Pakistani showbiz stars who built careers beyond family legacy

The debate around nepotism in Pakistan’s entertainment industry has continued for years, particularly after similar discussions gained momentum in neighbouring India following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. While several Pakistani celebrities have faced criticism for entering showbiz through family connections, there is another group of artists whose talent has largely overshadowed their famous family backgrounds. A recent Reviewit feature highlighted stars who, despite coming from influential showbiz families, established their own identities through years of hard work and consistent performances.
The article notes that many viewers are unaware of the family backgrounds of these celebrities because they earned recognition on the strength of their own careers. Among them is actor and television host Adeel Hashmi, widely known for his memorable Ufone advertisements and versatile acting. Although he comes from a distinguished family—his mother is veteran media producer Muneeza Hashmi and he is the grandson of legendary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz—Adeel has built his reputation through his own work in television and live performances.
Another name on the list is Ali Tahir, who has spent over two decades in Pakistan’s television industry. Known for his performances in dramas such as Sher and Zard Patton Ka Bunn, Ali belongs to a family with a rich literary and broadcasting legacy. His grandfather was celebrated playwright Imtiaz Ali Taj, while his parents, Naeem Tahir and Yasmeen Tahir, also made significant contributions to the arts and media.
The feature also highlights Momina Duraid, one of Pakistan’s most successful television producers. While she is connected to HUM Network founder Sultana Siddiqui through marriage, Reviewit credits Momina for establishing herself through acclaimed productions and for leading major projects, including Pakistan’s first Netflix series, Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo.
Actress Hina Rizvi is another celebrity whose family has deep roots in the film industry. Despite being the sister of Lollywood veterans Sangeeta and Kavita, she has created a successful acting career of her own through diverse television roles. Similarly, producer Sana Shahnawaz, sister of Samina Humayun Saeed, has earned recognition by producing successful dramas including Man Mayal, Sinf-e-Aahan, Alif and Jaan-e-Jahan.
The article also includes Ushna Shah, whose mother Ismat Tahira, sister Irsa Ghazal and brother Shah Sharabeel are all established names in Pakistani entertainment. Nevertheless, Ushna has become known for her own performances in dramas such as Bashar Momin and Alif Allah Aur Insaan.
Other names featured are Fahad Mustafa, who successfully stepped out of the shadow of his father, Sindhi actor Salahuddin Tunio; Sheheryar Munawar, nephew of media entrepreneur Sultana Siddiqui; Nida Yasir, daughter of veteran PTV producer Kazim Pasha; and Bilal Maqsood, son of renowned writer Anwar Maqsood. According to Reviewit, each of these personalities has earned public recognition through individual achievements rather than relying solely on their family’s legacy, proving that while connections may open doors, long-term success depends on talent, dedication and consistent work.

His bandmates reflected on how Koller’s loyalty, drive, and passion never wavered across four decades together, calling him both a cherished friend and a defining voice of the genre. Beyond the music, it was his presence that left the deepest impression. According to the statement, Koller had a rare gift for lifting the mood at every show, often with nothing more than a grin and a well-timed sarcastic remark. That charm reportedly won him fans in every country the band toured, cutting across cultures and borders in a way few frontmen manage. His bandmates said the outpouring of support helped him feel cared for and valued throughout a difficult two-year battle. As tributes continue to pour in from musicians and fans worldwide, the hardcore community is left mourning not just a frontman, but a figure who embodied the spirit of the scene itself.

Iga Swiatek storms into Toronto semifinal against Svitolina

TORONTO: Former world number one Iga Swiatek produced a commanding performance to defeat Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-1 and reach the Toronto Masters semi-finals, where she will face Elina Svitolina in a highly anticipated showdown. The six-time Grand Slam champion needed only 64 minutes to dispatch the Russian and move into the last four of the Canadian Open. Swiatek controlled the contest from the opening exchanges, using her powerful groundstrokes and precise movement to keep Shnaider under constant pressure. The Polish seventh seed never faced a break point and dominated the match with impressive consistency. She quickly established a 5-2 advantage in the opening set before breaking Shnaider again and serving it out in 31 minutes. The second set proved even more one-sided. Swiatek broke early to move ahead 2-1 before another strong sequence of winners helped her extend the advantage. A third break finally ended Shnaider’s resistance and completed a convincing victory. “From the beginning, I went for it. I felt like I could dominate,” Swiatek said after the match. She also praised her ability to adapt to difficult windy conditions, saying she focused on staying solid rather than overplaying. The victory is significant for Swiatek, who has endured a challenging 2026 season. It marks her first WTA 1000 semi-final of the year, giving her an opportunity to build momentum ahead of the US Open. Standing between Swiatek and a place in the final is Elina Svitolina, who produced a dramatic comeback against Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Ukrainian ninth seed lost the opening set 6-3 but responded brilliantly, winning the second 6-0 before completing a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory. Svitolina recovered after an early setback and showed her fighting spirit when Alexandrova briefly threatened to extend the match late in the deciding set. The upcoming semi-final promises another intriguing chapter in their rivalry. Swiatek has won three of their five meetings, but Svitolina won their two encounters earlier in 2026, including a three-set victory in the Rome semi-final. With both players arriving in Toronto with plenty to prove, their semi-final is shaping up as one of the tournament’s most compelling battles.

British firm begins salvage of grounded shadow fleet tanker leaking oil off Oman coast

British maritime response firm Ambrey has launched an emergency operation to contain an expanding oil spill from the grounded Russian shadow fleet tanker Caroline Bezengi off the coast of Oman, following weeks of worsening environmental damage. Specialist crews boarded the vessel with assistance from the Royal Air Force of Oman to evaluate its structural integrity and begin stabilization procedures. The 25-year-old vessel, carrying an estimated 800,000 barrels of sanctioned Russian crude, ran aground at Qabiliyah Island on 30 June after experiencing an unexplained explosion off Yemen earlier in the month. Severe weather conditions from the regional Khareef monsoon season have accelerated the spread of the slick, which has expanded across more than 2,000 square kilometers of sea. Oman’s Environment Authority confirmed that crude pollution has reached shoreline sediments in the Ras Madrakah area, more than 200 kilometers north of the grounding site, and warned that the slick threatens sensitive habitats including the protected Hallaniyat Archipelago reserve. Environmental advocates and maritime experts have warned that the disaster could worsen dramatically if the increasingly submerged hull breaks open completely, potentially releasing tens of millions of gallons of crude into the Arabian Sea. Recovery efforts remain hindered by monsoon conditions and the vessel’s lack of recognized Western insurance coverage.

PTI’s Akmal Khan Bari moves LHC over police hara…

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Akmal Khan Bari has approached the Lahore High Court (LHC), accusing the Punjab Police of political victimisation and unlawful harassment, while seeking constitutional protection for himself and his family against what he alleges are repeated illegal actions by law enforcement authorities. The constitutional petition was filed through senior lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa, with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab and other relevant officials named as respondents. The petition urges the court to intervene, alleging that police actions have exceeded legal limits and infringed upon the petitioner’s constitutional rights. According to the plea, police officials allegedly raided Akmal Khan Bari’s residence at around 10:00 p.m. on July 27. The petitioner claims that officers entered the premises without lawful justification and subjected his family members to intimidation and harassment during the late-night operation. The petition further states that Bari had previously been arrested in what he describes as a fabricated criminal case. It argues that the latest police action is part of a broader pattern of political victimisation aimed at pressuring him because of his affiliation with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The petitioner maintains that no criminal allegation currently justifies repeated police raids or coercive measures against him or his family. He contends that such actions violate the fundamental rights guaranteed under Pakistan’s Constitution, including the rights to personal liberty, dignity, privacy, and equal protection before the law. According to the petition, law enforcement agencies are legally bound to operate within the framework of the Constitution and cannot exercise their authority arbitrarily or for political purposes. It alleges that the conduct of the respondents is mala fide, unlawful, and inconsistent with constitutional safeguards designed to protect citizens from abuse of power. Bari has requested the Lahore High Court to issue directions restraining the Punjab Police and other respondents from taking any unlawful coercive action against him. He has also sought specific orders preventing police officials from harassing, intimidating, or interfering with members of his family. Additionally, the petition asks the court to direct all respondents to perform their duties strictly in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws, ensuring that no individual is subjected to harassment without legal grounds. The Lahore High Court is expected to take up the constitutional petition for preliminary proceedings, where it will determine whether notices should be issued to the respondents and what further legal steps, if any, are warranted. The Punjab Police had not issued an official response to the allegations at the time this report was filed.
