NCCIA summons Asad Toor over ‘false information?…

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned journalist Asad Ali Toor for questioning over allegations of spreading false or misleading information online.

According to the notice issued by the agency, the state has been named as the complainant in the case. The inquiry relates to allegations of the dissemination, transmission or public display of information described as false or fake.

The proceedings have been initiated under Section 26A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016, which deals with the dissemination of false and fake information.

The NCCIA has directed Toor to appear before its Cybercrime Reporting Centre in Islamabad at 11am on July 31.

The notice warned that failure to appear without a lawful reason could result in the inquiry continuing in his absence. The agency said non-compliance could also lead to action under Section 174 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which concerns failure to attend when ordered by a public servant.

Toor confirmed receiving the summons through a post on X. He shared an image of the notice and accompanied it with verses by revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

The development has also raised concerns among journalist organisations over press freedom and the treatment of journalists facing legal proceedings.

The National Press Club (NPC) in Islamabad criticised the notice and expressed concern over what it described as growing pressure on the media.

The press club said freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution. It argued that journalists should not face legal pressure or retaliation simply for carrying out their professional responsibilities or expressing critical views.

The NPC called on relevant institutions to perform their duties within the framework of the law, the Constitution and fundamental rights.

It also stressed that free, responsible and safe journalism is essential for a healthy democratic system.

The press body urged authorities to withdraw the notice and ensure that journalists’ constitutional and legal rights are protected. It also warned that measures restricting press freedom could create further insecurity among members of the journalist community.

This is not the first time Toor has faced legal action under cybercrime laws. He was arrested in 2024 in a case registered under Peca over allegations of running a campaign against state institutions.

His arrest at the time prompted criticism from sections of the journalist community. He was subsequently released.

    Rana Sanaullah calls AJK polls free and fair

    Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has defended the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. He described the polling process as peaceful, free, fair and credible. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Sanaullah said voters had exercised their democratic right across 13 constituencies of Mirpur Division on July 27. According to unofficial results, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won nine seats. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured four seats. Sanaullah congratulated the winning candidates. He also praised the Election Commission, AJK administration and security agencies for managing the election process. He said the polls were held despite a challenging security situation. He added that the authorities took steps to maintain law and order throughout polling. The prime minister’s aide urged opposition parties to respect the voters’ decision. However, he said they were free to challenge any alleged irregularities through constitutional and legal channels. Sanaullah said complaints regarding the election would be examined by the relevant authorities. He stressed that political parties should use legal forums instead of creating political tensions. He also said polling hours were extended by one hour. The extension was given to facilitate voters and allow more people to cast their ballots. He estimated voter turnout at between 40 and 60 per cent. Sanaullah said the election was largely peaceful. However, a serious incident occurred in LA-9 Nakyal. A dispute between members of the same family reportedly turned violent because of political differences. One person was killed and another was injured in the incident. Police arrested several suspects in connection with the shooting. Sanaullah also mentioned the killing of PML-N leader Malik Ashiq. He was shot during an election rally in Kotli on July 11. The government official further claimed that a candidate from LA-6 and members of his campaign team attempted to take ballot boxes after polling. He said the suspects were arrested and a case was registered. Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam also addressed the press conference. He said the PML-N’s performance showed strong public support for the party. Muqam said the party would work to fulfil the promises made during its election campaign. Sanaullah attributed the PML-N’s success to teamwork and its political leadership. He also said development initiatives in Punjab had contributed to the party’s electoral performance. The election results have triggered political exchanges between the PML-N and PPP. The PPP has raised allegations of irregularities and accused the government of influencing the election process. The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection said mosquitoes carrying the virus were detected in the Menashe Regional Council, Ramat Hasharon and Eilat. Health officials explained that West Nile virus is generally transmitted through mosquitoes that become infected after feeding on birds carrying the virus. The infected mosquitoes can subsequently transmit the virus to humans through bites. Professor Sigal Sadeski, head of the Public Health Division, said that West Nile fever is mild in most cases and many infected people may not develop noticeable symptoms. However, the infection can become serious in some patients. Health experts warn that the virus can affect the nervous system and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as encephalitis or meningitis. The risk of severe illness is reportedly higher among people over the age of 60 and those who already have underlying health conditions. Investigation Underway Israeli authorities have launched epidemiological investigations to determine how and where the affected individuals were exposed to infected mosquitoes. Officials are also examining whether cases reported in different locations are connected and are attempting to identify areas where infected mosquitoes may have come into contact with people. The discovery of infected mosquitoes has also increased the importance of mosquito surveillance and control measures in the affected areas. Environmental authorities are expected to monitor mosquito populations and take steps aimed at reducing the risk of further transmission. Previous Outbreak in 2024 Israel also experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus in 2024. According to an Israeli report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health, 916 human cases had been confirmed by September 2024, with 71 deaths reported. The latest cases have renewed concerns about the seasonal spread of West Nile virus and the potential risks posed by infected mosquitoes. While most infections are mild or may cause no obvious symptoms, severe neurological complications can occur in a small proportion of patients. Health authorities are therefore continuing surveillance and investigating the latest infections to better understand the spread of the virus. The current outbreak highlights the importance of mosquito-control measures, particularly during periods when mosquito activity is high. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring affected areas and investigating possible sources of transmission.
