Khyber Pakhtunkhwa likely to get new police chief

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hamid is likely to be replaced, according to official sources.

The provincial government has reportedly initiated the process of appointing a new police chief. Three names have been forwarded to the federal government for consideration.

The federal government will review the proposed names before making a final decision.

Sources said the appointment of the new IG is expected within the next few days.

The change, if approved, would bring a new leadership at the top of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police. The provincial police chief is responsible for overseeing law enforcement operations across the province.

The federal government has the authority to make the final appointment after considering the names forwarded by the provincial government.

Officials have not yet publicly announced the names of the three candidates. No formal notification regarding the replacement of Zulfiqar Hamid has been issued so far.

The development comes amid continued security and law-and-order challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The new police chief, once appointed, will be responsible for strengthening policing, improving security measures and coordinating operations across the province.

Preparations have also been completed for the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, with polling scheduled in four constituencies across Bagh and Haveli districts of the Poonch Division. The transportation of election materials to polling stations is currently underway. Elections in five constituencies of Poonch and two constituencies of Sudhanoti have been postponed. The upcoming electoral contest also features three former prime ministers among the candidates. Former AJK prime ministers Sardar Attique Khan and Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, who lead the Muslim Conference and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party respectively, are contesting the elections. AJK Prime Minister Faisal Rathore is also taking part in the electoral contest. Authorities have stepped up security and logistical preparations ahead of polling to ensure a peaceful voting process across the constituency.

Their prison sentences reportedly range from 42 months to nearly 20 years, depending on their level of involvement and the charges they faced. Escoe now faces multiple federal charges in Florida, including wire fraud and money laundering. If convicted, she could face significant penalties under United States federal law. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the government’s commitment to prosecuting individuals accused of abusing taxpayer-funded assistance programs.
