Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations turned tragic in Karachi after celebratory aerial firing injured dozens of people across the city.

According to rescue officials, at least 86 people were injured in separate incidents of aerial firing on the eve of August 14. The victims included 59 men, 17 children and 10 women, highlighting the serious danger posed by the unlawful practice. (Dawn⁠)

The injured were transported to several major hospitals in Karachi for immediate medical treatment. Rescue officials reported that 24 victims were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, while 35 were shifted to Jinnah Hospital. Another 26 people were transported to Civil Hospital. The incidents were reported from several areas of Karachi, including Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Orangi Town, Jamshed Quarters and Defence.

The injuries occurred as residents gathered to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day. While Independence Day is traditionally marked with flags, decorations, patriotic songs and family gatherings, the use of firearms during celebrations has repeatedly turned festive occasions into dangerous situations.

Authorities have consistently warned citizens against aerial firing. Despite these warnings and existing restrictions, celebratory gunfire continues to occur during major occasions such as Independence Day and New Year’s Eve. Police also launched a crackdown against people allegedly involved in aerial firing in different parts of Karachi. (Dawn⁠)

The danger of aerial firing is particularly serious because bullets fired into the air can travel significant distances before falling. People who are completely unaware of the firing can be struck while standing outside, travelling through the city or even staying inside their homes.

The latest incident also comes after a similarly tragic Independence Day last year. In 2025, three people, including a minor girl, were killed and more than 100 others were injured in celebratory gunfire across Karachi. Authorities subsequently arrested suspects and recovered illegal weapons. (Dawn⁠)

The repeated incidents have renewed concerns about public safety and the enforcement of restrictions against celebratory firing. What some people consider a form of celebration can result in permanent injuries, loss of life and lasting trauma for innocent families.

Independence Day is meant to celebrate Pakistan’s freedom and national identity. However, the injuries reported in Karachi serve as a painful reminder that celebrations should never put other people’s lives at risk.

As authorities continue efforts to control aerial firing, citizens are also being urged to celebrate responsibly. Fireworks, flags, music and family gatherings can create a festive atmosphere without putting innocent people in danger.

Moscow Awaits New Proposals Russia and the United States have held discussions aimed at finding a path towards ending the Ukraine conflict, but negotiations have made little visible progress. The Kremlin said on Thursday that it had not received information about a possible new visit to Moscow by US presidential envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. The two have previously played prominent roles in contacts with Russian officials. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that Washington remained committed to helping end the war after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Manila. However, Rubio also warned against expecting a rapid agreement, saying Washington was attempting to find a middle ground between the positions of the two sides. Ryabkov said Russia would be ready to examine any proposals put forward by Washington, provided they were consistent with Moscow’s stated objectives. “The Russian Federation is ready to listen to any reasonable proposals and ideas that are in line with the goals set by the Russian president and meet the ‘realities on the ground’,” he said. Territorial Disputes Remain Central The comments underline the continuing importance of territory in the negotiations. After almost four and a half years of war, Russia controls around one-fifth of Ukraine’s internationally recognised territory. Moscow has repeatedly said it is willing to negotiate, but insists that any settlement must acknowledge what it calls the new realities created by the conflict. Ukraine and its Western allies have opposed recognising Russian territorial gains, making the issue one of the most difficult elements of any potential peace agreement. The challenge for Washington is therefore not simply bringing Moscow and Kyiv back to negotiations, but finding terms that could satisfy competing demands over territory, security guarantees and the future political order in the region. Nuclear Dialogue Also on the Table Ryabkov also signalled that Moscow wants to keep diplomatic channels open with Washington on nuclear weapons. The issue has gained urgency since the New START treaty expired in February, leaving Russia and the United States without binding limits on their strategic nuclear arsenals for the first time in more than five decades. Moscow has said it would continue observing the treaty’s limits on missiles and warheads as long as Washington does the same. “We remain open in the future to find political and diplomatic ways to stabilise this area,” Ryabkov said. The nuclear issue adds another layer to an already complicated US-Russia relationship. Even as the two countries remain deeply divided over Ukraine, Moscow appears keen to prevent the collapse of communication on strategic weapons. For now, Russia’s message is that the door to diplomacy remains open — but only proposals that reflect Moscow’s stated conditions and its view of the battlefield are likely to receive serious consideration. With the war continuing and previous negotiations stalled, the next major test will be whether Washington can persuade Kyiv, Moscow and European governments to move beyond competing positions and return to substantive peace discussions.

He said the nation demonstrated unity when India attempted to threaten Pakistan. Murad Ali Shah called on young people and citizens from all walks of life to remain united and work together for the country’s development.     From Meer Baloch Through the columns of your respected newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities to the continuous increase in fuel prices in Pakistan. The rising cost of petrol and diesel has made life difficult for ordinary people. Higher fuel prices increase transportation costs, which also raise the prices of food, medicines, and other daily necessities. Poor and middle-class families are suffering the most because their incomes remain the same while expenses continue to rise. The government should take effective measures to control fuel prices and provide relief to the public. It should also promote affordable public transport and reduce unnecessary taxes on fuel. I hope my letter will create awareness and encourage the authorities to take prompt action.
