ISLAMABAD: Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH), marking the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is being observed across Pakistan with deep religious devotion, respect and enthusiasm. The day began with a gun salute, while mosques, streets, public buildings and residential areas have been illuminated and decorated to mark the occasion.

Special Milad gatherings, Naat recitations and religious programmes are being held in cities and towns across the country. In Karachi, streets and neighbourhoods have been adorned with colourful lights, while models of the Holy Kaaba and Masjid al-Nabawi (PBUH) have been displayed at several locations. Religious gatherings and processions are also being organised in different parts of the city.

Lahore has also been decorated for the occasion, with mosques, homes, roads and government buildings illuminated. Special prayers are being offered for Pakistan’s peace, progress and prosperity. The city’s main procession is scheduled to begin from Railway Station Chowk.

In Peshawar, devotees are arranging Naat Khawani and Milad gatherings to pay tribute to the Holy Prophet (PBUH), while Quetta has also been illuminated for the celebrations. The main gathering in Quetta is scheduled to take place at Bacha Khan Chowk.

Islamabad is witnessing similar celebrations, with the capital decorated with lights and religious gatherings being organised at mosques. Devotees are expressing their love and reverence for the Holy Prophet (PBUH) through prayers, Naat recitations and processions.

The main Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession in Karachi is scheduled to leave Shaheed Masjid in Kharadar at 2:30pm. It will pass through New Memon Mosque before concluding at Gulzar-e-Habib Mosque around Asr prayer time. Processions and religious programmes are also being held in other cities.

To facilitate the celebrations, K-Electric has announced that no load-shedding will be carried out across Karachi on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi.

Machado’s absence has attracted significant attention because she remains the country’s most popular opposition figure. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has been living mostly outside Venezuela after spending months in hiding following the disputed 2024 presidential election. She recently announced plans to return to Venezuela to assist communities affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck the country in June, despite concerns expressed by some US officials about the timing of her return. Reports suggesting that the Trump administration discouraged Machado from returning have been rejected by US President Donald Trump. Since the removal of former president Nicolas Maduro earlier this year, Machado has largely remained outside the political process promoted by Washington. US officials have argued that broader political support is needed to lead the country’s transition. According to people familiar with the negotiations, Machado was either informed about the talks shortly before they were announced or was never invited to join the delegation because she is not a member of the 2015 National Assembly. Machado has stated that she will judge the success of the negotiations by whether they restore democratic institutions, release political prisoners and establish a clear path toward credible elections. Political analysts believe the negotiators face pressure to deliver meaningful progress quickly. They say any agreement must convince Venezuelans that the process is capable of producing real political change while addressing concerns over Machado’s absence from the discussions. The interim government is expected to use the negotiations to seek the removal of remaining US sanctions. Although the talks were initially scheduled to begin on August 1, sources close to both the government and the opposition said they are now expected to start on Sunday or Monday after the opposition delegation arrives in Caracas. Previous negotiations between the opposition and the former Maduro administration produced limited results. An agreement before the 2024 election promised fair competition and full opposition participation, but Machado was later barred from running.     Hafiz Naeem targets IPP deals, fuel prices

    Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has strongly criticised the government over rising fuel prices, heavy taxation and electricity costs. Addressing participants at the party’s sit-in in Lahore, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the government was putting an increasing financial burden on ordinary citizens. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices. He said the petroleum levy had no direct connection with the actual price of petrol. He questioned the justification for repeatedly increasing fuel prices and said the government was making life more difficult for the public. “The government drops a petrol bomb on us every day,” he said. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also criticised the government’s policies regarding independent power producers (IPPs). He alleged that successive governments had entered into unfair agreements with IPPs in the name of ending load-shedding. According to him, the government was now passing the cost of its own shortcomings on to the people through higher taxes. He said citizens were already struggling with expensive electricity and gas bills. The Jamaat-e-Islami leader said heavy taxes were being imposed on electricity and gas bills. He argued that such charges were increasing household expenses and adding to the difficulties faced by ordinary consumers. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman further said the government had shut down five of the 27 IPPs. He referred to the government’s own claim that the move would provide a benefit of Rs3,360 billion to the national exchequer. He questioned why similar measures could not be taken to provide lasting relief to consumers. He said the government should focus on reducing electricity costs instead of continuously increasing taxes and other charges. The Jamaat-e-Islami emir also criticised the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). He alleged that corruption within the tax collection system remained widespread. He called for greater transparency and accountability in government institutions. He said economic policies should be designed to provide relief to the public rather than increase their financial difficulties.

    Court rules d4vd will stand trial in teen murder case

    A Los Angeles judge has ruled that there is sufficient evidence for singer d4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, to stand trial in the murder case of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The decision followed a five-day preliminary hearing during which prosecutors presented forensic evidence, text messages and witness testimony related to the teenager’s death. Burke has pleaded not guilty to all charges. According to court proceedings, Burke is facing charges including first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. Prosecutors allege he killed Rivas Hernandez in April 2025 after she threatened to expose their alleged illegal relationship, which they claim could have damaged his rapidly rising music career. The court heard that the victim’s remains were discovered in September 2025 inside the trunk of a Tesla registered to Burke after authorities investigated a foul odour coming from the vehicle. Medical examiners later ruled the teenager’s death a homicide. Prosecutors also presented evidence they say links Burke to the crime, including DNA findings, electronic communications and purchases allegedly connected to the disposal of the body. During the hearing, prosecutors also introduced text messages exchanged between Burke and Rivas Hernandez that allegedly discussed pregnancy and abortion. Additional evidence included explicit photographs recovered from Burke’s phone and digital accounts, which prosecutors argue support their claim that the pair had an illegal sexual relationship before the teenager’s death. Burke’s defence team argued that prosecutors had failed to establish evidence of premeditated murder and maintained that the singer is innocent. His lawyers insisted the evidence presented does not prove he intentionally killed the teenager and said they will continue to challenge the prosecution’s case at trial. Burke has consistently denied all allegations since his arrest earlier this year. After reviewing the evidence, the judge ruled that prosecutors had presented enough material for the case to proceed before a jury. The decision means Burke will now face a full criminal trial, where prosecutors will be required to prove their allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. He remains in custody without bail pending further proceedings. The case has attracted widespread attention because of Burke’s rapid rise in the music industry before his arrest. Prosecutors contend that the alleged murder was committed to prevent Rivas Hernandez from revealing details of their relationship, while the defence maintains that Burke has been wrongly accused. Burke is expected to be arraigned on August 31, with the trial likely to begin within the following weeks. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.     PAC flags Rs19bn BISP payment irregularities

    A subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has raised concerns over financial irregularities in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) after audit officials revealed that more than Rs19 billion was paid outside the beneficiaries’ respective provinces or districts. The meeting was chaired by subcommittee convener Moeen Aamir Pirzada. Members reviewed a series of audit objections related to BISP covering the financial years from 2010-11 to 2022-23. During the briefing, audit officials informed the committee that payments worth over Rs19 billion had been made in locations different from the beneficiaries’ registered districts or provinces. The audit team said the transactions required further scrutiny to determine whether they resulted from administrative weaknesses, verification gaps or possible misuse of the programme. Committee members expressed concern over the findings and stressed the need for stronger monitoring and accountability in the country’s largest social welfare programme. They said public funds intended for deserving families must be distributed through a transparent and well-monitored system. The subcommittee examined the audit observations in detail and sought explanations from the relevant BISP officials regarding the irregular payments. Officials were asked to clarify how such payments were processed and whether adequate checks were in place to prevent similar cases. The committee also discussed measures to improve the verification process, strengthen oversight and ensure that future payments are made only to eligible beneficiaries through proper channels. Members emphasized that any financial irregularities should be investigated thoroughly and those responsible should be held accountable.
