‘Sick of It All’ frontman Lou Koller dies at 59

Lou Koller, the powerful voice behind New York hardcore legends, ‘Sick of It All’, has died at the age of 59. The news was confirmed by his bandmates through an emotional statement posted on Instagram on Friday, July 24.

The band described the loss as overwhelming, telling fans across the globe that their brother and frontman had passed. They called it a moment of unbelievable sadness for everyone connected to the hardcore scene that Koller helped shape for decades.

The timing carries extra weight. This year was set to mark ‘Sick of It All’s’ 40th anniversary, a milestone the band had been gearing up to celebrate. His bandmates reflected on how Koller’s loyalty, drive, and passion never wavered across four decades together, calling him both a cherished friend and a defining voice of the genre.

Beyond the music, it was his presence that left the deepest impression. According to the statement, Koller had a rare gift for lifting the mood at every show, often with nothing more than a grin and a well-timed sarcastic remark. That charm reportedly won him fans in every country the band toured, cutting across cultures and borders in a way few frontmen manage.

The statement also turned toward gratitude, thanking everyone who had contributed to Koller’s medical fund during his illness. His bandmates said the outpouring of support helped him feel cared for and valued throughout a difficult two-year battle. They noted that his fight had now come to an end, and that he could finally find rest. The message closed with hope that Koller could somehow still sense the lasting, positive impact he had made on the world around him.

Koller had been diagnosed with esophageal adenocarcinoma in June 2024, a diagnosis that set off a prolonged and difficult health battle. Despite the illness, he remained a central figure in the hardcore community, with fans rallying behind him throughout his treatment.

‘Sick of It All’ emerged from New York in the mid-1980s and became one of the most influential acts in hardcore punk, known for their raw energy and uncompromising sound. Koller’s voice was at the center of that identity for nearly the band’s entire existence.

As tributes continue to pour in from musicians and fans worldwide, the hardcore community is left mourning not just a frontman, but a figure who embodied the spirit of the scene itself.

Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott welcome baby girl together

Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott have entered an exciting new chapter as parents, welcoming their first child together. The couple has reportedly welcomed a baby girl, marking a major milestone in their relationship. The happy news came to light after Plaza was spotted in New York City on Sunday, August 9, carrying her newborn in a baby sling. The actress was seen in a relaxed casual look as she stepped out wearing a black tank top, jeans and her hair pulled into a high ponytail. She appeared to be carrying the newborn after attending Christopher Abbott’s final performance in the Broadway production Death of a Salesman. According to reports, Plaza gave birth to the couple’s daughter during the final week of July 2026. The arrival comes just months after the couple publicly confirmed that they were expecting their first child. Plaza’s pregnancy was officially revealed in April, when her representative confirmed the news. At the time, an insider described the pregnancy as a “beautiful surprise” following an emotional year for the actress and said that Plaza and Abbott felt extremely blessed about starting a family together. The couple later made their red carpet debut as an expecting pair at the 2026 Tony Awards on June 7. The event, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, gave fans their first major public glimpse of Plaza’s growing baby bump. Although Plaza and Abbott have kept much of their relationship away from the spotlight, their romance reportedly began after years of professional connections. The two previously worked together on the 2020 film Black Bear and later reunited for the 2023 Broadway revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Their relationship reportedly became public in 2025, with the pair gradually stepping out together before announcing their pregnancy the following year. For Plaza, the birth of her daughter represents an important new beginning after a difficult period in her personal life. Before her relationship with Abbott, the Parks and Recreation star was married to filmmaker Jeff Baena. The former couple separated in 2024 after several years together. Baena died in 2025. Since then, Plaza has largely maintained a private approach to her personal life while continuing to focus on her acting career. Abbott, meanwhile, has remained busy with his professional commitments, including his Broadway role in Death of a Salesman. His final performance in the production appears to have coincided with a particularly memorable moment for the couple, as Plaza was photographed carrying their newborn shortly afterward. The arrival of their baby girl adds another special milestone to Plaza and Abbott’s evolving relationship. While neither star has publicly shared extensive details about their daughter, fans are celebrating the couple’s reported new journey into parenthood.

Ronaldo hints at retirement as 1,000-goal dream nears

LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo has given his clearest indication yet that the end of his extraordinary football career could be approaching, saying the upcoming season may be his final one as a professional. The 41-year-old Portugal captain, however, appears determined to make his final chapter memorable. Ronaldo is chasing the extraordinary milestone of 1,000 goals and wants to leave the sport with a legacy that reflects more than two decades at the highest level. “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo told Vogue in an interview published on Sunday. Ronaldo made his senior debut for Sporting CP in 2002 and has since built one of the most decorated careers in football history. He has played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus before continuing his career with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has also become one of international football’s most prolific scorers with Portugal. Ronaldo currently has 976 goals for club and country, leaving him just 24 goals short of the unprecedented 1,000-goal mark. Reaching that figure before retirement would add another remarkable achievement to a career already filled with records. Yet one major prize remains missing from his collection: the FIFA World Cup. Portugal’s failure to win the 2026 tournament means Ronaldo will likely finish his international career without lifting football’s biggest trophy. Despite his latest comments, Ronaldo has not announced a specific retirement date, leaving open the possibility that he could continue beyond the coming season. The veteran forward has also begun thinking about life away from football. He said he has plenty of interests that could keep him occupied once he finally steps away from the game. Ronaldo mentioned travelling more, playing padel and enjoying the rewards of a career built on years of discipline and sacrifice. For now, though, his focus remains on football — and perhaps the most eye-catching target of all: becoming the first player to reach 1,000 career goals.

K-P assembly rejects move to absorb Haripur, Abbot…

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has unanimously rejected any reported move to separate Haripur and Abbottabad from the province and place them under the administrative control of Islamabad, warning that any such attempt would undermine provincial autonomy and constitutional rights. The resolution was adopted during Friday’s session after Provincial Minister Akbar Ayub presented a strongly worded motion opposing any proposal by the federal government to alter the status of K-P districts, particularly Haripur and Abbottabad. The House declared that all districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are an integral part of the province and cannot be separated under any circumstances. It maintained that changing provincial boundaries for administrative, political or economic purposes, or to gain control over natural resources, would violate the constitutional rights of the province and its people. The resolution specifically highlighted K-P’s water resources, hydropower facilities, mineral wealth, forests and other natural assets, stating that these resources belong constitutionally to the province and its people. Any attempt, directly or indirectly, to take control of these resources was described as unacceptable. The provincial legislature called on the federal government to immediately drop any proposal concerning the separation of the districts and respect the existing constitutional, geographical and administrative status of K-P. The House also urged political parties, lawmakers, constitutional bodies, lawyers, civil society, young people and the media to maintain a united position in protecting the province’s territorial integrity, autonomy and public interests. During the same session, PPP lawmaker Mehr Sultana raised concerns over the lack of effective rules requiring doctors to prescribe medicines using generic names rather than specific brands. She also called for computerized prescriptions to become mandatory, pointing out that unclear handwritten prescriptions can create difficulties for patients and increase the risk of errors. She urged the provincial government to introduce legislation or regulations addressing both issues, with the aim of improving prescription practices and protecting patients.

Justin Langer breaks silence on England Test coach rumours

Former Australia head coach Justin Langer has dismissed speculation linking him with England’s vacant Test coaching position, saying he has not been contacted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Langer’s name has been widely mentioned as one of the possible candidates after England began searching for a new Test coach following Brendon McCullum’s exit from the role. Despite the growing rumours, the former Australian opener made it clear that no discussions have taken place. Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Langer addressed the reports and denied that the ECB had approached him about the position. “I haven’t heard from anyone,” Langer said. “A lot of what you read is simply speculation and rumours.” Although he ruled out any current talks with England, Langer admitted that the position is among the most sought-after coaching jobs in international cricket. He believes any experienced coach would naturally be interested in considering such an opportunity if it became available. According to Langer, there are only a handful of coaching positions that stand above the rest in world cricket. He identified the head coaching roles of Australia, India and England as the biggest jobs in the game, while stressing that discussions about his future remain entirely hypothetical. The 54-year-old also described coaching as a professional career in which individuals regularly assess opportunities that may arise. However, he emphasized that there has been no contact regarding England’s vacancy. England are currently looking for a new Test coach after deciding to return to a split-coaching structure. Under the revised setup, Brendon McCullum will continue overseeing England’s white-ball teams, while a separate coach will take charge of the Test side. Several prominent names have reportedly been linked with the position. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is believed to be among the leading contenders, while former England spinner Richard Dawson, ex-England batter Jonathan Trott and Australian coach Tom Moody have also been mentioned as possible candidates. Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has reportedly emerged as an option for an interim appointment ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin on August 19. Meanwhile, former England head coach Andy Flower has already ruled himself out of contention. Flower recently stated that he remains fully committed to his coaching responsibilities with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and London Spirit, making it unlikely that he will return to the England setup. Langer also shared his thoughts on the qualities required for whoever eventually takes over England’s Test team. He believes the successful candidate will need to work closely with McCullum under the new coaching structure while maintaining a clear vision and strong leadership. He added that building an effective support staff and creating a unified direction for the team will be essential for long-term success. While Langer said he has no idea who will ultimately be appointed, he believes the next England Test coach will face an important challenge in guiding one of cricket’s leading sides through a new era.

Pakistan slams Houthi threats to Saudi Arabia

Pakistan has strongly condemned the Houthi militia’s threats against Saudi Arabia and commercial shipping in the Red Sea, describing the actions as a serious threat to regional peace, international trade and maritime security. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Foreign Office said Pakistan unequivocally rejects the continued threats directed at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and vessels involved in lawful commercial activities. It stressed that freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted movement of global trade must be protected at all costs. The statement came after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia. The group declared that ships linked to the kingdom could become targets, saying the move was a response to what it described as Saudi actions in Yemen. Pakistan said any threat to commercial shipping violates international law and undermines the rules-based maritime order. The Foreign Office warned that such actions not only endanger regional security but also put global commerce and energy supplies at risk. Islamabad expressed particular concern over reports that commercial vessels trading with Saudi Arabia could be targeted. The Foreign Office said attacks or threats against civilian shipping are unacceptable and could have serious consequences for international trade. Reaffirming its commitment to protecting national interests, Pakistan warned that any hostile act against Pakistani-flagged ships or Pakistan’s maritime assets would be treated as a grave threat to the country’s sovereignty and national security. The statement added that Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures, including lawful self-defense under the United Nations Charter and international law, to protect its maritime interests if required. Pakistan also voiced concern over attempts to widen the ongoing Middle East conflict by dragging Saudi Arabia into the regional confrontation. The Foreign Office reiterated Islamabad’s unwavering support for the security, sovereignty, territorial integrity and prosperity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The government urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation. It called for dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful solutions to resolve disputes while emphasizing the importance of protecting international shipping routes. The Foreign Office stressed that ensuring the safety of maritime trade is essential for global economic stability. It said uninterrupted navigation through international waterways is critical for maintaining the flow of energy supplies and commercial goods across the world. The Houthi announcement has raised fresh concerns among governments and shipping companies over the security of the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait serves as a vital gateway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is a key route for oil exports from the Gulf to international markets.
