PM Shehbaz orders audit of Discos’ billing s…

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed a comprehensive technical audit of the billing systems of electricity distribution companies (Discos), reaffirming that reforming Pakistan’s power sector remains one of the government’s top priorities.

Chairing a high-level meeting on the performance of the Power Division, the prime minister acknowledged that distribution companies had shown noticeable improvement but stressed that further reforms were essential to enhance efficiency and service delivery. He described the nationwide installation of smart electricity meters as a key step toward modernising the sector and improving transparency.

Shehbaz Sharif also called for strict action against electricity theft, instructing authorities to strengthen enforcement mechanisms at every level. He ordered the Power Division to establish clear performance benchmarks for distribution companies, supported by measurable targets and specific implementation timelines.

To encourage better performance, the prime minister announced that the country’s best-performing distribution company would receive formal recognition and awards, promoting healthy competition among power utilities.

Addressing the issue of prolonged electricity shortages in rural areas, he directed officials to prepare village-level solarisation projects, saying decentralised solar energy systems could reduce pressure on the national electricity grid while improving access to reliable power.

During the meeting, officials informed the prime minister that technical and commercial losses across distribution companies had continued to decline. Islamabad, Lahore and Gujranwala electricity companies recorded the lowest transmission and distribution losses during the last fiscal year, while power utilities in Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Multan achieved full recovery of billed electricity dues in the 2025–26 fiscal year.

The meeting was also told that specialised Disco Support Units have been established in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Lahore, Multan and Hazara to combat electricity theft, improve bill recovery and resolve technical challenges more effectively.

Officials further briefed the prime minister that the first phase of the Asset Performance Management System (APMS) at the transformer level is expected to be completed by the end of September. The system is designed to improve monitoring of transformers, helping reduce both power theft and load-shedding.

In addition, the government is considering the installation of 16.2 million Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) single-phase smart meters across the Multan, Lahore, Peshawar, Hazara and Quetta regions as part of its broader strategy to modernise Pakistan’s electricity distribution network.

Hobbit Heroes reunite for dinner in Cambridge

Nearly two decades after The Lord of the Rings trilogy brought them together on screen, four of Middle-earth’s most beloved hobbits have reunited for an evening of food, drinks and friendship. Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who famously portrayed Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, respectively, gathered at La Royal restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on August 8. The longtime friends spent the evening enjoying dinner, drinks and lively conversation, giving fans another glimpse of the enduring bond formed during the making of Peter Jackson’s acclaimed fantasy trilogy. Astin shared a selfie from the gathering on social media, writing, “The band’s all here,” alongside a photo of the four actors. Monaghan also documented the reunion, jokingly captioning his own post: “Four Halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation!” The playful posts quickly delighted fans, many of whom have continued to follow the actors’ friendship long after the final chapter of the original trilogy reached theaters. Their regular reunions have become a nostalgic reminder of the close relationships that developed behind the scenes while filming The Lord of the Rings. The quartet last appeared together as their iconic characters in 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the Oscar-winning conclusion to Jackson’s trilogy. The film became a landmark in modern cinema and cemented Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin as some of fantasy’s most recognizable characters. The reunion also arrives as excitement continues to build around the wider Lord of the Rings universe. Wood is set to return to Middle-earth as Frodo in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, once again connecting him with the franchise that transformed his career. For fans, however, the Cambridge dinner was about more than a famous film series. The photographs offered a warm glimpse of four actors whose friendship has endured long after their journey through Middle-earth ended. From the Shire to Cambridge, the hobbits may have left the screen years ago, but their friendship clearly remains an adventure worth celebrating. https://www.instagram.com/p/DbxAfQKp3RN/?igsh=ZzdnOHNuYXI4cDEy

UN General Assembly extends rights chief’s term despite US objections

The United Nations General Assembly has voted by a large majority to grant UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk a second four-year term, despite strong opposition from the United States, Russia and Israel. The decision came after member states rejected calls to delay the vote and instead backed Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ recommendation to keep Turk in office when his current term expires in October. The 193-member General Assembly approved the extension with 144 countries voting in favor, while 10 countries voted against the proposal and 13 abstained. Before the final vote, member states also rejected a Russian proposal that would have extended Turk’s mandate only until the end of 2026 instead of giving him another full term. Turk has become one of the UN’s most outspoken voices on global human rights issues during his first term. He has repeatedly criticized Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and raised concerns over Israel’s conduct during the conflict in Gaza. He has also called for investigations into deaths that occurred in US immigration detention facilities. His willingness to publicly challenge major world powers has drawn criticism from several governments, including Washington, Moscow and Tel Aviv. The vote reflected growing tensions between the United States and the United Nations under President Donald Trump’s administration. In recent years, Washington has reduced financial support for several UN agencies and withdrawn from multiple international bodies. The administration has argued that reforms are needed before the United States continues its current level of participation and funding. Before the vote, the United States urged the General Assembly to postpone the decision for further consultations. US Representative for UN Management and Reform Jeff Bartos warned member states that approving the appointment without additional debate would damage the organization’s credibility. He said the United States would review its future engagement, participation and financial contributions if the assembly ignored its concerns. The US State Department also criticized the process before the vote, describing it as rushed and lacking sufficient discussion among member countries. Officials argued that member states should have been given more time to examine the proposal before making a final decision. Despite those objections, a broad coalition of countries supported Turk’s reappointment. The European Union strongly backed the extension, along with many African and Latin American nations. China also voted in favor of the proposal, helping secure the overwhelming majority needed for approval. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres nominated Turk for a second term after working closely with him for several years. Guterres, who is due to leave office in December, praised Turk’s experience and commitment to defending human rights around the world. Turk, an Austrian lawyer, has spent decades working within the United Nations in senior positions based in Geneva as well as field assignments, including Kosovo. With the latest vote, he will become the first UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to serve two full four-year terms since the position was established in 1993. Human Rights Watch welcomed the decision, arguing that strong and independent leadership is needed at a time when democratic freedoms are facing increasing pressure in many parts of the world. The organization’s UN director, Louis Charbonneau, said the global human rights situation requires a commissioner willing to challenge powerful governments regardless of their influence. Russia and Israel strongly criticized the outcome after the vote. Russia’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations accused Turk of showing political bias and making unfair allegations against Moscow. Israeli officials also condemned the decision, describing it as a mistake and arguing that the appointment should have been left to the next UN secretary general rather than being decided during Guterres’ final months in office. The result highlights the continuing divisions within the United Nations over human rights issues and the organization’s relationship with some of its most influential member states. While a large majority of countries supported Turk’s leadership, the objections raised by the United States, Russia and Israel suggest that debates over the UN’s role and future direction are likely to continue throughout his second term.
