Trump and Republicans face tough test as US midterm elections draw closer

With just 100 days remaining before Americans head to the polls for the midterm elections, President Donald Trump and the Republican Party are preparing for what could become one of the biggest political challenges of his presidency. While Trump himself will not be on the ballot on November 3, the outcome of the elections is expected to shape the final years of his administration. Recent opinion surveys suggest Democrats are well positioned to regain control of the House of Representatives, while Republicans are also facing an increasingly competitive fight to maintain their majority in the Senate.

A Democratic victory in the House would dramatically shift the balance of power in Washington. It would allow the party to lead key congressional committees and launch investigations into the Trump administration through subpoena powers. Such authority could open the door to fresh inquiries into government decisions and even fuel discussions about another attempt to impeach the president. Republicans currently hold only a slim majority in the House, making it easier for Democrats to take control if just a small number of seats change hands.

Political analysts say several national issues are making the election environment more difficult for Republicans. Rising living costs remain one of the biggest concerns among voters. Fuel prices have climbed above four dollars per gallon following disruptions in global energy markets linked to the conflict with Iran. Inflation has remained stubbornly high while interest rates continue to place pressure on households and businesses. Surveys also indicate that voters are increasingly trusting Democrats over Republicans on issues such as inflation, healthcare and even immigration, which has traditionally been considered one of the Republican Party’s strongest campaign issues.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries recently criticized the Trump administration’s economic record and announced a campaign focused on lowering the cost of groceries, gasoline, housing and medical care. Republicans, however, argue that voters will have a clear choice between what they describe as practical conservative policies and a Democratic Party they say has moved further to the left. Their campaign is expected to emphasize border security, tax reductions and public safety while attempting to link Democratic candidates with progressive policies that they believe are unpopular among moderate voters.

At the same time, Republicans are pursuing strategies that could improve their chances despite difficult polling numbers. One major effort has involved redrawing congressional district boundaries. Both major parties have participated in redistricting, but experts believe Republicans may benefit more from the latest changes. Some projections suggest the new electoral maps could provide Republicans with an advantage of several House seats, which may prove crucial in what is expected to be another closely contested election. Political scientist Sarah Binder of George Washington University said the new district maps have significantly reduced the number of truly competitive House races, limiting the opportunities available to Democratic candidates in some areas.

Republicans also enter the final months of campaigning with a financial edge. Party organizations and allied groups have reportedly raised tens of millions of dollars more than their Democratic rivals, giving them greater resources to advertise, organize campaigns and support candidates across the country.

The battle for the Senate is expected to be just as important. Republicans currently control the chamber with a 53 to 47 majority. Democrats need to gain four seats to take control, although current forecasts suggest Republicans remain slight favorites to keep the Senate. Some projections indicate the chamber could end in a 50 to 50 split, allowing Vice President JD Vance to cast deciding votes whenever necessary.

For President Trump, losing the House while keeping the Senate would still create major obstacles for the remainder of his term. His legislative agenda would likely face repeated roadblocks, while Democratic lawmakers could use committee hearings to closely examine issues including the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict, government ethics and election related policies.

Political analyst Chuck Todd said Republicans have seen their advantage in the Senate narrow considerably over recent months. He also predicted Democrats could gain between 10 and 25 seats in the House if current political trends continue. Recent polling from Economist and YouGov shows Trump’s approval rating remains low, with only 36 percent of Americans approving of his performance as president. Analysts note that historically, presidents with approval ratings below 45 percent almost always see their party lose seats during midterm elections. Whether Republicans can limit those losses or face a much larger defeat will become clear when Americans cast their votes in November.

TTP-linked suspect arrested in Karachi joint operation, weapons and explosives recovered

KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers (Sindh), in coordination with the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), have arrested a suspected militant allegedly affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during an intelligence-based operation in Karachi, according to the Rangers spokesperson. The security agencies also recovered weapons and explosives from the suspect, who was allegedly involved in collecting funds for a TTP-linked faction and transferring money to its leadership, the spokesperson said on Sunday. The suspect was identified as Shahzad alias Dunger and was taken into custody during a joint operation conducted in the Jacob Lines area of Jamshed Town. Suspect allegedly joined TTP-linked group in 2025 According to the Rangers, Shahzad became associated with the Mansoor group of the TTP in 2025 after allegedly being influenced by the group’s leader, Mansoor. Investigators believe that the suspect was subsequently assigned the task of generating financial resources for the organisation in Karachi. The Rangers spokesperson said Shahzad allegedly approached individuals in the Manghopir area and persuaded them to make regular monthly payments to the militant group. The collected funds were then allegedly transferred to Waziristan through Easypaisa accounts provided by Din Muhammad, an alleged associate of Mansoor who was based in Tank. During interrogation, Shahzad reportedly told investigators that the money was ultimately transferred to Mansoor and used to support the group’s militant activities. Alleged meetings with militant leader The Rangers said the suspect had travelled to Waziristan several times and held clandestine meetings with Mansoor. According to the investigation, Shahzad allegedly met Mansoor in Birmal in June 2026, where he was instructed to expand and strengthen the group’s network in Karachi. The alleged objectives included carrying out terrorist activities and raising money through extortion, the Rangers said. Following the meeting, Mansoor allegedly arranged for weapons and explosives to be delivered to Shahzad through another unidentified associate. Security officials said the recovered material was allegedly intended for use in planned attacks against sensitive installations and locations in Karachi. Raids launched to trace other suspects The Rangers said further investigations were underway and raids were being conducted at different locations to identify and arrest other members of the suspected network. The operation comes amid continued efforts by law-enforcement and security agencies to disrupt militant financing, recruitment and operational networks in Karachi. Officials have increasingly focused on financial channels used by militant organisations, as investigators seek to prevent funds from reaching groups involved in terrorism. Karachi has witnessed several major security incidents The latest arrest comes against the backdrop of a series of major terrorist and militant attacks in Karachi in recent years. On June 28, security forces foiled an attempted attack on a Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) camp in the city. Three Rangers personnel were killed and four others were injured in the incident. According to the military’s media wing, the assault was carried out by militants described as “Khwarij belonging to Indian proxy, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar”. The attackers reportedly detonated an explosive at the main gate of the Rangers camp before attempting to penetrate the security perimeter. Security personnel resisted the assault, killing three attackers and capturing another militant in an injured condition. The captured suspect was identified as an Afghan national. The incident was described as one of the most serious attacks targeting security personnel in Karachi in recent years. Previous attacks raised security concerns Karachi has experienced several significant security incidents over the past few years, highlighting the continuing challenges faced by law-enforcement agencies in the country’s largest city. In April 2022, a suicide bombing outside Karachi University’s Confucius Institute killed several people, including Chinese nationals. The attack was claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). In February 2023, militants launched an assault on the Karachi Police Office, leading to a prolonged security operation before the attackers were neutralised. Another major incident occurred in October 2024, when a bombing near Karachi Airport targeted a convoy and killed several people, including Chinese engineers. The incident further intensified concerns over the security of foreign nationals and critical infrastructure in the city. Against this backdrop, security agencies have continued intelligence-based operations aimed at dismantling militant networks before they can carry out attacks.

Kanye West calls Yeezy ‘the Apple of clothing’ after sellout

Kanye West is once again making bold claims about his fashion brand. The rapper and designer recently took to X to declare that no other fashion label can match Yeezy’s cultural pull. He claimed that regardless of how large a fashion brand becomes, none can draw a crowd of 120,000 people in a single night the way Yeezy can. The comment quickly drew attention online. West’s statement came as he celebrated a major milestone for the brand, tied to the launch of its new YS-01 slides. The product, released in multiple colourways, reportedly sold out almost immediately after going live. Riding that momentum, West doubled down on his claims about Yeezy’s broader cultural influence. He described the brand as essentially the Apple of the clothing world. This is not the first time West has drawn that particular comparison. Back in 2020, during an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he made a similar point about his ambitions for the label. At the time, he explained that creating something akin to Apple in the fashion space, or the next Gap, would require an entirely new kind of invention. He said the goal was to build something so effective it eventually becomes invisible, simply accepted as the norm rather than credited as an innovation. West’s latest comments reflect that same long-standing vision, tying the brand’s current commercial momentum back to the broader ambition he has spoken about for years. Whether or not Yeezy can sustain that level of cultural dominance long-term remains to be seen, but for now, the rapid sellout of its latest product appears to support at least part of his claim. With Yeezy continuing to generate buzz around each new release, West shows no signs of dialing back his confidence in the brand’s staying power.

Cameroonian President Paul Biya reshuffles military leadership amidst prolonged absence in Switzerland

Cameroon’s 93-year-old President, Paul Biya, the world’s oldest sitting head of state, has enacted a strategic reshuffle of the country’s military leadership from abroad, issuing decrees to promote senior officers and appoint new commanders while remaining in Geneva, Switzerland. Among the key appointments, Biya promoted five colonels to the rank of brigadier general. Notably, Brigadier General Raymond Jean Charles Beko’o Abondo was reappointed to lead the elite Presidential Guard, an essential security unit responsible for the president’s personal protection that he has commanded since 2013. The administrative shifts coincide with growing domestic anxiety regarding Biya’s absence from Cameroon, which has extended to nearly two months following his departure on 7 June for what officials termed a “brief private stay”. Opponents and civil society groups have voiced concern over an institutional vacuum, noting that a newly created vice-presidential seat remains vacant and a promised cabinet overhaul has yet to materialise. Government representatives, including Communication Minister René Emmanuel Sadi, dismissed claims of administrative paralysis or health crises, maintaining that the president remains fully operational and continues to sign official decrees and financial agreements from abroad.
