China unveils hyper-realistic robotic head

Although companies around the world—particularly in China—are making rapid progress in developing humanoid robots capable of walking, moving, and interacting like humans, creating robotic faces that display truly lifelike expressions has remained one of the biggest challenges in robotics. Engineers have long struggled to replicate the subtle emotions and facial movements that make human communication so natural.

A Chinese startup is now attempting to bridge that gap by introducing a highly realistic robotic head that closely resembles a human face in both appearance and expression. The innovation represents a significant step toward narrowing the divide between humans and machines.

The company behind the project, AgiBot Farm, was founded in 2024 by Yuhang Hu, an engineer from Columbia University. Its latest creation, the Origin M1, is an advanced robotic head designed to reproduce a wide range of human facial expressions with remarkable precision.

Unlike conventional robots that often appear stiff or expressionless, the Origin M1 can imitate subtle facial movements that are essential to human interaction. These include raising or furrowing the eyebrows, producing a gentle smile, moving the eyes naturally, and displaying other delicate expressions that convey emotions. Such realistic facial behavior makes conversations with the robot feel more natural and engaging.

Beneath its lifelike silicone skin lies an intricate mechanical system powered by 25 to 42 ultra-quiet micro motors, depending on the model. These miniature motors function similarly to human facial muscles, expanding and contracting in coordinated patterns to create highly accurate facial movements. This sophisticated design allows the robot to produce smooth and realistic expressions instead of the rigid movements commonly associated with traditional robots.

The robot’s eyes are equally advanced. Hidden within its pupils are tiny cameras that enable it to observe and analyze its surroundings. These cameras help the robot detect objects, monitor movement, and better understand the environment, allowing it to respond more intelligently during interactions.

To further enhance communication, the Origin M1 is equipped with built-in microphones and speakers. These components allow the robot to hear human voices, process spoken language, and engage in conversations. This combination of vision, hearing, and expressive facial movements brings the robot much closer to human-like communication than previous generations of humanoid technology.

However, such cutting-edge innovation comes at a premium price. The most advanced version of the Origin M1 is currently available for approximately US$150,000, making it suitable primarily for research institutions, technology companies, and specialized industrial applications rather than everyday consumers.

Looking ahead, AgiBot Farm plans to make the robot even more intelligent by integrating lip-sync technology and large language models (LLMs). These upgrades will enable the robot not only to understand spoken language more effectively but also to generate facial expressions that match the tone, emotion, and context of a conversation. As a result, future versions of the Origin M1 could communicate in a way that feels increasingly natural, empathetic, and human.

The development of robots like the Origin M1 highlights the rapid pace of artificial intelligence and robotics. As these technologies continue to evolve, experts believe that highly expressive humanoid robots could eventually play important roles in healthcare, education, customer service, research, and companionship, bringing humans and machines closer together than ever before.

    FO rejects India’s criticism of AJK elections

    Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) has strongly rejected India’s criticism of the ongoing Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) legislative elections, saying New Delhi has neither the legal standing nor the moral authority to question the democratic process in the region. Speaking at the weekly media briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi dismissed remarks made by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which had described the AJK elections as a “farce.” He termed India’s comments baseless, politically motivated and an attempt to undermine a democratic process being conducted under the constitutional and legal framework of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Andrabi said the elections are taking place in a peaceful, transparent and orderly manner despite security challenges, reflecting the democratic aspirations and political will of the people of AJK. He added that Pakistan remains committed to ensuring a free and fair electoral process in the region. The spokesperson said India’s criticism comes as the seventh anniversary of New Delhi’s August 5, 2019 decision to revoke the special constitutional status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) is being observed. He maintained that those unilateral measures violated international law, relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and India’s own international commitments. He reiterated Pakistan’s position that Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognised disputed territory, whose final status should be determined through a UN-supervised plebiscite in accordance with relevant UNSC resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. Andrabi also accused India of attempting to divert global attention from alleged human rights violations and restrictions on political freedoms in occupied Kashmir. He said references to casualty figures and other claims made by Indian authorities cannot overshadow concerns raised by the international community over the situation in the region. Responding to another question regarding India’s reaction to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent remarks on Youm-e-Istehsal, Andrabi described the Indian statement as an effort to justify its policies in occupied Kashmir. He alleged that a heavy military presence, strict security laws and demographic changes continue to affect the Muslim-majority character of the territory.     KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) and modern technology into the recruitment and examination system of the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC). The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah on Tuesday. The chairman of the SPSC, the secretary of information technology and other senior officials attended the meeting. During the meeting, the chief secretary said AI and modern technology would be used to make the SPSC examination process more efficient and transparent. Officials discussed the use of technology in several stages of the examination process. This includes the preparation of question papers, assessment of candidates and management of examination-related data. The new system is also expected to reduce unnecessary human involvement in certain stages of the examination process. Officials believe greater use of technology could help improve efficiency and minimise administrative delays. The Sindh government also plans to establish technology-equipped workstations across the province. These facilities will provide candidates in different areas with access to modern examination services. The initiative is aimed at improving accessibility for applicants from various parts of Sindh. The government said the use of AI and digital tools would help modernise the recruitment process and improve the overall management of SPSC examinations.

These programmes have particularly targeted areas where young people have fewer opportunities to access modern technology, professional education, career guidance and exposure to the digital industry. The training initiatives have focused on practical and market-oriented skills that can help young people become financially independent and participate in the growing digital economy.
