Health Professionals, Community leaders strongly condemn transfer of renowned surgeon

THATTA — Senior medical professionals and community representatives have strongly condemned the sudden transfer of eminent surgeon Professor Dr. Mashooque Ali Hajani from Civil Hospital Makli to Civil Hospital Sujawal, calling the decision an unjustified move and a conspiracy against the hospital’s recent healthcare advancements.

In a joint statement, prominent health leaders—including Dr. Sugra Parveen Uqaili, Dr. Ahmed Khan Zardari, Dr. Habib Jokhio, and Dr. Gul Qazi—expressed grave concern over the transfer, warning that it will derail the major improvements made in the Surgical Ward and cause severe hardship to poor and underprivileged patients who rely heavily on these services.
The medical fraternity pointed out that prior to Dr. Hajani’s arrival, the surgical unit in Thatta District was severely under-resourced and largely limited to minor procedures such as circumcisions. Through Dr.Mashoque’s tireless dedication and technical expertise, the department was rebuilt into a fully functional unit capable of performing major and complex operations, including laparotomies, directly within the district.
“The transfer of such a sincere, highly capable, and dedicated surgeon is detrimental to both the institution and the public interest,” the statement read. “Depriving Civil Hospital Makli of his services will only result in medical delays and hardship for patients who cannot afford private or out-of-district care.”
The delegation has urgently appealed to the senior leadership of the Health Department and relevant authorities to immediately revoke the transfer order, allowing Professor Dr. Mashooque Ali Hajani to continue his transformative work at Civil Hospital Makli.

Raja Nasir Abbas urges Govt to implement Supreme C…

Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Raja Nasir Abbas, has said that the government is legally bound to implement the Supreme Court’s decision and expressed hope that the ruling would be implemented today. Speaking during a Senate session, Raja Nasir Abbas said that the Supreme Court’s decision had created a positive atmosphere and provided an opportunity for political forces to move closer to one another. He noted that there had been signs of improvement in the political environment following the court’s ruling. According to the opposition leader, the government is obligated to respect and implement decisions issued by the country’s highest court. He said that the opposition expected the government to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision without further delay. Raja Nasir Abbas emphasized that implementation of the court’s ruling could help maintain a positive political atmosphere. He said that after the Supreme Court decision, the situation appeared to be improving and political sides were gradually coming closer together. He suggested that developments could lead to greater political understanding if the government continued to act responsibly. During his speech, the opposition leader also raised concerns about the health and treatment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and physician Dr Yasmin Rashid, who is currently being held at Kot Lakhpat Jail. Raja Nasir Abbas said that it was the government’s responsibility to protect the health and well-being of people in its custody. He highlighted Yasmin Rashid’s medical condition and expressed concern about the circumstances in which she was being held. According to Abbas, Dr Yasmin Rashid is a cancer patient and has also continued to provide medical assistance to other people even while in prison. He said that despite facing serious health challenges herself, she had remained committed to helping others. The opposition leader further stated that doctors had raised concerns about a problem involving Yasmin Rashid’s spinal vertebrae. He said medical professionals had warned that her condition could become serious and that she might even lose the ability to walk. Abbas argued that, given her medical condition, Yasmin Rashid should not be kept in prison. He called on the government to take medical advice seriously and ensure that prisoners suffering from serious illnesses receive appropriate healthcare. He also expressed concern about conditions inside the prison, particularly the availability of electricity. According to him, there are periods of four hours or more during which electricity is unavailable in the jail. He suggested that such conditions could further worsen the difficulties faced by prisoners, particularly those with serious medical conditions. The opposition leader’s remarks come amid broader political discussions over the treatment of political prisoners and the implementation of judicial decisions. His statement reflects the opposition’s expectation that the government should follow court orders while also ensuring that prisoners receive adequate medical care. Raja Nasir Abbas maintained that respecting judicial decisions and protecting prisoners’ health were both important responsibilities of the state. He urged the government to take immediate steps to address the concerns raised regarding Yasmin Rashid and to ensure that her medical needs are properly addressed. He also expressed optimism that the Supreme Court’s decision could help create a more constructive political environment. According to him, cooperation and implementation of the court’s ruling could contribute to reducing political tensions and improving relations between the government and opposition. The opposition leader concluded by emphasizing the importance of the government fulfilling its legal responsibilities and protecting the health and dignity of individuals in its custody.

UN urges evacuation of 6,000 sailors stranded in S…

GENEVA: The United Nations has called for the immediate evacuation and repatriation of nearly 6,000 sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the escalating conflict in the Middle East is placing thousands of civilian seafarers in increasing danger. Speaking in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, through his spokesperson Shabia Mantoo, urged all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the safety of commercial shipping crews caught in the crisis. “Parties to the conflict should urgently work to facilitate safe passage for stranded seafarers to safely evacuate and disembark, as well as ensure the delivery of critical supplies,” Mantoo told reporters, highlighting the growing humanitarian concerns in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital global shipping route, handling a significant portion of the world’s oil exports. However, escalating military tensions have disrupted maritime traffic, leaving thousands of sailors aboard commercial vessels unable to safely continue their journeys or return home. The UN warned that many crews have remained at sea for extended periods, facing uncertainty over security conditions while access to food, medical assistance, and other essential supplies becomes increasingly challenging. Human rights officials stressed that civilian seafarers should not become casualties of geopolitical conflicts and called on all sides to respect international humanitarian and maritime law by ensuring safe navigation and humanitarian access. Maritime experts say prolonged disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could have far-reaching consequences beyond the humanitarian crisis, affecting global energy supplies, international trade, and shipping costs. The UN’s appeal comes as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent further escalation in the region. While governments work to ease tensions, the world body has urged immediate action to protect the thousands of sailors still stranded at sea, emphasizing that humanitarian needs must remain a priority regardless of the ongoing conflict.

PPP rejects Azad Kashmir election results, alleges…

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari has strongly rejected the election results, declaring that his party will not accept what he described as a flawed and manipulated electoral process. Addressing a press conference in Muzaffarabad, Bukhari alleged that the elections were marred by widespread irregularities, voter manipulation, and violence, making them neither free nor fair. Bukhari claimed that the PPP possesses evidence of electoral misconduct. According to him, ballot papers were allegedly distributed among supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and party workers were seen providing ballot papers outside polling stations. He argued that such practices seriously undermined the credibility of the electoral process and violated the principles of transparent and democratic elections. Speaking to journalists, Bukhari questioned the fairness of the election, stating that a truly transparent election should allow voters to cast their ballots freely without interference or manipulation. He accused the authorities and political rivals of attempting to ensure victory for their preferred candidates through unfair means. As a result, he emphasized that the PPP does not recognize these elections as free and fair and therefore refuses to accept the announced results. The PPP leader also made serious allegations against a PML-N candidate, claiming that the individual was involved in a murder case. He urged the relevant law enforcement agencies and government institutions to take immediate notice of the matter and ensure that those responsible are arrested and brought to justice. According to Bukhari, allowing such individuals to contest elections raises serious concerns about the rule of law and the integrity of the democratic process. Bukhari further alleged that law and order in Azad Jammu and Kashmir had significantly deteriorated. He pointed to what he described as increasing incidents of violence and political intimidation during the election period. Referring to recent events, he claimed that even the President of Azad Kashmir had been attacked, calling it evidence of the worsening security situation and the failure of the authorities to maintain peace. He also highlighted attacks on members of his own party. Bukhari stated that PPP Member of the National Assembly Salahuddin Junejo was attacked, while PPP worker Mushtaq Hussain Shah was killed. He described these incidents as tragic examples of political violence and intimidation aimed at discouraging democratic participation. Furthermore, he alleged that in constituency LA-31, the PPP candidate was attacked by PML-N workers and was subsequently hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the incident. Describing the elections as fraudulent and heavily rigged, Bukhari argued that the overall electoral environment was neither peaceful nor impartial. He maintained that the democratic rights of voters had been compromised and that the results failed to reflect the genuine will of the people. He stressed that elections conducted under such circumstances cannot earn public confidence or democratic legitimacy. Concluding his remarks, Bukhari stated that governments established through coercion and manipulation cannot gain lasting public acceptance. He reaffirmed that the PPP respects the will of the people and believes that democratic principles must always be upheld. However, he alleged that the public mandate, particularly in the Mirpur Division, had not been respected. According to Bukhari, the people of Azad Kashmir had rejected the PML-N, and the election results did not accurately represent the voters’ true choice.

  • Tarar links AJK unrest to foreign funded agenda

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on Tuesday that the recent protests by the banned Joint Awami Action Committee in Azad Jammu and Kashmir were not peaceful. He alleged that militant groups pursuing a foreign agenda, backed by funding from India, were involved in the unrest. Earlier the same day, AJK Information Secretary Muhammad Rashid Hanif said many protesters taking part in the JAAC demonstrations were linked to Fitna Al Khawarij. This is the term Pakistani authorities use for militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan. Speaking at a press conference, Hanif said illegal and violent acts had taken place in AJK, aimed at disrupting the ongoing phases of the region’s elections. He said maintaining law and order and protecting the democratic process remains the state’s core duty, and the state is capable of doing so. Hanif said the JAAC protests were not made up of ordinary citizens alone. He played a video showing masked gunmen standing on a rooftop as evidence. He said common protesters were fewer in number, while armed militants linked to Fitna Al Khawarij were present in significant numbers. He urged people to distance themselves from these elements and said the government would issue public appeals soon. He also alleged that anti-state groups were using women and children as human shields, and that misleading videos calling this a human rights movement were being spread on social media. AJK police spokesperson DIG Irfan Kashfi said these armed individuals would be treated as militants, not peaceful protesters, given their possession of automatic weapons, M-4 rifles, AK-47s, and reportedly sniper rifles. He said one police official was killed and five others injured in recent clashes. One suspect, described as a foreign national acting as a sniper, was arrested in Rawalakot with a military-grade weapon in his possession. Kashfi said security forces were acting purely in self-defence and to protect the public, and assured citizens that militants would not be allowed to capture Rawalakot or any other area. AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore said the unrest had been planned for weeks and described the march toward Muzaffarabad during the elections as a scheme to trigger mass unrest. He appealed to the public to stay away from the protesters, alleging they were using civilians as human shields. The JAAC was declared a banned organisation on June 5 after weeks of protests demanding the abolition of 12 reserved refugee seats in the AJK assembly. Authorities have since arrested many of its leaders and placed 147 activists under anti-terrorism watch.
