Eight-year-old girl allegedly raped in Gujranwala, public outraged

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to a brutal sexual assault by unidentified perpetrators in the Gujranwala area, triggering widespread grief and anger across Pakistan. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of children and the growing number of violent crimes being reported across the country.

According to reports, the incident took place in Feroze Wala Kala Khatai Gol Pind near Gujranwala. The minor was allegedly taken to nearby fields, where she was sexually assaulted by multiple suspects. Her cries for help alerted local residents, who rushed towards the area and intervened.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify and arrest those responsible. The victim was later taken to a police station in critical condition. Reports said that she was in severe distress and was unable to sit comfortably following the alleged assault.

The incident has also sparked criticism of the media after the child’s father appeared before news outlets while attempting to conceal his daughter’s face. Despite the family’s efforts to protect the minor’s identity, reports claimed that some media channels broadcast footage showing the child’s face without blurring it. The decision has drawn condemnation from members of the public and celebrities, who argued that protecting the privacy and dignity of a minor victim should be a basic responsibility of the media.

Actress Amar Khan expressed her anger over the alleged assault as well as the media’s handling of the victim’s identity. She criticised the decision to broadcast the child’s unblurred face, calling attention to the ethical responsibilities of news organisations when reporting cases involving minors.

Maya Khan also reacted emotionally to the incident, urging people to take action against such cruelty. She wrote, “Please do something before Allah reacts to this cruelty and punishes us.”

Malik Aqeel was also among those who expressed grief over the disturbing case.

The incident has prompted another wave of public outrage on social media, with many users demanding strict action against those responsible. Several commentators questioned whether parents can feel safe raising daughters when children continue to face such horrific violence.

Some users called for stronger punishments for perpetrators of crimes against children, while others expressed frustration over what they described as repeated failures to protect vulnerable minors. Many social media users also tagged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, urging authorities to ensure a swift investigation and bring the suspects to justice.

The alleged assault comes amid growing public concern over reports of rape, murder, kidnapping and other violent crimes across Pakistan. Recent cases involving children and other vulnerable victims have intensified demands for stronger law enforcement, better protection for minors and greater accountability.

As the investigation continues, the public is awaiting concrete action against those responsible for the Gujranwala incident. The case has once again highlighted the urgent need to protect children from violence and ensure that victims are treated with dignity and privacy throughout the legal process.

Iran rejects talks on ceasefire extension

Pakistan is making diplomatic efforts to help extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as the current truce is scheduled to expire on Sunday, August 16. Sources said Islamabad is trying to use the understanding reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding to encourage both sides to maintain the ceasefire and return to negotiations. According to the sources, mediators believe additional time is needed to bridge differences between Washington and Tehran. Diplomatic efforts are therefore continuing to prevent the situation from deteriorating after the current ceasefire period ends. However, an Iranian senior official gave a different assessment of the situation. The official said there have been no discussions between Iran and the United States regarding an extension of the ceasefire. Iran has maintained that Washington must return to the agreement and honour its previous commitments. Tehran has also demanded a clear and credible timeline for the implementation of those commitments before any further understanding can be reached. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has made strong statements about the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Trump claimed that the United States now has complete control over the vital waterway and said Iran has limited options to challenge the American naval blockade. The Strait of Hormuz remains a major international shipping route and plays a crucial role in global energy supplies. Any prolonged disruption in the waterway could have serious consequences for oil and gas markets and international trade. Iranian military officials have warned that a renewed US offensive could lead to a wider confrontation. An Iranian military spokesman said energy transmission networks, power plants and infrastructure connected to the global internet could become targets if American military action resumes. The warning has raised concerns that any collapse of the ceasefire could expand the conflict beyond conventional military targets and affect critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed hope that additional countries will join the Makkah Defence Agreement. He indicated that broader participation could strengthen regional security cooperation. In another development, US Central Command said a Panama-flagged cargo vessel attempting to breach the naval blockade was disabled after a US helicopter fired a missile at the ship. The incident has further highlighted the risks facing commercial shipping in the region amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Separately, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi discussed the situation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in a telephone conversation. Takaichi called for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened once negotiations between Iran and the United States reach a successful conclusion.

Millions flock to Spain, Iceland for rare total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse is set to darken skies across parts of Europe on August 12, drawing millions of travellers to witness the rare event. Spain and Iceland have emerged as the top destinations for eclipse chasers this week. This marks the first time the path of totality has crossed mainland Europe since August 1999. The rarity of a total eclipse passing over such densely populated regions has sparked massive international interest. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have been flocking to Spain to experience the celestial event alongside local residents. What makes Spain’s viewing especially unique is that totality will occur just before sunset, with the Sun hanging low on the western horizon. As a result, millions across northern Spain, Zaragoza and the Balearic Islands will witness a dramatic “sunset eclipse”. This will mark the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in more than a century. Spain’s Secretary of State for Science, Juan Cruz, expressed excitement over the milestone. He said he hopes the event inspires a new generation of astrophysicists, calling it a genuinely special moment for the country. Spanish authorities are preparing for roughly six million visitors travelling across the eclipse’s path. The scale of anticipated tourism reflects just how rare and significant this celestial event is considered. Iceland has also been swept up in the excitement, expecting around 80,000 visitors for the occasion. The path of totality will stretch across western Iceland and eastern Greenland, offering viewers a dramatic backdrop of rugged fjords under late-afternoon Arctic light. Visitors along Iceland’s westernmost coast will experience totality at 5:44 pm local time, as the Moon’s shadow moves steadily eastward. Those in the far western regions will see totality last up to two minutes and 13 seconds, while other areas will experience a shorter period of darkness. NASA is also playing a role in the event, deploying a high-altitude WB-57 aircraft from Iceland to track the Moon’s shadow. Additional NASA-funded teams will launch specialised weather balloons to study how the sudden darkness and cooling affects the lower atmosphere. With millions gathered across two very different landscapes, this eclipse is shaping up to be one of the most significant astronomical events of the decade.

Abu Dhabi Police warn residents about rise in salary day online scams

Abu Dhabi Police have warned residents to stay alert as cybercriminals increase online fraud attempts around monthly salary payment periods. Officials said scammers often take advantage of the time when many people receive their salaries by using fake offers and deceptive schemes to steal money, banking details, and personal information. According to the police, fraudsters are creating fake promotions, counterfeit websites, and misleading online advertisements designed to appear genuine. They urged residents to deal only with trusted companies and verified service providers and to be cautious of offers that seem unusually attractive or promise unrealistic benefits. Authorities identified several scams that have recently become more common. These include fake advertisements for villas, holiday homes, and chalets, fraudulent residency visa services, counterfeit job offers, and fake recruitment agencies claiming to provide employment opportunities. Police also warned about unauthorized insurance plans and false advertisements offering vehicles allegedly seized by Abu Dhabi Customs. Scammers are also targeting buyers with fake listings for vehicle registration plates and luxury watches sold at heavily discounted prices. In addition, authorities highlighted fraudulent investment schemes that promise exceptionally high returns in a short period, a tactic commonly used to convince victims to hand over their savings. Police said criminals are increasingly using fake websites that imitate government departments and well known organizations to trick people into revealing sensitive information. Other scams involve persuading victims to install remote access software on their phones or computers, allowing fraudsters to gain access to personal data and banking accounts. Residents were also warned about requests for advance payments for products or services that do not exist. These include fake training courses, certificates, event tickets, and online shopping offers where the promised goods are never delivered after payment is made. Abu Dhabi Police strongly advised the public never to share banking information, passwords, or one time passwords with anyone, regardless of the reason given. Officials stressed that banks and government agencies do not ask customers to disclose such confidential information through phone calls, text messages, or online links. Authorities also encouraged residents to verify the identity of sellers and service providers before transferring money or making advance payments. They recommended accessing government services only through official websites and authorized mobile applications instead of clicking on links found through search engines or social media advertisements. Anyone who suspects they have encountered a scam or comes across suspicious online activity is urged to report it immediately through Abu Dhabi Police’s Aman service. Prompt reporting allows investigators to respond more quickly, prevent additional victims from being targeted, and strengthen efforts to combat cybercrime across the community. Police emphasized that staying cautious, verifying information before making payments, and protecting personal banking details are the most effective ways to avoid falling victim to online fraud, particularly during salary periods when scammers are most active.

Police raid Attorney General’s Lahore home, 11 o…

Lahore police have registered a case against the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sarwar Road Police Station and 10 other personnel following a raid at the residence of Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Awan. According to police, the officers had information about a house adjacent to the Attorney General’s residence. However, they allegedly entered the wrong property during the operation. The FIR states that the SHO and 11 police personnel were charged for allegedly exceeding their authority during the raid. The incident has also prompted further action against the officials involved. Awan’s driver, Irfan, claimed that the SHO and other police officers entered the house by jumping over the gate. He further alleged that the police took away the CCTV camera system during the raid. According to the driver, only domestic staff were present at the residence when the police arrived. The Attorney General reached home after finishing a meeting after being informed about the incident. Irfan also alleged that the police later returned the digital video recorder (DVR) after deleting CCTV footage from the system. The raid reportedly caused damage to property outside the residence, including flower pots placed near the entrance. Police officials said the raid was conducted based on information concerning the neighbouring house and that the officers mistakenly entered Awan’s residence. Meanwhile, the SHO of Sarwar Road Police Station has obtained interim bail from the court in connection with the case.
