreen, along with Imran’s sisters Aleema Khan and Dr Uzma Khanum, reached the Dahgal checkpoint on the road leading to the prison. Police initially stopped all three women but later allowed Noreen to continue towards the jail. The development came shortly after a three-member Supreme Court bench ordered weekly meetings between Imran and his family. The court was hearing petitions concerning his access to relatives and personal physicians, as well as his medical condition. Noreen told reporters before leaving for the prison that she would inform Imran about the Supreme Court’s decision and the efforts made by his supporters. She did not respond when asked whether she would speak to the media after the meeting. Separately, Bushra Bibi’s daughter and sister-in-law were also permitted to meet her at Adiala Jail. The meeting was attended by Musarrat Khawar Maneka and Mehrunnisa, according to jail officials. The Supreme Court’s decision followed medical reports raising concerns about Imran’s fluctuating blood pressure, anxiety and other symptoms. The court said family access should not be treated as a favour and directed authorities to facilitate regular meetings. The court also ordered Imran’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital for treatment. A medical board comprising an eye specialist, general physician and cardiologist will examine him, while his personal physician Dr Faisal Sultan will also be given access. His sister Dr Uzma is to be associated with the medical board. PTI representatives have agreed to comply with the court’s condition that political activity and media statements should not be conducted after meetings with Imran. Speaking at the Dahgal checkpoint, Aleema Khan welcomed the court’s decision and said the family had been demanding Imran’s hospital treatment for months. She also confirmed that Noreen had been allowed to meet him. Aleema rejected allegations that the family was using Imran’s health for political purposes. She said they were raising concerns as his sisters and seeking what they considered to be his legal rights. She further argued that Bushra Bibi should also have received similar relief. According to Aleema, the family had already given its commitment before the Supreme Court that it would not gather outside the prison or hospital and address the media following meetings. Imran’s spokesperson Niazullah Khan Niazi said the PTI founder had a right to meet his family regularly. He welcomed the Supreme Court’s directions and said the party would fully comply with the restrictions imposed by the court. The Supreme Court also directed authorities to arrange telephone communication between Imran and his children and ordered that his medical records remain confidential. The latest medical report submitted to the court stated that Imran had experienced fluctuating blood pressure, palpitations, headaches, restlessness and anxiety. A cardiologist who examined him earlier this month recommended measures to reduce stress, including increased family interaction. A four-member medical board later recorded his blood pressure at 140/80mmHg and recommended walking, relaxation and more frequent interaction with his immediate family and wife. The report said Imran had undergone dozens of medical examinations since his imprisonment and was being monitored regularly by jail medical staff. It also stated that his ECG was normal and that his eyesight had improved following treatment. PTI has questioned the adequacy of the medical reports and continued to demand examinations by Imran’s personal physicians and an independent medical board. The government, however, has rejected allegations that Imran is being denied medical treatment. Government officials have maintained that he is receiving healthcare from qualified specialists and that prison meetings are being conducted according to court orders and applicable law. Imran and Bushra Bibi remain incarcerated at Adiala Jail. The former prime minister has been in custody since August 2023 and is also facing several legal cases.
