Internet restored in Muzaffarabad after 53 days

Broadband internet services have been restored in Muzaffarabad after a 53-day suspension, bringing relief to residents, businesses, journalists and students who had struggled with limited digital connectivity since early June.

The restoration took effect late Wednesday night, allowing broadband users to regain access to online services. However, mobile internet connectivity remained unstable in several areas, with users continuing to report intermittent disruptions.

The prolonged shutdown had significantly affected communication, online banking, digital businesses, educational activities and media coverage, particularly during the ongoing election season in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Journalists and political workers had repeatedly raised concerns over the lack of internet access, saying it hindered the flow of information and election-related reporting.

The restoration comes just days before the second phase of the AJK Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled for August 2, when more than 1.24 million voters are expected to cast their ballots in 21 constituencies. The polls will include nine constituencies in Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for Jammu and Kashmir refugees residing in Pakistan.

Election authorities have completed polling arrangements and announced enhanced security measures to ensure peaceful, transparent and orderly elections. A total of 351 candidates are contesting the second phase, with several high-profile political leaders participating in closely watched races.

Political campaigning has intensified across Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley and Jhelum Valley as major parties make their final push to secure voter support before polling day.

    ISLAMABAD: Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH), marking the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is being observed across Pakistan with deep religious devotion, respect and enthusiasm. The day began with a gun salute, while mosques, streets, public buildings and residential areas have been illuminated and decorated to mark the occasion. Special Milad gatherings, Naat recitations and religious programmes are being held in cities and towns across the country. In Karachi, streets and neighbourhoods have been adorned with colourful lights, while models of the Holy Kaaba and Masjid al-Nabawi (PBUH) have been displayed at several locations. Religious gatherings and processions are also being organised in different parts of the city. Lahore has also been decorated for the occasion, with mosques, homes, roads and government buildings illuminated. Special prayers are being offered for Pakistan’s peace, progress and prosperity. The city’s main procession is scheduled to begin from Railway Station Chowk. In Peshawar, devotees are arranging Naat Khawani and Milad gatherings to pay tribute to the Holy Prophet (PBUH), while Quetta has also been illuminated for the celebrations. The main gathering in Quetta is scheduled to take place at Bacha Khan Chowk. Islamabad is witnessing similar celebrations, with the capital decorated with lights and religious gatherings being organised at mosques. Devotees are expressing their love and reverence for the Holy Prophet (PBUH) through prayers, Naat recitations and processions. The main Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession in Karachi is scheduled to leave Shaheed Masjid in Kharadar at 2:30pm. It will pass through New Memon Mosque before concluding at Gulzar-e-Habib Mosque around Asr prayer time. Processions and religious programmes are also being held in other cities. To facilitate the celebrations, K-Electric has announced that no load-shedding will be carried out across Karachi on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi.

    CAIRO: Egypt has started a serious review of the possibility of joining the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Cairo has close and strategic relations with all three countries. He said Egypt’s ties with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye extend beyond political cooperation. Abdelatty was asked about Egypt’s possible inclusion in the defence agreement. He said Egypt has been aware of the pact since the beginning. He confirmed that Egyptian state institutions are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the agreement. The minister said no final decision has been taken yet. He added that the relevant Egyptian authorities are examining the agreement and its possible implications. Abdelatty stressed that defence agreements involve important commitments. Therefore, Egypt must carefully assess all legal and constitutional aspects before making a decision. He said any possible Egyptian participation would have to comply with the country’s Constitution and existing legal requirements. The review will also consider the responsibilities that could arise from joining the agreement. The development comes days after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. The pact seeks to strengthen defence cooperation among the three countries and enhance their collective security. Under the agreement, an attack against any one of the three countries would be considered an attack against all three. The arrangement has been described as a major step towards closer defence and strategic cooperation.
