Pakistan clinch Hockey5s silver, qualify for World Cup

MUSCAT: Pakistan secured the silver medal at the Men’s Asian Hockey5s Championship 2026 and booked a place in the FIH Hockey5s World Cup.

The national team finished runners-up after losing 3-1 to arch-rivals India in the final in Muscat, Oman.

Despite missing out on the title, Pakistan’s overall campaign was a major success. The team produced several strong performances during the tournament and reached the final after competing against some of Asia’s top sides.

The silver medal was enough to secure Pakistan’s qualification for the 2026 Hockey5s World Cup. The achievement gives the national side another opportunity to compete on the global stage.

Pakistan’s campaign was also highlighted by an individual award for forward Adeel. He was named the Player of the Tournament for his impressive performances.

Adeel played an important role in Pakistan’s run to the final. His attacking contributions and consistent performances made him one of the standout players of the competition.

The final, however, belonged to India. The arch-rivals scored three goals while Pakistan managed only one.

Pakistan fought to stay in the contest but could not overturn the deficit. India eventually secured the championship title with a 3-1 victory.

The result did not overshadow Pakistan’s successful tournament campaign. Reaching the final and qualifying for the World Cup are important milestones for a team seeking to rebuild its position in international hockey.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation praised the players and coaching staff for their efforts throughout the championship.

PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani congratulated the national squad on winning the silver medal and securing World Cup qualification.

He also praised Adeel for earning the tournament’s top individual award.

The federation said the achievement reflected the hard work of the players, coaches, management and support staff.

Pakistan’s progress in Hockey5s is being viewed as a positive development for the country’s hockey programme. The shorter format requires speed, quick decision-making and strong attacking play.

The team will now shift its focus towards the FIH Hockey5s World Cup.

The qualification provides Pakistan with an opportunity to test itself against the best teams from around the world.

Nicole Kidman opens up on facing an ‘unknown’ future post-divorce

Nicole Kidman is opening up about the emotional aftermath of her divorce from Keith Urban. She admitted the split has left her feeling both fearful and vulnerable, while also teaching her something valuable. During a new British Vogue cover interview published Thursday, August 13, the 59-year-old reflected on choosing to prioritise her feelings, both personally and professionally. She said her goal isn’t to let logic completely take over her decisions. Kidman explained that she never expected this outcome and had a very different picture of how her life would unfold. She acknowledged simply having to accept where things stand now instead. She said people naturally build plans and expectations for the future, only for life to take a different turn. According to Kidman, adjusting and adapting to that shift becomes necessary once it happens. She was candid about not knowing what lies ahead for her at this point. Kidman described her future as completely unknown right now, admitting that uncertainty comes with real emotional weight. Looking back, the actress admitted she’d once felt very fearful and deeply vulnerable during parts of this process. She described that vulnerability as something that left her feeling exposed. Kidman explained that she was left with essentially two choices when facing that fear. She said she could either avoid confronting it entirely or move forward carrying a strong sense of hope instead. She appears to have chosen the latter, framing her outlook with cautious optimism despite the uncertainty. Her comments offer a rare, personal glimpse into how she’s processing this major life change. Kidman and Urban married in June 2006 in Sydney and share two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. The couple reportedly separated in late 2025 before finalising their divorce in January 2026, citing irreconcilable differences after 19 years together. Since the split, Kidman has remained largely private about the details, offering only limited public reflections. This latest interview marks one of her most candid discussions yet about navigating life after the marriage’s end.

Kawhi Leonard trade delayed as NBA investigation continues

The NBA’s investigation involving Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers remains ongoing, with the league’s review now stretching into its 11th month and potentially continuing into 2027 if no agreement is reached on the findings or any disciplinary action. The investigation centers on allegations that the Clippers may have violated the NBA’s salary cap regulations. League officials launched the probe in September 2025, and it has since become one of the longest-running investigations involving a high-profile player and franchise in recent years. The unresolved case has also affected player movement across the league. A proposed trade that would send Leonard from the Clippers to the Toronto Raptors has been placed on hold until the NBA completes its investigation. While both organizations are still believed to support the deal, league rules prevent the transaction from being finalized while the inquiry remains active. The extended timeline has created uncertainty for both teams as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season. Leonard’s future remains undecided, with the outcome of the investigation expected to play a significant role in determining when, or if, the trade can move forward. Another potential complication involves the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), which could challenge any disciplinary action through arbitration if it believes the NBA lacks sufficient evidence to justify sanctions. Such a move could further prolong the process, adding another layer of legal review before the matter reaches a conclusion. Kawhi Leonard has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he has not violated league rules. The Los Angeles Clippers have also strongly rejected claims that they breached the NBA’s salary cap regulations. In a statement, the franchise said it has fully cooperated with the league throughout the investigation. According to the team, it has participated in numerous interviews, provided extensive documentation, and granted investigators access to staff members in an effort to assist with the review. The Clippers also addressed allegations involving businessman Joe Sanberg and the financial company Aspiration, both of which have been linked to the investigation. The organization denied claims that it directed money to Leonard through Aspiration or any related arrangement. Instead, the franchise argued that it was itself harmed by an alleged fraudulent scheme connected to Sanberg. The team stated that, like several investors, financial institutions, and business partners, it was a victim of fraud rather than a participant in any improper financial activity. According to the Clippers, Sanberg has already been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison, and the organization insists that those events are separate from any suggestion that it attempted to circumvent NBA financial rules. The NBA has not announced when the investigation will conclude or whether any disciplinary measures will ultimately be imposed. Until a final decision is reached, Leonard’s proposed move to Toronto will remain on hold, leaving both franchises awaiting clarity on one of the league’s most closely watched investigations.

France wildfires force 150,000 to evacuate amid he…

A relentless heatwave has triggered massive wildfires across southwestern France, forcing around 150,000 people to evacuate as flames swept through forests and threatened homes in one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. French authorities ordered the complete evacuation of Cap Ferret, a renowned coastal resort, after fast-moving fires engulfed nearly 47,000 acres of forest. Officials said more than 100 homes had been damaged as firefighters continued battling the blaze under extreme weather conditions. The rapidly spreading fire has prompted an extensive emergency response, with President Emmanuel Macron directing the French military to assist firefighting teams in containing the flames and protecting nearby communities. The crisis has also spread beyond France. In neighboring Spain, authorities declared the country’s first-ever national emergency over a wildfire near Madrid, highlighting the growing impact of the ongoing heatwave across southern Europe. According to media reports, the Spanish wildfire has destroyed more than 43 homes, while approximately 19,000 residents living in mountainous areas west of Madrid were ordered to evacuate. More than 2,000 emergency personnel, supported by 10 firefighting aircraft, have been deployed to contain the flames. Officials warned that soaring temperatures, dry vegetation and strong winds have created ideal conditions for wildfires, making firefighting operations increasingly difficult. The latest disaster comes only weeks after France experienced one of its deadliest heatwaves in recent years. According to the country’s national public health agency, 21,674 deaths were recorded between June 17 and July 2, compared with an expected 15,910 deaths under normal conditions. The agency said the period saw 5,764 excess deaths—an increase of 36% above normal mortality levels—underscoring the severe health impact of prolonged extreme heat. Climate experts have repeatedly warned that rising global temperatures are increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves and wildfires across Europe. As emergency crews continue to battle the blazes in France and Spain, authorities remain on high alert, warning residents that worsening weather conditions could fuel further fires in the coming days.

Pakistan’s Commonwealth campaign ends with one medal

Pakistan concluded its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with just one medal, marking the country’s poorest performance at the event in more than three decades. Pakistan sent a contingent of 21 athletes to compete across various disciplines but returned with only a single medal. The country’s sole podium finish came in women’s boxing, where Fatima Zahra secured a medal for Pakistan. The result marks the first time since the 1998 Commonwealth Games that Pakistan has finished the event with only one medal. In 1998, the country won a lone silver medal. It was also Pakistan’s weakest Commonwealth Games performance in the last 36 years. The only poorer result came in 1990, when the national contingent failed to win any medal. Pakistan’s hopes of improving its medal tally on the final day were dashed when judoka Shah Hussain Shah was eliminated in his opening bout, ending the country’s campaign without any further success. Shah Hussain Shah and Olympic javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem had been widely regarded as Pakistan’s strongest medal prospects heading into the Games. However, both athletes fell short of expectations and were unable to secure podium finishes. The disappointing campaign stands in sharp contrast to Pakistan’s performance at the previous Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham four years ago, where the country won a total of seven medals, including two gold medals. The latest results have raised concerns over Pakistan’s overall performance in international multi-sport events, with the country finishing the Glasgow Games with only one medal despite sending athletes in several disciplines.

PMD issues high flood alert as Head Marala records over 205,000 cusecs inflow

SIALKOT: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a High Flood Level Advisory for the River Chenab, warning that high water flows are expected to persist over the next 6 to 8 hours before gradually receding as rainfall over the upper catchments continues to decrease. According to the latest flood monitoring data, Head Marala has reached a high flood level, with water inflow recorded at 205,488 cusecs and outflow at 187,388 cusecs, indicating sustained high water levels in the Chenab River system. The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) said the high flood situation has been caused by heavy rainfall across the upper Chenab catchment, as observed through hydro-meteorological data and the Sialkot weather radar. Although rainfall has now weakened across the major sub-catchments, river flows are expected to remain high for the next several hours before gradually declining. The advisory states that the River Chenab at Marala will likely remain at High Flood Level for the next 6 to 8 hours, provided current rainfall trends continue. It further warns that Khanki and Qadirabad are expected to reach High Flood Level within the next 10 to 12 hours. Besides the Chenab, the Jammu Tawi River is currently experiencing a medium-level flood, with a recorded inflow of 11,868 cusecs, while the Manawar Tawi is flowing at a low flood level, carrying 8,123 cusecs of water. The PMD has cautioned that residents living in riverine (Kacha) areas adjacent to the Chenab may face hazardous conditions and should avoid unnecessary movement near riverbanks and flood-prone locations until water levels begin to recede. The advisory also warns that standing crops, fodder fields and livestock in low-lying floodplain areas remain vulnerable to inundation. Low-lying roads, river crossings, embankment approaches and transport routes close to the river may also experience localized disruptions due to the elevated water levels. The Flood Forecasting Division said it will continue to closely monitor hydro-meteorological conditions, river flows and weather radar observations, issuing further updates if the situation changes. Meanwhile, provincial and district administrations, irrigation departments and other concerned agencies have been urged to maintain enhanced monitoring of river conditions and remain fully prepared for any emergency. The PMD noted that decisions regarding rescue, relief and emergency response will be taken by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the respective district administrations. Authorities have advised residents, particularly those living in riverine and low-lying areas, to stay alert, follow official instructions and avoid unnecessary travel near flood-affected locations until the situation improves.
