Modi proposes fast-track courts to quell rising ‘cockroach’ youth protests

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to establish fast-track courts to swiftly punish officials involved in examination paper leaks, attempting to contain a widespread youth-led protest movement that has rocked New Delhi and disrupted Parliament. Posting on X in his first public remarks on the crisis, Modi declared that “those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared”.

The satirical “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP), coined after India’s top judge reportedly likened unemployed youths to “cockroaches”, promptly rejected Modi’s proposal as a superficial “Band-aid” measure. The CJP continues to demand  educational reforms and the immediate resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who has faced intense pressure following 152 recorded paper leaks over the past decade.

The movement has escalated rapidly across India, drawing tens of thousands of demonstrators to New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and prompting solidarity marches in cities including Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Opposition parties, led by Rahul Gandhi, have forced shutdowns in Parliament while demanding that Modi apologise and dismiss Pradhan, as government officials accuse the opposition of exploiting student grievances for political leverage.

Under the new policy, visa restrictions can be imposed on foreign nationals found responsible for or complicit in cybercrime and cyber-enabled criminal activities. In certain cases, immediate family members of individuals involved in such activities may also face visa restrictions. The policy has been introduced under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act. The administration said visa restrictions would form part of a wider effort to disrupt international scam networks. Other measures could include sanctions, criminal prosecutions, asset seizures and extradition requests. Washington also plans to strengthen cooperation with international law enforcement agencies to identify and dismantle criminal networks operating across borders. Rubio said the United States would pursue individuals who target Americans through cybercrime and fraudulent schemes.     Karachi aerial firing leaves dozens injured on eve…

    Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations turned tragic in Karachi after celebratory aerial firing injured dozens of people across the city. According to rescue officials, at least 86 people were injured in separate incidents of aerial firing on the eve of August 14. The victims included 59 men, 17 children and 10 women, highlighting the serious danger posed by the unlawful practice. Rescue officials reported that 24 victims were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, while 35 were shifted to Jinnah Hospital. Another 26 people were transported to Civil Hospital. While Independence Day is traditionally marked with flags, decorations, patriotic songs and family gatherings, the use of firearms during celebrations has repeatedly turned festive occasions into dangerous situations. Authorities have consistently warned citizens against aerial firing. Despite these warnings and existing restrictions, celebratory gunfire continues to occur during major occasions such as Independence Day and New Year’s Eve. Police also launched a crackdown against people allegedly involved in aerial firing in different parts of Karachi. People who are completely unaware of the firing can be struck while standing outside, travelling through the city or even staying inside their homes. The latest incident also comes after a similarly tragic Independence Day last year. In 2025, three people, including a minor girl, were killed and more than 100 others were injured in celebratory gunfire across Karachi. Authorities subsequently arrested suspects and recovered illegal weapons. What some people consider a form of celebration can result in permanent injuries, loss of life and lasting trauma for innocent families.     Archaeologists have uncovered a stunning 4th-century Roman mosaic beneath farmland in England, offering new insight into life during the period when Britain was part of the Roman Empire. The remarkable mosaic was discovered at the remains of an ancient Roman villa in Devon. Made from thousands of colorful stones arranged into intricate floral patterns, the artwork is believed to date back to the fourth century AD. The Roman Empire controlled much of Britain from around AD 43 until around AD 410, leaving behind numerous settlements, villas, roads and other archaeological remains. Alongside the mosaic, archaeologists discovered a large and sophisticated Roman bathhouse near the site. The complex reportedly contained several small pools, walls decorated with colorful plaster and a range of other ancient artifacts. The excavation was carried out over a two-month period by archaeologists from the University of Exeter and Cotswold Archaeology. Volunteers also participated in the work, helping researchers investigate the agricultural land located between the Devon villages of Hill Barton and Sampford Peverell. The archaeological team already knew that the Roman villa and surrounding working areas were potentially important for understanding the spread of Roman culture across Devon. However, the latest findings have revealed that the site was considerably larger and more significant than previously understood. Project leader Dr Susan Greaney said the discoveries could help researchers better understand Roman cultural influence and its interaction with local communities in the region. The detailed mosaic is particularly significant because such decorative artwork can provide clues about the status and lifestyle of people who lived at Roman villas. Its elaborate design and the presence of a substantial bathhouse suggest that the site was an important settlement rather than a simple rural dwelling.     Dallas conference backs UN-led Kashmir settlement

    Grieving mother breaks silence on toddler’s tragic death

    An 18-month-old baby girl’s tragic death has sparked nationwide grief and outrage after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by a teenage relative in Karachi’s Qayyumabad area. Investigators said he allegedly took the toddler outside under the pretext of taking her for a walk before returning her home in critical condition. The child was rushed for medical treatment but later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities stated that the initial medical examination indicated signs of sexual assault, while the suspect was arrested from his residence shortly after the incident. The investigation remains ongoing. A day after the incident, the grieving mother spoke publicly for the first time, sharing the painful sequence of events that led to the loss of her daughter. Fighting back tears, she explained that she had returned home from work in the afternoon before taking her daughter to the market. After the child had eaten, she briefly went to a neighbour’s house for an urgent matter. She said the accused, identified as Manan, was the grandson of her paternal aunt and had been visiting their home for nearly one and a half years. Since he often spent time with the family and appeared caring toward her daughter, she trusted him. According to the mother, he offered to take the little girl for a walk, something he had done on previous occasions. When he brought the child back, the toddler was reportedly unconscious. The mother said her sister informed her that the child had been vomiting. Concerned, she took her to a nearby clinic, where doctors initially suspected that the vomiting might have been caused by spoiled milk. She returned home, gave her daughter oral rehydration solution (ORS), and put her to sleep. However, while changing the child’s diaper, the mother noticed bleeding. She recalled that her daughter had stopped responding, her heartbeat appeared to have slowed, and her lips had turned dark. Realising the seriousness of the situation, she desperately asked for help in taking the child to the hospital. The grieving mother said she had to take her daughter to the hospital herself because no one came forward to assist her. She also revealed that she does not live with her husband and claimed that very few relatives stood by her during the tragedy. According to her, even some close family members did not attend her daughter’s funeral. She further shared that the post-mortem examination revealed severe injuries, saying her daughter had suffered unimaginable cruelty despite being only 18 months old. Her emotional account has left many people devastated, with countless social media users expressing sympathy for the grieving mother and calling for the harshest possible punishment for those responsible. The incident has also sparked wider discussions online about child safety. While many users focused on demanding justice and stronger legal action against child abuse, others stressed the importance of never leaving young children unattended or in the care of anyone, regardless of how well they are known or trusted.
