Mahira Khan faces backlash over Gaza fundraiser appearance

LONDON: Pakistani actor Mahira Khan has faced criticism on social media after attending a fundraising event in London in support of Palestinians affected by the Gaza crisis.

Khan appeared at the event in a peach outfit by designer Saniya Maskatiya. Videos and pictures from the gathering quickly circulated online.

Many people praised the actor’s appearance and her interaction with attendees. However, some social media users questioned her participation in the event.

Critics focused on Khan’s previous associations with international brands. Some users referred to her work with L’Oréal and Pepsi while discussing her public support for Palestine.

They questioned whether her commercial endorsements were consistent with her stance on the Gaza crisis.

The format of the event also attracted criticism. Some users felt that the gathering appeared to focus partly on Khan’s career and public image rather than concentrating entirely on humanitarian fundraising.

Videos from the event showed Khan engaging with guests and discussing different aspects of her professional life. She also participated in activities on stage.

These moments prompted mixed reactions online.

Some users argued that a humanitarian event should remain focused on the suffering of Palestinians and efforts to support those affected by the conflict.

Others defended Khan’s participation. They said celebrities can use their public platforms to raise awareness and support humanitarian causes.

The debate has also highlighted wider questions about celebrity activism. Many public figures support humanitarian campaigns while maintaining commercial partnerships with major international companies.

Social media users often scrutinise these relationships. The discussion can become particularly intense when the causes involve politically sensitive international conflicts.

Khan has remained an influential figure in Pakistan’s entertainment industry. She has built a large following through her television and film projects.

Her public appearances also regularly attract significant attention. Her fashion choices, professional projects and social activities frequently become topics of discussion online.

The latest controversy is therefore not limited to her appearance at the London fundraiser. It has also sparked a broader debate about the responsibilities of celebrities who publicly support humanitarian causes.

Supporters believe Khan’s presence can help draw attention to the Palestinian cause. Critics, meanwhile, want greater consistency between celebrity activism and commercial endorsements.

New $35 million investment in Lahore unveiled in London

British-Pakistani business group One Homes has unveiled a new $35 million residential development in Lahore at a global keynote and media event held at The May Fair Hotel in London. The event marked the first official presentation of the development, revealing its architecture, interiors, residences and amenity programme ahead of an international launch across the UK, Europe and North America. One Edition marks the British developer’s return to Lahore following the success of One Canal Road, its flagship development in the city, which has now entered the handover phase. Designed by internationally acclaimed Miami-based architect Kobi Karp, One Canal Road established a new benchmark for premium residential development in Lahore and became one of the city’s most recognised addresses. Aqib Hassan, Chief Commercial Officer at One Homes, said: “One Canal Road proved what was possible. We came to Lahore as an international developer, built in the heart of the city and set out to create a new standard in the market.” The development became the foundation for a wider portfolio that now exceeds $435 million across Lahore and Islamabad. One Edition represents the next stage of that journey, shaped not by what has succeeded elsewhere, but by a deeper understanding of Lahore itself. “One Edition doesn’t try to imitate another city. It belongs here in Lahore. It feels like home,” Hassan added. “It’s modern living fused with a celebration of Lahore’s rich culture.” Located on Raiwind Road, approximately ten minutes from Lahore Ring Road, the development sits within an established residential corridor connecting residents to the wider city. Its position places it within convenient reach of leading schools and universities, healthcare, shopping destinations and major residential communities. One Edition has been conceived specifically for overseas Pakistanis, a community One Homes has developed deep expertise in serving across its portfolio. It is designed for those building lives around the world who want to remain connected to Lahore without compromising the quality, comfort and services they have come to expect. Kobi Karp returns as lead architect following his work on One Canal Road. His appointment reflects both the strength of that collaboration and the ambition of what follows. For One Edition, the design intent moves from import to interpretation, drawing on Lahore’s character to create a building that belongs to its city. London-based Jolie Design Studio has been appointed to lead the interiors, marking its first project in Pakistan. Known for a sensory-led philosophy that considers how spaces are lived and experienced, Jolie brings an approach centred on atmosphere, comfort and the details that shape daily life. Aqib said that the One Group has more than $435 million in projects under development across Lahore and Islamabad, with focus on overseas Pakistanis.

HRCP, PFUJ slam new foreign media rules

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) have strongly criticised the government’s newly introduced Foreign Media Facilitation Guidelines 2026, describing the policy as a serious threat to press freedom and independent journalism. The criticism comes after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting reminded foreign media organisations that journalists must obtain prior government approval before carrying out reporting assignments outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi under the revised External Publicity Guidelines. The ministry issued the reminder following concerns over international coverage related to Azad Jammu and Kashmir. In a statement, the HRCP said the new guidelines could discourage independent reporting on issues of public interest instead of facilitating journalistic work. The commission expressed concern that the policy reflects an increasing trend of restrictions on media freedom, including tighter controls on reporting and growing administrative hurdles for journalists. According to the rights body, requiring official permission before reporting from many parts of the country could create an atmosphere where critical journalism is discouraged. It urged the government to withdraw the new measures and ensure protection of freedom of expression in line with constitutional guarantees and international commitments. The PFUJ also condemned the notification, calling it a direct attack on press freedom. The journalists’ union argued that the policy not only limits the movement of foreign correspondents but also places restrictions on Pakistani journalists working for international media organisations. PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari questioned how journalists would be able to perform their professional responsibilities if access to large parts of the country is restricted. They warned that the policy could affect Pakistan’s international reputation and further weaken its standing in global press freedom rankings. The union also expressed concern that Pakistani journalists employed by foreign media organisations could face job losses if they are prevented from reporting from different regions of the country.

Sohail Afridi denied meeting Imran at Adiala Jail

RAWALPINDI: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was stopped from meeting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on Thursday. Afridi reached the Medicine Factory checkpoint on Adiala Road with several PTI leaders and lawmakers. Police stopped the delegation from moving towards the prison. The chief minister was accompanied by Mena Khan, Shafi Jan, Ahad Shah, Abdul Salam Afridi and Shahid Khattak. Police had earlier blocked Adiala Road from Gorakhpur towards the jail. Traffic was diverted to alternative routes. Afridi questioned the SHO Saddar Beroni about the restrictions. He also asked what instructions had been issued to the authorities. The chief minister remained at the checkpoint until the scheduled meeting time ended. He and the accompanying PTI leaders were not allowed to meet Imran. After the delegation left, police removed the barriers. Traffic on Adiala Road was restored. Speaking to the media, Afridi announced a protest call if he was not allowed to meet the PTI founder. He said PTI workers would come out across the country at 10pm. He urged them to gather at major intersections while carrying the national and party flags. Afridi also asked workers to stay focused on the party’s planned march towards Islamabad on September 27. He claimed that the PTI planned to bring two million people to Islamabad. He said the number could be even higher. The chief minister said the authorities should allow a meeting with Imran before September 28 if they wanted to reduce political tensions. Afridi also criticised the treatment of Imran and PTI since 2022. He accused the authorities of pushing the country towards instability because of political differences and stubbornness. He further criticised other political parties and questioned their role in the country’s political situation. The latest incident comes amid growing concern within PTI over Imran’s health and access to him. The party has repeatedly demanded that its founder be allowed to meet family members, lawyers and party leaders. Imran has remained incarcerated at Adiala Jail since 2023. His wife, Bushra Bibi, is also imprisoned. The PTI founder has faced several legal cases during his imprisonment. He and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana-II case in December 2025. PTI has also raised concerns over Imran’s eyesight and medical treatment. Earlier this year, doctors from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences examined him at the jail. PIMS later confirmed that he had received an anti-VEGF injection for a condition affecting his right eye. A later medical examination indicated improvement in his eyesight following treatment. Imran’s sisters and PTI supporters have also held regular gatherings outside Adiala Jail on designated meeting days. However, access to the former prime minister has remained restricted in recent months. Afridi’s unsuccessful visit on Thursday is likely to further intensify the political confrontation between PTI and the authorities.

Abu Dhabi T10 League faces big changes after scandals

The Abu Dhabi T10 League is preparing for a major transformation as it heads towards its 10th season, with new ownership and stronger institutional oversight expected to reshape the tournament following a series of controversies. The league, launched in 2017 as the world’s first major T10 cricket competition, has attracted international players and significant attention for its fast-paced format. However, allegations and investigations linked to corruption, payment disputes involving players and frequent changes in franchise ownership have affected its reputation in recent years. In response to these challenges, the Abu Dhabi government has taken a more direct role in the competition. Through the Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub, the government has acquired a majority stake in the league, a move aimed at bringing greater stability and long-term planning to the tournament. The authorities are now seeking new franchise owners through a competitive bidding process being conducted under the supervision of Deloitte. Final offers are expected to be submitted later this week, potentially marking a new chapter for the league. Abu Dhabi Sports Council chief executive Matt Boucher said the focus is on creating institutional stability and establishing longer-term agreements with franchise owners. The move is expected to provide teams with greater certainty while helping the competition strengthen its commercial and sporting foundations. Despite the planned restructuring, officials have indicated that the league will retain its current eight-team format. There are no immediate plans to increase the number of franchises, while expansion over the next three years is also not considered a priority. With fresh ownership, tighter management and a focus on stability, the Abu Dhabi T10 League now hopes to rebuild its credibility and establish itself as a sustainable annual cricket competition in the region.
