Arjumand Rahim opens up about anxiety and multiple ER visits

Arjumand Rahim is one of Pakistani television’s most enduring and respected performers. She began her career in the 1990s and has built a body of work that spans three decades, evolving alongside the industry itself and consistently delivering performances that leave a mark. Her recent role in Sher reminded audiences precisely what she is capable of, earning widespread praise and reinforcing her standing as one of the finest actors of her generation. Away from the screen, however, she has been quietly navigating a health struggle that was far more frightening than anything she has portrayed on camera.
Appearing as a guest on Vasay Chaudhary’s show, Arjumand spoke with remarkable candour about a period in her life when she repeatedly found herself in the emergency room with no clear explanation for what was happening to her body. She described feeling faint and physically unwell on multiple occasions, with each ER visit leaving her more shaken than the last. Adding to her fear was a deeply personal detail: her father had passed away due to cardiac arrest, and the physical symptoms she was experiencing brought that grief rushing back in the most frightening way possible. Every episode of faintness or discomfort carried the shadow of that loss.
It was only when she received a proper diagnosis that the picture began to make sense. She was found to be suffering from extreme anxiety and depression, conditions that had been manifesting through very real and alarming physical symptoms. For someone who had not understood what was happening to her, the diagnosis, while difficult to hear, was also the beginning of clarity. She sought professional help, underwent therapy, and received the treatment she needed to begin recovering.
She described the period before the diagnosis as truly frightening, a time when she did not know what was wrong with her and could not explain what her body was doing or why. The uncertainty, layered on top of grief and the physical toll of the episodes themselves, made for an extraordinarily difficult stretch of time.
The good news, and she was clear about this, is that she is doing significantly better now. The treatment worked, and the willingness to seek help made the difference.
Her decision to speak openly about what she went through carries weight beyond her own story. In Pakistan, conversations around mental health and its physical manifestations remain challenging, and the stigma surrounding anxiety, depression and therapy continues to prevent many people from reaching out. When a figure of Arjumand Rahim’s stature speaks plainly about her own diagnosis and her experience of getting treatment, it sends a message that reaching for help is not weakness but the beginning of getting better. That is a message worth hearing.

Pakistan stands with Nepal after broad peak avalan…

Pakistan has expressed solidarity with Nepal following the tragic avalanche on Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountain range, where members of an international mountaineering expedition were caught in a deadly snow slide. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Inter-Provincial Coordination, Senator Rana Sanaullah, said Pakistan shares the grief of the Nepalese people and remains committed to supporting rescue efforts. According to Rana Sanaullah, the avalanche struck a team of 10 international climbers attempting to scale Broad Peak. The expedition included six climbers from Nepal, along with mountaineers from Pakistan, the United States, China, and Oman. He said the Government of Pakistan immediately prioritized search and rescue operations after the incident. So far, the bodies of four climbers have been recovered, including Nepalese mountaineer Pur Bahadur Gurung. Rescue teams continue to search for the remaining missing climbers despite difficult terrain and severe weather conditions. Rana Sanaullah stated that the Pakistan Army and other relevant agencies are carrying out extensive rescue operations using helicopters, drones, and all available resources. He noted that challenging weather and the remote mountainous landscape have made rescue efforts extremely difficult, but authorities remain fully committed to locating the missing climbers. The adviser explained that search teams are utilizing GPS tracking, aerial surveillance, and ground search missions to maximize the chances of finding those still unaccounted for. He emphasized that rescue operations will continue without interruption until every possible effort has been exhausted. Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, Rana Sanaullah said Nepalese climbers, along with other international mountaineers, are highly respected in Pakistan for their contributions to global mountaineering. He added that Pakistan values its long-standing friendship with Nepal and stands with the families affected by the tragedy during this difficult time. He further reaffirmed that the government will continue to deploy all available resources until the search mission is completed. Pakistan, he said, remains committed to assisting the international climbing community and ensuring that every effort is made to locate the missing members of the expedition. The Broad Peak avalanche has once again highlighted the dangers of high-altitude mountaineering in the Karakoram, where unpredictable weather, avalanches, and challenging terrain continue to pose significant risks even to experienced climbers. Authorities have pledged to maintain rescue operations while closely monitoring weather conditions to ensure the safety of rescue personnel.

UK cancels military training exercise in Kenya amid legal jurisdiction and funding dispute

The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been forced to cancel a major military training exercise in Kenya after the Kenyan government refused to ratify a renewed bilateral defence agreement. The decision follows a stalemate between London and Nairobi regarding the framework governing the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK). Kenyan lawmakers have demanded key structural revisions to the pact, including greater local authority and primary jurisdiction to prosecute British soldiers who commit criminal offences on Kenyan soil. Disagreements over the financial compensation Britain pays to host its training operations in Laikipia have also stalled negotiations. As a direct consequence of the expired permits, a scheduled exercise involving the 1st Battalion, the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, set to begin in September, has been called off, with the MoD relocating the drills to an alternative site outside Kenya. The diplomatic standoff comes amid escalating domestic pressure in Kenya over alleged human rights violations, environmental damage, and misconduct associated with BATUK operations. Scrutiny has particularly intensified around the high-profile 2012 murder of Agnes Wanjiru. A former British soldier, Robert Purkiss, faces a single charge of murder in the case, with Kenya retaining jurisdiction and an extradition hearing scheduled for November. While both governments maintain that they are actively engaging to resolve the outstanding legal and financial issues, the training suspension deals a immediate blow to local businesses in Laikipia that depend on the economic activity generated by visiting British troops.
