Four held after Haripur child found dead in abando…

HARIPUR: Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged abduction, sexual assault and murder of a five-year-old girl whose body was recovered from a deserted well in Haripur after an extensive search operation.

Haripur District Police Officer Shafiullah Gandapur said the child was reported missing by her father on August 10. Police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code and launched a search operation to trace her.

A special investigation team was subsequently formed, comprising senior police officers, investigators and female police officials. A separate technical team was assigned to examine digital evidence, including CCTV footage, call records and geofencing data.

Police reviewed footage from around 200 cameras and examined the records of 20 suspected telephone numbers. Investigators said footage from 12 cameras proved particularly significant in reconstructing the child’s movements after she left home and identifying individuals allegedly travelling in the area on foot and on a motorcycle.

Three suspects were initially arrested, and police also recovered a motorcycle allegedly used in the incident. According to police, one suspect recorded a statement before a court admitting his involvement in the alleged abduction and sexual assault. The other suspects were produced before the court for further legal proceedings.

Police later arrested a fourth suspect. Information obtained during the investigation led officers to a deep, dry and overgrown well located on a vacant plot near Link Road on University Road, close to a warehouse.

A search team, assisted by Rescue 1122 personnel, recovered the child’s body from the well. The recovery operation was monitored by the DPO and senior members of the investigation team.

The body was shifted to the Rescue 1122 Trauma Centre in Haripur, where a post-mortem examination was conducted. Doctors collected X-rays and samples for DNA and other forensic examinations. The results are awaited.

The investigation has faced additional difficulties because some suspects are reportedly underage and did not possess identity documents. Police said they therefore examined telephone records linked to their family members and other numbers considered relevant to the case.

The search for the missing child involved hundreds of personnel. More than 400 police officials, along with staff from the Tehsil Municipal Administration and Water and Sanitation Agency, participated in searches covering drains, sewerage lines, vegetation, vacant plots and deserted locations around the University of Haripur, Pathan Colony and nearby areas.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed took notice of the case, while Hazara DIG Nasir Mahmood Satti visited Haripur to review the investigation. The DPO briefed him on the evidence collected, CCTV findings and progress in identifying and arresting the suspects.

The DIG also met the victim’s family and assured them that the investigation would be pursued according to law.

Meanwhile, K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the alleged crime and ordered a comprehensive investigation. He directed authorities to ensure that every aspect of the case was examined and that those found responsible were dealt with strictly under the law.

The chief minister expressed condolences to the child’s family and said crimes against children would not be tolerated. He assured the family that the provincial government would support them and that the suspects would face legal consequences if found guilty.

    The meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to sight the moon of Rabi-ul-Awwal 1448 AH is underway in Islamabad. The meeting is being held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Kohsar Block under the chairmanship of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has predicted that the Rabi-ul-Awwal moon is unlikely to be sighted today. According to SUPARCO, the chances of sighting the moon are very low as it will be approximately 20 hours and 53 minutes old at sunset. SUPARCO said Rabi-ul-Awwal 1 is likely to fall on Saturday. However, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is the competent authority to make the final announcement regarding the sighting or non-sighting of the moon.

However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has indicated that Karachi is still likely to receive more monsoon showers during the month of August. On Monday, the city experienced stronger-than-usual southwesterly sea breezes, helping to keep temperatures slightly lower than the previous day. According to the PMD, wind speeds reached 42 kilometers per hour, while the maximum temperature settled at 34.4°C, around 0.8°C lower than the previous day’s reading. Meteorologists said the strong sea breeze played a key role in moderating daytime temperatures despite the prevailing humid conditions. Residents continued to experience warm and sticky weather, although the increased wind speed provided some relief from the heat. The Early Warning Center has forecast partly cloudy, hot, and humid conditions for the next three days. During this period, daytime temperatures are expected to range between 34°C and 36°C, with no immediate indication of widespread rainfall. According to PMD spokesperson and Deputy Director Anjum Nazir, the weather system that triggered recent rain across Karachi has now completely weakened. He noted that it is too early to determine whether a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will have any direct impact on Karachi’s weather. Despite the end of the current system, weather experts remain optimistic about the city’s monsoon outlook. They expect Karachi to receive additional rainfall during August as seasonal monsoon activity continues across the region. The timing and intensity of future rain spells will depend on the movement and strength of upcoming weather systems. Karachi typically experiences high humidity during the monsoon season, and changing weather patterns can result in sudden showers even after dry periods. Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather forecasts, especially if they plan to travel or participate in outdoor activities. The latest update offers a brief pause in rainfall while highlighting that the monsoon season is far from over.     Pakistan’s trade deficit widens 26% in July as imports surge

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s trade deficit increased by 26% during the first month of the fiscal year 2026-27, mainly driven by a sharp rise in imports, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The widening gap between imports and exports highlights growing pressure on the country’s external trade position at the beginning of the new fiscal year. Imports increased by around 19% in July, with higher purchases recorded across several major categories, including food products, machinery, transport equipment, textiles, agricultural inputs and metals. According to the PBS data, the country’s food import bill reached $805.4 million in July 2026, equivalent to more than Rs224 billion. The increase reflects continued reliance on imported food products and essential raw materials to meet domestic demand. Among food items, imports of milk, cream and food products prepared for infants rose by 25% to $18.7 million. Pakistan also imported significant quantities of spices, soybeans, palm oil and pulses during the month. Sugar imports were also recorded during July, with the country importing around 112 metric tonnes, adding to the overall food import bill. Machinery imports rise sharply Machinery emerged as one of the major contributors to the increase in the import bill. Machinery imports jumped by 41% to $1.31 billion during July compared with the corresponding period. The increase covered a wide range of equipment used in key sectors of the economy. Imports included machinery for power generation, offices, textile manufacturing, agriculture, construction and telecommunications. The rise in machinery imports could indicate increased demand for equipment and investment-related goods across different industries, although it also contributed significantly to the expansion of the overall trade gap. Vehicle imports register strong growth Imports of transport equipment, including vehicles, also witnessed substantial growth during the month. The import bill for the category increased by 40% to $420 million. The increase in vehicle and transport-related imports added further pressure to the country’s import expenditure, particularly as several other major import categories also recorded double-digit growth. Textile-related imports increase Pakistan’s textile sector also recorded higher imports during July. Imports of textile-related products, including raw cotton, increased by 15% to $680 million. The rise in raw cotton and other textile inputs indicates continued demand from the country’s large textile manufacturing and export industry. Since the textile sector remains a major contributor to Pakistan’s exports, higher imports of production inputs can also be linked to industrial activity. Agricultural inputs and chemicals Imports of agricultural machinery, equipment and chemicals increased by 23%, taking the combined import bill for the category to more than $1 billion. The increase comes as demand remains high for inputs and equipment required by the agriculture sector. Higher imports of such goods can support domestic production but simultaneously add to the country’s foreign exchange requirements. Metals import bill also rises The country also witnessed a significant increase in imports of metals, including gold, iron and steel. Imports under the category increased by around 23%, while the import bill for precious metals alone crossed $730 million. The broad-based rise across food, machinery, transport, textiles, agricultural inputs and metals suggests that the increase in imports was not confined to a single sector. The latest figures indicate that controlling the trade gap will remain an important challenge for policymakers during the new fiscal year. While higher imports of machinery, industrial inputs and agricultural equipment may support economic activity, a sustained increase in imports without a corresponding rise in exports could place additional pressure on Pakistan’s external account.

Spiderman must help the people of New York even if that comes at the cost of his personal happiness. He has distanced himself from those he used to know, such as his girlfriend MJ and his friend Ned. Spider-Man: A Brand New Day has been directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is a Marvel Studios production. It falls into the genre of action, sci-fi and adventure. With a runtime of 2 hours and 24 minutes, it has been rated at 8.2/10 on IMDB. The plot is a fight of good against evil. The damage control centre kills Sarah, Jean’s sister, for her special powers. Jean is in their imprisonment. Bill, the director of Damage Control, seeks Spider-Man’s help to eliminate Jean. Spiderman does not know the truth, and he helps Bill. What is the truth? Will Spider-Man find out in time? The film follows a flashback where Jean and Sarah are together, and the damage control employees kidnap Sarah. The damage control is after V. Max, and no one knows what it is. Jean possesses extraordinary psychic abilities. Jean can get into people’s minds. She can control their minds and possess them. She has powers she cannot curb. As Spiderman follows the trail and puts two and two together, he realises Bill was the real culprit. As Jean tries to destroy Bill, Spiderman convinces her not to. Once again, the film shows that Spider-Man’s greatest strength is compassion and not brute force. Spiderman helps Jean understand the healing power of love. He promises to stay by her side. In the subplot is Peter Parker’s romantic relationship with MJ (Zendaya). The relationship on the verge of destruction is restored as MJ remembers the time she spent with Peter. Spiderman is severely injured at the end, and as Jean uses her magical powers to cure him, she is successful. The film offers a bit of comic relief when Spider-Man exits the hospital without being noticed. It sends the audience into peals of laughter. The characterisation is superb. Tom Holland’s (Peter Parker) performance is outstanding. Tom appears as a more mature Spider-Man who carries the burden of immense personal sacrifice without losing his compassion and sense of humour. Zendaya (MJ) also spontaneously delivers her role. The chemistry between the two is striking despite the heartbreaking distance between them. Visually, the film is spectacular. The web singing sequences through NewYork are exhilarating, and the cinematography is great. The thematic concerns are of identity, sacrifice, loneliness and hope. Peter’s struggle to rebuild his life after having lost everything makes him more relatable than ever. Spiderman- A Brand New Day follows the film Spiderman: No Way Home, documenting Peter Parker’s journey since then. As Parker is faced with a choice to either be Spiderman or Peter he chooses to be both. At the end, the film promises another movie, calling it Spiderman Returns. On the whole, Spiderman: A Brand New Day is a story about resilience and selflessness, and it remains true to the character of  Spiderman. It delivers thrilling action and heartfelt performances. A great film that deserves applause. So grab your tickets before they run out!

    Shaheen Afridi credits Champions Cup for World Cup preparations

    MULTAN: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi believes the National Champions Cup 2026 has played an important role in helping the national selectors assess players ahead of the ICC World Cup 2027. Shaheen, who led Pakistan Gold during the tournament, said the competition provided valuable opportunities to examine the fitness, form and potential of players who could become part of Pakistan’s ODI plans. Pakistan Gold endured a difficult start, losing their opening two matches, but produced a convincing turnaround against Pakistan Whites. Shaheen spearheaded the bowling attack, taking three wickets as Whites were dismissed for 172.
