Policeman martyred in Swat anti-terror operation

A police constable was martyred during an ongoing operation against suspected terrorists in Swat’s Kabal tehsil, police said on Wednesday.

The operation is being carried out in the Shalkho Sar area. Security forces launched the action after receiving information about the presence of terrorists in the region.

According to Swat police, Elite Force Constable Gulfam embraced martyrdom while fighting the militants on Tuesday night. Police said he showed courage during the operation and sacrificed his life in the line of duty.

The operation is being conducted jointly by the Counter-Terrorism Department, Swat Police and Upper Swat Police.

Senior police officials are supervising the operation. The Malakand regional police officer and the district police officers of Swat and Upper Swat are overseeing the security action.

Police said security personnel have surrounded the area where the terrorists are believed to be present. The suspects have reportedly been confined to the Shalkho Sar area.

Officials also reported that the operation may have caused heavy casualties among the terrorists. However, further details about the number of casualties were not immediately available.

The security forces continue to search the area as the operation remains underway. Officials are taking measures to prevent the suspects from escaping.

Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan said the police force remains committed to maintaining peace in the region.

He said law enforcement personnel would continue their efforts to protect the public. He also stressed that police would remain prepared to make sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.

The latest incident comes as security concerns continue to affect parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Reports in recent months have pointed to the presence of militants in Kabal and Matta tehsils of Swat. Security forces have increased operations in areas where militant activity has been reported.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has remained one of the major regions affected by militant violence. Law enforcement agencies have continued conducting intelligence-based and targeted operations to counter terrorist threats.

A security assessment released in June by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies also highlighted the worsening security situation.

The assessment said Pakistan’s security environment had deteriorated significantly in May after showing improvement during the previous two months.

According to the assessment, the increase was largely linked to rising militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The figures show that the amount determined by the Directorate General of Food/CCPb against the sugar mill for the crushing seasons from 2022-23 through 2025-26 totals Rs2.103 billion. Of this amount, around Rs1.518 billion remains unpaid. The latest data indicates that the largest outstanding liability relates to the 2025-26 crushing season. The mill has yet to clear Rs802.19 million determined for that season, representing the entire amount recorded against it. For the 2024-25 season, Rs588.14 million was determined, while approximately Rs341.94 million remains outstanding. Similarly, against Rs552.17 million determined for the 2023-24 season, around Rs347.63 million is still pending. The oldest outstanding amount relates to the 2022-23 crushing season. Against Rs160.25 million determined for that period, Rs26.73 million remains unpaid. The figures highlight the continuing issue of delayed payments within the sugar sector, where outstanding dues can create financial pressure for growers and other stakeholders dependent on timely settlements. The accumulation of unpaid liabilities across multiple crushing seasons has also raised concerns about the timely clearance of dues ahead of the next crushing cycle.     South Korea backs Trump’s push to revive North Korea talks

    SEOUL: South Korea has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s efforts to restart dialogue with North Korea but wants any renewed negotiations to produce meaningful progress on Pyongyang’s nuclear programme. South Korean National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said on Friday that Seoul supports Washington’s diplomatic outreach to North Korea, provided that it does not weaken the country’s security preparedness or leave South Korea out of the process. Wi said any renewed US-North Korea dialogue should focus on achieving tangible progress towards addressing North Korea’s nuclear weapons capabilities while also supporting efforts to establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. He stressed that close coordination between Seoul and Washington would be essential if negotiations with Pyongyang resume. “We need to coordinate with the United States to ensure that any resumption of US-North Korea dialogue leads to substantive progress on the North Korean nuclear issue,” Wi said. The national security adviser also referred to Trump’s recent decision to significantly reduce major joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. He said the move appeared to indicate Washington’s willingness to create conditions for renewed engagement with North Korea. However, Seoul remains concerned about maintaining a credible defence posture. Wi said South Korea must ensure that diplomatic efforts do not undermine military readiness. He also warned that Seoul should not be sidelined if Washington succeeds in reopening talks with Pyongyang. Trump has been seeking another meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The two leaders held three summits during 2018 and 2019, but their negotiations failed to produce a lasting agreement on denuclearisation. Trump has previously criticised the scale of joint US-South Korean military exercises, arguing that some drills could send the wrong message to North Korea. His administration has continued to explore ways to bring Pyongyang back to negotiations. Meanwhile, South Korea, the United States and Japan are scheduled to hold joint military exercises from September 9 to 11. The drills are intended to test the three countries’ readiness to respond to potential missile and nuclear threats from North Korea. Wi also said Seoul was seeking closer cooperation with Washington on several issues that have occasionally created friction between the two allies. These areas include South Korean investment in the United States under a bilateral trade agreement, security cooperation, intelligence sharing and the planned transfer of wartime operational control. The treatment of US-listed South Korean e-commerce company Coupang was also mentioned among the issues requiring greater coordination.

On Ihsanullah, Shinwari said the fast bowler had expressed grievances and suggested that his disciplinary issues should be addressed.
