ECP begins Islamabad local polls preparations

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has started the delimitation process for holding local government elections in Islamabad.

The commission said the formal process will begin on August 1, 2026, and will continue until October 13, 2026. The delimitation of constituencies is a major step before announcing the election schedule.

An ECP spokesperson said that after the completion of the delimitation process and publication of the final constituencies, the commission will consult the federal government regarding the date for Islamabad’s local government elections.

The spokesperson also shared updates about local government elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In Punjab, delimitation authorities have been directed to submit their decisions to the relevant committees by August 7. The final delimitation list for the province will be published on August 17.

The ECP said it is fully prepared to conduct local government elections in Punjab after completing all necessary legal requirements and consultations.

Regarding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the commission said delimitation has been completed in 23 districts, while work is continuing in seven more districts.

The spokesperson said the ECP held discussions with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary and local government secretary on July 14 about the election schedule. Provincial authorities were given additional time after requesting support for completing arrangements.

The commission said recent amendments to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Government Act created legal issues that affected the delimitation process. The ECP informed the provincial government about these concerns and sought cooperation to resolve the matter.

The spokesperson said the commission has faced delays in local government elections because federal and provincial governments often change local government laws close to election dates.

He said the ECP has repeatedly completed delimitation exercises and prepared election schedules, but changes in legal frameworks affect the process.

The commission recommended that major changes to local government laws and boundaries should be completed at least one year before elections. It said this would help ensure a smooth and timely electoral process.

Role Model shares reason for missing Taylor Swift’s wedding

Singer-songwriter Role Model has shared why he was unable to attend Taylor Swift’s highly talked-about wedding, while also opening up about how attending his first wedding as an adult completely reshaped his views on marriage. The 29-year-old musician, whose real name is Tucker Pillsbury, explained that he had to skip the July 3 celebration because he was fully occupied with promoting his upcoming album, Chuck Timely & the Hourglass, which is scheduled for release on August 7. Although he missed the star-studded event, Role Model said he had heard wonderful things about the ceremony and wished he could have been there. He admitted that the timing of his album rollout left him unable to take a break from work, despite the significance of the occasion. Beyond discussing the wedding he missed, the singer reflected on how attending another wedding had a surprisingly emotional impact on him. For years, he had viewed marriage with skepticism and never found the traditional ceremony itself particularly appealing. According to Role Model, the idea of spending a lifetime with someone has always seemed deeply romantic, but the customs surrounding weddings—including gathering large groups of people in a church—never resonated with him. That perspective shifted dramatically after he attended his first wedding as an adult. The experience caught him completely off guard, as he found himself overcome with emotion during the ceremony. He admitted that he unexpectedly cried, something he had never anticipated before attending the event. Looking back, the artist said his emotional reaction was about more than simply witnessing two people get married. It also made him reflect on his own life, describing the feeling as watching others move forward while questioning where he stood in comparison. The experience inspired him to write his song The Wedding, which explores the emotions sparked by that life-changing moment. Role Model revealed that those feelings only grew stronger when his sister later got married. Watching another loved one reach a major milestone prompted even more self-reflection, encouraging him to think deeply about relationships, commitment, and the passage of time. The singer also offered insight into his approach to romance, admitting that he naturally prepares himself for the worst in relationships. Rather than seeing that mindset as a flaw, he believes it helps him stay grounded and avoid rushing into serious commitments based solely on attraction or the excitement of an early connection. He explained that asking difficult questions at the beginning of a relationship is important to him, saying he prefers to carefully consider compatibility instead of diving in without hesitation. Role Model also confirmed that he is dating actress Dakota Johnson. Their relationship has attracted attention since the pair were first linked late last year, and they have since been photographed together on multiple occasions. Johnson also makes a special appearance on Role Model’s upcoming album, contributing a spoken-word cameo to the track Love I You. The song features a lighthearted exchange between the couple, giving fans a glimpse of their chemistry beyond the public eye. As Role Model prepares to release his new record, he continues to balance his growing music career with a more thoughtful outlook on love and commitment—one that has evolved significantly after experiences he never expected would leave such a lasting emotional impression.

Five killed in tragic Car crash on Lahore’s cana…

LAHORE: Five people were killed and another was injured in a tragic road accident on Lahore’s Canal Road after a speeding car reportedly went out of control and struck two pedestrians before crashing into a utility pole and a tree. According to Rescue 1122, the accident occurred on Canal Road near Harbanspura in Lahore. The incident claimed the lives of three young people travelling in the car as well as two pedestrians who were walking along the roadside. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was allegedly performing drifting on the road when he lost control of the vehicle. The car reportedly mounted the footpath alongside the canal and struck two young pedestrians. It then continued moving before crashing into an electricity pole and a tree. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in multiple fatalities. Three occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, while two pedestrians also lost their lives as a result of being hit by the speeding car. An 11-year-old boy who was travelling in the car was injured in the accident. Rescue teams reached the site after receiving information about the crash and began rescue and emergency operations. The injured child was shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. According to information available after the incident, the four people travelling in the car were cousins. The victims were reportedly young, with the ages of those who died ranging between 15 and 18 years. A report regarding the circumstances before the accident stated that the four boys had allegedly left their home around 6am while their family members were still asleep. They reportedly took the car and went out, after which the fatal accident occurred on Canal Road. The incident has raised concerns about dangerous driving and the risks associated with speeding and performing stunts on public roads. Drifting, particularly at high speed and on busy roads, can result in a driver losing control of a vehicle within seconds. The consequences can be devastating not only for the occupants of the vehicle but also for pedestrians and other road users. Canal Road is an important route in Lahore and carries significant traffic throughout the day. Although the accident occurred early in the morning, the presence of pedestrians near the roadside made the situation particularly dangerous. The deaths of the young people have caused grief among their families and relatives. The fact that the victims were reportedly teenagers has added to the tragedy, while the two pedestrians who were also killed became unintended victims of the alleged reckless driving. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including the speed of the vehicle and the eyewitness claims that the driver had been performing drifting before losing control. Investigators may also examine the vehicle and the accident site to determine the exact sequence of events. The accident once again highlights the importance of responsible driving, particularly among young drivers. Speeding, reckless manoeuvres and driving without adequate experience can have fatal consequences. The incident serves as a tragic reminder that public roads are shared spaces and that reckless behaviour behind the wheel can put the lives of innocent pedestrians and passengers at serious risk. Families and road safety authorities have repeatedly urged young people to avoid dangerous driving practices and follow traffic regulations. Further details regarding the investigation and the condition of the injured 11-year-old are expected as authorities continue to assess the incident.

Monsoon rains, floods disrupt life across Pakistan

Monsoon rains and flooding have disrupted daily life in several parts of the country, with rising water levels and overflowing streams causing damage and cutting off road links. In Mianwali, the rising water level of the Indus River caused a protective embankment to breach, allowing floodwater to enter nearby residential areas. Meanwhile, low-level flooding continues along the Ravi River. In Dadu, rising water levels in the Gaj River have cut off road access to more than 10 villages, leaving residents facing difficulties in travelling and accessing essential supplies. Heavy rain is also continuing in Nangarparkar, Tharparkar, where more than 150 millimetres of rain has been recorded over the past two days. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also released rainfall figures for Karachi, showing that several parts of the city received rain overnight. In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain in Chilas and surrounding areas has caused streams and waterways to swell, raising concerns about further disruption. The Astore Valley Road has remained closed for the past six days, creating shortages of essential food and other supplies in affected areas. The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in parts of Sindh and southern Punjab today. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as further rainfall could worsen the flooding situation.

Rubio warns of catastrophic US-China conflict

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that any military or economic conflict between the United States and China would have devastating consequences for both countries and the wider world, stressing the importance of carefully managing relations between the two global powers. Speaking during a televised interview, Rubio said the relationship between Washington and Beijing remains one of the most significant challenges in international diplomacy. He cautioned that a direct confrontation between the world’s two largest economies would create severe political, economic and security consequences far beyond their borders. Rubio said the United States must continue protecting its national interests while avoiding actions that could trigger a major conflict. He described balancing competition with stability as one of the most difficult responsibilities of foreign policy. His remarks come as strategic rivalry between the United States and China continues to deepen across multiple sectors, including trade, technology, security and global influence. Economic tensions have remained high in recent years, with both countries imposing restrictions on each other’s industries. The United States has expanded trade measures and tightened controls on several Chinese products and technologies, citing national security concerns. Washington has also introduced new restrictions on advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and robotics, as part of broader efforts to protect sensitive industries and limit the transfer of critical technologies. China has strongly criticised these measures, calling them unfair and unilateral. Beijing has repeatedly opposed US trade restrictions and warned that it could respond with countermeasures to protect its economic interests. Competition between the two countries has also intensified in the field of artificial intelligence, where both sides have exchanged allegations over technology development and intellectual property. Beyond economic and technological issues, both nations continue to strengthen their global influence through different diplomatic strategies. While the United States has focused on reinforcing partnerships with regional allies, China has expanded its engagement with developing countries and strengthened ties with nations across the Global South. Analysts believe that despite growing competition, both Washington and Beijing recognise the importance of maintaining communication to prevent tensions from escalating into open conflict.

Tanzid Hasan hits century as Bangladesh dominate Australia

Bangladesh strengthened their grip on the Darwin Test against Australia on Friday as opener Tanzid Hasan produced a memorable maiden Test century to put the visitors in a commanding position after the second day. Bangladesh finished the day on 351 for six, securing a valuable 153-run lead and leaving Australia facing an uphill battle in the opening Test. The biggest highlight was Tanzid, who marked only his second Test appearance with a composed century. The young opener spent nearly five hours at the crease, facing 197 deliveries and striking eight boundaries and one six on his way to three figures. His innings provided Bangladesh with the foundation they needed against a strong Australian attack. Tanzid first combined with Mominul Haque to build a 102-run partnership for the second wicket. He then continued Bangladesh’s progress alongside captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, with the pair adding another 93 runs. Shanto played a valuable supporting role before falling for 84, but Bangladesh refused to surrender their advantage despite Australia finding some success with the new ball. Australia managed to take three quick wickets with the second new ball, raising hopes of a late collapse. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud responded with disciplined batting to frustrate the hosts. The pair remained unbeaten at the close, putting together an important 43-run partnership for the seventh wicket and ensuring Bangladesh ended the day firmly in control. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins claimed one wicket each, but their efforts were not enough to prevent Bangladesh from establishing a substantial advantage. Tanzid’s century was particularly significant given his limited Test experience. Having played only his second match in the format, he showed patience and maturity against one of the world’s most respected bowling attacks. With Bangladesh already 153 runs ahead and four wickets still in hand, Australia face a crucial third day in Darwin. The hosts will need early breakthroughs to prevent Bangladesh from turning their advantage into a potentially decisive position.
