US announces visa curbs on cybercrime suspects

The United States has announced a new visa restriction policy targeting foreign nationals accused of involvement in cybercrime, online fraud and other cyber-enabled criminal activities.

The new measures will apply to people who are directly involved in such crimes or who knowingly assist criminal networks. The policy specifically covers online scams, cyber fraud and sextortion.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the policy was introduced as part of the Trump administration’s broader campaign against cybercrime and fraud targeting American citizens.

The move follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump aimed at combating cybercrime, financial fraud and schemes that exploit US citizens.

According to the US State Department, online investment scams have become a major threat to Americans. The department said US citizens lost at least $10 billion to scams in 2024.

Officials also raised concerns about criminal organisations operating across borders. Some scam operations are allegedly linked to transnational criminal groups and are associated with money laundering, corruption and human trafficking.

The US government also highlighted the growing threat of sextortion. American children have reportedly been targeted by overseas criminals who use online platforms to manipulate and blackmail victims.

Under the new policy, visa restrictions can be imposed on foreign nationals found responsible for or complicit in cybercrime and cyber-enabled criminal activities. In certain cases, immediate family members of individuals involved in such activities may also face visa restrictions.

The policy has been introduced under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act.

The administration said visa restrictions would form part of a wider effort to disrupt international scam networks. Other measures could include sanctions, criminal prosecutions, asset seizures and extradition requests.

Washington also plans to strengthen cooperation with international law enforcement agencies to identify and dismantle criminal networks operating across borders.

Rubio said the United States would pursue individuals who target Americans through cybercrime and fraudulent schemes. The administration said the new restrictions were intended to increase the consequences for criminals and those who help them operate

Blake Lively reacts to tragic deaths of Hayden Pan…

Blake Lively has shared a heartfelt message following the tragic death of Hayden Panettiere, while also remembering her late friend and former co-star Michelle Trachtenberg. The actress used the emotional moment to encourage people to show more kindness and compassion toward one another. Lively shared a video on her Instagram Stories featuring scenes from the 2005 Disney movie Ice Princess. The film starred both Panettiere and Trachtenberg, who played rivals before their characters ultimately became friends. Lively appeared alongside both actresses in the movie, making the footage an especially meaningful reminder of their connection.  Alongside the video, Lively expressed gratitude for the joy the two women had brought to audiences. She also urged her followers to “be kind,” highlighting the importance of remembering that people may be dealing with private struggles that others cannot see.  Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. The actress was known for major roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise. Her family described her as a “force of nature” who brought immense love and joy to those around her.  Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and former co-stars. Connie Britton, Viola Davis, Selma Blair and several other stars have shared memories of Panettiere, remembering her talent, warmth and determination.  For Lively, the loss also carried echoes of another heartbreaking Hollywood tragedy. Michelle Trachtenberg, who worked with Lively on Gossip Girl, died in February 2025 at the age of 39. Lively previously paid tribute to Trachtenberg, describing her as a deeply kind and fiercely loyal person whose presence could immediately change the energy in a room.  Trachtenberg’s death was later determined to have resulted from complications of diabetes. Her passing deeply affected the Gossip Girl cast, with Lively among those who publicly remembered her.  By placing Panettiere and Trachtenberg together in her latest tribute, Lively appeared to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of appreciating people while they are still here. Her message comes at a difficult time for Panettiere’s loved ones and fans. The actress had recently opened up about her life and struggles in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, giving audiences a more personal understanding of the experiences behind her public image.  Lively’s tribute ultimately focused less on celebrity and more on humanity. Her call for kindness serves as a reminder that compassion can matter deeply, especially when someone’s private struggles are not visible to the outside world.

Sonia Hussyn calls for meaningful freedom in Indep…

Pakistani actress Sonia Hussyn has shared a thought-provoking message on Independence Day, urging people to look beyond the usual celebrations and think about what freedom truly means. The actress took to social media to express her concerns about the way some Pakistanis celebrate Independence Day. Rather than focusing only on flags, decorations and festivities, Hussyn questioned whether a nation can truly protect its rights if its people do not first learn to protect their own dignity, discipline and principles. In her message, the actress asked what a nation can do to protect its rights when its citizens do not know how to remain organized, principled or protect their self-respect. She also criticized the tendency to limit patriotic enthusiasm to free cake, loud celebrations and modified motorcycle silencers. Her comments appeared to be a call for greater responsibility among citizens. The message suggested that patriotism should not be limited to one day of celebration but should be reflected in people’s everyday behavior and choices. Hussyn’s remarks came as Pakistanis across the country prepared to celebrate Independence Day on August 14. Streets, homes and public spaces were decorated with national flags, while people took part in rallies, concerts and other festivities. Social media was also filled with patriotic messages and photographs celebrating the occasion. However, Hussyn encouraged her followers to consider a deeper meaning of independence. Her message focused on discipline, self-respect and responsibility as qualities that can help strengthen society. The actress’s comments quickly attracted attention online. A social media post featuring her message was shared alongside reactions from other Pakistani celebrities who also reflected on the country’s challenges while celebrating Independence Day. (Instagram) Hussyn’s message reflects a broader conversation that often emerges around August 14: whether national pride should be expressed through temporary celebrations or through actions that contribute to society throughout the year. For many people, Independence Day is an opportunity to remember the sacrifices connected to Pakistan’s creation. Hussyn’s words add another perspective, suggesting that maintaining freedom also requires citizens to take responsibility for their communities and their own conduct. Her criticism of noisy celebrations does not necessarily reject patriotism itself. Instead, it highlights the difference between celebrating independence and actively contributing to the country. Simple acts such as following rules, respecting others, maintaining cleanliness and standing up for one’s rights can also become meaningful expressions of patriotism. Ultimately, Sonia Hussyn’s message asks Pakistanis to think beyond the excitement of August 14. Her central point is that a strong nation needs citizens who are disciplined, principled and conscious of their dignity. As Independence Day celebrations continue, her words serve as a reminder that loving one’s country can mean more than displaying a flag. It can also mean helping create a society worthy of the freedom that people celebrate each year.

Pakistan receives $3.6 billion in remittances in J…

KARACHI: Pakistan received $3.6 billion in workers’ remittances from overseas Pakistanis during July 2026, marking a significant increase compared with the same period last year, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The central bank reported that remittance inflows increased by 13% year-on-year in July and also recorded a 4.5% rise compared with the previous month. The latest figures highlight the continued importance of overseas Pakistanis in supporting the country’s foreign exchange position and overall economic stability. Saudi Arabia remained the largest source of remittances during the month, sending $913.9 million to Pakistan. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) followed with $737.3 million, while overseas Pakistanis in the United Kingdom contributed $555.5 million. The United States also remained an important source, accounting for $317.2 million in remittance inflows. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the increase and expressed satisfaction over the $3.6 billion received in July. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, he said the 13% year-on-year increase in remittances was encouraging and reflected the continued contribution of overseas Pakistanis to the national economy. The prime minister also highlighted the 4.5% month-on-month growth, saying that the consistent financial support provided by overseas Pakistanis was playing an important role in strengthening Pakistan’s economy. He described overseas Pakistanis as a valuable and integral part of the country’s economic mainstream. The latest figures have also generated positive expectations regarding Pakistan’s remittance outlook for the ongoing financial year. Topline Research estimated that remittances could reach around $40.1 billion during FY27 if the current trend continues. Economist Dr Khaqan Najeeb said remittances were becoming increasingly important as a source of foreign exchange, particularly at a time when Pakistan’s export sector continued to face difficulties. According to him, the country’s weak domestic economic conditions, limited employment opportunities and significant differences between local and international wages were encouraging more Pakistanis to seek employment abroad. He noted that the movement of workers overseas was resulting in a corresponding flow of foreign exchange back into Pakistan. The economist said these inflows were helping the country manage its balance of payments and reduce pressure on its external accounts. However, he also warned that the growing dependence on remittances highlighted deeper structural weaknesses within the domestic economy. Dr Najeeb pointed out that Pakistan’s increasing reliance on overseas employment reflected the country’s inability to generate enough productive and well-paying jobs at home. While remittances provide valuable financial support and strengthen foreign exchange reserves, he argued that sustainable economic growth requires stronger domestic employment opportunities and a more competitive export sector. The July figures therefore present both an encouraging development and a broader economic challenge. Rising remittances are providing Pakistan with much-needed foreign exchange, but policymakers also face the task of improving domestic economic conditions so that overseas employment becomes a choice rather than a necessity for a growing number of Pakistanis.
